I love visiting this book store. Miss Jennifer introduced me to a few great authors and got me excited about reading physical books again. She is a wonderful story teller. I also bought beautiful fabric from Africa and gorgeous masks there. They are pillars of their community in so many ways. Their wealth of knowledge and history is astounding. I visit multiple times whenever in New Orleans. I consider them family friends. If only everyone were like them, what a world this could be!

This book store is like visiting your grandmothers home thats full of love and many hugs. The ladies that work here are simply Angels..it like stepping back in time to an era were respect for all in the black community was mandatory. I could sit and talk to them for hours. This ladies have so much soul, good vibes, and stories from their history. The selection here is mostly African American literature and pricing compared to large book stores are a bit higher...but the love and amazing energy you get from visiting this book store and those Angles are priceless..

Very well stocked, it was such a pleasure to visit this Black-centered book shop. I was able to find most of what I wanted but there’s one publication that’s quite old and mostly out of print that I haven’t been able to get my hands on. The woman working was so helpful, she’s ordering and shipping it out to me (I live along the east coast) at very little cost. A must stop if you are a patron of indie shops.

Definitely a Black experience you want to have in New Orleans. I found the books I was looking for and then some. The owner chatted me up and had me rollin’ and quoting Mr. Baldwin. She is a whole mood! I look forward to stopping in during my next visit to this historical city.

First time visiting with a friend in this warm bookstore. Outside was a shelf of previously used books with a promotion of filling your bag up with them for $5.00. Upon entering, Community Book Center was well lit surrounded by warm color tones. The book selection is mainly African-American, and could use more books. The selection was very diverse and inclusive was all genres. This bookstore also sells clothing and bags. I will return here in the future!

We visited this bookstore on our last day in New Orleans. I purchased a couple of packets of dirty rice as souvenirs for my loved ones. Mama Jennifer was very down to earth and real! We enjoyed having a conversation with her about life and worldly people. We mentioned that Malik was our tour guide and we all praised him for his hard work and how awesome he mentioned Mama Jennifer was. We also mentioned that we just came from B Mike’s studio and we sang his praises together too. It’s so coincidental that she mentioned Malik and B Mike were there earlier that day! We didn’t plan on visiting this business, but had to cancel our massage so this was a great treat! The bookstore has an amazing collection of black books and gifts. Mama Jennifer mentioned she thought she knew us and that made us feel right at home! I would recommend everyone visit this black owned business in New Orleans for a chat with Mama Jennifer and some insightful souvenirs.

This small in space, but large in quality and quantity bookstore exceeds all expectations. Been there several times and have never been disappointed. From kids books to paintings, from art work to clothing theyve got it. A definite Afrocentric flair embodies the surroundings. You can feel it when you walk through the door. Authors and book signings also grace this space. One of the best kept secrets in the City, but not in literary circles. Give them a visit and youll be as impressed as I always am.

An institution in the New Orleans Black community for almost 40 years. This is the best place in the city to find self-published books my Black writers and a one stop shop for fabric, art, clothing and souvenirs created by local Black artisans. The community events they hold are a great way to get connected with the Black community in New Orleans and the elders who run the place, Mama Vera and Mama Jennifer, are fonts of community knowledge and no nonsense wisdom.
