This spot has an awesome selection of books, and a lovely little childrens section with blocks and a small table. The coffee is tucked away a bit and has its own seating area. The coffee was okay, they serve it all in to-go cups which isnt my favorite. I heard a lot of people ordering their lattes, so maybe those are better than the cappuccino I got. We got tiramisu as well which was actually really good! It looks like an awesome place to cozy in with a good book, or to get a gift! Wish we had more time to browse!
Pros:Great art available in the store with a lot of unique gift ideas. I adored looking through the little art gallery.Coffee bar was nice, made an amazing London Fog pretty quickly.Prices are reasonable.Cons:Homeless people camping out in bathroom. Had to get staff involved. Bathroom was filthy and smelled horrendous. Toothpaste all over the sink, tons of trash including clothing, filthy toilet. If I hadn’t been ready to burst I would have gone elsewhere.Inattentive front counter staff, lack of transparent pricing in some of the art.Flavors taken off coffee menu with no explanation, no signage. Drove all the way out there for a specific drink they make and it was no longer offered.Uneven flooring with no signage or warnings, I have two knees that need replacement and I almost tripped more than once.I would definitely go back, but will be more cautious and use the bathroom elsewhere.
Hey!I spent 2 days working from the coffee shop/bookshop while traveling! I just LOVE the place. The location is really good, the staff is super friendly and helpful, my oat milk cappuccino was the perfect temperature and tasty. The vibe, in general, is positive and open-minded!Please stop by for a coffee or grab-and-go snack.p.s. If you ever consider adding some healthy, no added sugar, and fewer calories sweets, please let me know. I’ll be happy to partner.Good luck 🤍
This was honestly one of the places I was most excited to see when we came to visit Charleston. It did not disappoint! It has a relaxing atmosphere. No one rushed you or looked at you like you needed to leave. We enjoyed exploring the books and art; the coffee smelled amazing! If I lived nearby this would definitely be a local hangout for me. 😁
This was an amazing place and had so much to offer in terms of literature and local arts. Its amazing to have a space like this and I was so refreshed to see this in downtown Charleston. My fiance and I will be moving to West Virginia soon and I know one spot we will be regulars at will be here!
This was the salvation for the historic renovated Charleston city center on a Sunday morning at 1030. Came to this area for a bakery breakfast that was closed on Sunday and Monday, and 80% of the other stores were also closed. But inside this very large bookstore w lots of magazines also was a welcome coffee shop w accomplished barista, baked items and quiche which we enjoyed thoroughly.
We stumbled across this store Sat evening after dinner nearby. We loved the ambiance and quaintness of the place overall. It was very comfortable and inviting. Many people were sitting in the coffee shop side listening to live music too. How many bookstores have that!? Heck many bars/restaurants cant figure that out. They had a surprisingly good selection of books, but also magazines, cards, and even an art gallery area, with items for sale.It was a nice way to close out the evening. Im always happy to see small businesses doing well that have found theyre niche. Congrats and go check this store out.
Love this place! Very cozy and welcoming. I try to visit every time Im in Charleston. Great place to relax with a coffee.
Super cute book store! Love the setup of the place with the books on display and little places to sit and read. My husband and I bought 2 horoscope books at what I consider a good price (less than $20). Would definitely recommend if youre looking for an interesting read. There were so many books I would have loved to buy!
Books, art displays and a cafe. This is one of the best places in town to find something unique or the latest best seller. Best of all you can enjoy your purchase while enjoying the cafes offerings in a warm and comfortable environment. A must for any visitor or tourist of the capital city.
Ordered a coffee to go and they forgot my order & I had to go up and ask where it was. Not apologetic about the mistake and I waited 30 min overall for it. It was not tasty and I ended up throwing it away.Do not recommend.Very eclectic here and not my cup of tea. Was driving thru and will never come here again. They wanted $40 for a stuffed animal, which is outrageous!Surely, better options are available. Hard to find parking too so be prepared if you do go.
Great selection of books, felt extremely cosy, smelled like heaven, had fun art, apparently also a theater, but it was closed when I visited. Highly recommend
Very quaint little place! Were from out of town & went for a walk downtown area (found Pies & Pints also!); stopped in for a cup of coffee, found a book & then relaxed / read for a little bit. Great coffee! Plenty of street parking- jus keep track of your time on the meter, as the parking authority issues parking tickets quickly (we were over by 5ish min ... and one cant pay with cash). If we lived in Charleston - we would certainly patronize this bookstore!
Unique selection of cards and novelty items, well laid out and clean. Nice used book section. Very nice art/potery varieties!
Happened to need to kill some time in Charleston and so I stopped by this bookstore. It was very cute! They have a café (that serves excellent mocha frappuccino/blasts), a little pottery studio, and of course the book store. Loved that it was an independent bookstore and had a great selection of regional books. If you are ever in Charleston, you should check out this place.
This book store was such a gem! The had a perfectly curated selection and lovely atmosphere. Their section on Appalachia was a unique find, and offered some rare and exciting options. Beyond their books, their stationary and art offerings were delightful and complemented their excellent book selection.
This is not only a unique book store its also a well known coffee place that Charlestonians hang out.I would say this is the most popular place for people to visit with friends and have a cuppa. The decor is unique, inviting and a great atmosphere for all individuals. There are many items other than books and coffee at Taylors.Such as baked goods, lunch items, greeting cards and fantastic finger puppets. If your in the Charleston area don’t miss out on this Book and Coffee Haven.
This place is a staple of Charleston. If you havent been, you are missing out. This is a phenomenal art gallery, bookshop and cafe all in one. Great place to shop for gifts or just hang out and enjoy a cup of Joe while soaking in the eclectic atmosphere.
Exceptionally fun place! came here everyday of our vacation to enjoy live music, tasty food and drink, and peruse literature. Helpful, kind, and spirited staff.
Best bookstore in West Virginia. This Independent is an Oasis in a sea of chaos. Wonderful selection, great pastries and drinks, an art house and platform for music and spoken word. A great place to spend an evening
Great local bookstore and coffee shop. We went twice during our most recent weekend visit to Charleston.
This place is a hidden 💎 gem! Though not for the locals, they are very aware of how lucky they are to have it! So many options and something for everyone! Scones, a great cup of coffee, art, and gifts! Its a must to visit!
Love this place. Friendly and perfect small city bookshop.
This spot is worth your time. Good selection of books, a killer coffee shop and a gallery of local pottery and ceramics. Enjoyed browsing, nice vibe.
Small store with a fabulous book selection. They also have a a beautiful selection of WV artisans.. Great coffee and dessert offerings too.
Eclectic collections, great coffee and even greater desserts. Local museum is a must to see.
Of all of the places I love to visit in Charleston, this is my favorite. This is a really cool place to hang out, to discover a new reading passion, just ask the knowledgeable clerks, they know their stuff, or to simply de stress... and let me tell you, the atmosphere WILL de-stress you.To put it simply: Art, books, coffee and community. This place will not leave you wanting.
Hadnt been in there for years. Its a whole lot bigger than I remember. They have a lot of different stuff. Check em out!
Coffee and Books. Love the fish tank
Taylor Books is definitely the best bookstore and café in downtown Charleston, West Virginia. It occupies a large groundfloor space at 226 Capitol Street, and the popular place is divided into three distinct areas: books, café and the art gallery. You can also find and purchase any of numerous gift items, magazines and greeting cards. This bookstore attracts a steady flow of residents, tourists, students and workers from area businesses. On Fridays and Saturdays in the evenings Taylor Books’ theater shows films, downstairs, and several times each month talks and lectures are given. You may order delicious freshly made soups, chili, sandwiches, salads, saumon fumé and various homemade cakes. Beers and domestic wines are also sold. The several seating areas at Taylor Books include a comfortable leather sofa and chair, a curved booth, a few benches and ten small round tables with chairs. There is also a small wooden conference table with several chairs where some people sit while enjoying their food and drinks and using their laptop computer, iPad or telephone. The WiFi is always strong and reliable. You will find people come here daily to eat, enjoy various coffees and teas, and work or relax. If you order coffee in a mug, you can request two or three free refills. Why go to a Starbucks when a Taylor Books is so much better? My brother frequents Taylor Books every other day. He meets and greets his friends and various acquaintances as well as the always-polite, efficient and friendly staff. It is a very popular place downtown and you will meet all sorts of interesting people.Honestly, I do not know what I would have done while visiting Charleston for five weeks without this wonderful place. It is a real treasure. Thank God (and the English owner) for Taylor Books! I do not usually give five stars for my reviews, but Taylor Books really deserves to be rated five stars. It is truly a rare gem.
Great neighborhood bookstore & cafe in downtown Charleston.
A wonderful small bookshop experience. Lots of cozy nooks and seating, eclectic furniture and features, very interesting used books section, kids section has been a big hit with our kids for years, and recently beer wine and pastry items make this a great hangout for those seeking intellectual challenge and company.
Always a stop for us when visiting Charleston. Highly recommend getting a Chia while your there. Dont forget to check out the art side of the shop.
I love stopping by. There’s always something to find!

Love the atmosphere and even when the homeless come in they add to the city seen I remember back in the the day when pubk rock was in and they sat reading enjoying a coffee and a book with 12 inch liberty spikes and bondage pants .love this book store .
My dog enjoyed her first bookstore! It felt cozy exactly how a bookstore should be. The only missed opportunity was they didnt sell dog treats at the cafe but do allow pups in the store.
I had Missed the Bookstore😁
Very nice little bookstore, and their coffee blasts drinks are addicting! So good!!
Great coffee, beer, baked goods and books. 1 of my favorites.
Truly a cornerstone of our community, Taylors offers a wonderful selection of new books, magazines, notebooks, pencils, as well as an expansive used books section. The cafe is always humming and for good reason! Truly my third space in Charleston.
I love the local art work and variety of books available for sale.
This is my all-time favorite bookstore and coffee shop. The staff has always been friendly, the coffee is good, there is always a fun mix of odds and ends for sale, and Ive gotten some great books from their selections. This place is quiet, charming and really nice to be there. Quick and pleasant service with great products, (books and coffee) perfect cocktail. I can stay there for hours.
Super rude to customers kicks them out regularly. flat out unkind to people. i am trying to run a business here ok sir and how does regularly kicking people out help that. everyone else who works here is kinf and the coffee is good. However if this is the owner i dont think i will go back or my family/ friends will
Love this Bookstore
Good selection and fun atmosphere
Cute little book store
Amazing customer service
Best small bookstore in West Virginia. Old books, new books, they have it all.
Cute bookshop with new, used, and super cheap sections. They have a coffee shop that I havent tried but smells amazing. But the really neat thing is the art show that changes out often on one side of the store. Friendly staff.
I love Bagel, Cream Cheese, Lox for an early breakfast. With a Lemon Square and a CRAZY WHITE GIRL, Or Emerald Isle. Their White Hot Cocoas are delicious. Also Milky Way Blast(cold with whipped cream)for a summer afternoon pick me up. And Wildberry Smoothies
Always a good experience. They are utilizing covid measures well.
Cute little coffee and book store right downtown! Had an iced coffee and it was delicious. Will definitely come back here to study.
Friendly faces and affordable coffee. Weekends are a longer wait because theres only one person working though
Ive never been to Taylor Books, though Ive lived 41 of my 45 years in Charleston (I dont like trying to park downtown). Im glad I went though. They have a large selection of books and a little art gallery. I went for their open-mic night and listened to some wonderful poets, storytellers, a musician, and a comic to cap off the evening. Had a lovely time and will definitely be back...when I feel brave enough to face parking downtown again.
Fun place! Great selection of books and the store has a small art gallery in it. Had brunch and did some shopping with a friend and had great time. Really nice vibe and good coffee. They sell wine and cider too so that was also a plus :)
I dont know what I would ever do without Taylor Books. My favorite hangout in Charleston, WV.
God. I love this place. Bring in your own ceramic or travel mug and get the price of your coffee at any size at a small. Good vibes ❣️
Wonderfully charming local book shop and cafe!Taylor Books is an awesome spot to grab a coffee, tea, beer or wine (depending on the tone of day) and peruse their varied selection of critically acclaimed authors and titles as well as many publications by local authors or about WV related topics. Many evenings youll find live (mostly acoustic) music in the cafe, which is always a treat. When you stop in, dont forget to check out the art gallery connected to the book store on the opposite side of the cafe! It showcases many of the areas best local artists.
What a fun find on our way home from Massachusetts to Texas. This is a combination coffee house, book store and an art gallery. The staff was friendly and helpful. We enjoyed looking at all the different books (both new and used) throughout the store. One employee had a Texas connection (he was wearing a Texas State sweatshirt) which made for fun conversation. If you are looking for a fun place to visit, this is the place.
Great combo book store/ coffee shop/ art studio. Book selection is good they can order you anything just have patience. Some really nice pottery that is made by local artists and also wooden items too. They have nice mixed media paintings and other art pieces you can buy. Located in a nice older part of town. The coffee shop had alot of comfy seating. The coffee was well done and the vegetable quiche was nice. A good place to go for Sunday lazy day. Parking is not easy so you might have to walk a bit. Great place definitely go here.
Great place to stop by and have a coffee, beer or whatever. They also have great cakes and pies. The art gallery and theater are cool. Oh yeah, books
I use the Cafe mostly and the food and coffee is awesome. I really enjoy talking to the baristas, and if you bring your own Coffee Thermos or Mug they will fill it for the price of a small :) I would recommend any of their daily soups, and my favorite scone is the cheese and dill. This is a great little shop. Charleston wouldnt be the same without them.
Lovely book shop! A little coffee shop makes it the perfect place to spend a rainy afternoon! Places like this are getting rare, so i love to support them whenever i can!
I love a good bookstore. This place always has a wonderful selection. But my favorite parts are the coffee shop and the art. The coffee shop has delightful beverages and pastries. And the art on display is incredibly unique and most of it is reasonably priced. This is a stop we always make when in Charleston.
