Did I not already post a review? I thought I did. Oh maybe I just posted about them on Instagram! Very possible! So, Ive been trying to make it here after work for a bit, but Ive been super busy. I finally got a chance to go and loved the layout and the building and most of all the books. There are so many different kinds, just treasures all over the place. I didnt look long bc I was on a mission for tiny books and with a point in the right direction from the lovely lady up front, I found several that fit my friends needs. I WILL be bringing my book lover boyfriend back next time!
One of the most comfortable and browsable bookstores on the east coast, with a great selection and creatively curated displays. Its probably not the first place I would go looking for a specific title and they dont do textbooks and such, but it is a place full of hidden treasures, old favorites, and curious volumes of forgotten lore. It is, without a doubt, my favorite stop on any casual stroll down Caroline Street.
I reside in Melbourne, Australia and last week I made a purchase of a signed book from Riverby Books. I had requested to see photos of the book the day before I purchased it and Lindley there promptly emailed me the photos and a description of the books condition to reassure me that all of the original inserts were present. This made my decision to purchase an easy one. On the day of the purchase I was dealing with Cameron there who was extremely helpful in taking my order, organising the payment process all the way through to packing and shipment of my order. I received the package today which was very quick and it was well packaged...the book inside is in immaculate condition...couldnt be happier. Thank you Riverby Books (Lindley & Cameron).
Used to work a few blocks down the road and loved visiting Riverby during my lunch break! Really great atmosphere, lots of genres and book options on all levels, and really friendly staff.
Awesome shop, theres more than you can dive into in one trip. The high traffic areas are delightfully curated. Very reasonable prices.
I used to live near Fredericksburg and this store was one of my absolute favorite places to visit. There was just something almost magical about it. Loved that there were chairs and other sitting areas and no one minded if you picked up a book and just sat a while. Theres nothing like it where I am now, but maybe one day... Hope to visit again some time.
Great little book shop. Some new books, some used books, and some rare connections. The staff is really nice, and very helpful. Located in downtown Fredericksburg, on a great street. Lots of fun stores, and not far from the parking garage! I highly recommend a visit, and taking some time to look around.
Really nice place! I’m disappointed that it’s getting a couple bad reviews as of recent, it’s really an awesome store. Huge selection of books, people working there were extremely nice when I asked if they had any books on a certain subject when I came in a couple months ago; wanted to help. With COVID-19 & current situations a lot of people are going through, I hoped more people would be understanding :( I appreciate that they do still sell online and curbside! Thanks for trying to keep your customers and everyone safe :)
Quintessential Book store experience, complete with window seats and soft music
Great selection of different types of books. I just wanted cheaper books.
Great 2 story used bookstore with a vast collection of all topics you can imagine. If you think of a cool grandperson who had all the hobbies you could have over 150 years and made a library out of it, this is the place
Very cute place with friendly, helpful staff. Looking for something? Just ask!
5 stars!!! My favorite used book store Ive ever been too with incredible prices.
Fantastic book store with the best selection, you’ll never know what you will walk out with
An amazing place to buy books and a wonderful atmosphere
Great and interesting selection of books, friendly staff, just a comfortable place
Staff is welcoming and the selections should keep you interested
Great to see The old Bookstore type of place still exists and especially in a historically significant setting like Fredericksberg, Va. You just feel an invitation to slow down, sit down, tune out and browse. You rediscover the importance of Book Jacket covers in grabbing your attention and the roam of your eyes over shelves and the feel of actual books, the weight of the paper, the feel of the binding material....the difference between acknowledging an emoji and actually shaking a hand...you just have to buy something so you can walk out with paper bag, not plastic, with a Bookstore Logo that makes you feel smarter (even if it contains a first edition compilation of Peanuts cartoons)..Enjoy!!
Ive really enjoyed coming to this bookstore when Im in Fredericksburg. However, I dropped a box of books off in November, and apparently theyve been lost. Its been almost 2 weeks since I last heard anything, and that was basically me reaching out to ask if I should just give up on getting any money for my books. If I wanted to donate them, I would have donated them to my local library. Very disappointing.
I went their to sell first edition books . It went well.
I love used book stores in historic locations. Local business, great pricing, friendly staff, cool building, cozy space, well organized, and full of books I didnt know I wanted to read. Spent a bunch of time in there and got a stack of great books for very little $.Will definitely visit again and continue to gush to anyone that likes books about how awesome this store is. Loved it!
I was pretty disappointed. The atmosphere is cute, but so many of their books are old and kind of gross. There was a whole series I was looking for, and all the books were there, but they had pizza grease stains (or something) all over the front and back covers. So gross. So, I didnt buy. Wish theyd be more discerning over the quality they accept. I didnt feel comfortable shopping and touching their products.
Love this place. I hope it always stays open, there is just something about the smell of old books. They are very nice and helpful here. Even my kids like to look around all of the books they have to offer. If you like old book stores, this is the place for you.
What a great place to get books for my kids! It is an inexpensive place to locally buy used books. They had such a great verity to choose from, had everything we needed! When back in town Ill be visiting them again for sure!
Just a good place to get books
Love, love, LOVE this bookstore. The atmosphere is something that just takes you out of the hectic world and into bookworm world. The old staircases, the window seat, the old books. Its amazing. Sometimes I visit there just to be there and not even purchase a book. But when I do I love the amazing cheap prices.
Great bookstore with books at a great price! Their merch (t-shirts, hats, etc.) is also pretty cool. I didnt purchase it, but the best writing pencil Ive ever encountered is just in front of the checkout desk!
Beautiful store!
This gem is indescribable; I could spend my whole day here. Huge selection of used books in mint condition - be careful, those hardbacks add up ($10 for hardbacks, $5 for paperbacks - typically)! The upstairs has a window lounge area if you want to read prior to purchasing. Im in love! 😍
Best book store I have found in a LONG time. Amazing quantity and quality of books, and the staff is simply brilliant.10/10, will spend many more hours and dollars shopping here!
Great little local book shops. Cozy and has so many books! Just wish it had more locations. Need more book stores like this in the world and across the country. People would love reading again!
This bookshop is a gem in Downtown Fredericksburg. There are three floors on which to peruse books, with chairs and sofas to sit on to enjoy reading the books. The different genres are clearly labelled. Sets of books with a similar theme are put together with ribbon to be bought together. Outside on the sidewalk is a book case with books for $1! My sister in law bought a book from the bookcase of walks and bicycle routes in the Acadia National Park in Maine. A perfect gift. The staff are friendly but non intrusive; allowing customers to browse at leisure. Historic posters, paintings, prints, and baseball caps and tote bags with Riverby Books on them are also for sale. I would thoroughly recommend a visit to this bookshop.
Well organised bookstore. Separate Civil War section with many titles all at very reasonable prices - definitely worth a visit. Staff are also very helpful.
Always a favorite place. Charming shop, great selection of used books. History, special displays, and rare books on the main floor. Fiction, poetry, and biographies upstairs; childrens and crafts/arts downstairs. A few comfy chairs. Browse for hours!
More books available in a bunch of different genres. A lot of US history related books, too. You could easily spend more than an hour inside finding all the books you have wanted to read for great prices.
There are bookstores that sell books. Then there is Riverby, a bookstore that encourages reading. Comfortable seating throughout the stores welcomes longer visits, with a friendly and informative staff to match. I will be recommending any and all of my book reading friends to visit this place. This is the small city version of Powells City of Books in Portland, minus the crowds and higher prices. I look forward to visiting again!
I love this place. One of the best things about moving closer to Fredericksburg. As a lifelong reader, this is one of the best used book stores in Virginia. Look for all the clever signage and decorations, and come prepared to spend more time here than maybe you planned once you get caught up browsing. I love to perch in a window seat upstairs and read for a bit before I buy. Always an interesting selection and fair prices.
Its a decent store but its far too political. With how divided everyone is, why stir the pot? Lets keep our town happy.
Books make me happy. Old books make me happy. Reasonably priced used books make me happy!
Well organized, fun. Always something interesting and a whiteboard with amusing writing in the window.
This a awesome book store. It has a diverse interesting book selection for all. There are lots of comfortable places to snuggle with a book. Overall this bookstores is one of the best.
Excellent book store they have the most extensive historical section in the area with particular attention paid to US history. The prices are beyond reasonable almost every book is either 5 or 10 dollars. The staff is extremely helpful and seems to be aware if not versed in any genre of literature.
Love this place. It has a huge personality and large selection, plus they usually have really good music playing
Always come here whenever Im in Fredericksburg. Sprawling selection of books in a historic old building and great prices. One of my favorite book stores.
Their collection is always amazing and managing to find Franklin Library bound books always brightens my day.
Great place. Affordable, but the selection is so good you spend plenty of money anyway.
This book store has antique books and books on every subject. I easily spend over an hour simply browsing the ever-changing and wide selection every time I walk inside. With decent prices and truly something for everyone, its always worth a visit.
First things first, remember there are books upstairs and down stairs and all around stairs. In short many folks miss the huge selection. I find a lot of great gems for cooking, and history and occasionally old pulp sci fi.
A small bookstore with a very large used book collection, with volumes ranging upwards from the 1700s. Spending a few hours here just browsing the collection is a must. There is also plenty of seating throughout the store (and its never too crowded), making it a great place to pick up a book and read. The employees are also super nice and super helpful. There is also usually a $1 bookshelf outside the store which is always worth a look.
Neighborhood used bookstore with diverse selection of mint condition used books. Plan to stay awhile there are plenty of chairs. Great staff.
Love this store! So many cool books. Such a great selection of hard to find books. Such good deals too. I go anytime Im downtown.
Very cool place. Excellent selection of books. I try to but one every time I visit.
The best laid out used bookstore I have ever visited. Three floors of books, nicely decorated, and very helpful staff. The candy vault game is a nice touch too.
Cute and unique bookstore downtown FXBG. Friendly staff and interesting finds for books. They also accept donations and a resell option at their bookstore. I recommend calling ahead to make sure theyll accept your books.
Great shop. My wife and I found some out of print books wed been looking for. Staff was very polite and helpful. Well definitely be back.
Drove two hours out of my way to visit this place during their posted business hours. Turns out, these jerks decided to close “awhile” without bothering to change their hours. I will never return.
Pretty substantial selection, almost every book is $10 which is great when you find rare books that would normally run you $50. Cozy atmosphere, friendly staff, and there are also a few neat knick knacks here and there. One of my favorites
Great bookstore. Allow yourself time to browse.
Our favorite used book store in Fredericksburg. And its located down in the historic district. Makes for a nice stop when taking a stroll in old town.
Probably my favorite bookstore ever. I always find something each visit. Staff is friendly and helpful. It also stocks books on local history and some local book art souvenirs.
A nicer bookstore cant be found, nice place to both browse and order from and even managed on occasion to get books in near mint condition from less then 5 years from publishing date for $1
A great place for men to wait while the ladies shop
Awesome! They have an amazing selection of books and the people there are very welcoming.
One of the highlights of downtown FXburg
Love this book store. The selection is vast and esoteric at times, though on the whole you can find most things authors you seek. Their fiction section is well stocked all the time and is constantly added to as far as I can tell. The books are affordable, though some can be a little pricey and their science fiction section is a little smaller than what Im used to, but thats ok the store is still fantastic as a whole! All the sections are also meticulously organized which is amazing for a used book store! The atmosphere is generally calm with a lot of places to plop down and read whatever you find among the shelves. The basement is also full of childrens books at very affordable price points so thats also a massive plus!!! This store is bar none my favorite place to kill time in when Im in Fredericksburg and Im more than happy to support them whenever I can!!!!!
I love their selection and all the old books
I love visiting this little bookstore!
We love this place. Don’t forget to ask about the scavenger hunt.
Great selection of gently used books. With three levels of topics, I can always find something pertaining to my interests.
Fantastic selection staff and atmosphere
Great selection of used books, some antiques.
One of my favorite spots in Downtown Fredericksburg.
Nice little used bookstore with a Friendly staff and pretty good selection. Highly reccomend.
It is a nice place to relax and get a book. I put a review in the past that was not as complimentary. I am changing that because I found that they are trying to service our community by providing a great downtown bookstore. Yes, it is true that they may not be the fastest in getting the book you ordered but there are so many benefits this bookstore offers. Great collections of books and relaxed atmosphere. People are willing to help. So we like Riverby books! Thank you for being in Fredericksburg!
My daughters and I absolutely love this place! Great atmosphere and great prices
Easily my favorite bookstore downtown, excellent selection of used books, fun layout. Highly recommend this store!
Love it! Fun selection and friendly service
This book store is laid back and quaint. Plenty of places to sit and read. Lots of history sitting around you inside and outside the store.
Friendly staff, and the maze like chaos unravels like a good book...never know what youll find next! They also buy used books, so you can sell for cash or double the store credit!
This bookstore is actually closed at the moment despite google saying it’s open, just a heads up for anyone looking to stop by here!
I love Riverby. Its a great place to sit and read on a rainy day.
Truly incredible and cozy place to buy used books!
This is such a fun local 2nd hand bookstore. The selection is excellent and if youre so inclined you can even play a round of disc golf (mini).
Shannon was very helpful to my mom who is in a wheelchair, she gathered a lot of books that my mom was searching for, very accommodating place.
Building and interior haave great character
Awesome people, great selection for all age group.
Great prices, comfortable chairs to evaluate prospective purchases, gift cards, friendly staff, and inventory that is refreshed often.
Love this book store. Fun place to bring the kids. Fair prices.
Some wonderful browsing. But not a lot of turnover in stock. Youve got to be patient & pick over the shelves. Dont think Ive ever left empty-handed. But then Im ill. Addicted.
Great place to find gently read, used books at very reasonable prices.
