Interesting exhibits describing the local maritime history. Some exhibits are interactive. Local topics include the coal docks, Lyman Boat Works, ice harvesting, and the island ferry business. There are two extra buildings in back featuring historic outboard motors and locally produced watercraft. Prepare to spend an hour or more going through all the exhibits. Detailed with plenty of period hardware and other museum pieces to see. Bring a camera!
Visited with my son. What a great little place. Lots of really interesting history of Lake Erie and boating/shipping. Will be back for another visit some day.
A wonderful learning experience about the history of Sanduskys bay.Several interesting displays and interactions to learn from. Fun to climb inside the boat displays and play in. Great for kids or people who are kids at heart. There is a video explaining a summary of whats displayed. Id recommend watching after exploring stuff on your own.Cute little gift shop too!
My wife and I loved it. We especially loved learning how to tie knots and the other interactive displays.
Admission prices are a bargain, for what you get to see. Interactive displays and interactive workstations for kids as well. We were there for the presentation & demonstration of the Sandusky Coal Docks scale model. Much info on Sandusky role in maritime history, but plenty info on Great Lakes boating, shipping, warfare, ship building, ice harvesting and fishing. Staff are very helpful, friendly and knowledgeable. 3 buildings of things to look at and learn about. Very family oriented place to go, even on a limited budget.
Small but very nice. Lots of history about the great lake ship traffic.
Excellent history and exhibits. A hidden treasure tucked away about 2 blocks from the waters of Lake Erie.
Nice chunk of history of the area. Has activities for kids, and knowledgeable staff.
Fun museum with a lot of neat exhibits. Great way to cool off and spend an afternoon on a hot summers day. Very reasonable price.
Nice little museum of nautical history
My wife and I loved it.
Very awesome tour guide, very informative
Very educational. Extremely well laid out. It took us about an hour and a half to see everything. My kids, 5 and 7, loved the scavenger hunt. My 13 year old even got in on it. Covered everything there possibly could be about Lake Erie and Sandusky Bay. We will be making another trip soon! In the back are a collection of antique outboards, Lymans (including one you can get on) and a yard game size Battle of Lake Erie version of Battleship. It was incredible.
A lot of information on the Great Lakes, focusing on Sandusky.
Great little museum.
$6 adult....Lake Erie history
Very nice maritime museum near the waterfront.
I arrived on a Monday but closed
Great artifact collection of Lake Erie maritime history!
Great museum. Learn much that I never knew about Sandusky and Erie.
Very nice place to visit. Lots of displays and history of the Sandusky areas maritime past. The staff was super friendly and helpful!
Covid restrictions excessive. Forcing guided tours do not fight the virus. Will not be back
One of the biggest surprises of the maritime museums of the Great Lakes. While not the biggest it may be one of the best
On Sunday, September 8th my family drove 40 minutes to Sandusky to attend an antique boat/car show at the Paper District Marina that was sponsored by the Maritime Museum. There was NO BOAT/CAR SHOW.... Professional printed signage was posted by the restroom area at the Dockside Cafe/Marina on a locked board.... I emailed the museum on Sunday, 9-8-19, my disappointment... I realize they are on winter hours and not open until Tuesdays, but here it is Thursday, 9-12-19, afternoon and I have not yet received a reply to why was this posted if there was no show?? If it was cancelled, then why was it not marked, so people do not make the drive?? If it was a previous year, then why was signage not removed??
Great museum! Our family loved it. They have a fun scavenger hunt and boat that children can build. Very interesting.
The friendliest staff I ever met! They were SO kind and patient with my son Alex (6 and very curious!). Learned alot and had fun!
First rate Lake Erie/Sandusky Bay historical venue. Great physical exhibits as well as a great gift shop with a nice variety of local printed history books, and knowledgeable staff. I would highly recommend visiting.
A wonderful place to learn about the history of Lake Erie around the Sandusky area. Displays are well laid out and interesting. Another building has displays of wooden boats.
Very cool place to visit, staff is friendly and very informative. Kids enjoyed learning about boats and visiting the room with the boats on display.
I worked in the area as a deck hand for a decade... I had never gone. I never expected much out of it. Recently one of the boatlines I worked for held a reunion here.... I was really impressed. Its small, but there was a lot more to see and read about than I was expecting. Also had great little interactive area for kids.
FUN 🎉 Nice People that Understand History. Reasonable Prices
What an amazing attraction for Sandusky!!! Not only is the museum spectacular but the employees are tremendous!!! They care about history and everyones experience. The staff go above and beyond for their community to include everyone in their history. If you are near Sandusky, please go learn some history and support some amazing people.
Better than what we expected. Will go back again and, willrecommend to our friends.
We took the girls there today. They had a blast building the wood ship, watching short informative, historic videos, and the ship exhibit of an older emergency boat.
Worth every minute, the children learned so much and they offered a scavenger hunt for the kids and they win a small prize. Highly recommended. Even for little kids.
First time there. Really nice. Worth your time to check it out. We had a private party there and it was great!!
If you are in the area and like historical lake Erie information, then you should stop in. A must for any good boaters
Did not know the museum existed. It was very interesting. Work stopping in if you have an extra hour or two if in Sandusky.

Bought a T shirt for my sister and The Maritime Museum was kind enough to let us sell tickets for our Nautical Shed for Habitat for Humanity!
Great place to learn something of the history of Sandusky.
Young and old can have fun and learn here.
Small museum. Cheap. It was 14 dollars for the whole family. Would return.
