Huge ski and bike shop in Schenectady. Since this is the only one left (their shop in Malta closed), this location is now busier than usual. The staff is friendly and helpful, though, and theres good deals on used ski equipment.Theres plenty of parking and a restroom available for customer use. We rented out kids skis here for the season and the service and help has been great. We would rent from here again.
I walked in just to look, no intention to purchase. I didnt even bring my wallet in. I think the young man who ended up helping me was Rob, I wish I knew for sure. I ended up buying a new bike, probably the least expensive ($300) new one in the store but he treated me like I was spending $5,000. I was sent here by a friend and I see why, the inventory might be good but the customer service is why people shop here.
What an amazing bike shop. The store manager Cody knows how to take care of his customers keeping them happy and coming back. In a world where customer service is a lost art this is a breath of fresh air. Matthew is a master bike fitter and all around great guy who knows his stuff and always willing to help out and take good care of his customers. He fit me to all my bikes and now I ride pain free and enjoy my time on the bike. When it came time to get a new bike Plaine and Son knocked it out of the park again. Cody helped me make a deal quickly and efficiently and by the end of the week I had my new bike at a great price and Matthew fit me to it and all around was a great experience and I walked out of the shop feeling great. They also have a cool concept RITA where you get to go see your new bike being put together where you can have a coffee ask questions and become one with your new bike. This shop can meet all your needs and you will have a great experience in the process. We will be going to Plaine and Son bike shop for all out future needs.
I needed some work on my bike and in the past I had some slow and never-got-a-call service there. Today though was great. The guys looked at the bike, offered me options and fixed it on the spot at a very reasonable price. Fantastic to not have to leave the bike, great job Plaines!
The visit was a positive one for sure. The staff was very helpful and walked me through the process of shipping out my bike. The bike was delivered in the actual time they informed me it would arrive. The bike was delivered without any damage and the new owner was very satisfied with the bike.
I went to Plaine and Son to rent a bike for the day. I got there right when the store opened and was greeted at the door by the friendly and helpful associate, Robbie. He offered free coffee and explained that all used bikes were available for 24 hour rentals for $40, which sounded reasonable. He was very helpful in assisting me while also tending to other customers. He also rented me a lock for free since I did not have one. Looking around, prices of new and used bikes for sale looked very reasonable as well. Id recommend Plaine and Son for all your bike needs!
Just passing through town on a bike tour and stopped in to get a new mini pump and top up my tires. The young fellow there was polite and very helpful. If I lived in the area Im sure THIS would be my shop.
Mechanic came out from his shop area behind the counter to help me out. I knew what I wanted but he encouraged me to ride around the store for feel. He also saw a scuff on the frame I would have never noticed and offered to order a mint bike or give me a discount. On my second ride the rear derailleur hanger broke off, and they fixed it for free even though they didnt have to. Great Specialized dealer down there in Schenectady who I will buy from again in the future.
Love this bike shop, very knowledgeable staff, super friendly. They let me ride their new fat bikes around the shop while my wheels were getting trued. Their prices are very competitive too, online is always cheaper of course, but if something is needed in a pinch, this shop wont break the bank.
Great place. Large inventory, knowledgeable staff that is helpful and courteous. They even have a nice old fella at the door offering you coffee and spring water .
We went looking for a new bike for our daughter and we all walked out with bikes. The service and attention to detail to getting us all fitted for our bikes was outstanding. They will service the bikes for a year, each month for no cost. A service that will pay for its self over the course of a year.We have been back to purchase other needed gear and again, the service was top notch. I highly recommend Plaine And Son for your biking needs.- Mike
This store is extremely nice and the community is very kind. They answer any question you have and don’t get impatient
Great selection and excellent service. If you live in the area and want to make a smart, informed decision on your new bike, there really is no other place to shop.
Family owned bike shops are the best. Biggest bike selection in the capitol region by far. They have been around forever. Their staff is very knowledgable and friendly, with a ton of experience. Overall, these guys really seem passionate and often offer price matching on their products with excellent selection. They really took their time with me so I could find the right bike. I had two fits here one when i first purchased my bike and the second after I have been riding for two years and I couldnt have asked for better help. Highly recommended.
I want to thank Robbie who went out of his way, to help my wife and daughter find ski boots. He got them to try on many boots to make sure they got just the right fit and the effort was worth it. I might add, Robbie did this 45 minutes before closing time. No rushing. Just friendly insistence that we get it right. Huge thanks for the effort!
Went in for XC ski poles, left with snowpants, gloves, ski helmet and base layer clothes. The young man was very helpful and very polite. Very personable. Great prices!!
Awsome bikes, top notch service. Very knowledgeable and helpful staff. Rarely write reviews but these guys really deserve a shout out!!
I highly recommend Plaine and Son. Their staff was very helpful, always courteous and attentive, and knowledgeable in helping me pick the bike that was right for me. They gave me a fair price for my old bike and an incredible deal on the new one.
Very clean shop, open. Some of the employees are very grungy looking, rude, and condescending. We went to rent some gear, and the employee (one of the nicer ones) asked no questions about ski style, preferences, etc. Just grabbed what fit and gave it to me. Had to ask to get better gear. We called prior and asked if they were renting out ski gear yet, and they said yes, but it was only when we were checking out we learned that they didnt even have the machines to tune up the skis yet, and they would call us to drive all the way back and pick them up. Unbelievable. We also picked up a bike tube and tire, and the same guy gave us the wrong sized tire, which we figured out when we got home. For a bike shop? Seriously? Came for a tune up on skis last year, and the guy who looked quite scary and was extremely rude told us that they put away the machines but agreed to get them out and tune them up. He told us that the skis were actually past due, but we were told when we rented them a different, later due date. Thankfully we were able to keep them to the original due date.UPDATE: Came by to get the skis, gave me a different pair than I had picked out, this pair is bigger. Unbelievable. Didnt realize it until I got home. I dont understand how a shop can mess up this many times.
Have had quite a few bike repairs done and they are always done well and completed when promised. Staff is helpful and knowledgeable.
After not riding for over 30 years, helped me select the perfect bike and necessary riding equipment. Knowledgeable, patient and friendly. Love my Specialized hybrid. Thank you Plaine Bros!
Wonderful customer service its been such pleasure doing business with everyone that works there.
People pay a premium at the local bike shop (instead of online) for the knowledge and service provided. The former cant be trusted here, and the latter will be overpriced here. You will get ripped off at Plaine and Son.
Im highly impressed with how Sonny kindly went above and beyond to help me with my bike ride today. He explained to me explicitly in a way that was easy to understand and he was also very patient with me.If not because of Sonny l would be paying enormous money towards bike learning lessons. Thanks Sonny I will always be grateful for your support!
I recently got my first pair of spin cycling shoes w/ SPD clips at Plaines & I couldnt have been happier w/ the experience! Friendly, knowledgeable, helpful associates...& a GREAT (50% off!) sale on when I was in before Christmas -- scoring me what would have been $100+ shoes for only $60ish w/ tax! I will definitely go back & will happily refer others! :)
Bought a Specialized Sirrus Sport Disc recently. There was a bit of confusion over the order, but they addressed all concerns quickly and with courtesy. I would recommend the shop, Specialized bikes, and the employees highly. - George PS I didnt think the disc brakes would be a big deal but I love them.
Background:Just traded a little-used, brand-name mountain bike for a new road bike. Radical tech changes since I last owned/rode a bicycle caused me to spend time in the store, asking lots of basic questions.I have no personal interest in the business nor personal gripes. Observations follow.Your experience/perception may differ.Pros:-Knowledgeable and helpful staff.-Sales force not pushy at all; may even suggest cheaper alternatives – rare phenomenon!-Spacious sales-room floor permits trial-bike-ride within the confines of its walls. Shopping in winter? No problem. Speaking of which, bikes specifically designed for riding in sand and snow adorned the showroom.-Clean and inviting showroom One is greeted with a smile.Cons:-During busy hours, apt to be served by staff who eagerly volunteer addressing questions but are seriously short on product knowledge.-Quotes are not generally offered in writing unless specifically requested.Recommendation:-Secure the quotation in writing. And bring the written quotation with you. (Resolved my predicament at the cash counter.)-If questions not answered satisfactorily, courteously request a different representative. Les, his son Matt and David (not his son :) ) are thorough gentlemen!Would I return to the store?Yes, definitely Yes..
The best all around bike & ski shop in upstate NY.Professional advice guidance & service @ reasonable prices!Your complete store, servicing upstate for decades .
Hooked us up with rentals for the day -- great bikes and great service.
Great customer service. They fitted my new bike, that I bought from the internet, to me perfectly.
Paid $85 to get my derailers adjusted since the chain kept slipping and i couldnt get it to shift into 3rd gear. They fixed the gear issue, but the chain still continued to skip going up any incline. Took it back a 2nd time just to have someone tell me that it is a common problem that most bikes have. Best part is this is off a 3-5 year old bike I bought from them, which Ive hardly ridden. Im sure their are better places out there to go. I would take your business elsewhere.
Service and initial sale goes very well. Employees are friendly and willing to help. Problems are that the employees give misleading/incorrect information regarding their return policies. If youre unlucky enough to have to deal with the owners son, you will encounter a condescending individual who will talk over you and do everything he can to not work with the customer. Long story short, everything is great until there is an issue. This business operates on the premise of not caring about future business or good customer relations. If the business chooses to debate this review, for those that read this, realize I would not spend any time writing this if there was not a valid reason to warn potential buyers. Be very informed of their policies and procedures as each employee seems to contradict the managements perspective.
We bought trek hybrids and two bikes for my son at Plaines. Matt is a straight shooter, helpful, professional. The store has a lot of inventory and lots of elbow room to test out bikes. I highly recommend them.
Great.👍.excellence is top priority ..Matt is the Man👍💪
Im an informed consumer and I met Les personally yesterday. Maybe one of biggest knob ends Ive ever met. His sales approach was to not listen to what I wanted, but to keep talking about what he thought was great. His lack of product knowledge shocking and seemed to be making up things as he went along. After 15 minutes of his hard sell he realized he wasnt getting anywhere. About that time the door opened and someone else walked in. Then without so much as a good bye he walked off in the direction of the customer / victim and started his canned pitch all over again. I walked never to be back. He owns Broadway bike too.
Do not love this place. Chain snapped while riding the Erie Canal Towpath. Explained that we were pushing a tandem and trailer. They could not provide directions to their freakin store. Local pedestrian downtown assisted. They did not use the mobile van in their drive. They did not offer directions to NY Cycle on Congress St, who had the part, and installed it in less than 5 minutes of our arrival. NY Cycle filled our water bottles, offered advice and further assistance, not to mention good directions back to the trail passing a great bakery. Avoid the pains at Plaines and go to Congress St.
Great service, Better price than most bike shops
I was initially disappointed because my bicycle (seasonal service) was not ready when indicated by sales rep but they made good and repaired something that needed fixing and did not charge me for that particular repair. That is the way to keep the customer coming back. A professional relationship goes a long way.
Great friendly place, competitive prices & there staff was great...
Robby was super helpful despite the shop being very busy.
I love plaine and son bike shop the staff is friendly and know their info on the product in the store i will definitely be going back again :)
Clean, quiet, and the staff was helpful. We got skis for 175 when they were in Amazon for 400.
Every experience there has been positive
Extremely disappointed with the service I received from this shop. Very sloppy work that left my bike greasier than when I dropped it off. Grease on the frame, seat, and handle bars. A basic tune up does not include aligning handle bars with front wheel? Pathetic. Will never go back and plan to tell my friends to avoid this place of business. Overpriced beyond belief.
Great service, Very knowledgeable and ready to help
Stay away from this shop! What we knew as Plaines is NO MORE! Les Plaine (the psychotic owner) has fired anybody of value (well almost) and is terrorizing all the employees and every customer that comes through the door. His pricing strategy is right out of the 50s. Mark it up as high as you can and see how many sucker you can get to pay for it. His items are routinely priced way above MSRP and, when Les is around, its always a brutally hard sell. He owns several shops in the area, so beware!
Bought my bicycle built for 2 there. Great service.
I have been a employee of Les Plaines for three years and i have never found any of the things Richard Rathan is saying to be true. The poor review written by Richard Nathan is not because of any poor customer experiences but rather because of a personal grievance with Les the owner.
Great prices, good people.
Very knowledgeable and easy to work with.
