I love visiting independent booksellers. This quaint bookshop had a pretty wide selection of books particularly in history, culture, and childrens literature. The book prices are a steal and the location is great. Situated right off of University of Vermont and within walking distance to City Hall and Lake Champlain, you can grab a good book and find outdoor seating right in the square. You can even grab a pint of icecream from Ben and Jerrys right down the street.
I’d like to be very forward. I myself work in a book store and as a bookworm myself I’m always excited to visit new places, and I know my experience was individual, so it most likely will not apply to others. As a human who can appreciate books, this store was a cozy little haven right on church street, and if my experience went differently I would absolutely come back to this store, but unfortunately, my experience here was not pleasant. I have been diagnosed with intense social anxiety which causes me to have physical reactions such as tics and twitches when I’m in situations that are stressful or I’m feeling intense emotion. On a crowded street like church street with no masks, my anxiety had increased and I was ticking throughout my browsing through the store, I was also diagnosed with OCD recently, and one of my compulsive habits is to read things twice so I don’t forget them. I also had neglected to take medicine I had needed that morning, which is my fault, but the withdrawal effects cause drowsiness, which I believe was something which had lead to my experience in the store. At one point when I was looking at a section, I saw one of the employees with another person, looking at me and whispering to each other. They were kind of staring at me, so I smiled, trying to be polite, and I heard the woman say “that’s her” to the man. After that point, the two of them were loudly whispering about me, just a couple feet away, obviously thinking I was intoxicated in some way talking about calling child services, and mentioning that I was hyper fixating on titles, when really I was just reading everything twice. I had tried to just ignore them, even though I was pretty uncomfortable, and walk into the second room but they had followed me, and I attempted to continue browsing. I became really uncomfortable when they started looking at books, and when I looked over at them, the woman said that “she’s onto us”, or something along the lines of that, and so I went over to the friend that I had come with. And the woman had said “she’s with a friend”. I was incredibly frustrated and anxious, so I was ticking more, and after that point my friend had purchased a few books and we left. I am not one to write reviews. I haven’t before this point. But this experience was so embarrassing and frustrating to me that I felt I had to write about it. The bookstore itself was absolutely lovely, and I’m so disappointed with the attention I had received in the store. Honestly, if you’re looking for a quality store with good authors and a nice selection, they’ve got it, but personally I will not be revisiting this location. I was there to buy books, not be profiled by an employee who had assumed I was intoxicated. I’m a minor. I’m applying to college. Drugs and alcohol would heavily mess with my medication. I am interested in pursuing political science, and I most certainly would not wouldn’t risk my future to be high in a bookstore.
This little bookshop offers both used and new books. Most of the used books were in the 8-9 dollar range and were gently used. There were so many interesting and odd titles I’d never heard of before! The vibes are immaculate too— gorgeous wood flooring!
I make it a point if it is to the store every time I am in Vermont. They have a great section of books. Summer books. The staff is always courteous and extremely helpful I highly recommend it.
What an incredible little store! I found so many new books at ridiculously low prices, and quality used books in great condition. I wish this place was in my hometown.
I love that this place has a mix of used and new books. There is a pretty good selection and its very cozy. A must visit when you are in the downtown Burlington area.
Scarcely discernable from your own local indie bookstore, yet nevertheless brilliant. Diverse range, charming prices, stellar location. Grateful for the treasures Ive annually plucked from Crows shelves on trips north.
This place is the most unfriendly bookstore I have been to. The entire time I walked around three you girls just hung out behind the register looking at their phones without saying hi or acknowledging uou even existed. Much different than the other bookstore I came from down the street
Great selection of books and friendly staff. Great place to buy books in Burlington.
There is nothing better the a local bookstore for atmosphere and hidden gems. As soon as I stepped through the door I felt that thrill I got as a child heading to the library in search of my next great read.
Small book shop and perfect for used and new titles. They have a variety of second hand books and if you enjoy reading youll be sure to find some hidden gems.
Very friendly and helpful staff, lovely selection of books.
Glad to see that an old-fashioned, second-hand bookstore still exists. Very quaint and very organized. Clerks were helpful and available.
Absolutely love this bookstore. Small but just enough
Great people. Good book selection
Awesome selection of used and new books. Curated collections of staff picks in a cozy setting with very knowledgeable staff! Way more fun than going to B&N
Lots of different genres. Quaint little bookshop
Carefully curated bookshop, worth a rummage.
Small local store with good selection
Such a cute little bookstore for both adults and kids.
Great ambiance, cool crowd, nice staff. It would be 5 stars if they had a bit more of a selection.
Walking into this bookstore is like being transported into the small-town store of your dreams. Think Belle singing to the bookstore owner - But youve read it twice! Its my favorite!Anyway... this bookstore smells lovely and has a great selection, especially concerning history. You can also buy books from them online and pick it up instore, which is a great alternative to buying from the mega-giants for the same price.
This is my favorite bookstore that I’ve ever visited. I used to live in Burlington and went here all the time, now I just make do with a big trip whenever I’m in town. This store is always comfortable and welcoming, with floor to ceiling bookcases that are packed with wonderful books. It’s small, so they emphasize quality of content - while still managing to stock an amazing variety and quantity of books. They sell both used and new, old but impactful, new and notable. I also love that they have a little Vermont section - both VT authors and books about it.Walking through today I saw the following titles:There ThereInfinite JestUlyssesBi - queer theoryBecoming Michelle ObamaHousing and Raising Chickens (paraphrasing)Kombucha Recipe bookWicked Vermont (basically notable evil people from Vermont)Field Guide to MushroomsGo there for yourself. Go there for your friends. Get books to give as gifts that people will actually thank you for - and support a small bookstore, in a brave little state.I found a book there in 2017 that I constantly kick myself for not getting - hope they stock it again someday (see photo)
Nice little bookstore with a fun selection of genres. Very reasonable prices for new and used books.
The coolest bookstore that Ive been to at the greatest location, church street! The store is so unique and has the greatest employees! Love!
I can’t believe how long it took me to finally visit! So glad I did! The staff is friendly but will totally leave you alone if you’re just browsing. The shop is small but they can order pretty much anything and it arrives very quickly. Highly recommend and glad to support a local shop!
Absolutely adorable shop. It smells like books and the staff are so welcoming.
I was looking for several authors in used paperbacks. Found none. I wont go again.
Nice store with a good selection. Easy to navigate to the subjects you need. Very friendly staff. We grabbed a few Stephen King books. Would definitely recommend a visit.
Come for the thoughtfully curated books and stay for the cozy, warm atmosphere; Crow Bookshop is easily my favorite haunt on Church Street. One of a dying breed, this small shop sells new and used books perfect for the casual onlooker and serious book-lover alike. I always seem to find myself here, perusing the shelves while waiting to grab a comfy leather armchair whenever Im in the area. 10/10 a hidden local gem!
Great place if your looking for literature study books
Crow Bookshop has such a quant, comfortable atmosphere with great quality books and other products. Lovely customer service as well. Hope to visit again on my next vacation to Burlington.
Love it.
Always find great hidden treasure hiddening on there shelves! So friendly and helpful. So Happy there here in Burlington VT
An excellent selection of new and used books. The staff is exceptionally friendly and helpful. This bookshop was so good that while traveling, I bought a t-shirt from them to remember them by, after spending $140 on books. I regret nothing.
Great secondhand bookstore, there’s always something new I find to read when I go. I love their book appraisals too, the credit they give you is fair and a great way to get new books.
This is the kind of bookstore I always wanted to own but somehow never got around to buying. They do it right, and while it aint exactly the New York Public Library, size- or volume-wise, or even City Lights in San Francisco, please do stop in the next time youre strolling down Church Street.I found books I never even knew but always hoped existed.Crow Bookshop is a treasure trove you should visit.
Indy Bookery. Odd selection. Staffing is similarly odd. Fun, eclectic, unexpected.
Really nice, helpful staff. Great prices. Super cozy, and tiny space for reading if youre there when its not occupied.
Probably best bookstore Ive ever seen:) Really cool place, with large selection.
Cozy little bookstore. A must-visit whenever Im in town. Its well organized and priced, but my only wish was that thered be more to choose from. The mystery and other fiction sections are definitely a little light compared to the non-fiction offerings here (which make up a the majority of the store.)
Cute store
A quaint bookstore with unique books that you cant find elsewhere. Very nice staff and easy to find what you are looking for. Highly-recommended!!!
Great selection and placement of both newer and older books and also a very nice childrens section. Loved the ambiance, felt nice and smelled deliciously of book.
I love this place! Ive literally never left without buying something. Great selection of used books (and some new).
When you go in just to look and you walk out with an armful of books, you know its a good bookstore. Great selection, helpful staff. Find all sorts of usual and unusual reads.
Crows book selection is outstanding for the floorspace that the business has. I have never had a negative interaction with any of the staff. 10/10 would recommend as a good used-bookstore to go to here in Burlington.
Its very rare to go to a book store and find the poetry section is busiest one. That happened to me a Crowd Bookstore. And of course, they had a amazing selection on poetry, used books and new prints. I went there to find one book and ended buying three Ive been looking for in a while. The staff is super friendly and helpful. They are very organized and although I didnt check their selection thoroughly, the little I checked amazed me. This is a bookstore of a city with people who read! If your visiting its a place to check.
Nice selections
My favorite book shop in downtown burlington. My 7 year old loves it here. Its got a great collection of books, a quaint anf comfortable feel, and extremely pleasant staff. Whats not to love?
Very interesting place, you will never know what you might find.
A great bookshop in Burlington that carries both new and used editions, giving you lots of choices. They offer a remarkable selection in a bright, modern space.
Appropriately named. Shiny books everywhere!
I am all in for local bookstores. This place is very cozy yet spacious enough to surf from shelf to shelf. A few more chairs would make it a paradise for readers 👍Helpful staff.
Nice little shop.
The selection is top quality, and the prices are great. I walked out with four books.
Crow Bookshop!!!! I have been going to Crow since it opened in 1995 -so I have been going there for 22 years! Although I was living two hours away at the time they first opened- I would plan book runs several times a year! They sell used books - as well as new books at a discount. They are small - - but I always find a book or books that interest me! There are certain types of books - like cookbooks that they have shelves of - other sections are smaller - Now I live about 1 1/2 hours away - -but I make detours just to go to crow when I am on the Western Side of the state. My own interests lie in history -any age - philosophy - psychology, especially the more foundational of Freud, Adler, Jung, R D Laing and others - anthropology from around the world, sociology, Womens topics - as well as Science Fiction. I believe that a number of professors and grad students at nearby University of Vermont - often trade their books at Crow - so I always find books that I have been looking for and/or ones that I really needed to know about. In addition - -their Crow logo is great - and they often have short and long sleeved colored T-shirts that make great gifts - - for loved ones or yourself! My favorites for my brother had the black crow logo on a teal and a red long sleeved shirt - he wears them all the time!
Was a little disappointed with the prices and selection. I enjoyed looking at the cooking books section but not much else than that. Their sci-fi section was a disappointment. Although some of the sections were small I had no problem navigating the bookshop. Everything was well organized.
Wide variety, great selection of used books. Something for everyone, including children.
Small selection but great atmosphere and really helpful staff
Great selection of books. Reasonable prices. Helpful staff.
I know it is an odd belief, but I find some sort of deep comfort when acts of serendipity happen when you are discovering a new place. Like you walk into a bookstore about 300 miles away from home and just happen to find a book of poetry written by the very poet you will be teaching classes about in two weeks. A poet who earned his salt in prison - where he learned to read and write. An obscure modern poet. Also, the same author who will be writing the preface to your new collection of poems - from your pen and from the poets at the prison where you teach.Such was my visit to The Crow Bookshop. It did not hurt that the bookstore is named for one of my favorite creatures.Of the thousands of books available in the store, I must say that it had the best collection of poetry I have seen in a while - which is here-to-fore unheard of. Bravo The Crow Bookshop. Its location in down town Burlington, Vermont is perfect. The staff are extremely warm and helpful. The selection is what I would expect from a great bookstore. It is varied, comprehensive, and features a fine collection of local Vermont authors.I would go out of my way to get to this place. It is worth your visit.
Hands down this is the best used bookshop in Burlington. Ive been going here for years. Dont be afraid to ask a question, the staff is quite helpful.
An enormous selection with very helpful staff. Also, pretty cheap prices
Good prices for good books. Friendly staff and cool stickers too!
Cute place, but some of the prices seemed a little high for the used novels (their new books were similar to Amazon prices) and the YA and Fantasy sections were abysmally sparse.
Crow is one of Burlingtons wonderful independent booksellers with a wide array of used and new selections.
Excellent used book shop, a wonderful way to share and reuse knowledge.
Great book shop. Awesome selection.
There was a great variety of books and the staff was helpful. There was a stage in the back that I have deduced is for public readings...
Friendly service, peaceful atmosphere for browsing.
Love this book store. You never know what great books you will find.
Smaller store but good selection of local books
Great food and ambiance. The popularity has led to really looooong waits during any peak times.
Quiet, cute, never know what youre going to find, and easy to find help.
A classic, diverse bookshop that also pays for used books with store credit. Relaxed, helpful staff.
No visit to Church Street is complete without a stop in Crow Bookshop. Always has a great selection, even for relatively obscure or specialized topics.
An amazing bookstore that sells great books for an even better price
Nice selection. Nice atmosphere.
This place is awesome...nice selection of books and good music. A great throwback real bookstore.
Great selection of new and used books. A good place to consign unwanted books as well.
Great atmosphere and nice selection.
Great selection of used and new books!
Incredible new and used book store!
A nice used bookstore to spend some time in. I always enjoy checking out the staff picks.
I always pop in here when Im in Burlington. Really cool bookstore.
First visit and it was grand! I left with four picture books and a novel, all are for personal enjoyment:)
Just a hot selection of fine books to tempt the intellect. Im
A friendly little bookshop with lots of great books.
Love the books! Gets a little pricey
Cute little bookstore!
Small store with a limited selection, but the Vermont authors section is nice to have.
They had a wide selection and the staff was very friendly. I stopped in randomly and it was a highlight of my day in Burlington.
Best bookstore in Burlington. Mainly secondhand, but some new as well.
My favorite bookstore in Burltington.
Great little book store
