Never in my life have I been spoken to so rudely or disrespectfully.During my first visit to Mystery Pier, I was careful to read and abide by their signage, which indicated not to open any books. I picked up a book and was accosted by the owner Harvey. He reprimanded me and asked if I read the signs, saying I was not allowed to open books. I calmly explained I had no intention of removing the plastic or opening the book - I merely wanted to look at the cover & back to decide if I was going to purchase it. He repeated that I could not open the book. At this point, I wondered if perhaps “do not open the books” meant “no touching” so I placed the book back where I found it.Harvey snatched up the book, asked me if I had been to the store before, and stated they show the books to customers. I said I’d love to have him show me the book. He briefly turned the book and then set it down. I asked how much it was and was told $150 (which I was considering) when he continued in a condescending tone “Everything here ranges from $100 to $100,000” and promptly walked away dismissing us.My boyfriend and I were left flabbergasted, wondering what had just happened. Was he trying to say that we couldn’t afford the book or did not deserve to be there? Since when did touching a book equate to opening it? And why would a business have such bad customer service when we had been nothing but calm & polite?I sincerely hope Harvey was just having a bad day and took it out on us. But this encounter hurt my feelings and I immediately left the store, no longer wanting to support a business run by such a man.
Our first time here...Met both Owners (Father and Son) Harvey and Louis...WHAT FANTASTIC GENTLEMEN!! This place is SIX STARS by its self...with the book of knowledge both Men have to offer...Make that TEN STARS!! The price range can vary...but you do get what you pay for!! All FIRST EDITION Materials...As I promised them...WE WILL BE BACK AGAIN!! This is true history...built from a generation of the love of books...Thank you to BOTH GENTLEMEN...They made is feel...literally at home...
Great place. Wonderful selection of first editions.
What incredible and comfortable experience visiting this iconic first class book store.... Both owners were very welcoming and friendly.
I’m very late leaving this review... However, I had to make sure I followed through with my promise. This place is a gem!! I was in town visiting a friend and we stumbled across it in July. I can only equate leaving the busy city street, walking through the passageway and finding a beautiful garden and cottage to walking through the wardrobe and finding Narnia! Instead of Turkish delight and animals, we were greeted by the kindest older gentleman whom ran the shop. He shared so many stories, showed us treasures like the original printings of Tolkien and Steinbeck! We felt like guests in his home. I highly recommend visiting if you love books, history, and great experiences. And although I’m not a celebrity, he let me take a picture with him. It made my trip extra special! I hope to visit again one day!
Great store. A lot to see. Way...bigger than it looks!!! Lots of interesting finds in this store. Fair prices and many different books and even author autographed books!!!
My friend and I aren’t from around and Harvey took his time to show us around and go into detail about the books around the store as well as the authors.
I stumbled in to this gem of a bookstore. If youre every in Hollywood, be sure to check it out. They have everything a traditional book lover would want!
Is is everything you want in a bookstore. Its designed to make browsing easy, with tables up front where they group books by new releases or sale books or by theme. The back half of the store is laid out in traditional topics.
Theyre not all talk. The owners are very eager to show you the first edition books and signatures. As a physics student I loved hearing about Albert Einsteins theory of relativity signature. Highly recommended for a cool visit. Also, got a $35 priced tee for 25!!
This is probably the best childrens book store West Hollywood. Its pretty much childrens book heaven. The staff is so helpful! If you come in to the store with a specific need, but are not sure what book to get, they will always make great recommendations. If you go into the bathroom they have autographs of so many famous childrens authors.I love love love it here!
My daughter, a book lover, always wanted to visit this store. One day my husband and I surprised her with a visit at college, and drove her to Mystery Pier. While we were there my daughter had Harveys undivided attention. He is an intellectual man. She speaks his language. As we were leaving, fascinated, she exclaimed, I just had a breathtaking experience. One day, I will be back to buy a marvelous First Edition! Her father and I believed her. Still do.
Never been but would love to
I am Grateful-that I had the ability to connect with this amazing store. I hope to be back soon and visit again :)
First edition books, many of them autographed! Louis & Harvey are great!
A bookstore that carries nothing but sci-fi, fantasy, horror, and other geeky fiction that also has a coffee shop attached. . . what more could you ask?
It was not open yet when I went. I will go back when they open and update this.
Hands down the best book store in Los Angeles. Harvey? What a class act and true gentleman...
Amazing first editions!
On my bucket list.
Awesome place
