Watusi is a great little restaurant/cafe with both indoor and outdoor seating in Hilton Head. The location isnt amazing, but the lovely outdoor patio surrounded by plants and trees makes up for it. Food was very good, as was the service. The homemade pancakes with fresh berries were delicious. The corned beef has was surprisingly light and had a refreshing twist with the fennel. Omelet was basic, but ok. They also have a bakery, but we did not try anything from there. They also serve matcha green tea which is a nice addition to a brunch menu. The only critique, other than the so-so omelet, was that they serve fake maple syrup with their breakfast items. You have to pay $2.50 more for real maple syrup. For a place that seems to pride itself on good, fresh ingredients, that is a no-no.
Friendly wait staff, clean tables and menus, family friendly. Food was awesome dont miss the coffee not coffee section on back of the menu for some out of this world fresh smoothies. The nice thing is there is a coffee bar where you can order something while you wait then just chill on the patio until a table is ready. Will be back, great experience.
Such a cute place for brunch with nice surroundings. The staff was friendly and catered to our needs. The coffee was fresh brewed and piping hot! Our server Justine was AMAZING and super attentive! We ordered the omelet special and the blackened shrimp hash. The omelet was tasty but just a typical omelet. The blackened shrimp hash was flavorful and good however, the chunks of peppers was off putting (personal preference). Highly recommend 🙂
We thought this was more of the coffee shop, but it is actually more of a brunch sit down restaurant. There is a nice little gift shop and a really pretty dining room. There’s plenty of outdoor seating, too. Overall our experience was great and the coffee was fantastic! It is a little more pricey, but you are definitely getting a great taste for it. Overall, I would give this five stars!
First our waiter was great. Very friendly and checked on us often. The atmosphere is pleasant and beautiful little Cafe and seating outside and inside. The presentation and appearance of everything is good. BUT.... This was by far the most under seasoned, unflavored food that I have honestly ever tasted. We come to hilton head every other year and this was our first time eating here. I ordered the omelet with chicken sausage, onions, peppers and cheese. It came with hash and multigrain toast. We also ordered a plate of French toast. My husband ordered hash browns with mushrooms and cheese, eggs your way and toast. My water was very cloudy (could have been the cup )but I dont think so. This is on the higher price end for Breakfast and just was not good. I love food and flavor and taste and I literally had to put 20 shakes of salt 20 shakes of pepper before I even could get the food down. Had to add hot sauce (I dont even care to use hot sauce) to get some flavor. French toast tasted like eggs and bread. No cinnamon or buttery flavor. Not looking for salty food but this food tasted like everything was opened and just cooked. It was hot though and didnt take too long to come out.We eat at Relish Cafe every visit and wanted to give a different place a chance. If you have had Relish before, you would be able to tell the difference. Maybe more suited for those that eat with your eyes and not for taste. Good customer service and relaxing feel.
BEST coffee and brunch on the island! My family loved it so much we came back a few times during the same trip. They offer a handful of vegan options at brunch along with milk alternatives for the coffee. The atmosphere was great (lots of light), easy parking, and the staff are all very welcoming. I definitely recommend this place and I will be going back again. Also, you can waitlist through google maps when youre close by which is very handy.
We found this little gem on Hilton Head Island. We came back twice, once for breakfast and rode our bikes back for lunch another day. Laid back style. The coffee, smoothies and more menu makes you want to come back and try them all. For breaskfast I had Salmon Benedict. For lunch the Farmers Market, which was a veggie sandwich with eggplant. I ate the whole thing. My granddaughters loved the chocolate chip pancakes. They have inside and outside seating. Friendly staff. We ate outside once and the hostess brought the girls a blanket to ward off the chill in the air. They do practice covid protocol. Wear a mask. Check out their menu on line and you can join the wait list if you are headed to this cafe.
Bad service from hostess and server on this Thursday morning at 7:58 on April 29th. They were not busy and they were rude.Update!!!! Blessing in disguise. Went to Carolina coffee and crumbs and not only was the service impeccable, the atmosphere, and environment was so chill and welcoming. THE food and coffee was best ever!CAROLINA COFFEE and CRUMBS !
Based on their website and menu, you’d be forgiven for thinking that Watusi was a real coffee shop. Unfortunately the reality is very different. I ordered a Cappuccino with oat milk – my “go to” both at home and on the road. When I’m paying $6.50 for such a drink—$5 for the cappuccino and an obscene $1.50 up-charge for oat milk—in a so-called professional establishment, I expect it to be at least as good as what I can make at home and ideally much better. What arrived was a large coffee cup—much larger than the traditional 6oz I was expecting—filled with scolding hot, watery liquid, and a large dollop of scummy foam on top. I realize that oat milk is a little harder to steam than regular milk, but clearly the staff had no idea what they were doing. And what is it with mediocre coffee establishments thinking that quantity is more important than quality? I sent the drink back and decided not to order anything else.I had, however, ordered Biscuits and Gravy—one of their “Specialties”—which arrived shortly after I sent back the coffee. The unattractive plate of food that arrived looked far from appealing, but I didn’t feel there was much I could do at this point, and I was hungry. After a couple of bites of the bland food, with supposedly home-made biscuits (they tasted more like home-mixed from a packet), I noticed what appeared to be a human hair on the side of my plate. So that was sent back too and I left. I’m sure that in a place like Hilton Head, places like Watusi survive based on a steady stream of unsuspecting, new customers, who are just passing through. I will not be returning, and hope this review may encourage others to look elsewhere when visiting the Island.
Excellent find in Hilton Head, very close to Coligny Circle. Perfect breakfast and lunch spot. Absolutely Delicious Gluten free options. Make sure to get there early. It opened at 8am, we got there a little after. The time we left there was a 30 minute wait. But SO Worth it! Can’t wait to go again! I Highly Recommend!
Wonderful little spot for brunch on the island with indoor and outdoor seating. Staff was very friendly and food was delicious! I’m not a vegetarian but ordered the vegetarian Benedict because it sounded so amazing, and it did not disappoint- portables mushroom, spinach, red peppers and onions with poached eggs on top of cauliflower cakes 🤤 The coffee selection was nice and high quality as well, and the safety precautions were clearly outlined and followed well. There was a wait but there’s a cute shop to peruse while you wait so it went quickly. Will definitely return for a vacation brunch again.
Sweet waitresGreat catfish sandwichCould have split it butFinished it all by myself
Very good breakfast. Dont get the pancakes unless you eat alot. There was two huge pancakes that was great. Everything we ordered was great. Highly recommend.
I live here and had been wanting to go to Watusi for awhile. But I was very disappointed when I finally went. I got a cafe latte and a pastry. It tasted like a regular coffee and the pastry was very stale. If I am going to spend this kind of money on a pastry and beverage I at least want it to be edible!!! Pastries and coffee are better at Panera!! Will not be back.
Went today for breakfast and was sat a little after ten minutes of being there. We thought the wait was over but we were so wrong. They seemed to be staffed accordingly but our waitress must have been having a off day. I have been in the food service industry for more than 18 years. From the power of observation I noticed our waitress had our table and three others. We waited 15 minutes before she came to greet us and another 15 to bring our our first round. The two top next to us got their entrees before their beverages came to then as well. Loved the potato cake that I got but my husbands order came out wrong. He ordered the breakfast sandwich with ham and got no ham. I orders the pancakes for my children to split with the strawberries and bananas in the side. Not only did the fruit come on it it came inside of it too. Needless to say we won’t be back.
The food was good and the wait staff was good. Decent coffee. The prices are good. If you want to grab some breakfast and some coffee this is the place.
Frequent visitor to the island and this was my first time checking this place out. Very cute restaurant, very nice staff, and seated very quickly. I ordered the Crab Benedict and was expecting a little more flavor. I also had a lot of shells from the crab so it was hard to enjoy since I was picking those out every couple bites. I was kinda bummed the Crab Benedict didn’t come with a side which is probably my fault for not reading the menu closely enough, but it would’ve been nice with a side of potatoes or fruit, and I paid $2.50 for a can of Diet Coke which again is my fault for not catching it on the menu, so that caught me off guard. The menu looked good though. I think I just missed the mark with what I ordered.
Absolutely love the atmosphere and the food. Deliciious! The fact that they have NY bagels is an added plus. One of my favorite breakfast/lunch places on the island.
Let’s talk about the super comfortable chairs! The restaurant was very clean and the food was fresh.
Our family really enjoyed this unique restaurant for breakfast/lunch. The coffee, omelettes, waffles, biscuits and gravy along w the Italian sandwich was outstanding. We will for sure recommend and come back.
Cinnamon French toast had no cinnamon but lots of nutmeg and was soggy. Pancakes were average at best. Everything else was standard, maybe a step lower than an average diner experience (food-wise). Nothing special.Nice ambiance and waitstaff.
Great breakfast menu with some delicious smoothie selections! beautiful outdoor seating.
STOP DEBATING WHETHER OR NOT YOU SHOULD COME HERE. YOU SHOULD. From kindness to care the service is impeccable. I would trust this staff with the care of my unborn child. As far as the meal itself, it could bring a grown man to his knees. The burrito was explained and executed to absolute perfection. The drinks were a better balance than peanut butter and jelly. If you leave this place without a smile then I believe the issue is really with you.
I want to start off with saying I really dislike having to give a 2 star rating and would love to be proven wrong about Watusi.Went for weekend brunch and was excited to finally try this place. Had a 20 minute wait- no problem and completely understand. When we finally get seated, that’s when it goes downhill. The section was not air conditioned (inside) and the air just sat there stagnant. As we were dealing with that, we didn’t see any server for 15 minutes. Finally got a hold of the hostess and she prompted our server to come to us. We order and think we are good from here on out- nope. Drinks come 20 mins later, food was 3 mins after that(incorrectly) and we never saw our server again until we had to get the hostess again to get our server so we could pay and leave. On top of the food coming out wrong we also had extra food on our bill we hadn’t ordered and wasn’t the incorrect food that came out. So we had to wait another long span for that to be fixed.Again, I really like what I see review wise and on the menu from this place. However, I cannot overlook the fact that it was a series of events that could have been prevented and I have worked in the food industry before during brunch…. Several of those things should have never happened. Hope I can pop in again in several years down the road and this place can redeem itself.
The name belies the actual cuisine which is NOT African at all. Its similar to First Watch if youve eaten there. Youll get a sense of pretense over what youre ordering. If later you find you dont like the taste of something then take care how to share it. They want to hear its awesome or fantastic. They dont care to hear its not what you were expecting. Service drops off further than it already was, which is low. But surprise! Some just love the food because they live in conceptually dominated behavior which EST graduates will get but others may hover in wonderment. The pastry was stale. The coffee bitter. The breakfasts we ordered had mixed reviews. One vote of not what I expected and the others were really great. So, visit and judge for yourself. If youre a lover of pretense, and its awesome and whatnot then this is your place.
Great breakfast or lunch spot. Food was great and reasonably priced. Nice atmosphere
Be sure to ask what you’re paying for a 12 ounce can of Coke - $2.75. Really?! I know it’s Hilton Head, but really, an 800% markup? That seems a bit unreasonable and greedy. That’s a shame because the food is actually good.
This is a great breakfast spot. Food is great and staff is very friendly. French toast was like a touch of home and the hash browns were fantastic.
Service was slow, food was just okay. Our server Jackson wasnt very friendly. Plenty of other great places on HHI Spend your money somewhere else !
Food was delicious! We sat at the breakfast counter & the ladies making the coffee up front were sweet. Perfect environment & so glad it wasnt packed when we went, so there wasnt much of a wait. We will definitely be back!
We’ve been coming to Watusi’s for almost 10 years. We absolutely love it. There is an extremely rude new manager that I hope gets replaced very soon. We ran into other customers that have been coming also for years and we’re turned off by her as well. Very unwelcoming and rude attitude. We watched her walk over to a table and take butter knifes from 2 kids in front of their mom, and basically told the mom I’m not sure if your comfortable with them playing with knives but I’m not. Completely not her place…. I know staff is hard to find right now but hopefully someone will read this and can help change the vibe before people start not coming back.
Great find. Breakfast was amazing . Staff were the best . Cant wait to go back.
Managed to get a table for breakfast recently and Z, our waitress, was kind and attentive. The mimosa I ordered was dynamite and the bloody mary my mom ordered was excellent as well. My mom enjoyed her benedict and I enjoyed my blackened shrimp hash (although the blackened seasoning was a little overbearing, everything else in the dish made up for it). If it werent for the crazy wait times, I would 100% be back at least once a week for breakfast. Huge kudos to Z and the kitchen staff
This is a very good breakfast spot in Hilton Head, every member of my group enjoyed their meal.
Whole experience was about 2 hours - mostly corrections to our food orders. Our server was rude - seemed as though she wasn’t interested in helping our table and almost all of our orders were incorrect. Didn’t receive water until the 4th time asking. We were never asked how our visit was. 2 stars because food was great and organic but the overall experience was disappointing.
A bit pricey and a little bit of a wait. Really enjoyed the food. They should give the one guy a raise for the bull he went through tho with scheduling haha.
The wait was super long (we think the host might have forgotten us for a while) but the food was delicious and so were the coffee drinks. Nice place for breakfast.
Best breakfast place in Coligny Beach! We tried a couple other highly-rated places before coming here on our third day at Hilton Head, and kept coming back. Service and decor are equally nice, and menu options are all good. Definitely recommended.
Good atmosphere, good food, good service. My only problem is we didnt get real eggs in our sandwiches. This type of place should be using real eggs.
I was so happy to find delicious food with gluten free options! They have a very wide variety of menu items and many of them can be made gluten free which is very nice for someone with celiac disease. Our server, Samantha, was super helpful and knowledgeable! Her concern for dietary restrictions and her knowledge of that were exemplary! She was super nice and welcoming too!
During our recent visit to Hilton Head we found this gem.... we are big on breakfast, and this place is exactly what we need on vacation... they’ve great breakfast selection.... we thoroughly enjoyed our meals every time we came here. I’d highly recommend this restaurant. They also serve lunch... they’re reasonably priced with excellent service!!! Will come back again...
Get here if you can! Had the Blackened Shrimp Hash and definitely was the winner at my groups table! Perfectly cooked, perfectly blackened, on hashbrowns with hollandaise, what?! Yes please! And the coffee was great, too. Highly recommend.
I have eaten here numerous times. The service and the food are outstanding. Every time we are on Hilton Head we are here at least 3 days a week.
Very good food except bagels were not real NY bagels. Eggs Benedict on potato pancakes were very good. Fresh coffee.
Saw the menu online and it looked very interesting. It was as good as I imagined. Traditional items done well, non-traditional items done very well also. I highly recommend.
Seriously the best iced latte I’ve ever had. Me and my husband both ordered the “it is what it is”. Delicious!
First time eating there. Good breakfast in a very comfortable setting.
The entire place was a very clean. Great breakfast place. The prices were good and the staff was super friendly. It’s becoming our go to breakfast place while on the island.
Thought this was a real coffee shop but apparently I was mistaken. I would even consider Starbucks a coffee shop compared to here if you feel me.
I wanted to love this place I chose upon my arrival at on island for my first visit. It took me forever to be acknowledged upon my seating. The food was just ok and it took long enough for my food to get cold to get the ketchup that was supposed to come with it. The assignment of the wait staff was really confusing. I’m pretty sure I had to ask everyone for help because my table was off to the side and I’m a single. In the end I felt like I was bothering them especially when I asked for pastries before I closed out my tab. 3 star is generous.
From Cincinnati Ohio Young Prettyboy40 Hello everyone First Time experience Very good food selection breakfast and lunch and dinner was really good Very clean place Great staff and co workers Good location I will definitely be back again soon. Good Beverages I recommend you should try it Be safe everyone 6_13_21
FANTASTIC experience! Outstanding friendly service, phenomenal food, great location. Highly recommend Watusi. Ive never had anything but a truly wonderful experience there. This is a definite must stop by when on the island.
The food is wonderful! FRESH and healthy portions! Very prompt and pleasant service! Brought my 88 yo Mom with her walker to breakfast. They were very accommodating. She ordered a combination of two different entrees with no issues and I had an awesome fluffy omelett perfectly cooked with hashbrowns, a side of bacon and the best coffee. The menu has a number of food choices. Theres something for everyone including vegan. Looking forward to my next visit to try the corned beef hash.
We were lucky enough to stop at Watusi during our stay on Hilton Head. We called ahead to be sure they permitted dogs. When we arrived, they already had a table prepared with a water bowl for our sweet pup! Marina was our server and was outstanding; she delivered friendly, prompt, and attentive service. After looking over the menu, we decided on the corn beef hash and eggs Benedict meals with pecan pie coffee. We were also pleased to learn that they serve dog breakfast! All meals were gobbled up and thoroughly enjoyed by man and beast alike. We are grateful for our memorable experience, and hope to be back soon!
The site said outdoor seating, but there is none though they do have a patio.Note they didnt respond to the original post for weeks...it was quite warm several weeks ago, and they just didnt care.Dont let them fool you now. If customers were first, they would have responded before almost a month passed.
Great food menu for breakfast or lunch. Very welcoming atmosphere and friendly service!
Nice offerings! Everything that came out of the kitchen looked delicious. The benedict and biscuits and gravy were good. Good tea and coffee as well.
Coffee was ok. Should have had a fresh ground latte or drink instead of drip coffee.
Came here with my family for some lunch. The service was a little slow considering it was not that busy. The food was fantastic.
When visiting from out of town we like to explore various eateries but this place was so good we came back the following day. Did not disappoint!! Love it here and did I say Pet Friendly? Thanks Watusi!!
Great breakfast and beautifully designed restaurant. I definitely recommend this place!
Their food was really good. We were seated at the bar, and the service was good. There wasnt much room to move though, it was cramped.
Lovely indoor/outdoor breakfast/lunch restaurant, professionally run from the back to the front. A totally enjoyable dining experience!
My Wife and I agreed, this was a great experience. The food was fresh and quick. The customer service was awesome as well.
Food is great and service is wonderful. Everyone was so nice! My 4 yr old n i have been visiting hilton head for 4 days n this is the first place weve been to where everyone was so nice. The person taking names at the front tremendous my name and my waiter got everything my son and I needed. Thanks for a great experience
Food is great and we really liked it. We would have enjoyed more if we are seated little early.45+ minutes wait time is little too much when you are planning to eat here with kids.
Very nice cafe... but very expensive! Great coffee
