Others before me have spoken of the croissants — rumored to be favorites of the French embassy here in Washington — and the pain au chocolat. But it’s the nutella croissant that the woman at the register recommends today, and it is glorious, an epiphany of flaky artistry on the outside and chocolatey hazelnutty creamy goodness on the inside, like a child’s treasure tucked inside a master’s craft. It’s the kind of pastry you can wind up wearing on your face, not with embarrassment, but with pride. And, even as we worry that covid is on the rise, I can’t help but hope that the person who invented it has been given a hug today. It’s only after I’ve already paid for my nutella croissant that I realize there’s a “chocolate suisse” in another pastry case closer to the exit . . .FOMO: 1My bathroom scale: An undisclosed multiple of pi.I regret nothing.
This charming little cafe makes me smile every time I come here (which is as often as I can!). The outdoor seating has the perfect ambience, and the sandwiches are excellent. They’re not your ordinary sandwiches, either - there’s something unique about each combination and I’ve never had one that I didn’t enjoy. No walk around Capitol Hill/Lincoln Park can be complete without a visit here!
I come here pretty often, typically in the morning after jog around Lincoln park or when Im headed to work. Most times when I do come it feels like I am not welcomed, especially when I go inside the store vs the walk up window.I definitely want to give kudos when due. There is one barista (multi color bob haircut) who is typically polite with me as I really enjoy when she attends to me. But unfortunately the same cannot be said about other individuals who work here. I never feel welcomed or wanted in their establishment.Normally I go to the walk up window to order but the line was long today so I went inside instead. When I walked in, no one was in line and I was not greeted or anything. A gentlemen who works there, who I believe is the owner or manager took his time before attending to me.After several minutes of just standing there, he finally takes my order (ice coffee w/ simple syrup) but still no greeting or anything, just yea. After paying for my order, as I always do, Im standing at the register while he makes the coffee so I can grab my it and leave. Instead of politely asking me hey can you please move to the side while I take other customer orders, he makes a repeated strong gesture with his hands for me to move to the side. Immediately when the next customer walks up can you guess what he say.... Hey how are you? How can I help you?Once my coffee was ready, instead of handing it to me, they placed it on the counter in front of the other customer and gesture for me to come pick it up.A part of me wants to believe that Im not being mistreated because of how I look but its hard for me not to see that, when I see others who dont look like me, treated with respect.Unfortunately this isnt my first negative experience with them. This moment pushed me to write a review that couldve been avoided. I will no longer come there.
Wow. Best pan au chocolat this side of the Atlantic. A woman in line there told me that the French Embassy is known to get their croissants from there.Espresso drinks are roasted very dark and served very hot, but excellent nonetheless. Fabulous tiny bodega inside, to boot. Enough said.
Lovely little place. There is a walk up window to order. We had a ham, egg, and cheese croissant, a chocolate croissant, a cappucchino and a coffee. It was $20, so a bit pricey, but I am sure their rent is pricey, too.
Ive been here a few times and always enjoy the drink I get. The guy whos usually running the place jokes that the machine is broken or just been cleaned to get me sad before he tells me hell make me a drink. Always a great time.
Lovely little cafe with a small, Bodega type store. Its right across the street from Lincoln Park, on the Hill. Coffee is very good, theres seating, if not, cross the street, and hang out with the Hillies.
Enjoyed this quaint cafe with a diverse selection of goods! Great wine and beer options, tasty pastries and other snacks, delightful drink menu, outdoor seating with view of Lincoln Park (great for seeing dogs 😊), and my favorite part is that it’s a small shop! Some cafes are overwhelming with options, but it’s easy to pop into this market, find what you need amidst a small, yet ample selection, and pop out. Definitely recommend!
A wonderful little cafe featuring high end / gourmet snacks, fresh coffee and espresso drinks, grab and go pastries and sandwiches, and artisanal pantry supplies, dairy, and wine. They’ve gone to great lengths to adapt to the pandemic - including maintaining a very nice, safely distanced array of cafe tables. Perfect for a rainy day sit with some espresso.Update - still a nice spot. But I wish the owners wouldn’t park their truck and Jeep (illegally) in the turn lane, making it harder to drive in the area and also blocking the tables’ view of the park.
Great neighborhood cafe with a walk up coffee and pastries window. Wonderful place to pick up a coffee or picnic supplies for a day at Lincoln Park!
Incredibly charming! I love their sandwiches and desserts. Its small, so can feel a bit cramped, but thats part of the charm.
This place has been an absolute lifesaver during the pandemic. Great coffee, great owners, cute dogs, tasty pastries and sandwiches, and place to work on my laptop outside and get out of my apartment?Yes please. Also a good pitstop prior to picnics in the park with a good selection of snacks, beer, and wine.
Great location! The guy was not nice, and I cant find all desserts 😐
This place feels like a European market and cafe. The friendly staff and owners offer an excellent selection of drinks at the take-away espresso bar window and a myriad of specialty food inside. These days, their special measures taken to reduce the spread of diesease is also appreciated!
Stumbled onto Wine & Butter on a bike ride few months back through Capitol Hill and Lincoln Park, was looking for a coffee shop that makes a great Iced Americano. So many of us are looking for just one destination to brighten our moods during this pandemic madness, maybe a place to tell friends we can meet for a walk or a stop-off on a bike ride. This is that place. I miss Europe. Dont we all miss Europe? Even the idea of traveling to Europe? Get an espresso drink or grab a bottle of wine here while youre at it, and youll get your European-vibe-fix with Lincoln Park sprawled across the way. Social distancing? Check that box. Tables set up a good distance apart. Order safely from outside through a window that is quaintly set up at knee-height, it brings a smile to your face. Dog friendly? Check, water bowl too. If Atilla is around he may be busy running the place but say hello, and make a suggestion; hell thank you for it. Always leave feeling just a little better about our world.
Great coffee but even better baristas! Lulu and John are our favorite stop at the end of a long day inside then a stroll through Lincoln Park. If you’re lucky, you’ll catch a sighting of the cutest golden retriever, Oscar, moseying about the plant filled courtyard.
Delicious sandwiches!
Super cute market right beside Lincoln Square! Great selection of cheeses, wines, sandwiches, and coffee. Friendly staff and super cute store.
Best coffee in town. Lulu and John are total professionals. Extremely Covid conscious and the best people in DC.
Poor COVID-protection protocols. Although I like this place, last time I attended the barista took his mask off twice while talking to me and serving coffee. I had asked him politely to put it back on and yet continuously took it off. I emailed the owners about this situation and unfortunately, they did not offer recourse into talking to their staff, nor an apology. If youre trying to keep healthy, perhaps this is not the best place.
Friendliest staff, delicious sandwiches and coffee, and great selection of market items. Super convenient to stop by before hitting the park.
Great little local shop with most of the essentials plus great coffee. Extensive wine selection as well as a good assortment of cheeses. Super nice employees and a pleasant place to sit both inside and on the patio.
The friendliest little market/coffee shop on Capitol Hill!
The friendliest little coffee shop/market on Capitol Hill!
Great little corner market. Serves Illy coffee at the coffee counter and has it for sale in cans. Sells interesting, fancy little foods and breads that are perfect to take across the street for a picnic in Lincoln Park.No vegetarian sandwiches, would be nice if theyd offer a veggie/hummus wrap.
Coffee was excellent. Staff was friendly. My son had their ham croissant and said it was delicious 😋
Wine & Butter took over from P&C Market just off of Lincoln Park and made a few minor changes that change the game...if they can pull it off.Whats the same: The food they offer. They have all the basic food for a pretentious Capitol Hill picnic from wine to cheese to organic iced tea. The expensive prices of P&C Market are the same too. My Honest Tea was $2.50, well over $1 more than any major grocery store.Whats different: They have a fancy looking coffee bar and menu serving lattes, etc (they brew Illy Coffee). They serve a few muffins to go with your coffee. They are working on outdoor seating (which is good since inside is too small to fit any tables) for warmer days.Wine & Butter looks really nice, but my biggest question is if they can survive the competitive DC food market. Lets hope those parents who frequent Lincoln Park bring their wallets for overpriced goods.
Delicious Baby Cakes and extremely helpful staff. Im so glad I stumbled upon this place. Will be going back soon. 😊😊
Great spot for a coffee!
This little gem is always a life saver! My son loves the lemonade.
Best coffee and nibbles on the Hill.
Quaint deli with higher end snacks, baked goods, and a coffee bar. Some sandwiches, wine and beer. A go-to in a pinch for dinner party provisions/le hors doeuvre. Outdoor seating.
What is up with the owner? He is extremely rude to people of color.
This place is great. Food is great, theres a great selection and the people are very friendly.
This tiny shop located on the Western edge of Lincoln Park serves a critical infrastructure to having weekend brunch plans on the park.
Nice little local shop, flower shop next door was 😎
Extremely nice products, high quality coffee and wines. Staff are extremely friendly and helpful.
Been there a bunch of times. Its nice
Love the scones, kind people, great coffee, awesome local French shop in DC
If you enjoy Illy coffee, delicious pastries, and generous smiles, this is the place for you.
Perfect little cafe - great coffee and sandwiches!!
Great beer selection, and nice patio to have a coffee with the dog!
