Coffee was absolutely amazing. Seriously the most coffee coffee Ive ever had. They roast in store, so you can smell the coffee before you even walk in. Seriously incredible, I cannot explain how good this coffee is. I have never had anything thats this concentrated in flavor; its almost like an expensive chocolate in terms of pallette tastes. Again, literally the most amazing coffee I have ever tried
We ordered online for a faster to-go experience. But there was no point to it. They made the coffee only after we reached there to pick up. We did not like the taste of it. It was barely drinkable. We ordered 3 coffees we threw all 3 cups of coffee. We also got a rosemary twist which was smelling like a stale bread and had no flavor. I am not sure if ot was supposed to be so dry or it was stale. The place was clean. The staff was wearing masks. It was difficult to drink from those coffee cups while driving so we asked for straws but they were out of straws.
I love this place. One of the best specialty cafe in Tempe. However, the pick up orders last few times took longer than it should be, I’d to wait there for up to 30 mins. Dine in is great though.
I miss their scones (pesto tomato, i believe). The recent 3 times i’ve been there, they did not have the scones. Was it discontinued? The scones are my favorite pastry here and I would really like to see them back!
Coffee is a bit pricey but their cold brew is fist rate and the pastries, I believe, are generally made on site and some of the best in the area (in my perspective). I remember going here when it first opened and the owner was roasting the beans himself and his wife was running the register and had no idea it would grow so well and come to have multiple locations (though this is the original). Right up the way from the iconic neighborhood bar, Casey Moores so part of a little hot spot of great little places to eat and drink - when people come to visit Tempe and want to see the culture of the area, this is one of my go to places to take them.
Quiet place to work have a meeting or just relax. Never over crowed when I have been there. Favorite meeting spot when meeting clients. Also, coffee is some of the best in town...forget Starbucks it up Cartel
Good coffee. Was my favorite coffee shop until recently but something happened with the pastries and now it’s mainly sugary stuff. The only thing that was sweet was a bagel thing and it was not fully cooked and is inedible.
Im a big fan of all coffee houses. This place used to be great and has a nice atmosphere. But after Covid until now July/2021 This place collapsed. Every thing is getting worse and worse. I really recommend other places until they get back to normal.
Enjoyed the open and clean space. Very friendly atmosphere. Professional people around chatting and working on laptop.
This is my favorite coffee shop to visit when Im in Tempe. They always have friendly staff, there is ample seating, and the drinks and pastries are delicious. On my most recent stay in town, I visited two days in a row. Although there were other coffee spots closer to my hotel, I much preferred to walk a little further to Cartel. I dont get anything complicated, usually just a latte or cappuccino, but theyre always great with none of that burnt taste thats easy to find at some coffee chains. This place can get busy, but I dont mind waiting a bit for a quality product.
Who doesnt love them? Great vibes, amazing coffee, glad to be a day one supporter even though I rarely come in.
Ordered a $7 hot coffee and it was not hot at all I suppose I should have tried it before I left. Staff was not wearing masks. Still dont get allowing pets in a restaurant that serves food and drink. Eesh. Oh the coffee I got was the dirty chai. I would not recommend.
Best coffee shop in Phoenix probably. Got the fall matcha and it was delicious
Fairly chill location with good selection of mixed drinks and specially brewed single origins.
Found this place on Google and honestly what a terrible experience, I asked for a hot vanilla latte and looks like there was a miscommunication. Which is fine just re-make the drink right. Well not here so the barista called out a latte not vanilla latte and I grabbed it by accident because it was a hot drink, and the guy who took my order thought I meant an ice vanilla latte anyways then I take a sip and I realized its just a plain latte. And instead of re-making the drink he grabs the pump and brings it over to the counter and pumps vanilla syrup on it. And the staff definitely seemed bothered by me asking for more because its clearly not a vanilla latte I could see their stares its obvious. Also $7.75 for a small coffee that was made incorrectly and didnt even bother to re-make the drink is ridiculous.
I approached the walk up window (located outside) to order a coffee. I was informed I needed to wear a mask. I was instructed mask wearing, even while outside, is this company’s policy. I left very discouraged. I then walked 30 feet to the Kettle Black, without a mask, and enjoyed a nice cup of coffee with dinner.
Cartel is still best coffee shop in Phoenix. Every location has great baristas who always recommend a good drink. Coffee or tea is great! I’ve never tried any baked goods but overall feel at each shop is so unique.
The iced vanilla latte is truly the best latte I have ever had! Could not recommend more highly!
Super traditional, cozy, warm welcoming coffee shop for your favorite goers or those who just want to hang out and do some work.
Not impressed by the cold brew we ordered. I think the staff thought it was time to chill with their friends. There was at least 5 extra people that were just hanging out by the front counterjust laughing it up and making random loud noises. So much so that it was uncomfortable for us to get to the area of the counter were you pick up your drinks. Their friends just stood there in the way like we were interrupting them, they just stood there laughing away like this was perfectly normal. I hope that we just had an unusual experience and this isnt the norm.
Definitely an awesome and hip spot to be for coffee and tea. The most craft coffee and tea Ive come across in Tempe. Crowd is mostly comprised of a young and hipster crowd. There is a wall of bicycle wheels that suggest a note of bicycle culture which I was quite fond of. The music was on a loop and could of been of a better variety. I suggest this place as a meeting spot for a cycling group or club. Great place to get some caffeine and power for a cycle ride.
Convenient, great tasting coldbrew coffee and breakfast burrito
Really cool environment with a chill space to work on homework etc
This place is beautiful. I was told that Cartel is a place I absolutely must visit while in the ASU area, but I would argue that anyone in AZ and beyond should try it!Cartel Coffee Lab (and Cartel Brewery) are nestled in the Tempe scene, just walking distance from ASU campus and cherished by students and professionals alike.Enter, and youll see a large interior with a huge variety of seating arrangements - desks, tables, couches, benches, and coffee bar; take your pick! Music ranges from jazz, chill electronica, to the occasional (but welcome) reggae. As for the coffee, its fantastic. Cartel prides itself on sourcing independent coffee from the far reaches of the Earth. They have an excellent cold brew selection, and at night, you can sample their various beers as well. I havent tried the baked goods - yet - but they look scrumptious. In closing, visit Cartel, drink their coffee. Its a great business and a cultural stronghold of the Tempe and greater AZ community!
Really good coffee. Location is sparse, but their drip coffee is some of the best I’ve had. Robust, flavorful and clean. The beans I brought home were some of the best I’ve found in our travels. Baked goods were really good, too.
Brought my mom in this morning and asked for two pour over coffees - they said it would be 20min (10min per pour over, can only make one at a time). I’ve never heard of a coffee shop that can’t make more than one pour over at a time. Oh well. Can we use the bathroom? Sorry, bathroom is unavailable. Alright, I guess we’ll go with the $5 drip coffees instead (never paid that much for drip coffee but oh well) and some pastries. Can you heat the pastries up? No? I’m not even sure why I asked.
Poor welcoming and customer service.Later went to Snacks & Latte. Extremely welcoming and exceptional customer service.
Used to be a huge fan of Cartel, but it seems as of 06/15/21 this location is closed to the public. You go, all the doors are locked and theres a sign outside that says appointment only. Ive scourged the website and Facebook, even Instagram. No make an appointment link anywhere. I think theres a huge miscommunication going on and quite a mishandling of the COVID protocols which is damaging the business. Careful if you want to spontaneously take someone here, or even just want a quick drink, its impossible. It seems like this location is closed and youll have to go somewhere else.
Great coffee, friendly staff. Lots of room for chatting with a friend.
Grabbed a green iced tea while out running around. Great service and great tea! WIFI here and great sitting place to come and relax with friends or to even do some work. Am told this is the first of their locations that now are in Scottsdale and a couple in Phoenix and Tucson! Definately should make it one of your coffee stops where ever you are!
I had a wonderful experience at Cartel! I got a large iced agave latte with oat milk and it was delicious and the staff were super sweet! Also I really appreciate them taking precautions against covid with their mask requirement and limited seating. will definitely come again!
Without a dark roast i was bummed initially, but the full flacor mediumwas just right. My wife really liked the apple pop tart that was recommended by the helpful staff. Everything we wanted in a morning cofee stop!
Great coffee/tea and good vibes! Theres outdoor seating and some indoor seating, though you have to wear masks. Expensive for sure though.
The vibe was great and the people were nice. Did not absolutely love my coffee but it was not bad in any sense
So fist off all how dare this place have the audacity to charge $8.38 for a oat milk latte. This has to be the biggest rip off for the most mediocre coffee ever. To nickel and dime you for oat milk and a small drop of agave. Shame on the owner of this place! This is a plain rip off.
Im not sure why its popular... maybe because its on campus??? The worst macchiato Ive ever had, the drip coffee is good, but overall rather expensive coffee.
I was given a gift card and went to coffee shop to redeem. I live in ahwatukee area and closest location was in Tempe. Was told gift card is only good for online shopping thru Cartel! That was a low blow! A real let down to my 13 yr old kid and me. So not only did we waste our time by driving to Tempe, couldnt redeem the gift card! Disappointed for sure
So cute with great space, service and coffee of course
Loved every roast they make. Im so glad I only live a block away.
This place is so good! The coffee selection was very good and amazing.I also really like the workers, who are really welcoming and understanding.
Been coming here for 10 years and its my favorite phx coffee company.
Honey Lavender Matcha Tea and Cherry Chip Muffin was very good! 1st time and wont be the last
Great coffee and great vibe!
COVID-19 makes EVERYTHING weird, so seeing Cartel empty is definitely a Twilight Zone experience, but it is still the same fresh coffee and cool staff behind the Bar. While I am a coffee purist at heart, Cartel makes me feel less bad about wanting an alternative milk product in my mocha - but they wouldve earned the full 5 stars if they didnt charge an extra dollar for the switch.
The lemon bar was pretty tasty, but the matcha tea my friend and I had was not good, and overpriced to boot. I was actually really excited to try this place and was very disappointed.
Cartel Coffee the original new wave coffee shop that started it all in Phoenix. The Tempe location has evolved over time and continues to grow within its tiny space. The lastest layout offers max chill, plenty of couches. Why be in rush...Opt not to be on time for work, eat a rad biscuit and set the vibe up for the day.
Good tea and study space 👌 👏
They are great!! But they are still in 2020 and in the middle of the Covid crises 😂.
Great coffee, but bad service. They are not friendly or welcoming at all. Coming to work here during Covid has proven to be more of a hassle than a help as they make you wear a mask the whole time, don’t have an open bathroom and will kick you out after a few hours. Plus, each time I come in with my kids I feel like my kids are being an inconvenience to all the workers who stair and whisper about my kids.
The second best cup of coffee I’ve ever had was from here. Definitely the best cup I’ve had in Arizona 🙌
Came here with my boyfriend, and is one of my favorite coffee places. Ill never forget the chai I had there haha, though I originally wanted something else. High quality roasts and full bodied flavors. Come here for an authentic coffee experience. A chill atmosphere with jittery ASU students, great for studying!
They try hard but $6 for a red-eye? Also they over roast and burn their beans. It is a once in awhile place. Only if I walking and cant get to infusion .
Great coffee and atmosphere. Sip-and-replace policy, so if you don’t like that, don’t go. But, hey, Cartel, caffeine is a diuretic, meaning it makes one have to go pee, but you can’t use the bathroom. Look, I’m as freaked out about COVID as anyone, but to make me go to the Whole Foods to use the potty seems a little customer unfriendly.
LocalKindTastyCool
One of my favorite local caffeine hookups. Always friendly, always delicious.
My expectations must be high. Only two (small) sizes of drink, limited milk and flavor options, and even though I ordered two mochas, one of them ended up with no chocolate. I ended up having to go to Starbucks to replace the bad drink, because at least I can trust what they make.
Hipster place with great mocha, excellent chai.
Service is important..no matter how good the product is, service will ensure the success. I reached the counter and said this was my first time to help guide the conversation and asked what the specialty of the day is. The man behind the counter in between his loud sips of his drink tells me that the specialty drink is no longer available it was earlier but now its not. Nothing more to it. He then asks me if I like hot or cold sweet or not.. in between his big slurps.. I wanted to ask to have whatever he was having because it had to be good.. I mean Ive never had the cashier drink while discussing my order but hey whatever floats his boat...I ended up with a dirty chai and it was good not great. I wanted coffee but he told me to get the chai.. not a real good representation of a coffee shop, but since he was recommending it, it should floor me right? It didnt do much for giving me a jolt.. I tried my husbands mocha and it had good flavor. Would have preferred that for myself. I may try cartel again but I doubt Ill come back to this location.. the nonchalantness was too much for me
First let me start by stating that I am not a coffee connoisseur, I dont know different roasts or anything like that. I just know I like to order the largest size iced coffee with vanilla creamer or flavoring.I went to cartel coffee and I ordered a vanilla iced coffee, the person behind the register replied, Do you mean an iced vanilla late? Not knowing a thing about coffee and probably my fault for being ignorant about coffee, I said Sure and then they asked what size, I replied I wanted the largest. The total came to $9.25. probably the most I have ever spent on a single coffee. I thought, this is my first time and this place has great reviews, it better be good.It took like 5 minutes to make, I didnt care, I was there with a friend chatting away. When they called me up, there was a cup that was the equivalent of a McDonalds size small cup and as I asked for it was iced, about 3/4 of the cup was full of ice, not much coffee compared to ice and for being the largest cup I saw larger cups in the facility but that was the largest offered specifically for an iced latte. I cant believe it was $9.25. The taste was nothing special and Ive had definitely had much better before for far less cost ( most of the time half that price and I would get twice the volume). I did drink it all if that means anything to anyone.Atmosphere was nice, a little aggravating to see some people hogging a table with a laptop that were not eating or drinking the establishments products.
I love coming here! Each time Ive ordered a hot drink and gotten a cream heart. The coffee is just sweet enough to be good while not being over saturated with syrup. Atmosphere can be crowded due to college student studying, and the wait of 3-7 minutes may not fit those in a rush. Ive come both time on a day off so neither bothered me. Hope to keep coming back at the chance of a cream leaf next.
The coffee here is always good. Bonus, they roast there own beans so you get to take the coffee home with you!
Vanilla Latte with oat milk. Watered down coffee for 8$... not worth it.
Amazing coffee, great service and a laid back atmosphere where you can just chill. One of the best pour overs Ive had. The Esperanza Natural was the best and so was the Santa Isabel. Great roasters sourcing great beans and doing great things with those beans.
This place sucks. Not for people that do their own thinking. If youre a sheeple, this place is for you.
Places don’t improve much beyond what Cartel coffee is today. This place is all it’s own and Phoenix should be proud. A fantastic coffee shop that has worked out a model for co- working that still attracts creative people. They have a great product with a calm atmosphere that is perfect at night and during the day.
Damn fine cup of coffee. Pricey for a pour over, but fresh roasted and hand crafted.
Great atmosphere, amazing coffee, and fast wifi. Its the perfect place to sit down, hyper-caffeinate yourself and get some homework done. Best part, at the end of a long day once youre finished with your work, you can go back up and order a tasty draft beer. Only downside to this well respected establishment, in my opinion, they love to blast their music...can become distracting at times over on the East End of the coffee shop. The back section stretching north is a far superior venue for those intimate conversations, the trade off being this section lacks proper tables for laptops, and comfortable seating for group work. So your options are: awkwardly attempt to balance your hot laptop on your knees OR be subjected to the Baristas current taste in music. Overall, I really like Cartel, its a hip place which clearly takes great pride in their products, hence my 4 star rating. Cheers!
