Great new coffee shop for downtown Middleton. Upscale interior and lots of different seating areas. Longtables, leather couches and chairs, 2 different bars to sit at and more along two walls and lots of outdoor seating too. Food is super inconsistent based on who is working. I always get the Southwest wrap. It’s awesome, but it keeps getting pared down.At first, it was a larger wrap with celery, carrot sticks, fruit, and two different sauces. It was awesome.They have removed the lighter green sauce, the carrots, and the celery. The dish is now just three small slices of pineapple, a smaller wrap, and one sauce.The drinks are good, but it is ENTIRELY dependent on who is working. I just would really like to see some consistency here for the prices they charge. Once that comes back, then it’s a five star place.

I think its important to recognize that the original review still can apply, the actions of the owner is immature and disheartening. --- Original review: Cool atmosphere. Love the lighting and variety of textures throughout the building, there was definitely some great planning that went into the building. I got a Vanilla Latte and a Blueberry Muffin which came with some optional yogurt and nuts on top. The muffin was easily shared with me and a friend. The muffin was great with the yogurt and the latte was a solid mix of sweetness and cream. Overall, really good experience!

Loving the Helbachs in Madison! The atmosphere and decor is fresh and chill and the lattes are superb. The kitchen located right in the cafe is amazing and portions are so generous for the price.

It’s not too often I give such a low review but I very strongly dislike this place. Too hipstery, way overpriced, and the drinks are mediocre at best. They don’t have matcha (only seasonally) and they are out of oat milk, despite telling me “oat milk goes well with my chai latte” okay, then, so glad to hear that. I tried this place one other time and I was unimpressed and now I will never be back- don’t waste your time just because the “vibe” looks quaint.Also, good luck finding the bathroom because it’s not labeled at all and no one will help you find it.Also, no chargers in any of the “good” sitting areas, so have fun when your battery dies.

Highly recommend for business meetings, work space is available and of course delicious breakfasts and lunches. Quality coffee offered as well. Highly recommend to visit.

Just ate there this morning... Outstanding food and very courteous service. Had a mix-up with my coffee which was rectified immediately and with a totally unnecessary apology. I highly recommend the bacon/egg sandwich if youre going for breakfast. Tasty!Update: Ate there again the morning... just as great as yesterday! Dont believe people about mask shaming or any of the other ridiculous things people are saying. Food is great, coffee is great and the people are very respectful to everyone.

We drove through Middleton and decided to stop for coffee at Helbachs....Delicious coffee!! Perfect temperature and able to drink right away is a big plus. Reasonable prices and very friendly knowledgeable staff. Would definitely go back and recommend.

Stopped in this morning for the first time. Great coffee, great food, great service and a friendly clean and welcoming atmosphere!!! Dont listen to the 1 star and lower star reviews these people are frankly out of their minds and just want to hurt the reputation of the business. Haters will be haters and I have an extremely hard time believing a single one of them have actually ordered any food or coffee at this establishment much less set foot inside. They are attacking this business solely on its standing up for truth and freedom. The stories that you hear about the girl being shamed are false and not one of the workers or patrons gave off the slightest impression that this could ever have happened. It is disgusting that some random person can make up a wildly outrageous story and vilify a good business. The perpetrators should be held personally and legally responsible for the defamation and slander of Helbachs. A great atmosphere for dining, having a conversation, or enjoying a fine coffee or tea. I particularly appreciate the owners balanced approach to providing a reasonable and healthy, safe environment, without oppressive and unreasonable official restrictions. At no time was I put in a risky position, nor did I put anyone else at risk. It can be done!

Only heard of this place because of the free advertising the protesters are giving it. Okay coffee, tasty food and desert. Staff was courteous. Interior looks very nice. Again, cant stress this enough, probably never would have been here if not for the protesters.

I went for a snack. All the food was very good quality and many options for coffee drinks and tea. Staff was very pleasant and helpful. I was looking for dairy and gluten free options which they had. It was a wonderful peaceful environment.

I’ve, on multiple occasions, been privy to the staff berating customers in subtle and not-so-subtle ways. There seems to be quite a heavy stench of shame that hangs in the air here. A deadness in their eyes. A few times now, I’ve felt a presence in this place. Something putrid—something demonic. Not long after entering, you feel a dull chill start at the base of your skull, and roll all the way down your spine. This feeling festers at the base of your torso, moving from back to front. It turns into a painful ache—a terrible soreness that’s sickening and strange. It’s inexplicable. It feels like an ancient evil.

Excellent roasted coffee options and superb service. Definitely will make it back when in town. Made a special trip to try this little family owned coffee shop to support local business and entrepreneurial freedom.

Was horrified apon seeing the bathroom. To say the least it was one the most disgusting bathrooms I’ve ever seen. And in this day and age you would think that folks would care more about sanitation. Take my word your better off not stopping at Helbachs Coffee Roasters.

Its sad when so many write deceptive and untrue reviews, as most or the majority, of the one stars are. It appears now that the darkness has defaced some of the outside seating. I have been to Helbachs many times, and the food, coffee, and tea have been very good. Their baked items are stellar, especially the chocolate chip cookies, flourless monster cookies, and oatmeal raisin chocolate chip cookies. I have never had anything gross show up in my food or beverages, never have witnessed any employee doing something gross, and have never had a negative interaction with an employee, even when wearing a mask upon entering. The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it. If anyone is interested in that quote explained, ask any of the Helbachs, theyd gladly explain.

I recently attended this coffee shop and the no mask policy made me feel unsafe. It disregarded the recommendation from the county so I went in anyways with a mask and felt unwanted. The barista was very rude to me and was clearly judging me for my choice to keep on a mask. I felt I was treated unfairly and even the latte I ordered was very cold and didn’t taste good at all. It was unprofessional for the worker to act this way since I was a paying customer and the mask wasn’t affecting anyone. I must say I do not recommend this place once so ever. There are many better drink and food options at other local spots and you’ll be respected.

Stopped to get a quick coffee and snack, but the food was 1. Way overpriced and 2. Barely any food at all. Same for the coffee, paid 5 dollars for a drink 75% of which was ice. I was not harassed for wearing a mask, hence the 2 stars, but dont waste your time, or money, for this scam.

I have been to this coffee shop (call it that but it is much more) 5 or 6 times now and each, initially for coffee and bakery items, later for some their lunch or breakfast sandwiches. All were delicious and well beyond expectations. They roast their coffee on site and it is fresh and loaded with flavor, clearly the best coffee in the area. The Decor and music just have a nice balance, just a nice place to be. There are a number of people there with laptops open, but I find it a nice place to read, or just to hang out. Jim

“Mask free zone”? So we are now completely disregarding what state government is requiring? Are you all in denial about covid, or is it the blatant ignorance peaking through? This family, from the parents to the kids, is the worst representation of what a good family owned business should be. I’m very disappointed and will never be returning.

I first came here a few months ago and was so excited to have such a great location here in Middleton! I now come here all of the time to work and get away from the office. Whenever I have meetings, I also hold them here. The environment is beautiful and prettier than any other coffee shop in the Madison area. The coffee never disappoints. Ive actually now purchased their coffee for some of my marketing events and I have had so many customers come up and ask me where I got the coffee because it was the best they have had. You are missing out if you havent been here yet or dont come here regularly!

Helbach’s is a terrific local coffee shop with breakfast and lunch available too. Coffee beans roasted on site; not like the other places. It’s also large enough to offer lots of different kinds of seating - either community tables or couches or smaller private tables or bar stools. The staff are genuine and real; not corporate types. And they have grab and go sandwiches too, if you don’t want to wait.

Absolutely love this place, friendly baristas and amazing coffee. I live in Green Bay and still make trips down to grab some coffee and a snack.

For the appearance and allure of such a “deluxe” café experience, it was not worth the hype. I got a latté and the espresso was completely burnt. I even wondered if the milk they use might have been bad. Take your money elsewhere.

Seriously the service was terrible. as i walk to the shop i notice it says it’s a “mask free zone” excuse me?? what kind of irresponsible store owner would purposely endanger the safety and sanitation of their customers and workers?? atrocious. when i went to order coffee, the process was so tedious and the workers were nice however plus i felt bad bc of the horrible store owner but anyways the store owner just gave the place a terrible vibe, full of nastiness and the opposite of hospitality. will not be going back as the coffee was terrible.

Upon entering the store, the woman at the counter begin hurling racial slurs and threats towards me (im white btw) simply because I did not adhere to the sign posted at the door and decided to follow the law and wear a mask inside of their store. I dont think these hateful people and their ignorant store should be in the great town of Middleton

Ordered a coffee and a wrap and paid over $30, it took two hours to get them. The coffee was burnt and there was hair in the wrap. Apparently it was against their religious freedom to replace them. Two stars because they let me wear my mask.

Probably the best coffee shop in Dane County. It’s large & wide open has garage door type entryways. I had Laguna Brava it was 1000% better than Pike’s peak. The food is Nuevo & Eclectic, reminded me something out of Sonoma, California. Coffee is bit pricy but worth it. Tables outside around the building for summer enjoyment. Plenty of couch & table space too. Ideal for my business meetings. No more cluttered coffee shops. Staff are pleasant & accommodating.

I was excited to see a cute coffee shop in downtown Middleton when visiting from out of town, but was shocked by the lack of regard for COVID safety. Neither the barista nor kitchen staff were wearing masks, and a man who appeared to be the owner was not wearing a mask and did not even attempt to give customers space as he walked around the shop.

I came to this coffee shop about two weeks ago, and, as someone who is extremely allergic to cockroaches, I had a horrible allergic reaction from drinking their coffee, and more specifically, after eating one of their bakery products. I had to use my epipen after eating it, which only happens when Im exposed directly to soemthing that has come in contact with roaches, which is quite disgusting. On top of that, due to their no-mask policy, I also have contracted COVID. I would never recommend this business to anyone except the FDA and health inspector.

When I arrived at this coffee shop the sign read that it was a mask free zone. However when I entered without my mask on I was spit and coughed on by the employees who said they had recently tested positive for covid-19. Do not go to this coffee shop unless you want to be infected.

How is it that during a pandemic I walk in and see every single employee not wearing a mask? Pretty disgusting especially since anyone with a pre-existing condition just can not eat/drink here. I wish I could give 0 stars

As a disabled veteran I absolutely love Halbachs. I am unable to wear a mask due to a connected health issue. It feels great to enjoy a cup of joe without judging stares from unamerican Karens.

To be honest, Ive only ever ordered one thing here - cold brew. Thats because their cold brew is so good! I always order it with light ice to keep it from getting watery. The Middleton location is a little bit stark, in terms of design, which can cause the space to be a somewhat loud when more than a few patrons are using the space. So great coffee, but not always the best spot to do work that requires a high level of concentration.

I ordered a lemon bar and when I sat down to eat it, I noticed a hair in the bar. I went back to ask for another one and showed them the hair. They laughed at me, pulled the hair out, and said it was fine. For a bussiness just reopening after covid, this is very unsanitary and disappointing. Would NOT recommend.

I was on my way through town and decided to stop for a coffee and pastry Hellbach’s. I was shocked by the mask free zone sign on the window and could tell the staff were making snide remarks to each other under their breath about my decision to believe in science and wear a mask. Not only was the atmosphere uninviting but the food was awful. I could tell the beans they had used to brew my coffee were burnt and the pastry was bland. Just go to a different coffee shop.

Coffee: The roasts are often dark and over-extracted. If you like dark and heavy coffee, this place might be great for you. Their espresso-based beverages are mediocre. I’ve also been given a cappuccino, yet the staff thought it was a flat white. So, if you’re particular about your espresso/milk beverages, this place may not be for you.Food: The proportions are generally fair, but I haven’t yet to try anything to write home about.Atmosphere: They have a large space with beautiful walls and plenty of natural light. However, it’s readily apparent that the staff are trying to fill their space with what feels like dull, coffee-related memorabilia.Staff: Generally friendly. Seems to be a decent amount of turnover, so don’t get too attached to your new favorite barista.Conclusion: Awkwardly, yet well put together vibes with average-ish coffee.

Well designed interior with lots of space. Prices for both food and coffee are on the high side IMO. Food is very hit or miss depending on what you get. They have good bakery selection and egg based options but they fall short in the lunch options. Coffee is good but nearly 50% of the time my espresso drink order is off or messed up. It completely depends on which barista is making it...same order could taste four different ways depending on who makes it. Service was great the first three months they were open but recently it seems like the staff are untrained and aloof. Compared to Barriques, Helbachs has a better space and atmosphere but the food and espresso drinks are better priced and made at Barriques.

Beautiful place to study or enjoy a small bite. However service was incredibly slow on the day I stopped in.

This is my first time to Helbachs. The decor is beautiful and my coffee was delicious. It will be a great place to have a coffee with a friend or to do some work or studying. I am enjoy inspired cookie was fabulous.

Very disappointed that they refuse to follow the mask mandate, I would not be surprised if a large amount of covid cases are connected to this location. I will never understand how wearing a rectangle of fabric over your face became more upsetting to others than the thousands and thousands of lives lost over the past 6 months due to this very real pandemic. Helbachs makes my favorite roast of all the coffee places I have tried in Madison. Their flour-less monster cookies are to die for - but bring a friend to share them with, they are large and rich!
