Sad to hear Smith Brothers Butcher Shop is closing their doors December 29th. They took a special risk to bring their family institution of over 90 years and invested heavily downtown Savannah to build a really beautiful place and didnt play it safe which is a gamblers nature and I salute them. Even the earthier groceries around here wont come North of Victory Drive. Alas, its often the fate and visionaries for people ahead of their time and yes, timing is everything. Id say, to soon and too much too early. You also hear the usual grumblings from the peanut galley, too expensive, over priced. While thats true, we still see Whole Foods, Whole Paycheck afloat do we not? And hey, dont think Smith Brothers had a known plan to automate and replace human jobs with machines as does Whole Foods owner, Amazons Jeff Bezos. Id call that a plus. And granted Kroger around the corner is, well, like Whole Paycheck, a giant corporation with all of the marketing machinery. That will one day too replace its humans. Marketing lackluster may have also been a shortcoming for Smith Brothers. Im not sure I saw enough of it or that it had its own identity in that way. And not kicking them when theyre down here, but Im not sure if anyone in their sphere said, Ummm. theres no foot traffic. Historically Smith Brothers had the virtue of being the closest grocery store to the citys most elite walled Savannah community, The Landings. And not assuming to know-know, but will fairly theorize that might give one a false sense of reality of elsewhere. I think someone in their world said, Well you know. theyre building million dollar houses in that block...and theres that new megaplex condo development going in on E. President St or whatever they fell under the spell of. They were good bets in a way and I mean, again kudos to them for believing in their towns growth. But many have died on the ramparts of Savannahs image vs some of its realities. As a Foodie Agent, Im full of good advice and some closings make me happy because they just suck or had giant egos and I never shed a tear over some trendy joint to be honest. Its really the old school ones with heart that make me weep and this is certainly the case. So its probably a little late to dole out advice but mine would be this. The go-to young place was Parkers Market on Drayton St. Theyre open 24 Hours. Well when they remodeled and sold out to the look of their other gas stations, they lost face and honestly are no longer that cool or in the way it was for at least 20 years. They lost their edge. They still have location by bars and upscale hotels so theyll make it off of the quickie customers. Not saying Smith Brothers wants or wanted to be that. But even Parkers at one time had a high end deli and expansive gourmet retail. And they were the ultimate locals grocery who had all the older residents and the young crowd. Smith Brothers needed to get more ambitious and work the pulse of the market not just go after a singular vision for some high end regulars. Again, Im not in their business office so cant speak to everything but I dont think they hustled all of the angles. Or enough. Im just not sure they wanted it bad enough or had the right people on their team. I say these things in part, because yes, I want to sweep in and wave a wand and rescue Smith Brothers and this is my last ditch gasp. You know, if just to make it more difficult for an Amazon grocery to show up with robot bag boys that are promoted as greener because they run on Tesla batteries. But to also guarantee its success. But even my advice has arrived too late it appears. Thanks for keeping it human Smith Brothers. And sorry for your efforts lost. Look forward to the next chapter.

An amazing selection to choose from and the staff is always willing to help. Every time I have gone in there, I have received nothing short of the best service. The butchers are more than willing to help out with making sure you get the best cut for what you are looking for. The deli counter also has a wonderul selection of meats and cheeses to choose from and the lunch specials are always easy on the wallet.

Customer service, space, and quality of sandwiches are top notch. They have a great selection of meats and cheeses and specialty cuts. If ordering for lunch, plan ahead since there will be a wait typically at least 25 minutes regardless of the number of customers. Like other reviewers mentioned sandwiches are expensive but large and delicious. You should definitely stop in and check it out especially on free wine tasting Saturdays.

My husband and I ordered a cheese plate for our visit to Savannah. It was waiting for us when we arrived! We were so pleased with everything on it. The meats and cheeses were excellent and the portions were very generous. The fruit was very fresh and the olives and other pickled items were delicious. I highly recommend them!

Went to Smith Brothers today on the first stop of the Famous & Secret East Side Food tour. The owner came out and greeted us and served 3 different types of sausage made in house, as well as some delicious beet dip. They also sell locally sourced produce, some prepped foods, and have a large wine selection. Definitely worth checking out if you live or work nearby.

My boyfriend and I stopped by here on our Savannah Food Tour. The owner was incredibly kind and came to our table when the platter was served to explain all the pieces and meats. The serving butcher always made sure we were catered to. The Blueberry sausage literally tastes like an entire breakfast exploding on your tastebuds. The beet dip is phenomenal! Our tour group did let an ounce of that go to waste.

Great sandwiches -- the falafel surprisingly enough is literally the best Ive ever had, they make their own sourdough wraps which are incredible. We often get meats from the butcher as well, I dont eat much beef so cant comment there but everything weve bought has been of excellent quality and surprisingly well priced.

The prepared foods were very limited. The raw meat selection looked awesome, but I would have thought they would have sold prepared meat selections also. Often, I dont have the time to cook for myself. The prepared foods they did have werent labeled or priced, and some vegetables also lacked prices.

Oh my gosh, this place is great. Shop here! Savannah needs more food shops like this. The meat is top quality for great prices - some local, no organic (that Ive seen), all high quality. Wine, veggies, cheese! New deli offers expensive, but large, sandwiches.

This place is a bad joke. We came to buy short ribs, they had a few that were mostly bone in one area. In another area they were dried out and literally starting to turn black. They also had a whole piece of NY strip which was turning black. I am not talking about aging here, I am talking about old meat. We thought we were safe by buying a rack of baby back ribs which were vacuum sealed, wrong! They were rank, horrible. This place has high prices and their beef has little or no marbeling. All the business I saw was in the sandwich area. What a nerve this place has to sell black meat!

Literally waited 20 minutes for a turkey sandwich. And there was no one else there...i had to ask twice about my sandwich- and they still got my order wrong. I wasnt willing to wait another 20 mins for them to correct it so i just ate it. And no one apologized or recognized the fact it took so long. Not impressed despite high reviews. Maybe just a fluke but will definitley not return and wouldnt recommend.Update- thank you for your response Robert. My husband and I came in to the Butcher Shop on 5/17. I hope this helps.

Authentic, old school butcher shop with all the family ownership traits you want plus all the style/accoutrements sides youd expect from a tastemakers upgrade. Why shop Whole Foods - and pay their prices - when Smith Brothers exists? (Question I asked & answered of myself when I stopped buying meat at WF and started getting it here.)
