In many ways, the work of a critic is easy. We risk very little yet enjoy great power over those who offer up their creations to the world. I experienced a wonderful iced cream at the Chocolate Shoppe. To say it challenged my preconceptions of what ice cream could be would be a gross understatement. It has rocked me to my core. I shall be retuning again soon, hungry for more.

Great selection of flavors. Cups or three styles of cones. Ice cream is well made and chilled to just the right temperarure, (not too soft or hard). Well worth the time to stop if you are in the area.

THEY HAVE SUCH A HUGE SELECTION! There is literally something for everyone. Also highly recommend the butter beer drink they have there. It was pretty much one of the best ice cream experiences Ive had in a long time.

Amazing drinking chocolate, as well as candied peanut popcorn! Everyone was super friendly and even gave some helpful tips on how to make the drinking chocolate taste even better.

Came in here august 25th 2021 and they kick us out because we don’t have a mask. Yet provided no masks and said we could buy one somewhere else . My favorite ice cream place no longer getting my business . Went into knuckleheads and they didn’t require masks but gave us free masks and even EXTRA masks when we told them what happened . I’m not against wearing masks but if you can’t even provide masks and just kick your customers out you’re doing it wrong. Not like they couldn’t prepare for this and no one else is requiring them so maybe you should provide them

First off this place is great! They have tons of unique flavors and each flavor is better than the next. Secondly, they have vegan ice cream! Truly delicious and creamy vegan soy ice cream that is so smooth. None of that grittiness that often accompanies other brands non-dairy ice cream. I got the sweet black cherry vegan ice cream and it was beyond tasty! I suggest you stop in and get some for yourself. You will eat it so fast it won’t even have a chance to melt.

A great little ice cream shop on State Street. It even had vegan options for my friend and a decent selection for myself that enjoys dairy. Its nice that the downtown shop is open later than 9pm. The staff were all very helpful, efficient, and friendly.

Best ice cream Madison! Seriously people you gotta try this place! They have a ton of flavors to choose from and toppings to suit any taste. Having this shop right on state is a staple for the Capitol city. Being able to watch all the shenanigans and kooks walk by and go down while enjoying such deliciousness is second to none people. Go there, you wont be disappointed.

A lot of the flavors are very sweet but the rhubarb crumble, Zoreo, and passionfruit Italian ice were spot on.

I love ice cream, but as a vegan its difficult to find. This place has options! Most of the cones are vegan as well. The cost for my one scoop cone was less than $4 the customer service was great. My only complaint was the vegan ice cream could be better. I wasnt a huge fan of the soy one I got. I think they should look into getting a coconut milk, oat milk, or cashew milk based ice cream selection as they tend to be creamier and not as icy. Other than that I highly recommend!

Chocolate Shoppe makes the best Ice cream Ive ever had and theyve been making it in Madison for decades. I cant get Ice cream anywhere else because it doesnt compare. Only thing is I wish they opened the state street location until midnight and I bet theyd get plenty of customers.

Ice cream was great-This $&@! Just Go Serious is incredible. BATHROOMS WERE DISGUSTING. There wasn’t toilet paper in the dispenser, just a roll sitting on top. There wasn’t soap either!

Chocolate Shoppe does a great job of funneling people through the store without letting it build up too much. The flavors are posted outside which makes it easy to decide what to order.

Yes please! Perfect location for grabbing an ice cream cone especially during hot summer days or on your way to the Union Terrace. Located a few blocks from Capitol Square. So many flavors it is mind blowing.

My favorite place on state street! The highest quality ice cream made, period. Combine that with an owner who really cares about his employees. This a must stop for any tourist, student, faculty, office worker, skateboarder....everybody!

One of the best ice cream shops! The seasonal/limited edition flavors are to die for specifically the Lemon Poppy Seed & Fat Elvis. WHOA! Amazing. Ice cream is one of my favorite treats ever - and Chocolate Shoppe is one of my go to spots!

Icecream wasnt cold enough, took about two steps outside and it was already liquid. The exhausted parent is bourbon flavored with the sickly sweet fake flavoring.

Plenty of different flavors to choose from for premium ice cream. The staff here is friendly patient and informative. Nice place to grab a cone or a bowl and people watch from table seating. Fat Elvis was a favorite flavor on this day.

Madison-based ice cream shop with some tasty vegan options. At most of their locations, theyve usually got two soy options and two sorbet/Italian ice options that work for vegans. Recently, theyve also added a vegan section to their menu making it easier for us. This summer, Ive been defaulting to a dish of sorbet, but Ive had a milk shake a couple of times and been quite satisfied.

Lots of flavors to choose from. Friendly staff. Quite helpful in letting us decide as you get free taste samples. The sundaes taste amazing. Any double scoop sundae can easily server as dinner and not necessarily a dessert after dinner🙂The location is amazing too. Right behind the shop, you find a mini amphitheatre kind of a set up where they screen movies occasionally.

This place is AWESOME! I’m a big fan of ice cream in general, but this place is great. Every flavor I have tried has been awesome, and the place is always clean. Great place for a quick treat!

Always love going there. They have dairy-free options that are wonderful. Love the Carrot Mango Italian Ice! They also have the Exhausted Parent (dairy) that offers a little bit of a bourbon and coffee kick 😁. The seating areas are sometimes a little messy but it depends on the location.

I love Chocolate Shoppe ice cream, but not the State Street location. They scoop extremely small compared to the Atwood location. The last 2 times I’ve been here, I got one small scoop of ice cream was about an inch above the cone. My friend ordered a junior scoop and it was twice as big as mine. On Atwood, it’s always just the right amount for the price. On State Street, I always feel ripped off to pay $4 for 5 bites of ice cream.

A bit of a wait due to being quite busy on a Saturday evening and employees werent very friendly with the interactions I saw while waiting. But once served, the ice cream was good. Just expect to wait a little while on the weekends probably, and realize employees are probably not going to be super cheery.

They got ice cream. Give them money and theyll give you some ice cream. I recommend the peach melba. Its good ice cream.

Not liking the Chocolate Shoppe is strong indicator for a negative prognosis on long-term mental well being. How can you not like the place where three-year-olds vocally process whether they want blue moons or super-bat-man ice cream. All the while the parents contemplate the dilema of trying the next bourbon/caffeine infused ice cream heaven, going back to one of the many old favorites that havent gotten much attention recently. The decision will be hard, for all ages. Just remember, at a ice cream parlor like this, there is no wrong answer.

Chocolate shoppe is one of my favorite icecream places; however, this location on State Street is my least favorite spot. The freezer here doesnt seem to work properly because the icecream is either all mushy and soft or so hard that the employees cant even scoop it out without wrestling with it for 5 min. I noticed that the serving size or the scoops here are lot less than the other place that we go to for the same price. Not to mention, the usual long lines. But the one positive thing here is the flavor selection tend to be more than other places and they switch them out quicker.

Excellent ice cream! Even had dairy free for my grand daughter who is allergic to milk! The staff was fun and quick... oh and patient!!! Price was excellent! Yumalicious chocolate dipped waffle cones, sprinkled with.....wait for it....M&Ms!!!! How can that go wrong!?!

This place has a crazy amount of ice cream, quick service, and smiling faces. I totally recommend this place to anyone looking for somewhere to stop for ice cream after a day of fun at the park, or zoo. Lots of awesome flavors that Ive never even heard of before so theres no reason to ever stop going.

Good ice cream, very wide selection to chose from. Always a hard pick between this and cold stone, as they are right across the street from one another.

The line was long and the staff were obviously moving fast but while the wait was long the food was worth it. They are just because they are a good local spot. Worth the weight.

Despite how busy it gets, staff remains friendly and helpful to those undecided on their order. The ice cream itself is superb.
