When I need to be transported back in time to Russia, a trip to Golden Grain is in order. They bring in real Russian and Ukrainian black bread. They have REAL Russian sour cream which is unlike anything we produce. Its soft, creamy and dreamy and not as sour as its American counterpart. They have aisle after aisle of all my favorite Eastern European jarred goods to fresh foods from the deli. Yesterdays haul saw me buy Salo and salami, handmade pirogies, black bread, rye flour! And of course a variety of jarred pepper spreads. They have the most extensive array of candies from Russia. Takes me back to a time long ago. Though the factories have all updated their packaging to be more marketing slick, and it makes me miss the old fashioned way Russians wrapped candies in these cute envelopes.I love this place for not just the food, but also for wine, beer, books and movies. Go take a trip to Russia without a visa and pop into Golden Grain.
Solid place! The older couple that own/run the store are rude in an adorable old school kinda way which really adds to the atmosphere. But overall, the dumplings are fantastic, the cookies a tasty, and the cottage cheese is my favorite breakfast item during the work week.
Helpful staff, good variety of products, and good selection of Georgian wines. Will definitely be coming back!
Great place, selection and prices. Elder gentleman who helped me was very nice and hospitable
I visited this store as one of my coworkers asked me to try their honey cake and I was blown away! I definitely bought the honey cake as well as the chocolate cake and both were delicious! The owner was very nice and took me around the shop, showing me things and explaining. I ended up buying a whole bunch of things and everything tasted very good. I will be going back for sure.
A lot of russian products, nice people.
Wonderful place, great and interesting items from all over the world. Owner is friendly. I really like this store.
A typical moms and pops store with compatible prices. I has a good rapport with owners
I visited this store because I just moved to the area and trying new things and as soon I walked in she started staring me down. This lady told me the store was too expensive I should try going to H.EB and not to mention she was following me around the store every second!!! even after I told her I got it I like to shop on my own and pretending like she was trying to help when she knew she was definitely racially profiling me thought I wasnt able to afford anything in her store. I hope you heal woman.
Best Russian store in Houston. Amazing service. The workers are very kind and attentive. Very large selection of products and everything we got was very fresh. The red caviar was amazing. Will definitely be back!
My wife been there today for the first time. She was so excited.Per promise we will advertise you in our Baku community.Good job
They have a ok selection of food. But the lady that works there is soooo rude. Me and my family went there to get some food that you can not get in a regular store. Spent 160$ and barely had anything” and that’s mostly because she weighted kalbasa while it was FROZEN, and it was heavy as a brick”, and honestly could have probably spent more. But the lady started ring my stuff up before I was even done shopping. She kept trying to get us leave, saying that there were too many people and the line was getting “long”. There we literally 3 other costumers in there. Don’t you want people to spend money in your store? No tact, just straight up rude. I will definitely NOT return there.
Food literally you wont find any store, but over priced. Russian general store has the same, located less than a mile away and 25 to 30 % less expensive than Golden Grain .
Extremely overpriced! Super rude the woman by the counter, got angry when i said that I changed my mind about the raviolis, started lecturing me how her extremely overpriced little bag of frozen raviolis (that didnt have a price tag and turned to be $36 after taxes) are the good quality Wow! Wow! I was speechless for a moment when she got so angry!Wont go again! Disgusting LADY!!!!! Disgusting attitude! I truly was about to walk out but already promised my kid an ice cream from the store...
Wonderful family run store, excellent fresh made items, delicious, pre-packaged items, and a great variety all around. This is a gem of a store, love it!
Help cant open door ):
Ive lived in Houston for over 13 years and have never heard of this store but finally got to check it out. They do have competitive prices and a lot more variety of items than competing stores but customer service is terrible. You cant go around the store without the owner walking behind you and looking over your shoulder thinking that youre stealing or pointing out everything that she has in the store. And if you dont shut the entrance door properly, youll get shouted on.Overall, not the most pleasant experience. Id rather pay a few cents more for everything and have better customer service.
Great selection and the lady owner will even cook your favorite Russian dishes custom order. I highly recommend her home made molosolnye pickles. much better flavor with many herbs than the ones they have at Russian General store.
This place has been part of the neighborhood for a long time. It is generally a Russian store, but it has authentic things from other countries also. They have a unique selection of diverse things, from pickled tomatoes to chocolates, imported beverages, herbal products, community publications in Cyrillic, other texts, chocolates, herbs, teas, soup mixes, cakes made to order, fresh sausage, and maybe home-made soup. With kindness and an open mind, anybody can find something to really like here.
On the good side. There is a good variety of product. Expiration dates looked fine on the product I bought. Looks like there is a rich choice of hand made food.On the bad sideFeels like you are back to USSR. Owner walks with you thru the store and keeps promoting their inventory( I would prefer to be left alone, unless I ask for help). Also owner didn’t mind to badmouth other stores with similar products. No itemized receipts are provided. So it was impossible for me to prove that I bought certain goods in this store or not.I agree with posts about fake politeness of the owners. It lasts as long as you buy some stuff. But if problem arises all you hear from the owners is how honest they are.I don’t think like going there again
Very friendly and helpful owners! They have a nice little to go deli counter also.
Best Russian store in Houston area. Big variety of everything. Everything is very fresh and reasonably priced. They had best ryazhenka I ever had. We bought cakes for my sons graduation party and they were delicious and fresh. Smoked mackerel is amazing. Owners are friendly, attentive and very helpful. Definitely will be back. We would never even bother again to go to Russian General store, they have lots of spoiled and out of dates products, higher prices, fewer products, owners are not helpful at all.
I like it but Im russian) the seller (woman) is always nice and try to help. Some stuff is expired but I dont mind it cause I simply dont buy it.
Great Russian store with a good selection of Russian foods. Employees are very friendly and helpful. Great place.
First of all the owners are very friendly and respectful....the store is full of goodie and everything is fresh and tastes yummy!!!! 👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍
Super awesome store! They have the most selection of any Russian store weve ever been to here in the States! Wonderful food and service. Come here for all your Russian food and gift needs
Quite pleasant experience, the owner is a nice man and was very attentive and helpful. Helped me and my girlfriend another time of her visit with some items. Quite few items are actually cheaper then Russ general. Although I only shop here for few specific items and dont go often every time I do its good experience.
Great food, especially the cakes, and the nicest people. We love this store!
Very good place. Good variety of food and people who run the place are very nice. One of the best Russian Stores I have been to.I particularly like cakes from there, strongly recommend.
The place is not in a desired location. It is run by an older couple. While the husband is nice and respectful, his wife is the total opposite. Always pressuring customers to buy more trying to make them feel guilty. And dont even try to send a parcel from there(through meest). She will make you buy at least $50 worth. The food varieties are not bad, but its often a hit or miss in freshness so make sure to CHECK EXPIRATION DATES!! Overall its pretty expensive for what youre getting. You may have to do some digging around Houston but a lot of those foreign products can be found in other stores. I 100% wont be coming back here because of the hustle aspect
Sweet Russian couple. Get candy and deli meats. Even sugarless candy. Lots of imports. They have big jars of pickled mushrooms.
Love it i am like a kid in a candy store
Interesting place and the owner is a lovely person.
Very friendly owners, a fantastic selection of authentic Russian and Slavic foods and drinks. Good selection of imported wines as well.
Cutest shop ever- the couple who own it are really sweet and make a bunch of homemade cakes and meat dishes! I love, in particular, the cake with a bunch of flaky layers
This store located in such a bad strip mall that it basically repulses you at first. However, once you enter, the atmosphere is pretty nice. It is very clean and spacious with various Russian products and deli items. The owners name is Robert and he seemed very nice and welcoming. You can find any kind of Russian food here. The store has a very limited selection of books, drugs and herbal essences.Because of the location, I doubt I will visit it with my family though, unless I have SWAT team in tow. I would strongly suggest for the owner to relocate to a nicer surroundings.
Great food and great people. Family owned Russian store and they always treat me like family. I love the Russian Beer Balktika no.9.
Came at 10:10am but the store was still closed
Great selection. The owner is very friendly. No English or little but helpful
We had a good experience here. Im not sure if I prefer Golden Grain or the Russian General Store
The Best Russian Grocery Store In Houston !!
Very nice store. The owners are extremely friendly and helpful. Get some of their Pelmeni!!!
Had the worst experience in my 8 years of living here. I went to the store to stock up on some Russian food while in Houston as we do not have a Russian store in Austin. I chose the wrong place! When we walked in, it looked ok, the owners greeted us and were very courteous, but don`t be fooled by this fake friendliness. They tried to advertise their store etc. So we bought a lot of food, $150 worth of food. Now we bought some baby sausages for my daughter who was with us. When we came home to Austin and I opened the packed it had yellow liquid in it and when boiled it smelled and tasted sour and funky. So I called the owner to ask questions about the expiration date, because the sticker from the package was missing ( she tore it off). What a change in attitude it was!!! She started yelling at me, calling me stupid, and telling me that I am badmouthing their store and that as long as the sausages were not slimy it was ok to eat them. I just want people to be careful and realize that the friendliness that the owners show only lasts while you are in the store, do not ever try to question the quality of food they sell, you will be yelled at and humiliated like you have never been in your life! Not the way to run a business here in America.
Very courteous to a non Russian speaker. The selection is quite good and the prepared foods and salads are absolutely amazing.
The best Russian Store in Houston for over 20 years! Everything you need! Good (Russian Speaking) Service!
Food is not fresh here.I was going to buy Russian dumplings here and saw through the clear bag the dumplings were very yellow- must have been old. No expiration date on this and many other perishable items in the store. Bought some Russian chocolate candies and most of them were stale - a mix of old ones and fresher ones. The prices for the same items are generally higher here than in General Russian store. This store also charges tax on every food item which I find ridiculous and not even sure if it is legal.Going back to General Store - was a mistake, not worth saving 5 min extra time driving.
Great selection
Love this place!
Great family run store with Eastern European food and some gifts. Owners are very nice and helpful.
The owners were very rude when I told them that some of their produce is bad, despite the sticker. I think they basically sell it as long as it looks good, and they wont accept it back. Never buying anything from them again.
Great service nice lady very helpful I enjoyed the borscht and I will be back
I travel a lot inside USA, and I visited a lot Russians stores in this country, but this store completly different. Dont visit this uncomfortable, not healthy place! Service completly sucks! Remind me USSR period, everything looks old, especially food. Dont waste your money and safe your health!!!This guys dont deserve clients, run away from that store!!!The worst service I have ever seen...
A lovely Russian shop with friendly owners and a wide selection! 100% reccomend this to anyone wanting to try authentic Russian goods!
Olivie is ok. Doctorkaua kelbasa was tasteless and not fresh.
Aww I miss this place. If you need some Russian food stop on by!
Nice place good staff and owners
Its just okay but check the date labels. They have a lot of outdated products.
Good place for a touch of Russian deli
Great variety of Russian products
Busy place on weekends so be patient when you wash and dry clothes
Friendly, family-owned, authentic. Cant ask for much more.
Any type of russian food you want they got
Love the assortment of cheese
Rude, unfriendly. Nothing special.
Nice owners
10/10
Нашли, что искали👍🏻
A terrible store is so huge and empty there is not a single person there is no nine hundred locked sausage ... there are no such stores in Russia for a year now, its funny how they still stand this business, except for pills there is nothing to take reminds of how good people can be during perestroika, but they need improve the conditions ashamed that the store looks like this ... Or close it is not a shame
A good selection of products from Russia and neighboring countries. The friendly time of the hosts - Svetlana and Robert - will always meet you with a smile, help you with a choice, and talk about your sore point.
Kulichi disgusting this year: burnt, dry and with an unpleasant aftertaste of duchess. And the store itself is good.
Great choice and reasonable prices! I liked everything very much, we will definitely return.
