This was my first time back in about 10-15 years or so. Intrigued by the offering of a french toast latte that i saw online, i had to get it and the drink did not disappoint! I can’t wait until general indoor dining is safe again so i can spend some time here with a coffee and a book.My favorite food from last time i was here was the giant lemon poppy muffins - do you still have those?

DO NOT BOTHER. Wow. What a disappointment. The cashier was not kind or friendly. The food was flavorless. The entire experience was wholeheartedly disappointing. It’s a business. Greet your customers! Be kind. Be friendly. I wanted to enjoy this experience so much and soup to nuts it was just an awful experience. Don’t bother going here. Supporting local businesses is so very important but this is one business that should just close up so that another business can move in. One that actually wants to make customers feel welcome.Addendum: I wish I would have read the negative reviews first. Every. Single. One. Has the same complaint. Rude staff. Flavorless food. Do the owners even care? How many of the same bad reviews does this place need to have before something is done. What a waste of time and money.

Rude staff member at front register. I was visiting with my 4 month old daughter and 4 year old autistic son. My son was very overexcited to be at the bookstore. The entire time at Atticus, my sister and I were trying to get him to calm down. My son tried to pull my debit card out as I was making my purchase and I quickly said do not remove the debit card from the machine until he tells you to. The cashier then said rudely and loudly I AM A WOMAN. I didn’t even comprehend what they said to me, or what they were referring to, because I was very busy helping my son deal with impulses due to his autism the entire time I was in the store. This staff member watched us while we were in the store, they knew what we were going through, and I even asked them if there was books for children with autism. There was a polite and professional way she could have said “I prefer to be called she.” I may have unintentionally made her uncomfortable by using the wrong pronoun but she clearly knew what I was going through with no regard for my feelings or my situation.

They really only have a breakfast sandwich and a couple of other items. They had a half a dozen different bakery items as well. The sandwich was ok, I dont know how you cant make a good breakfast sandwich. The sandwiches came out quick, but we were the only ones there. The time to help was extremely rude. 30 bucks for two sandwiches two coffees and a scone.

Lunch here was so good - the bread was fresh and delicious and the mushroom sandwich and pear salad were divine. Of course I ended up wandering over to the bookstore side and couldn’t resist making a few stationery purchases, since they have such an amazing selection of cards, notebooks, etc. If I return to New Haven, I will definitely come back! The only suggestion I would make is more vegan options on the menu.

Cook not wearing gloves and touching food with bare hands. Have always enjoyed my lunches at Atticus and I would have chosen 5 stars. BUT today I sat at the counter for the first time and could see the cooks preparing the food, one was not wearing gloves (the other was) and I watched him slide some eggs on a dish with his bare fingers, then grab a bunch of lettuce for a sandwich or a salad, handling bread and so on. Dont want to judge the man, but I dont know how much he washes his hands when cooking or after the bathroom, not to mention cross contamination. Grossed me out and turned me off....not sure if Ill return, HUGE bummer!!

The bookstore always surprises me with at least one new, random book that becomes a favorite: a book on existentialism, or grammar, or poetry. (I now assign the grammar book to my students--I am a university professor, not at Yale, but Im a Yale alumna.) What Im most excited about based on my most recent visit to Atticus is their new (I honestly dont know how new it is, but its new to me) approach to book recommendations. The staff members have shelves that give you a decent sense of what each persons interests are--though these tend to be broad in scope, its not like one person likes sci fi and one likes romance and one likes biography: based on what Ive seen the staff reads across genres a lot. The recommended books are interesting on their own, but whats really cool is that each staff member has selected a few mystery/take a chance on me books. These come wrapped in brown paper, and each has a very short teaser-description of the book. I think this is a brilliant idea. Its like opening a present every time I finish a book and get to start a new one. Im excited about my first book, which is now open, and my father is over the moon about his, which hes already finished. A+, Atticus. Will you ship me some random ones? Ill read anything at this point.

I was just in the Atticus bookstore and left without buying anything. The girl behind the back counter made continuous rounds through the store. I had picked up several wrapped books and was about to read the note on each of these recommended (mystery) books when she told me I wasnt allowed to read what they were about without buying them first!! And she wasnt kidding. She did offer to hold them for me while I shopped. I told not to bother as Im not buying any books that Im not allowed to read what theyre about. Great way to lose a sale and a customer. Is the owner aware she is losing customers for them??A Visitor from NYC

I loved this bookstore so much! A small but well curated collection, and my favorite part is the blind book dates. I bought a mystery book based on the staff recommendation and wound up reading a book I never would have picked up otherwise that is now one of my all time favorites! Such a fun experience! Friendly service, the food was pretty good for a Sunday brunch crowd. We had no issues, given how busy it was... There was a bit of a wait for our coffee, but considering there were never empty tables, and pretty quick turnaround (for the most part), everything was really good. Afterward, we shopped the bookstore side and liked the selection and organization..Make sure to check out the employees recommendations, if you want to stretch out from your comfort zone a little bit... they come wrapped in brown paper, so you just have to trust them. I thought that was a neat feature.

I was turned off from this place for a long time because of the display of very left-leaning, even radical literature in its window. I felt like they were catering to a particular customer who was not me. BUT, I went in with some buddies today for lunch, and their pork sandwich and mac and cheese were excellent. The selection of books was great too and much less extreme/partisan than it seemed last year and the year before. Good books, good service, will return.

Today was the first time I went into this coffee shop. It came highly recommended by a friend, who frequents this particular spot. However, my experience with the staff was awful!!! So much so that I walked out because of the rudeness of both the cashier and barista. If a customer doesn’t know the “norms” and way you’d like them to enter, sit, and order, perhaps a little customer service would help out and come a long way.

Quaint place, larger than it looks from outside. Because of the library like setting, its very quiet. But not unsettlingly so.The selection of food isnt too small, but not overwhelmingly large either. Not to mention the taste, 100%will visit again. But the only reason I cant rate it 5 stars is that the place they go to make and get food seems too open to the patrons, and the register is far too close to the seats for any conversation to be truly intimate. All other problems are minuscule in comparison and are remedied by other amenities.
