Had a Homemade Chicken Parmigiana. The cheese and sauce were both good.Inside it looks like an extensive cheese shop.I ordered it to-go via their website, under the header Specials of the Month - Entrees to go. There it states All entrees served cold, but I didnt notice that, and the staff ask me if I actually wanted it hot, and offered to give me a separate hot entree. I declined since I was fine with warming it at home, but appreciated that they offered this.
Heard this place had one the best parm (eggplant & chicken) and meatball sandwiches so decided to try one of them. line was not long and servers were pretty cheerful. got the meatball sandwich. bread was a bit stale though meatballs were pretty good. I guess sandwich would have been better if bought from the shop instead of the stall during the San Gennaro festival. Will certainly make a trip back to try the parm sandwiches
We bought four Cannolis from the stand attached to the Alleva store. It was 2 Cannoli for $5 - we thought that was a bit too expensive for what we received. The Cannoli itself was slightly dry, while the ricotta was nice - but it could have been more fresh and smooth.I really enjoyed the flavour, which was heavy on the cinnamon in a good way. The general vibe in the area makes me want to give five stars, but unfortunately the Cannoli didnt live up to its environment.
Oh my goodness, I ordered the meatball sandwich and it was pure bliss. The meatballs melt in your mouth, the sauce ratio is perfect, and it is a huge portion. Added fresh mozzarella which took it right over the edge. Classic Italian deli that is making pure joy. Also got the Manhattan special espresso soda to try and loved it!
I didnt like this place. The lady by the counter looked like she was in a bad mood as she was mumbling stuff under her breath. My boyfriend got himself a sandwich which he did like. And the only saving grace is the guy who made the sandwich was helpful.I want to try the cannoli and arancini next time.
Absolutely gobsmacked. I live on Tompkins Sq Park and got the San Gennaro delivered with Mozzarella sticks. This is the Italian sandwich spot youve been looking for. Everything you can tell has an in house touch and warmth and is just perfect blend, ingredient amount, and quite frankly, tasting. Ive lived here four years now, and have never had back to back lunch orders from the same place. Until this place. Lifelong patron now.
The best Italian Deli in lowerManhattenHands down....try it,, youll thank me latter..
They did an asap online order in a flash. Great salamis, good bread. Wish there was more mozz on the San Gennaro. Other than that minor qualm its a perfect sandwich to take away for a picnic.
We stopped in to try their delicious mozzarella. Since we wanted to eat something right there we got the mozzarella sticks and the risotto balls. The balls were just ok. We didnt love that they had to heat everything in the microwave even though it was in a heating station, though I get its mostly a cold cheese shop. The mozzarella sticks are worth coming back for though. I wish I had tried the arancini.
Great place. 100+ years in business!
I have ordered from here and loved it. This time I was extremely disappointed due to the fact that the $14 sandwich I ordered was extremely skimpy in every way. Prosciutto balls were great as always.
Very professional, Very knowledgeable, Very friendly, when it comes to Quality .... They are the Big Cheese !
I usually get fresh mozzarella, they showed me fresh mozzarella, they went in the back and gave me week old mozzarella, what a scam, they use to be good not anymore ! to bad!!
2 words, Prosciutto & Ricotta Balls!!
OG Little Italy best Arancinis, cheese and Prosciutto
**Ordered takeout during COVID pandemicFood*San Gennaro (hot capicola, soppressata, smoked mozzarella, roasted peppers & balsamic vinaigrette) - good
Good food, very nice people prizes are reasonable. Will definitely go back. I recommend it to everyone.
I want to start off by saying I have never been to a place that had better sandwiches than Alleva Dairy. The food is always made fresh, and its so filling. The staff are some of the nicest people I ever met. If you havent eaten here I highly recommend it. You wont regret it.
I seriously love Alleva Dairy! This is the best Italian shop I have ever been to the last 10 years I have been living in Manhattan. Ive tried many others and they just cant compare to Alleva Dairy. They offer most delicious italian specialties and I personally think have the best sandwiches in Manhattan. My go to is the Italian sub. Delicious and they are always generous! Family owned and operated you are always greeted and made to feel at home with great family Hospitality
An interesting way to be treated. Waiting in line to buy something to support local small businesses but you ignore me and help the two white Americans with there 5$ mozzarella sticks. Hope your business can survive customer service like that.
What a shame that they give new customers a discount and ignore their faithful patrons from the neighborhood who have been shopping here for 30+ years. (Me)Not sure whats going on with the new owners.Bring back the good sausages Alleva!
My wife spotted a family eating sandwiches on a bench on the sidewalk, adjacent to a small outdoor cannoli stand. She said, you need one of those, gesturing at the sandwiches. The cannoli stand was in front of Alleva Dairy. I went in and ordered the San Gennaro sandwich, and the rest is history. I seriously loved the sandwich and the whole vibe of the place. Its like a walk back in time. Next time Im in NYC I will make it a point to go here again. Oh and I grabbed a sandwich the next day when I was about to leave the city.
Best Italian fare in the city.Wouldnt buy mozzarella or ricotta (both MADE THERE) anywhere else. Longstanding purveyors, the last of Little Italy, along with the best pasta store - Piemonte - next door.
Real Italian delicates
Very cool to see on our tour of NYC. YOU MUST GET A FRIED CHEESE BALL with marinara sauce. And if youre lucky, some locals will be sitting outside and can tell you stories of living in Little Italy back in the day. That was the Best part of our trip.
Awesome old school Italian deli, great sandwiches here.
Awesome for catering! Ordered a charcuterie. Looked beautiful and tasted even better. Great friendly staff. Accommodated my budget. Would order again and highly recommend!!
Very tasty and fresh ingredients sold here!
Still the best smoked mozzarella in all of NY
The best cheese shop, with the most authentic ubriaco (wine induced) cheese and freshest truffle cheese in all of Manhattan!
Great subs... happy staff... but you pay for the nostalgia
Grear selection of cheeses, olives and even some delicious hot food. The staff is also very nice and accommodating!!
Awesome cheese and sausage. Very friendly helpful staff.
I dont know where the haters come from. I am always treated great. They give you a little taste of the different cheeses so you can pick what you like. The Italian combo is knock out fantastic
From the Trenton, NJ area. I take my 11-year old (who loves grated cheese) all the way to Mulberry for cheese at Alleva. The Tony Danza sandwich is awesome as well. I encourage you to make the trip or stop in the next time you are on Mulberry Street.
Seen in 2007 movie the brave one with Jodie Foster and Terrence Howard.
Me and my wife went on a trip to New York City where we stopped at one of the oldest cheese stores in the city. I was excited at first glance I noticed the place is very clean thats a plus in my book but I was very disappointed, The selection of cheese that they had was very small to my amazement. For it being one of the oldest cheese stores it is okay but it also could have more potential to it. My wife made a comment to me on the way out she said they had more cookies than they had cheese lol if that isnt backwards I dont know what is. clean neat but not so many options in my view.
Ive been going here to buy deli meats and mozzarella since the 80s...family own and I believe it still is...regardless, their service is courteous and friendly...their Italian cold cuts are fresh and always thinly sliced...not to mention a great selection of Italian goods for purchase..I always stop here when in the area..
We went here specifically bc of the rave reviews of the fresh mozzarella. I ordered a mozzarella stick and was disappointed to see the guy pop it in the microwave before he gave it to me. It was fine, but the breading tasted a bit like the oil was old and it was super thick. My husband got some of the gelati from outside the store and thought it was very good.
I always buy prosciutto here, it is so good! I tried the takeaway meet & eggplant and sadly it had a really weird taste (maybe from sitting there for a long time/maybe it wasnt completely fresh?), it had a pool of tomato sauce too... kind of grossed me out and had to throw it away.
Beautiful Italian food to go. Lovely Mozzarella and the best meatballs in the city. Generous portions for the price.
Alleva is an institution as it is one of the oldest cheese shops in America. Their sandwiches are massive and insanely delicous. The staff is helpful and friendly and even offered to give me an umbrella when it started to rain. If you are looking for lunch with enough leftovers to eat for dinner, this is the place.
While on a walking tour of Little Italy, we stopped in to Alleva Dairy to grab a quick bite. The Arancini was definitely the best part of the tour, let alone our trip to NYC. I could have spent the rest of the tour there. Will most certainly make another stop there before heading back home to Ohio!!
Great service. Decent sandwiches. Everyone else I was with thought the sandwiches were spectacular but maybe it was because they had the Italian and I had the turkey. Next time I want to try the hot food.
Amazing service and food. We loved the speck and mozzarella. Well worth the trek to Little Italy
Best place to grab a proper sandwich in Little Italy.
The highlight of my trip to China town and little Italy was this cheese shop! There is a very jolly man there that engaged my conversation and sent me up the street to a locally known Chinese women who has a tiny hole in the wall where she and another lady make sausage dumplings at 5 for $1.25, except both times I ordered them she gave me 7! The cheese man makes killer mozzarella sticks!
Good ice cream, but they stole me
Love the prepped food. Always delicious and filling, owners and workers are super nice too
Just go and youll be soon eating the best Italian food. Not a restaurant but make your sandwich
Great! Very helpful, cant wait to dig into my goodies!
Great sandwiches and staff with the added bonus of seeing Tony Danza in the shop from time to time. He’s the boss.
I used to love this place. One sandwich every week. I always order the same. Italian combo, mozzarella instead of provolone, balsamic vinegar.About 3 months ago I started noticing that they were either not putting in provolone or not putting in balsamic vinegar. So I started tracking. In the last 3 months, they screwed up 7 of the last 8 sandwiches.Todays sandwich did have either.Im done.never going back there again.
Four Stars cause its part of the tourist walk, expensive, but good. I had an Italian sub, $14, it was good but not Katzs pastrami good. Got some fresh mozzarella and a bag of tarllia (Italian pretzels). Good but not cheap. I like the place, when Im in Little Italy.
Rustic cheese and cured meats. Great place for an authentic Italian sandwich
Terrible terrible customer service. We walk in at 6:40 and he says we are closed, when it fact they close at 7. We said we just want to buy ricotta and he said ok thats fine. And then as we walk back to the counter he said F**king customers. This is unacceptable. We had small children with us and the place wasnt even closed. The other workers tried to say it wasnt towards you yet we were the only ones there. We will NEVER come back. All the years coming here and never again will we come back. There are other places that are equally as good, if not better down the street.
The best and only one in Little Italy
Their Italian sandwich is one of the best deli sandwiches youll find in the neighborhood. Its also a great spot to pick up fresh mozzarella, olives, sundried tomatoes, etc. The rice balls here are worth trying if youve never had them before. Also, be sure to walk next door and get fresh pasta from Piemonte.
Very professional staff, a great help.
So whomever does not know generally speaking you pay between $12 to $16 for a sandwich. This location was recommend by my tour guide and I have to say no regrets whatsoever. The american and italian sandwich was meant to feed 3 people unless you can eat than 2 people. The meat is fresh and delivered from Italy. The gentleman who was a Baez fan was welcoming and funny. They also sell panini and gelato and some desserts. They do not have a restroom to use and there are only a few benches in front to sit down. It gets pretty busy around there but definetly will go back.
My girlfriend just brought home takeout from this shop. Shells, with chickpeas and tomato. The entree has zero flavor and I mean ZERO! There was supposed to be garlic and its funny that its a cheese shop and the dish had no cheese at all.I also got an arancini which was super dry, no good.Sorry, but the worst Italian Ive eaten in a very long time.I wont be back. Im shocked at your high reviews??
The most amazing cannoli !! Prior to having theirs, I thought I didnt like cannoli. Upon returning to Florida its all I can think about. Cant wait to return ...its perfection ❤️
I went to Alleva with my wife about a year and four months ago. Great service! I will be back!
I work a couple of blocks away and I can tell you that Alleva is the perfect place to drop in for a hero with your choice of meat and cheese. Sweet Capicola and Mozzarella today, but the place is a feast for the eyes as well; smoked aged mozzarella, bresaola, prosciutto... Beautiful. Despite the high-end inventory, the place is unpretentious, classic and doesnt get too fancy with putting thinly-sliced deliciousness of your choice onto a hero roll for you.
They are so nice. Awesome cheeses.
Nice Old School Italian Dairy Store. Good hard and fresh cheeses.
Great Italian sandwiches here!
I was at the feast and was ordering my food at stand and saw Mr.Danza working very hard the food was excellent staff was so friendly !!!
The cheese and the atmosphere was great and appealing to me and my wife, but a man that was there was very uncaring and on go when we had questions for him overhearing us like we were not there I think they call him dean Daniel idk thats what the workers was calling him other than that great place
Go see joe morone nicest guy in the world.
Love there sweets good service and fresh
Im back to Montréal and dream again and again of the chees cake with almond wraping around this amazing desert, why i didn t buy a box of 6.. when i return in New-York, it will be one of my destinantion for sur!
I entered the shop where a group of tourists was waiting for their sandwich, as they seemed to have been there for a while, I asked politely the owner how long it would take for me to get my takeaway food if I ordered it now. The answer was a passive agressive The time it takes then turned to his colleague to make fun of me in a rude fashion and in front of my face.I was so exceeded in rage that I decided to leave the store speachless. As soon as I exited I heard a Ok what do you want?, followed by insults as I was already closing the door. This shop is dependent on tourists and to be honest the food has nothing to feel so pretentious about, very basic and I shouldn’t have to feel like I’m going to throw hands with the cashier when ordering a sandwich. This is ridiculous in an area where there’s so many other places to go to. Ciao.
Tried to stop by, as I just moved to the area. Not sure Ill be coming in again. Stopped by just before 6:45 (they closed at 7PM that day). Was met at the door by a man who told me that theyre closed. I mentioned the 7 PM closing time, and asked if the hours changed and he said they close at 7, but they arent accepting any new customers. I asked whens the latest they are taking new customers (as there were already customers in the store, also, so I know for next time, if I were to come back another day), and he said to take up your questions with management. I get that people have bad days, but the way he spoke to me was in such a manner that I was being a jerk for trying to do business with them. It costs nothing to be courteous and polite.
Love the Italian combo. All of the sandwiches are amazing and huge. Theyre a steal for $10.
Oldest cheese shop in the USA, they make the BEST SMOKED MOZZARELLA anywhere. Friendly staff, part owner (see him there often) Tony Danza.
Great imported Cheeses from Italy also owned and run by Tony Danza
The best canoli Ive had in Little Italy so far.
Sandwiches are enormous, staff is super friendly, and if youre lucky, you may just see a star.Grab a canoli, you know you want one
Was on a Little Italy tour and stopped here for a taste of their cheese. We got an order of Mozzarella sticks and they were made with fabulous fresh Mozz. cheese. I even saw Tony Danza behind the counter.....was too starstruck to say hello....tried to sneak picture, but blurry :) My daughter got a cannoli from outside and it was also great!
Delicious food. Friendly staff.
Horrible service refuse to do what is asked.Openly will argue .Do not recommend anyone visits.
The best supersata, cheese, red sauce ......... Love this place !!!
This is the best place to buy authentic Italian meat and cheese. Felt like living in Italy
Delicious mozzarella sticks.
2 words, Italian Sandwich. The best decision Ive ever made.
Phenomenal. Great service. Great selection.
If you are in search of fresh Italian cheese, look no further: freshly made mozzarella and/or basket cheese served to you with a smile
