There is no experience like it! Those who come will agree. Great food, outstanding service, really responsible store looking out for the planet and for those shoppers who have special needs, like those who are neurodivergent (the soft lighting is so soothing). They are always willing to give me the tare weight of my own containers for the bulk items or the hot bar. The sandwiches are still great even though they are no longer made to order. The produce is always fresh and I LOVE supporting local farms. Dont forget to pick up some fresh baked bread from several local bakeries! Great place to buy things to feed your body and nourish your soul!
This place is the best! Kyle from customer service was so helpful and kind and he went above and beyond to help me find what I was looking for! Highly recommend to any who is in Burlington
Nice selection of fresh food & spices. Wish they had more frozen veggies in stock & better prices
Food quality - 5 starsPre-made food - 5 starsPrices - a little high - 3 starsLines - way too long - 2 stars. I know they like to pay real people living wages but if they cant get enough employees they should get some self checkout lanes. Ive twice walked out of there instead of waiting. And Ive waited 15 minutes sometimes.Hours - not open late enough - 2 stars. As the only grocery store downtown serving people who may not have cars, cutting back the hours so it closes at 9:00 p.m. instead of 10:00 p.m. is ridiculous. If this is a staffing decision then install self checkout lanes so you can have enough staff to do other things.
Very good selection of healthy and sustainable products. I love this little store
From its beginnings In the 1970s, the Onion River co-op has grown from a group addressing the lack of grocery stores in the area to a not-for-profit place finely tuned to the needs and preferences of the community. It specializes in quality, freshness, and variety to match the citys diversity. You can join the co-op for a small fee, and get discounts on purchases. Members get a rebate at the end of the year based on the co-ops earnings and the amount the member spent there for the year. Members also get discounts for participating in volunteer work, such as working with Local Motion to support the Bike Ferry. It is a great place for people watching, and you can rest assured of the quality of your purchases.
Well sorted and practical market at the center of Burlington. Excellent prices and variety.
The atmosphere is pleasant. The workers are always willing to help. The checkout lines are extremely long which adds to wait time in a small space. The sushi tastes perfect everytime. There is a large variety to choose from. The sushi is always fresh too. The pastries are delicious.
This is when I go to grocery stores in Burlington. I prefer the South End ones at the downtown because its less crowded and they have different options that I enjoyed more. It is quite pricey but the quality is very good.
A great grocery with tons of local goods. It can be more expensive than other grocery stores if you usually buy conventional and boxed goods. I find it easy to navigate and efficient to shop. Some things that set it apart: bulk foods and items and like pasta, granola, spices, tofu, seitan, dried grains and beans, flours, sugar, nut butters, teas, and even oil, syrup, soap and detergents, and more. Lots of organic options, decent world food section, a great call-ahead sandwich department and great hot and cold food bar with many interesting options including vegan and vegetarian. They often have the other things youre looking for when you expect to find them, sleds and shovels and trees in the winter, grilling stuff in the summer. Nice plants and flowers, nice selection of health and body products as well if youre looking for more natural and [whatever]-free options. Small parking lot, but its very convenient if you live or work in town.
Great grocery store and recommend it to anyone although the street that it sits beside is a disaster. My compact SUV literally bottomed out briefly driving around the potholes. Kinda ridiculous. Not sure how this kind of neglect is possible by the city, or the grocery store.
Super friendly staff. A mix of high end, organic food, and thrifty every day items. Great selection of each.
The staff wins worst customer service award. There are a few good ones but the majority will leave you shaking your head
I wish all grocery shops had this vast amount of local support in products and produce.
Yes, I love this store. They have a great selection and accommodating staff. With that said I had to knock a star off for the lack of freshness in some of their very overpriced items. Produce for example is hit or miss. Ive bought multiple avocados or mangos at a time, waited for them to ripen, only to see they were all rotten inside. Yet other times these items are perfect. I also think they leave their fresh bread out for sale way longer than they should. I once nearly chipped a tooth on a rock hard baguette I attempted to eat the same day I got it. Another time I bought a flat bread with sundried tomatoes on it that was full of tiny bugs. A third time I bought a half loaf of fresh local bread that should have been a couple days of sandwiches for my family, but instead it was all molded on the second day. All these incidents took place within the past few weeks, and Ive multiple other similar experiences. Im on a budget so to realize the main brunt of what would have been a meal for my family is not actually useable can be pretty inconvenient. I also dont usually have time to walk back to the store to ask for a replacement. Also, the downtown store has a very chaotic line-up system, especially with new social distancing guidelines. Ive had people cut in front of me, accuse me of cutting, or get mad that they didnt know the system and werent even standing in line at all. They really need to make ONE line that feeds into different registers to avoid these stressful types of situations.
Phoned City Market today and asked Do you have the EVOL frozen dinners? The lady replied, Wait a minute and Ill go check. She came on the phoneline and said Yes we do! So I walked over (from the waterfront...uphill to the downtown store...I am 81 yrs old, have a busted bursa in my right hip, and Meniere falling down dizziness... so I used my walker, pushing it uphill; determined, as Evol meets my nightshade allergy prevention and protein needs.Arriving, I went straight to the area... but found no Evol frozen dinners. I asked an attendant, he did not find any Evol. I asked another attendant, he did not find any Evol. A third person said, If we had them, theyd be in the display ...no other place to store frozen dinners.I pushed my walker home. My hip is really hurting, as well as the groin hernia (surgery coming)...wondering between breath-taking pains, why the girl answering City Markets phone said shed check.?? And, does that City Market employee realize the pains her careless (lying) answer is causing me?
Fast check out! The cashiers wont let you stay on the line, I wish I could stay inside getting the fresh scent but I gotta go. There are helpful and caring cashier, they take 100% of their paycheck and put 100% of their effort.
I like the co op, but i got a spicy chicken sandwich from the grab and go sandwich section and it wasn’t spicy at all. like not even a little kick. i know this is vermont but like come on. other than that great place but please make your chicken sandwiches spicier
Other than being bit pricing City Market is one of my favorite spots in downtown Burlington he shot in smm2 speed in Hangout I really feel like Im part of the community when I got there or when I just sent you this or if theres ever any questions or problems I have people are eager and able to respond quickly and accurately it makes me feel much more then do any of the big box grocery stores in town it may offer a larger selection with a bit lower prices but wake me up soul
It has great options and fantastic baked goods, but the lines are unacceptable. Waiting 15+ minutes to cash out in an off peak time is crazy.
I love the smell of a co-op. It brings a sense of health and community to me...
Love that I can buy organic and local items here. Staff is wonderful!!
A labyrinth of Top Quality produce, a wide variety of prepared to go side dishes and meals, and a fantastic blend of delicious Co-OP style foods/and bulk items with popular favorites from your general grocery stores. A beautiful display of local cards and gifts.
Very fun cheese selection!!! Deli staff very friendly and helpful. We stock up there when we visit Burlington!
The default Grocery store and market of Burlington and the UVM campus. As alright as it gets. Good selection of products, decent customer service; however be prepared to pay for the added convenience and for the added cost of healthy or prepared food... For inexpensive bulk & ingredients go to the larger grocery stores or local ethnic markets. Relatively good for small items or the odd purchase
Prices are up up but what do you expect it’s city mark-up. Good products but I’m going to stick to online ordering personally can’t deal with all the yuppies and boomers in the store.
By far the best grocery store in town. I prefer downtown. But Flynn ave is 5 stars as well.
Nice food co-op. Well stocked.
The baskets of small cuts of different cheeses are great for trying new varieties.
Always great selection of brands, local products, an house prepared foods. Great stop for a picnic outing!
Really cool spot to pick up fresh fruits, veggies and everything in between.
Very professional staff, theyve worked extremely hard to accommodate the community during the pandemic.
Good healthy options in all departments. Very good store made foods. I balance this store with a traditional supermarket for certain items. Prices are higher here than the traditional supermarket for same items. I definitely couldnt live without City Market, though.
Great place love farm stands everything about it is great youll
Questionable financial and management issues here, cannot recommend.
Always love stopping in this Co-Op when i am in Burlington.
Cool co-op! I belong to my local one and it is just as great. Groceries and wine/ beer are amazing here.
An excellent selection of fresh produce, along with a wide variety of items in other departments. A grocery store to be proud of in a smaller city.
Friendly and helpful staff! This is always my go-to grocery store or if i need some something really specific. Always have a great selection.
Great select of beers. Fruit was fresh and tasty.
I am glad it turned out they were only closed for a day, I assumed it was a week and missed them for fair prices and selections. They have all types of meat and goodies from A to Z. Would be great if they carry rabbit food..pellets, but otherwise I like all the goodies that are affordable only a decent walk from my house.
They have reverse osmosis filtered water I need. I enjoy shopping here but its too far away to be my regular store.
This is one of my favorite places ever. Fun, funky staff, outstanding selection. It aint cheap, but I find that the quality is usually very high. I tend to avoid the hot bar; I dont think its a great value. The sandwiches, however, are fantastic. And the cozy eating area is one of my favorite wintertime people watching spots.
Such a great place to grab the groceries you need!
Constantly felt if all eyes on me. With the 200%,mark up on all products you would think the employees would have ma etiquette classe
Great staff and variety of products!
I love City Market, because its the only place that I can find Libertys Yogurt. Its the best yogurt on earth ! They also make an awesome curry chicken in a small or large container ! YUM 😋 !
Offers a wide variety of local product for a good chunk of change. Definitely not a one-stop-shop in terms of grocery needs but rather where to go to find a defining flavor of a dish, bulk products in zero waste packaging, hot and ready cafe quality foods, or a daily coffee/tea/broth run. Kind staff but a damn slow checkout line, so budget that in.
The Woodchuck sandwich made my partner impotent.
Love the city market. Especially the bulk items.
Great staff, great products. What more can I say.
Best co-op in the entire country, if not world. Well organized, incredible selection, local produce and goods, reasonably priced for the quality of goods offered, the only place I want to grocery shop.
Standard co-op offerings. Open later than other stores in area.
An absolute staple for any meal! Im a member and get better rates, but theyre pretty decent even before then.
Great organically oriented market. Lots of delicious grabngo meals. Nice veggies/fruits selection. Always find what I need when I go there.
Good food at high prices, but its to be expected from a co-op
Best selection of food and goods! Also wonderful selection of live plants
The city market club slaps.
I have always loved this grocery store. Great selection of everything. Great seafood counter, meats, cheeses, produce, wines, beers. Nice friendly people.
Always a pleasure to shop there 😀🙌😉
Used to be better. I think this place has gone downhill over the years. I am glad there is Trader Joes nowadays because it is more affordable than city market. Customer service has gone down hill also and parking is pretty difficult sometimes. Its good if youre in a pinch or need something hard to get, but not for regular everyday purchases
So Im not a vegan, or a crunchy hipster. This is a fantastic market, you should probably bring your own bag(I popped in on vacation maybe Portland has a plastic bag ban?)Bulk stuff, fresh actually human cut non vacuum pack meat, ugly health produce. We were also able to pick up some pepperoni, name brand crackers and a fantastic selection of cheese. stop in for a quick one or do a fancy meal planning.
If you are staying in the area for a short period of time, this place is perfect. Its very clean and ready to find what you need. Honestly, the food is better and faster than other local places if you just want to grab a breakfast sandwich and go!
Great selection and a great deli.
Tons of local products! i wish there was a store north of Burlington so i could go more often
Dank foods. I recommend the blue ledge richville cheese with persimmons on crackers. The chicken livers are delish as well.
Great variety and selection. Clean and organized. Package as you go!?! Love it!!!
Its expensive besides that not bad if you like traineys
Wonderfully run place stocked with fresh selections
Everyone did a fantastic job in making our grocery delivery / curbside pick-up possible! The correct items were picked out & delivered efficiently & with care. Everyone I spoke with was friendly & helpful. Thank you to Steven & the rest of the team! We really appreciate yall & all of your hard work!
Good selection of organic produce and other products. A bit on the high-end price wise compared to other organic, locally-sourced stores.
Wonderful people, great selection!
Best local grocery
This is oddly enough, one of my favorite places to grab lunch out in Burlington. I love the prepared hot food from the deli. They always have a large variety as well as a great salad bar. Healthy food with vegan and vegetarian options. Highly recommend!
The south end City Market is way better. This one is too congested and people don’t seem to understand how to follow the social distancing markers on the ground. Parking is also a nightmare and delivery drivers tend to be rude and lawless. A shame.
Great place with good people
Overpriced, pretentious and keep their staff in poverty.
2 entrees are all you need.
Wonderful people working there. The food is always fresh and tasty. The prices are a bit high though.
Highest quality foods and vibes. Support your community shop local and thrive.
Cute fairly upscale supermarket. Feels like a more local and authentic Whole Foods.
Really nice selection of local and specialty produce. Also really solid seafood department.
Great prices. Try the hot case salads/sandwiches, maybe after COVID anyway.
Awesome, great market with a great selection of food, cheeses wines and beers. if Im ever back in Burlington Vermont I will definitely come here again
Very rude deli clerk named marilee cornelius. She seems to think shes very important, treating others as tho shes better than them. She really needs a lesson on life and playing nice or at least stick around once she starts talking smack.. not then go and hide.. Sad you have to resort to hiring employees such as her.
Best co-op Ive visited
I love shopping here the service is good the only thing I do not like is the price on the products to high.
The plantain chips I bought was expired... didnt know till I got home and was half way thru the snack... also an expensive place to shop
