I found a sharp piece of a tooth pick in my potatoes, Im glad I wasnt chewing hard so I wasnt hurt. He offered me a free dessert which I appreciate, but I declined cause I was already full and I dont like to force food. Something as dangerous as a sharp tooth pick made me question the rest of the meal. Basic food for a 30 dollar steak, could go to IHOP for an 18 dollar steak with more flavor. I like to try new things. I tried this place and will never comeback.
Very unwelcoming and rude. No one attended to us for a very long amount of period. However people who were seated after us were attended to quickly and each time we tried to get their attention itβs as if they were deliberately ignoring us. FINALLY after ordering and receiving our order it was wrong. We could not get a refund after a long wait so they remade it and even then took very long. DO NOT RECOMMEND.
Gary and Jay both do a great job of getting your food to you fast and with respect. They deal with a lot of drunks, so be chill.Get a Double Johnny and onion rings if youre drunk at 3AM. Delectable.Stay away from the chicken fingers. Everything else on the menu, from pancakes to steak, are good.
We went to this place two times this weekend whole in the city for an event.First, let me say I appreciated proof of vaccination for entry! The food was good as well, good old fashioned diner food! The only thing is this is not a place to go if you are in a hurry, the service is good, but slow.
Busy, working hard front dinning server as well as back kitchen cooks.
This place was a huge disappointmentβ¦!!!!Our sever, an older man with grey hair, seemed he was under the influence, brought us out cold coffee, and literally melted ice cream in a puddle, also a apple pie which was so disgustingly soggy and old, it smelled like fermented alcohol, was overcharged and it seemed he pocketed the money and didnβt even offer a refund when I told him about the issue, we didnβt even eat anything which was brought to usβ¦.NEVER AGAIN IN MY LIFEβ¦.!! I wish I could give NEGATIVE STARSβ¦!!!
I usually donβt take the time to make reviews but when I see injustice, I donβt hesitate to do it. What happened was that when we ordered our food the guy charged us in advance and we felt that he was charging more for what we ordered. On the other hand, his service was un polite and took a long time just to bring extra hot water.
Spectacular burgers and open late. Unique atmosphere, like an old trolley car. Owner is very kind. Mom n pop type stop. Small business worthy of support.
One of the coolest little greasy spoons Ive been to - and staffed by great people!
A diner built inside an old carriage with a fairly authentic feel to it and good but not great food. The menu and meals are simple but the service is very fast. There dont appear to be toilets and the steps at the front and narrow floorspace make the place unsuitable for disabled people. The prices are reasonable and the drinks are bottomless, though that isnt mentioned in the menuUnusually, the proprietor asks for payment, including the tip, up front. Ive knocked a star off for this behavior as it excludes the tip motivation for good service.Overall this is a good place to take the family for a reasonably piced meal.
$60 for subpar bar food? Um.. I dont think so! Terrible waste of money! I ordered a turkey club. It was disgusting. None of the veggies were ripe. Cool atmosphere, gross food. Dont eat the old condiments on table. Mayonnaise is expired..!
It was hard to find a sit down meal during pandemic but luckily a friend brought me to Grubstake. Large menu, clean and interesting architecture(the location is a building/streetcar hybrid). Try the cheesesteak - its not traditional but very good.
Its awesome how late there open food is more than decent quality for a diner and the people are always very nice
Kitchy little place. Great pics on the walls and a big bar. We were a little apprehensive but we chalked it up to the waitress. (She was a little out of it.) BUT- the Patty Melt was Awesome! Best Ive ever had. The beef tasted very good and it was cooked properly. The Rye bread was on point and the cheese was warm and gooey. Very nice! Shakes looked very good but at $10 a pop, we decided to pass.
Food wasnt horrible but overpriced and the service is really bad its only one guy taking orders and bussing tables and hes definitely not happy about it. Paid by card and he told me one price and didnt provide a receipt. Asked for one on my way out to discover he gave himself a 25% tip on my card and insisted he ALWAYS tells everyone of the additional charge when my whole table can attest he did not say anything about an automatic gratuity.
This place was amazing, we had 7 people there everyone had something different, and everyone in my group loved it. Including the 4 that were 10-17 who typically hate everything. Wonderful Staff, Service, and Grub! Thanks!
Burgers were delicious and fresh; get the Grubstake burger! Friendly service and overall wonderful experience.
Good food, good quick service. We actually liked the turkey sandwich over the super duper burger. The turkey sandwich tasted fresh, especially the seasoned turkey. The fries were also top notch. Decided not to buy a milkshake though, because they were $12. And we had already spent $34 on our main dishes.
Love that its open until 3AM and the food is really good!
2016 I worked there as a dishwasher, cookβs & waiterβs helper. I had a blast! Jimmy Consos, absolute gentleman. The food is great!!
Owner was very rude to me. I came in for dinner and did not bring my phone. The owner would not tell me what they serve or being me a menu and insisted I scan the QR code for the menu. When I told him my phones not with me, he rudely said I dont know what to tell you.Im eating somewhere more welcoming like Mels Diner.
Awesome little place. N.Y strip and soft scrambled eggs at 230am. Cant beat it.
Came to pick up an order, waited 30 minutes after I was told itβd be ready and the old guy working was blatantly rude to me when I simply asked if it was ready when I arrived. Needs some better staff.
The place has changed much since my last visit, but it is good to know it is open for business. Ill be by more often when I get some new teeth put in.
I just had THE MOST AMAZING chicken wings of my life! The Portuguese Buffalo Wings are absolutely incredible. I only walked into The Grubstake because it was cold outside and I didnt want to walk further to get fast food. Ill be back though for those wings! I dont know how they got the meat to fall off the bone like that, but it sure is satisfying. The spice is just right, too. Those big, meaty wings made for an intense session of dip, chew, savor, and repeat. Thanks for the experience!
Its a good late night spot. The food is just ok. Make sure to tip the staff well. They are there for long shifts waiting on a lot of drunk or rude people.
Excellent late night spot. Great food and service.
Even giving one star is generous. Donβt waste your time here. Paid $60 for the nastiest food ever, even smelling it made me want to throw up, had to dump it all. Really wanted to like this place but unfortunately it is not what it seems, food looks good online but it is not what they show.
Worth the wait. Best burger in SF, hands down.
Not at all what the pictures looked like. We got our food to go. Staff was pleasant when food was picked up. Cost of food not worth quality of food. Severly disappointed with the quality.
Awesome for after hours pancakes and fries and shakes. Lots of seating and easy fast service.
Food was mediocre, the price was kinda high and service wasnt good
Great wings, great service and the place is really nice. 100% recommended
I spent fifteen bucks for Two small milkshakes And a tiny soda Here . I dont think you got much For your money And its more than a tad overpriced! It just is NOT providing the kinda service/food to justify the money spent and you might just walk away wishing youd held out for somewhere better!
Always a cool experience..... You never know in San Fran!
Absolute garbage. French toast was literally raw wonder bread with a dash of cinnamon.
Fair experience but the prices are wildly high for what you receive. Service left a bit to be desired but he was the only one on the floor and it was a trifle busy. He was quite harried and seemed overwhelmed; we even overheard other tables saying the same.
Its a decent spot, not too far from. Both members of the team are friendly and also recommend other meals that provide unique features of the day. Cant wait until I get back here!
Really an awesome spot I enjoy the atmosphere and the breakfast.
Food is delicious, Ive tried different plates and they are amazing, burgers cooked for perfection, good customer service.
Came with a group to get some food. Order management was horrible. My group made their order and then it took an HR to make my order because I was interrupted by pickup orders. They tried persuading me I didnt order anything 2mins after making my order and paying for it. Always get a receipt here and look at the amount before you pay because they sneakily preselect the tip for you. Prices are inflated for what you get but hey, props for being one of the only few restaurants that are open late.
A classic venue serving real, existent food (burgers/diner classics) cooked on demand very late at night. What more is there to know?
A nice ending to a memorable night. Very quaint and good food. Friendly service with a smile.
Great service and grub for late night eats after ballgame.
Great food and open late night a major plus.
Soooo FIREEEEE
You have to try their plates! I love this restaurant, and I think it was the best restaurant in this town. The staff was great, and the food was great. It was worth a visit!
It was 5 minutes before Closing, but the Chef went out of his way to make me an AWESOME Bacon Cheeseburger and Garlic Fries. Definitely one of my favorite restaurants
Food was delicious. Loved the french toast
Not bad food. Especially after a night of drinking!
Decent food nothing special
Always great!
Grateful to the server for handling an entire restaurant by himself.
French dip was 5 star.
Late night breakfast was delicious...
It was a good place. The best part was that it was open at 1 at night.
This place pleased me as I got so much comfort after eating lunch with two of my friends. We ate nugget burger and classic french toast. Those were healthy and tasty as well. The customer service is mind-blowing. After lunch, we gossiped in a nice environment.
Limited staff but food hits the spots.
First time in SF and we came across this place read reviews, because we all about that review life! We ordered a midnight snack of mozzarella sticks and hand-cut fries. Mozzarella sticks $11, fries $6. Totally not worth it.
Great food ... Love it lot for your $
It was excellent ππππ our server Charlotte provided excellent service and she was very polite and kind! We will definitely be going back! I had the hash burger and it was delicious ππ I was impressed! I do suggest trying this place out!
Open til 4 am, huge and pleasantly welcoming security guard. Diner food portions plentiful and excellent, prices moderate. Great for after clubbing.
Four mozzarella sticks for $11?! I know they are hand made.. but 4?? They are tiny yo! And the fries were super oily & mushy.. sorry bro but this not cool.
Comfort food in a friendly atmosphere and a unique space. The place has an old school charm. A friend brought me here after a show and we had burgers and fries. The food was really good. The wait staff are super friendly. Its also really convenient that theyre open so late.
Grubstske was delicious! Sorry no pictures. Too hungry. Charles got a juicy hamburger with hand cut fries. Stephanie got a grilled chicken sandwich with avocado on tasty sourdough bread.
Took my family on a Sunday evening and we were all hungry when we got there and full when we left. Best food and atmosphere in San Francisco we have had in 3 days. Great place to eat. Old school charm!! Price was s little high. But we are used to low prices back home in Idaho.
