I love Grit but I dread coming to this branch because of how busy it can get during the weekends. At one point it was a 30 minute wait for a latte because there was only one barista. This seems to be a common complaint at this store. The staff is also aloof and it doesnt make for an overall great experience.

First time here. What a great start to my morning! Just found out we have one at home in Richmond. My first stop in the morning. Great location on the mall, great customer service, AND the coffee is exceptional! Great breakfast and lunch options .

Food, coffee, and service are consistently good! Love the pastries and they are very accommodating if you bring your own cup. It tends to get busy around 10am for brunch, but before that time Ive rarely had to wait.

Had top notch drip coffee with 3 different brews to try. Enjoyed their Costa Rican brew the best. Breakfast burrito with sausage was delicious and had a great salsa on top

Food was great! Service was amazing and friendly by one employee but not the other by any means. The sign on the door says they stay open until 5 p.m. but I went to grab something else to eat at 4:24 p.m. and the door was locked. I then went outside to see the unfriendly employee smoking a cigarette and had locked the door to Grit while she took a break...smh...get rid of the bad apple G.R.I.T. We love you

The coffee and food are really good, but the chai latte could have used a little more chai. The spices on the chai latte were really good though.

Top notch coffee and breakfast. They have the good sense to make their mochas with cocoa powder instead of syrup.

The chorizo hash with egg is delicious and big....big enough for 2! The breakfast burrito with hash is delish...good enough to share or to fill you up for tge whole day. My chai coffee was excellent! Will be back for sure. Great service and amazing staff.

Almond Milk Latte. Great tasting coffee! Their food options looked good too but I only had the coffee during this visit.

I used to come here a lot when this place was still Café Cubano. The menu has undergone a lot of changes since then. They still have the same coffee which is good enough and baked goods from the Albemarle bakery which are excellent.The sides are huge portions, and all the portions are pretty generous in general.The barristas are really nice and friendly.Something that really bothered me is finding not just a piece but pieces of eggshell in my side of scrambled eggs recently. It was so gross I couldnt enjoy the rest of my food and felt nauseous all morning :(

The Grad - this is the best bowl of grits in town. Service is fantastic, my first time and they decide what was good and they made a perfect suggestion. Absolutely love this place!

The grit bowls are amazing! And the cappuccinos are made to perfections with lots of light smooth foam on top.

This place served the BEST breakfast Ive had in ages, but for sure in 2020! The chorizo hash and the grits were superb! The hot chocolate and pumpkin mocha were delicious and the Belgian waffle was so buttery and fluffy it melted in our mouths. To top all of that off, the customer service was golden. We will be coming back to Grit Coffee whenever were in Charlottesville!

Super friendly staff, delicious lattes, and great little biscuit sandwiches! They have outdoor seating that is very dog friendly, and last time I was there with my pup they came out to refill the water bowl as soon as they saw him! It was really sweet that I didn’t even have to ask. Their seasonal lattes are absolutely top notch

Doesn’t allow use of its restroom by paying customers - disappointing, especially given the lack of public restrooms on the Downtown Mall. I didn’t order anything and instead found a shop that allows restroom use.

Best coffee and breakfast on the mall! Their grit bowls & breakfast burrito put me in a state of zen, I always grab brunch here when Im feeling down and it brightens my day! Workdays I notice theyre sometimes short-staffed, so be prepared with a wait sometimes, calling ahead and ordering to-go works great here, though. Excellent shop to meet up at, definitely a local favorite!

Ive been here for breakfast a couple times. Fast and friendly service. My over easy eggs were cooked perfectly. Good bread options, and tasty preserves. The atmosphere is nice and has a down to Earth vibeId definitely recommend this place for a quick breakfast. My only suggestion is to make sure that the potatoes are completely cooked.

Coffee isnt bad, service wasnt that great honestly. Their hours are super weird and not conducive to a normal schedule. I went there hoping to study and was not asked if I wanted it for there. They threw (literally threw) my croissant in a bag and handed it to me and gave me the coffee in a to go cup. After sitting down, I was approached and asked why I was sitting if I got my order to go and told that I should let others use the table. Excuse me? I wasnt offered it for here and when I tried to correct that, no one would listen. Yeah, not going back here unless I have to. They only have 2 stars because the coffee itself was pretty good.

They were really friendly, but pretty stingy with the quantity. I got a small piece of bacon and one piece of toast with my meal. Food was just alright. The coffee quality match other reviews. Not quite the diner or coffee house quality I was hoping for.

Eat there for breakfast at least once a week - Varied menu, friendly staff, good coffee. Hunter and Anna are fantastic, as well as the crew in the kitchen. Might have the best biscuits & gravy in Charlottesville...

I don’t take the time to write reviews, in fact, this is my first review on any medium. I ordered here for the first time today and it will certainly be the last. This isn’t even about the food (which is okay at best. But this is typical of Charlottesville food anyway.) or the fact that I got my food late (they were backed up, understandable, and one of the employees took the time to explain and apologize, she’s great!) or the fact that my order came out wrong. But after finally getting my order right, the guy who gave me my food slid the plate to me and didn’t say a word, as if I inconvenienced him (who didn’t even cook or remake the food) for requesting that my order be correct. He also didn’t give me silverware (another employee said he was supposed to) and I had to get in line and go out of my way to ask for some, because you know, I had to eat the food. He just exhibited poor customer service overall. I wouldn’t say avoid the place, I’m sure this incident is isolated, and the other employees are great, but it’s unacceptable for ANY employee to treat certain (paying!) customers however they want.

All of my experiences with Grit downtown have been overwhelmingly positive: the staff are friendly and knowledgeable, the food is reasonably priced and portioned and tastes great, and the coffee is fantastic. Grit is one of the few places that serves tasty decaf, and their espressos are perfectly balanced.Theres a variety of seating inside the store (inside, outside, tables, standing tables) with the choice to have a place to people watch or have a private spot in the back. They offer actual cups of water and metal silverware, and you can have your coffee in a mug inside the store (which is great for cutting down unnecessary waste).The only complaint I have is that the music is often loud and can be strange for the atmosphere (Metallica at 8am?), but Im sure you could mention it to staff and theyd do something about it.

The service was poor to say the least. They forgot my order and didnt do anything to make amends. The refund was less than the cost of the meal. Rest assured, I am telling everyone I know

Great coffee, nice and strong lattes without the burnt taste like the usual Starbucks garbage. Excellent for breakfast, the omelette is awesome and I highly recommend the homemade biscuits! I skipped lunch after the hardy meal I had this morning.

So far Ive visited twice and I wish I could say I loved it. The grit bowl was pretty good - Ill be back to try that again. But my Cuban sandwich today was barely even heated through and my simple request for no mayo was ignored. For the price Id at least hope for hot food. Ill give it one more try!

Excellent coffee! Nice atmosphere. Got some work done quietly, over a flat white, while waiting for a friend. If you are visiting as I was, this is a nice stop when you need your coffee!

Great food, good prices (which include the 10.3% taxes on the sticker price), great location, hours could extend later. Local artists present their works on the walls. Great business!

The tip should be applied AFTER dining. Tables were a mess, potatoes were under cooked and when requested “cooked” potatoes had to wait for every new order to be filled before coming back to ours.I want my tip back!

Easily never coming back for the rest of my life. If you dont know that my drink is correct then dont give it to me expecting me not to notice. Honestly dont know what I expected all the employees were clearly too high to function

Spacious inside. The breakfast burrito w/ avocado was fantastic, potatos were adequate, bowl of fruit was a generous amount, and the cafe con leche was on point. On the downtown main strip, its a wonderful breakfast option for sure.

The veggie burger was delicious and portion size very generous. Interior design also aesthetically pleasing. Will definitely be back for more!

Great coffee and fast breakfast. Grit has generous portions and goes beyond the standard fare by including items with salsa and tortillas. One of our go to places in regular rotation.

The food at Grit cafe is great but as of today i wont be going back went in to get my breakfast and was totally ignored me like i wasnt there i send buisness there all the time from the hotel im employed at but wont be sending customers there anymore..

Not only was the coffee great but I was able to get some work finished without feeling like I was taking up space. And I highly recommend the Avocado Toast with egg.

The first time I had espresso it was really good thanks to the bartender who made it really good. The second time it was bad and the third time I got a latte and a croissant and the butter croissant was more than 3$. It’s ridicoulus price and it was my bad for not checking the price but I couldn’t expect it. They won’t see me ever again. Bye

Great place to hang out and get some work done over a good espresso drink and a bowl of grits. Highlights include the Graduate bowl, Avocado Toast, and the flat white. Great location right in the downtown mall of Charlottesville.

Fell short somewhere between self service and having wait staff, which led to us waiting a long time but still ordering at a counter repeatedly... food was tasty, but so is most of the food on the mall, so it doesnt really stand out.
