I love this place so much. Ive been going there since they were on Abbott Kinney and adore their new home on Venice Blvd. They have excellent staff and a consistently excellent selection of items that changes ever-so-slightly over time, so theres always old favorites and interesting new things:)

This store and gallery sparks joy! I want to buy everything, which is so hard for a minimalist like me. Oh, how I love visiting this store and buying a little something to add to my collection. Also, wonderful place to buy a gift...hint.

My husband and I always wondered what Tortoise General Store was, so we felt the need to pop in over the weekend. What IS this place? A 7-Eleven type store, a liquor shop, a small grocery store?Never mind the kimono I was wearing, I had no idea how appropriate it would be....Upon entering, a curation of Japanese goods welcomed us as we perused the shelves. Clothes, pottery, watches, shoes, lights, décor and more at this trendy yet cultured store. The lady behind the counter was friendly and said itd be no problem to take some photos, wahoo! With LAs incredibly diverse population, its normal to walk into a store and feel like youve been transported to that country. Thats what happens in Tortoise, youre transported to Japan. The store feels like a museum as well, with pottery and items on display that are so pretty you dont know if you can buy them or not, (but guess what, you CAN)!If you dig culture, minimalist style, items for your home and love to shop locally then you must stop in Tortoise! This store embodies the Japanese aesthetic. Artisan products makes shopping here a feast for the eyes. Be forwarned, the prices match the high quality. Although we were able to get in as walk-ins, reservations are recommeded during these days of COVID.

This is one of the coolest store in L.A. Located in the center of the rising local street called Abbot Kinney Blvd, among many hip and fav stores and restaurants, this one is always welcoming whether you are looking for something fabulous gift for your friends or loved ones, or just looking around for fun things, you can always find something special, especially if you love pottery, this place has many “one of a kind” pottery stuff in the back of the front store. Just be careful while cruising in the store because it’s isles are very narrow!!

What can I say about their coffee selections besides amazing. The aroma is great, the flavor is better. Seasonal offerings for autumn and winter and a little something for everyone whether you like fruity flavors, chocolate, or snickerdoodle.

Tortoise is a shop, a playground and an art gallery of exquisite objects - the practical and the artistic joined in the magic of Japanese art, culture and history. It’s the best place on earth - go and politely enjoy the wonders

I walked through Tortoise General Store the other day. Cool items, but very overpriced. Stocked entirely with Japanese housewares and gifts, the store has a nice selection of merchandise. As I strolled around though, I couldnt help realizing that I could get the same items in Little Tokyo or Mitsuwa Marketplace for a fraction of the cost.

So good, so imported. Totally Japanese shop with the most amazing goods. They have a new location on Venice Blvd. but all the same great selection. I love the tonbari towels and artisanal workshops available through their newsletter.Today we had tickets to a wood carving class lasting three hours, after which we got to keep our work. It was really special and unlike any other shop activity in town. I highly recommend this place!!

This is one of the coolest stores. Much better than the Window displays portray. Traditional and modern Japanese wares- including amazing incense, traditional pots, pans and minimalist brass accessories for the home. They have the best veggie brushes - traditional Japanese ones, not the cheap plastic ones for cleaning veggies too!
