Took lessons here a few years ago and always had a great time, theyve got a great selection of guitars, keyboards, records, sheet music, and a whole array of accessories. Its never been easier to support a local business. I highly recommend taking trip to see this place.

I bought my first guitar nearly 2 years ago from Dave. He was the most friendly and helpful guy of all the music stores in town. He sold me an acoustic Fender. This guy owns the shop, plays in a band, and knows music and instruments. I always get the feeling from him that he cares much more about his customers than the bottom line. I started lessons at his shop with Pete Larson in May of 2019. Pete is a rock star instructor. He is laid back and knows the guitar front to back and top to bottom. Top City Music, Dave and all his staff, the quality of customer care, products and service, give you a personalized experience that will bring you back time and time again. I HIGHLY recommend supporting Dave and Top City Music if you need instruments, lessons, records, advice, experience, etc. definitely go here...It ROCKS!

This facility thinks it is O.K. to continue operating when one of their employees tested positive for Covid-19 and they are letting him return to work after less than a week. They also have not notified most other employees. Pure ignorance.

Friendly atmosphere and friendly folks work here. Not the hustle and bustle which can occur in similar music stores. More of a home like atmosphere. Come one, come all, this is the place to be in Topeka.

While the outside of the building itself is rather unassuming and dull, the inside portion of The Live Music Institute is anything BUT boring. Leave the cold winter winds behind and step through those bright red doors into the warmth of rich interior, great music playing softly over the many wall speakers, and neon lights glinting off of the many beautiful, polished to perfection instruments. You may just find yourself daydreaming youre a famous musician playing an encore for your adoring fans.Everyone who works at the establishment are kind, courteous, and every bit of a professional in customer service AND music. The owner is often there, and though he is a tough (and sometimes shrud) businessman, he is also every bit of an honest and fair individual as you will find. And though I havent been able to sell him an album yet, I hope to one day find that one, allusive record that he wont be able to live without, and is a must for ANY collection!You can buy or rent an instrument from them, plus nearly every accessory needed for it. You can even sign up for one of the many private and/or musical classes they offer at reasonable prices. They buy and sell vinyl records of any size as well, and have an extensive collection to gaze at!

Dave and his crew are the most helpful, and friendly people you could ask for when purchasing a instrument, or needing questions answered. They have a ton of guitars, basses, and other gear to play with. They also have a killer record selection. Good people to deal with.

What a GREAT store this has become! Lots of new product lines like Fender, Marshall, and JHS, just to name a few. If youre into records, they have a vinyl room as well! If you are in the area, you really need to give them a look!

My son takes lessons here. Many great teachers are available to teach just about any instrument. Weve bought music, accessories, and a keyboard here. Very helpful staff, as well.

I havent done business here, and Im not sure how I would feel about doing business with a store that would allow the previous review to stand without taking issue with the charges leveled at one of his competitors and neighbors! LMI should encourage competition, and discourage name calling. I would take issue with the previous comment / review (#2) directed at Steam Music and the current Staff and Alumni. I have done business with Steam Music for most of their 43 years, and I have occasionally helped out when they needed me. I have over the years noted that several predominately Black Churches and literally dozens of African American musicians, Rappers, and DJs have made Steam their store of choice. Racist???? REALLY?? AND.....I know several openly Gay persons that have happily been customers of STEAM for YEARS! HOMOPHOBIC???? Come on....real musicians arent racists nor homophobic! REDNECK????....Possibly in some cases. In this case; REDNECK must mean....someone that respects other peoples views, and their freedom to believe as they choose without interference from anyone...including so called liberal thinkers!

This is where I always go to get my guitar strings. The owner is always helpful and doesnt make me feel like an idiot if I use an incorrect term, he just points me in the right direction.

Great selection, great prices, and super friendly owner/staff. The guitar tech they have does quality work and wont look down at you for not having an expensive guitar (like some other shops). I had him do a little neck work on my AX-400 and was very happy with the results/price.Also, if youre looking for a quality selection of rock and metal records, check here first. Ive found Iron Maiden, Dokken, Helloween, Pink Floyd, Twisted Sister, Dio, and Ratt.

Helpful and good setup, also have good teachers.
