The decor is simple and a little run down. The food is absolutely everything you need from an old fashion diner. Had the chicken fried steak platter with a strawberry milkshake, everything was delicious, cooked to perfection, decent portion. Even the unassuming salad was surprisingly delicious with the blue cheese dressing. Me and my boyfriend ate for 34 bucks, full bellies and some food left to take home.
Checked out this Irving institution for dinner last night and will definitely be back for a shake and cheese fries!Service: Friendly and familiar. You could tell a lot of the clients are regulars, but the staff treats everyone as such, creating a warm environment.Food: Strokers Cheeseburger is my fiancé’s new favorite burger. The Rocky Burger was good, but next time I think I’ll add bacon to kick it up a notch. We also ordered shakes and cheese fries - I think they stole the show! Love that they use Bluebell ice cream - definitely makes the shake.Atmosphere: The place is family friendly, for sure. The I super appreciated their pictures showing Irving’s history, instead of just generic vintage items. It made the place for me.Overall: Good food, great service, fun atmosphere! We’ll be back and hope you check it out too!
Stopped in because I love a classic burger. Everything about this place was classic. Great decor and awesome service. Adreena took my order which was the strokers cheeseburger with bacon, and a chocolate and peanut butter shake. She made me one of the best shakes I’ve ever had. The burger was delicious and very filling, double meat and cheese. I could barely finish. The tots were nice and crispy, but Adreena says the fries are better. If you are in the area, I highly recommend this place. Come out and support your local businesses.
Either you love it or you don’t! Friendly service, lots of history, and you will never eat/drink a finer milkshake-and-a-half!!! Tots over fries!!! French dip, cheeseburger, order it all and share with friends! WE LOVE IT!
Just ate here for the first time. Had a hand made milk shake, that was wonderful! Had a Patty Melt with fries, that was wonderful! I love the feel of this place and the charm. The people were really nice, and local too. The woman that served us has worked there for over 3 years and knows the place like the back of her hand! Wish we had gotten her name!Thank you for the great experience! We will be back!
Best burger I had in a long time! Get the fries, not the tots. Waiter was really nice too! We will definitely be going back. 👍
Me and my wife love using trains to get us around. I found this place looking at places to eat within walking distance around train stations. Just hop on the TRE and get off at Downtown Irving. Its just across the street. Big State takes me back. Just like the soda fountains back in the day. Great burgers! Just like you remember. Cant wait to go back!
I have been here to eat several times. Love the place. But now it is under new ownership. Not sure about its future. They have removed the Chief Salad from the menu along with many other things. Not a good thing when you are a vegetarian. I understand they have been getting a lot of complaints about removing things from the menu. I hope the new owner is listening. We have to give him a fair chance and see what he is going to do with the place. My server was fantastic. I just didnt like what I felt and saw. We shall see.
Great Novelty restaurant.Great Server, the lady with the long hair was our server. Didnt catch her name. The burgers are to die for !!!Onion rings are the bomb !!!To bad they dont sell alcohol 😂
Food was delicious!! Our server, Rose was fantastic and kind and cheerful. Anna was sweet too! Brenda was pretty grumpy with the other staff, but she’s been there a while, so she probably get tired of the newer staff. All in all for this large table of family members visiting from out of state truly enjoyed the food and would come back again. Thanks!
First visit. Can tell there is history here. This place has character and practically a soul. Good food, nice staff. Makes me think of the scenes from Back to the Future in the malt shop. Only...deserted. I dont know whats going on with the inside but does not look like pictures on their website. Emptied out, missing wall decor, no stocked merch, very quiet. The marketing gal in me wants to go in and shake things up and capitalize on its uniqueness. Wouldnt take much. Play some 50s music, some old shows on the TV! Liven it up with some more wall decor! Get a pinball machine in there! Kinda sad, the potential...but it is just....quiet and kinda boring. :( Will be back, though, to support a local business.
Good ice cream but to long of a wait even though there was only two or three others there
One star is for your website. I want to see a menu so I can decide what I want BEFORE I come to the restaurant. Looking for kind of burger I wanted and to see if you have cake and pie for dessert. Not user friendly webb site.
The food and service were good, but it took a while before we got our food.
Where to begin... 5 of us, two items never came. We saw one burger up under the heater for 20+ mins. Told the waitress when she brought it to forget it. Place was empty, everyone knew but us. This empty, should have been no mistakes.
The food was excellent. Service was ok, nothing special. It made me uncomfortable that the political affiliation was clear, and I wont return to a place with a sandwich named The Donald. One more concerning thing - the table behind me and in front of me both had people coughing, like hard coughing. That was super uncomfortable.
The waiter and cook were very friendly. Nice atmosphere and good sandwich. I grew up at Big State Drug. Brings back a lot of good memories.
Nice waitress.Food was a little bland, need more seasoning.Shake was ok.
I 1st came to this place when it was an actual pharmacy with a fountain diner in the middle. They I saw it transformed to its glory when Mr. Rick bought it. It helped local sales people and artists with a small resale shop in it also. Now it was bought again and the mood walking in today was so heart breaking. I will continue to go because the location is amazing and there is so much happening on main St. I hope the new owner does great things to Big State. To be continued...
Really cool diner with 1940s flare. Like stepping back in time
Classic! Burgers, shakes, and Rootbeer Floats are awesome 👌 If the waitresses were in uniform, it would be like stepping back in time!
Food was really good and fresh. The scenery was even better. The workers were really nice and over all a really good experience.
If your looking for a bland, generic, boring burger and all short cuts taken, frozen crinkle fries, a wait staff that’s more interested in taking among themselves than serving you. This is your place. If you want a good burger and fries go to griffs down the street.
This place is clean staff is friendly and food was delicious first time eating here and enjoyed it
This place is untouched by time...the food is AMAZING, service is great, and atmosphere is authentic - highly recommended!
Everything was great. Didnt give 5 bc new person put the garnishes on husbands sandwich he requested be excluded and didnt put ehat he wanted. It was still good. No longer have the homemade chips :(
Excellent experience, true to old school memories. The service was impeccable and the burger and fries were amazing!! Definitely coming back!!
Great food and great staff. I loved the atmosphere
Great place for the family. Large fluffy pancakes and I really enjoyed The Donald with onion rings!
Enjoyed breakfast had pancakes bacon and eggs
Good food.... But expected more out of all ive seen advertized
Eating here was like stepping back in time. If u luv old timey stuff, youll LOVE this place! Great atmosphere, relics everywhere & history (which u dont find so much anymore). The shakes are TO DUE FOR!
I have been to this establishments a few times and I loved the service and the food the first couple of times I have went. Last time, I had went to get just a small bite before work and I felt out of place. It took forever to get my drink order and then my food order. I was only checked up on just once and that was to ask me if I wanted my bill. All the other tables were getting fantastic service, but I was the only one that was not receiving any. I felt mistreated and discriminated among everyone. This is not okay. If I would, I would have placed zero stars.
Great service and such a cool olace
We only had milkshakes tonight and they were good as ever!
Food was ok.. I cream soda was gross to me..tasted like it was made with Sprite instead of Soda water. Only had 2 sips before I trashed it. Very disappointed as I drove out of my way to try this place.
Great food and great service. Love the nostalgic feel of the diner. Great way to finish a hard day withba rootbeer float.
We only 2 Shakes.. Nothing Else! Good prices !
Great place to eat reminded of my childhood Drug store butter toasted buns homemade burgers & piesExcellent😎👍❤
Very nice staff and love the food and shakes
Not very busy for a Saturday morning, took 30 minutes to get our food. The omelets, pancakes and hash browns were excellent but 30 minutes so only 3 stars
We were headed someplace else to eat when we spotted this diner. Glad we changed our minds. I had the Patty Melt and onion rings. Husband had the Big State Burger. We loved it. Friendly staff and prices too.
Lately its looking kind of dead but the food is still magnificent!
Loved the atmosphere as well as nostalgic feel. The shakes are incredible!
Really good grill fare and nostalgic atmosphere. Great and timely service.
Great place with some of the best off the grill food Ive had in Irving, TxHooray!!
The best malts, shakes & floats in all of Irving,Tx. Good food and a interesting place to go. Nostalgic restaurant. History of Irving,Tx. Nice gift shop. I used to go here back when it was a pharmacy and fountian.(1968) Blue plate special every weekday.😋😋😋Big State also sales the old candy we used to het in the 50s through the 70s ! Hershey bars in the old wrapers. Very fun place to go ans reminisce ! 🎤🎶🎵🎸🎶Homemade cakes & pies daily ! Enjoy your day with owner Rick Fareless !💞❤💖💓
Looks like they are different owners . Waitresses were running around like they havent done any waiting before. Plus I ordered tater tots and they were over cooked. Asked for fries to replace the tots and never received them . I miss the old cook . He had it down to perfection
I love the burgers here but my latest experience was very disappointing, when our food finally came after a respectable weight my bun had what was pretty clearly mold in it. The waitress was super apologetic and instead of just putting on a different bun the cook remade my entire burger but it took another 20 minutes and they didnt even offer to compensate me for the moldy bun. This is the only time Ive had a negative experience here so Im going to give them another chance because the burgers are amazing.
Accidental find! We wandered into Big State Fountain Grill looking for maybe something vegetarian, without much hope really. WOW, best veggie burger weve had! The cook is wonderful, everything cooked to perfection, the wait staff, fun, efficient and fast. While we waited for our food, we wandered the restaurant looking at all the 50s memorabilia. We were just traveling through but if we lived closer, this would be a regular!
This is always a homey-favorite. With a diner feel and food made to order, the experience is all there.I can never pass up a Big State vanilla malt.
Great food ..felt like i was at the fair ..
Beat little local diner. Good food, good prices, nice people. Fun old timey decor.
Delicious chicken fried steak and french fries and salad with a drink!
My first time going to Big State Fountain Burger and I have to say it was very Delicious and the environment was so cozy the employees were very respectful and very kind . I most definitely go back with my family and friends and I will let everyone know in Irving this is the best Burger joint around.
Great food!!! Great staff Tyler is awesome
This place is so good! Just go.
Good food nice environment very historical
Where to start? Maybe the atmosphere. Extremely nostalgic. I have a big fondness for the 30s to 50s. The foods is really good and the shakes/malts are amazing. The staff are really great to.
Very Cozy and respectful employees and very clean the Burgers are amazing and everything about this place screams 50s type feel and I love it!😁😃
Was not what it use to be. The a/c wasnt working well and there is no customer service.
Great place for burgers and old time diner feel
Went here when we first moved to Irving about 6 years ago, Unfortunately me and my son got sick from the food. On the bright side the place is real nostalgic and like a real diner and thats the best part Im sure!
Catfish special was great. Excellent waiter.
Downtown Irving soda fountain in business since 1948. Large tasty burgers, fries onion rings extra charge, chili, salads, chicken sandwiches, shakes with Blue Bell. Breakfast also offered until noon. Patty melt on marbled rye had juicy patty, choice of cheese, grilled onions with added tomato, half and half fries and onion rings (new waitress refused to do this for me last visit). To go cup of sweet tea was offered. A bit pricey, but burgers are large. Great service today.
Separated seating, but open. Very good home made food, made in house chips are great.
Good burgers and western omelets.
The ambiance of this awesome place is literally traveling back through time. I just cant live this place enough!
Always great food..Tony is the best on the Grill
Great workers! Feel like family everytime i go there. Food is straight up good but the shakes are the real winners.
Great atmosphere, great burger, but fries and tots very greasy
The atmosphere was great, the waitstaff was excellent, but the burgers were just ok. They were thick and juicy, but something about the flavor was just dull. Plus the price was quite high for what we got. We wont go back at least for the burgers, maybe there other options are better? If you want a great burger, go down the road to Griffs.
