Love this store. The cheese, tea and food selection downstairs are fantastic. And the upper floors with their various Michigan made products and metal sculptures include so many unique items perfect for gifts or home decor. They also have one of the oldest working elevators in Detroit (though it’s staff only, so don’t try to use it!). Megan, Karen and the rest of the staff are also a pleasure to regularly see and get help from. Just keep in mind while shopping here- their cheeses aren’t all out on display like in many delis. They are in the cooler behind the counter, but the staff is more than happy to explain all of the options they have that day and let you see or sample anything you’re interested in. I’m very much a visual shopper so this was something I was surprised by, but it makes sense when they go through various unique types so often. If you’re already in the area, highly recommend walking around and browsing all of the murals nearby. They change about every one or two years and are always incredibly done.
Great store, loved the variety of products. I bought peach ginger beer( a flavored ginger drink) not actually alcohol, it was delicious. There is something for everyone here.
This place has three floors with the first floor having a lot of different teas and coffees that you dont normally see in stores has a lot of food items that you dont normally see along with two other floors with various gift items and stuff unique to Detroit in Michigan. If youre in the Eastern market I recommend stopping by.
Visit this place for original Detroit made and Michigan made flavor: Mackinaw Island fudge, Better made licorice, and old school Faygo pops made with real sugar just to name a few. They have the BEST selection of coffee and tea out of every where I have visited in Michigan. Please continue to support this Detroit staple!!!
DeVries & Co. is a century-old Detroit mainstay for cheese, wine, dry goods, local ingredients, home decor, and plenty more! Stop in to finish up your grocery list after strolling through Eastern Market. Don’t forget to check out the second and third floors for plenty of seasonal items and Detroit-themed gifts and items.
First time there it has a really nice variety of items for sale. Everything is affordable i will definitely be going back. Everyone who works there is nice and helpful. Really great selection of teas and cheeses.
Amazing place. So much cool stuff. Love the old working elevator. They have 3 floors
Awesome place the owner is the best. If you like cheese you need to go
Love this place. High quality merchandise. Friendly, knowledgeable employees. The only bummer is the prices are slightly high.
Great cheese selection. I like the place overall. I just wish they would slice meats for you.
My family went there on Satuedays for over 60 years (used 2 be A. Hirtz (sp?) Their service is steady, cheeses still good.
Fabulous family-owned treasure trove of a store. Lower level has fine cheeses with a great knowledgeable staff to help you choose the best one for you. Shelfs filled with imported foods that sound tantalzing and taste even better. Second floor is eclectic mix of outdoor gardening decorations and handmade jewelry. Third floor is chock full of kitchen gadgets and Detroit themed merchandise.
The selection of food on the first floor is amazing but the retail on the second floor is astounding
If you are looking for it you will find it here.
Great Detroit fixture. Amazing cheese counter. Great gift and restored antique stuff. Garden orn
Love Devries. Can never leave empty handed.
Im definitely be going back.
Traditionally, DeVries was a cheese shop in Detroits Eastern Market. They still sell cheese - but, theyve added all sorts of other food stuffs on the first floor.Theyve also turned their 2nd and 3rd floors into an antiques and sundries store with an awful lot of cool stuff. Can describe it beyond that - but, you should check it out. We have to measure a space in our house to be sure a very cool storage device will fit. If it does, were buying it.
Great staff, lots of little knickknacks and unique items along with the cheeses and meats that has been their mainstay. Always fun to browse!
Absolutely love this store! Make sure you go up to the 3rd floor on the oldest working freight elevator in Detroit and work your way down. Theres hidden gems around every corner.
Very interesting three story collection of all kinds of food stuffs and home decorative and useful items.
Unique products. Michigan made, variety of different foods.
Such awesome manchego....and the bacon jam. Yummy.
Fantastic cheese market. Great selection. Shot my budget, but was well worth it !
They have the most knowledgeable cheese staff. Its wonderful to go ave a place that you can enjoy so much variety.
Wonderful store filled with the most amazing things... 3 floors worth of beautiful jewelry, Detroit swag, planters.. Anything you can think of ♥
Great variety of cheeses and cured meats. Knowledgeable staff. their groceries section is worth checking out, too.
Devries is the only place to go for specialty foods, especially cheese! The selection is extensive and the staff is very knowledgeable. If you looking for something that puts Kraft to shame, stop in and explore the amazing options at Devries!
Absolutely love shopping here the cheese is fresh and delightful.
I go here every year to get a special cheese that I like they wait on you very quickly they move the line and its a clean store this store is great for specialties and cheese or out of the way goodies
A great selection of items and everyone is very friendly
Great selection of cheese, and super friendly salespeople.
Just look this meat and cheese shop !!Love the wood floors, love the shops on level two and three. Just a great place!!!
Love going here to get my cheese fix.
I visited before Christmas I was surprised they had 3 floors of great shopping... plus the have this original old freight wooden elevator that still works, with a employee working controls, but you can always use the stairs... the cheeses and jams, jellies and breads I sampled was different and some i liked and some I didnt... they have too much to try and list ...
Always love shopping here. Unique gifts and prices are reasonable. Friendly service
Great products and great people
Always find some good eats to take home.
Fun place to browse. I always find something new to buy when I go there.
I love this place they have a variety of everything is three floors in there so people go check them out have fun shopping
Love this place! They have very cool stuff!
I give this place a 3 stars, and only because of the interesting stuff they have. I do not recommend the cheese selection here, when I visited (on a hot summer day) they had cuts of cheese wrapped on the counter. When you touched them they felt rather warm like they had been out for awhile. Or that it was to hot in the store.Regardless, not something i would purchase from here.
My go to cheese shop. So many different types of cheeses, for every kind of occasion!
Very cool place have a lot of unique things
Cool place to poke into when at the market. Have some good stuff to check out. If your lucky enough to catch musicians upstairs its amazing! Have heard some great music there. Also had a chat with a very talented painter that rents out a spot up there
I love the wide variety of cheeses and selection of so many unique items you can’t find anywhere. It’s just so expensive!
Yhey always have great products and they keep everything safe and moving!
Great selection good prices worth the trip
I abso-luv this place. deliciously diverse cheese selection and friendly knowledgeable staff.😁
The cheese selection is where this place shines. On a Saturday you can expect the store to be somewhat crowded due to the Farmers Market, but it still has a wonderful selection.Theres also various other sundries and the like, and a few odd biscuits and such. But for me, the largest draw was always getting a few differing cheeses to take me through the week.
Best in state for cheese and pate just to start with. Cholesterol City! Have to keep the high blood in the family.
Wonderful store, excellent customer service. The staff is friendly and helpful. Great owner. Best variety of cheeses, food, and novelty items. The 2nd and 3rd floor are must see.
Excellent place. Best cheese and selection anywhere. A MUST visit when at the Eastern Market.
Love that old time country store feel to it. Their cheese and condiment selections are awesome and I like the candies from around the world. I especially like the promotion of Detroit/Michigan made products.
Danielle, Amy and Howard make this the best place and my first stop at the market every Saturday. Danielle/Amy always friendly, fun and so helpful! They know the cheeses and make great suggestions. Howard is simply the best if you want to know anything about coffee and tea!!!
One of my favorite places in the world! In case you have never been there: this magical spot has three floors and an antique elevator. There are incredible music and art studios up there open to the public every Saturday!
Ive lost my trust in this place as a good cheese source. Ive had this brand of camembert cheese before and never saw it so gray and fuzzy with mold. Its a stinky soft cheese, but this was especially rancid. When I took it back the cashier didnt open it, couldnt make out what the expiration date said and made it seem like I didnt know spoiled cheese from fresh cheese. Otherwise, this place has other nice things worth getting, just iffy service
Great cheese selection
This place is extremely interesting and full of unique food, Detroit swag, and local farm products. Great and historic building and amazing selection of cheese.
Great place to find many different types of cheeses..you can sample the cheese.Employees are very helpful...Alot of Michigan made things...Also has an up stairs where you can shop for fun whimsical things....
Really cool place. They have 3 floors, where they sell all kinds of different things.like an old style department store. They have over 200 kinds of cheese in stock. And sell almost every Detroit made food product.
If you want to go to a place that has items that you knew as a child and other things you have to go to Devries and please visit the 3rd floor youll love this place. I like the packs of the different kinds of coffee to make my own special brand and the real butter and milk in the glass bottle like from the twin pines trucks. Youve got to go and check this place out.
We had a great experience here today. We wanted to get some cheeses and the woman found some that matched what we wanted. We got to sample them and ended up buying 4 different kinds. I ended up taking a copy of their master list of 250 cheeses they carry home with me so I can keep track of the ones Ive tried because I definitely plan on coming back for more.
Absolutely love this store! So much cheese and local goodies!
Great Place.. should really check it out when you are at the Eastern Market
Is genuinely one of the best establishments in Wayne county. The shelves are filled with eclectic sauces and spices covering a spectrum of cuisines. Fresh breads from local bakeries, and dairy from Caulders Dairy Farm. Walk in and grab an excellent cup of coffee to sip while you peruse, head up stairs and take a peek at all sorts of home decor. But the true gem of this shop, the piece de resistance, is the counter, the cheese counter that is. Be guided by knowledgeable staff and make sure to ask for samples, this locale is definitely a try before you buy type of place. Cheeses from all over the world. The staff is extremely friendly and helpful. The owner,Dave, is a delight, you can often find him ringing customers out at the registers. Though it may run a tad on the expensive side the quality of the product and the service with a smile makes it well worth it. The Devries family has been serving the Detroit area since 1887 one can only hope they will still be doing so in another 125 years. Cheers!
Best specialty shop in Eastern Market. Great selection of cheeses that are available. The employees are all wonderful & knowledgeable...
We love DeVries. They have the best of everything including Michigan Mitt Maps! :)
Fantastic cheese counter. The rest of the store is cute but the real action is at the counter. Fantastic selections from the U.S. and all over the world. Pick up a menu and ask to sample various cheeses, pâtés, and dried meats. I dare you to stay within budget. But try to avoid Saturdays when you will be fighting the Eastern Market stall crowds. When youre done, head over to Cost Plus and select a bottle of wine to go with your cheese.
A must-visit when youre in Eastern Market the best cheese in the state
My favorite store to visit at the Eastern Market. While they dont sell much produce, you will find plenty of quality food items, teas, kitchen gadgets, drinks, and gifts. They carry a large selection of cheeses and cured meats, which is the only store of this kind in the area. Ask for a category of cheese and throw your friends a cheese tasting party. Also, get the Marlenka layered honey cakes (you will want to go back just for that!)
Don’t forget to check out floors 2 and 3! There is much more to the store than delicious cheeses and foods! ❤️
Such a fabulous place to bring the family to experience history in the making. Cheese, meat, specialty gourmet foods. Fun for all ages, dont forget to check out the third floor. They have housewares, toys, Nick Nacks, gifts and wow do they have Baskets. They have everything for you to make your own special occasion baskets. Its a must see. They are open Tuesday- Saturday. Saturday East5 Market is a great feast for all and this 126 year old shop ran by the founder grandson is a must see.
Fantastic experience for my husband and oldest child! One of the employees gave us an elevator ride with a totoral on the history of the elevator and building! ♥️
This place has over 200 types of cheese from all over the world. They also have a great selection of specialty grocery. They also have a great gift selection upstairs. This is a really wonderful place.
I went here to buy cheese with mango in it and found out there is alot more for the eye at this store. It is 3 levels and wonderful. They have a Michigan section where I found delicious Michigan cherries. If youre in Eastern Market make sure you stop in here.
If you are entertaining guests and want some fun and delicious meats, cheeses and snacks, you must stop here! I love this little market, especially since they carry a ton of Michigan made products.
Excellent. People were helpful and friendly on this last Saturday before Christmas. I got what I wanted (and more)! I should have come here sooner 😊
Best place for cheese lovers & so much more, love this place
Loved it great experience bought a couple things there for my house and I live about a hundred miles away highly recommended on a visit to Detroit!
I love their selection of cheeses and the unique gifts upstairs
Fantastic selection of cheeses, make sure to ask for the list. Also 3 floors of various food, home, and gift items. Ride the elevator for a fun experience in what is called the oldest elevator in Detroit.
Beautiful
This is the most awesome place to get cheese from all over the world still able to get milk in glass bottles different kinds of pop in glass bottles things you think you cant find anymore Family owned business they are so friendly and helpful they go out of their way to make your shopping experience unique Located downtown Detroit in Eastern Market a very Historical place
Had the exact cheese I was looking for, friendly fast clerks.
My favorite cheese store in Detroit. Dont miss out. Try international cheeses!
Amazing assortment of cheese, plus a wonderful little bakery and the second and third floors have Detroit merchandise and kitchen gadgets. Love to explore the
One of the best stores in Detroit. They have a big selection of specialty products and gourmet food items. Must visit when you are going to Eastern Market in Detroit
Could have spent another hour browsing all of the unusual foods & gifts but had another commitment. Wonderful selection of cheeses.
A great place to get made in Detroit products. Owners are awesome!
Meat isle is too narrow, people always bumping into each other
