Me and Darwin were finishing up a pretty good sized job up on Forest Oaks. We had special ordered two or three thousand dollars in material from Home Depot.We needed to pick up some stuff, 8:30 at night, half an hour before Home Depot closed. So we grabbed a bunch of stuff that was going back - soffit, J & F channel, caulk - and headed up to Home Depot.Got there 8:35: realized I didnt have the receipt. No big deal. About $300 worth of merchandise. Just get the merchandise card. If it was absolutely necessary I could get a copy of the receipt from the pro desk, where it was special ordered. I had done it once before.I had the guy helping us return the stuff so I could go back in the store and grab beauty rings for the canned lights we had installed, different (white) caulk, and some other, miscellaneous type stuff.Our guy returned the soffit, extra can, caulk. Showed his ID. No problem.We went and bought the things that we needed with the card. He showed his ID.Got out of there around 5 to 9:00, didnt keep the Home Depot people waiting for us, got done with the job by about 10:30. Everybody was happy.No.So me and Darwin go up to Home Depot a few days later - decide to use the gift card to pay for the items were purchasing for our next job. At the check out, they ask for an ID. His didnt work. Mine didnt.Seems only the person who showing ID at the time of the return can use the returned item gift card.😱😱😱Only the person who shows ID at the service desk when the return is made can use our 300-plus dollar gift card.😱😱😱Now Im really pissed off. Theyre telling me its not our money. They know its our money because we ordered it at the pro desk. Now I want to talk to the store manager. The front end manager comes up. I express my concerns: store policy is what it is; we dont like it, we can shop somewhere else. But I require information first: where is this policy posted about returns without a receipt being issued a card good only to the person showing ID? No one told me about this policy when the purchase was made. And no one told us about it when we were up at the service desk to return it.The front end manager shows concern. He doesnt know how to help me, but he says hell take care of this. Now the guy standing in for the store manager shows. He cant help me. Nothing you can do. Store policy. I again express my concern that not only was I not told of the store policy when I purchased the items, I did not see where this policy was posted so I could be aware of it before the return was made. This guy who is the acting store manager tells me😒😡😠it is store policy NOT TO POST the store policy.😨😵😲And they dont post the store policy or tell customers about the store policy because😒😕😵the store policy is intended to be a deterrent to a person or people who might steal a gift card and try to use it.😵😒😕The very nature of a deterrent requires that people are made aware of the deterring policy: If you know that committing a murder will result in your execution, you may be deterred from committing that murder. If you do not know about the penalty for murder . . . where is the deterrent? There is none.Then Darwin pointed something out to me. If a potential Thief does not know he cannot use the gift card, hes going to go ahead and steal it. Now that person who had a $300 gift card is out his $300. The thief takes the stolen card to Home Depot and is not allowed to use it. He leaves the store and throws the card away. Its of no use to him. Well hes not getting any money. The guy who got the $300 gift card, hes out his money, wheres the $300? Whos got the money? Home Depot. And they always will have it. Its theirs now.
