Celebrated our 1 year anniversary here. Walking through the front upstairs threw us off when they opened up the back door to the basement. Very very extremely intimate with the low lighting and candles randomly scattered around. The service was excellent. The menu was in depth and has something for everyone BUT I would recommend the tasting menu. For $65 you get to try TEN items off the menu and some of those items are full sized. We tried the tuna tar tar, the meat skewers (they were cooked perfectly), fried duck, the spicy ramen, and other dishes. Each dish was unique and the tastes took us for a ride. Match with a nice bottle of sake and finished off with mochies for desert……. It’s gonna be hard to top this place for our next year anniversary.

Fantastic hidden coffee, dining, & drinks gem in Gayborhood/Midtown Village neighbourhood in Center City. Street level hip coffee (day) & cocktail (night) bar with library/private lounge vibe. Down a flight of clandestine stairs lies expansive underground Japanese izakaya with extensive robatayaki menu. Open kitchen with bar seating. Copious seafood, fancy craft cocktails, knowledgeable servers to explain the large menu. A la carte-style or tasting menu-style dining options. $$-$$$ depending on menu choices. Reservations a must.

To be honest, I wasn’t expecting much but I was proven wrong. I went with the 10-selection chef’s tasting menu, and the majority of items were great.Items I highly recommend: duck scrapple bao, miso eggplant and short rib from the robatayaki section, broiled sea bass, and black cod fried rice. The latter two items were huge portions! My only gripe is with the sushi. The fish was OK quality, the sashimi slices were thin, and the rolls were largely rice.Service was attentive and friendly. Definitely sit at the sushi bar if you get the chance!

Amazing atmosphere, great service, and even better food. You want to try lots of small things and don’t skip the sushi. It would be a waste to spend too much time in the left side of the menu because the skewers and sushi truly shine. That being said, be prepared for a bill that matches the taste. Treat yourself and do it right.

We went to this restaurant twice in the span of 3 days for dinner, and got the chefs tasting menu both times. The food was definitely amazing, but the service is really what brings the experience down in my opinion. We sat at the sushi bar once, and at a table the second time. I had to constantly flag down the waiter/waitress to refill my drink over both days. Secondly, with the chefs tasting menu they are constantly bringing dishes as well as taking dishes away from anything you finished (which is totally fine), but highly confusing cause I was getting things taken and removed by multiple different people, so when I wanted to request something it was always the wrong person. It also felt very chaotic. Its pretty tight and intimate in the restaurant, so when you have 10+ dishes being given and taken by multiple different people it can get a bit annoying trying to constantly move out of the way. Also on the chefs tasting menu when we ordered some of the premium items they gave us an extra charge for those dishes which we were unaware of as it was not indicated on the menu as being premium, nor did the waiter tell us about the extra charges until we got the bill. All in all the food was delicious but the service was not nearly up to par with what I would expect for what we paid.

My Fiancee and I decided to make this our first foray into the upscale dining world for our birthdays in 2021. Double Knot is hard to miss at first. It has a small sign located outaide the outdoor dining for Sampan once you see the sign simply enter the door and go to the back right corner. We decided to do the Chefs Choice Special for $65 (10 courses plus Mochi for desert). Since we both have adventurous palats, we left it to the Chefs choice. You do have the option of select items from the menu as well, you are also welcome to upgrade specific selections to include premium items (such as NY Strip or Lobster) fir an additional $5 per choice.Everything, and I mean EVERYTHING, we had was phenomenal. Each if the first 8 courses are perfect for splitting between a couple. Then last 2 courses are the main entreés, and we were so filled up thT we took a doggie bag home.(Final courses shown in photos)For drinks, we each chose select cocktails. I had The Double Knot, the signature cocktail (or had 3 to be precise). The flavor is incredible. The glass is smoked first with wood from aged Makers Mark barrels leaving a smoky flavor in every sip of the drink. My fiancee enjoyed The Love Knot (a sweeter cocktail in a flute) as well as 2 of the Jungle Bird Slip. Everything was outstanding and worth the price tag.Our server for the night was Hazel, they were absolutely incredible. They were attentive, informative, and extremely warm all night. We had several plates swapped out for fresh plates throughout the knight. They were incredibly personable, and provided descriptions for everything so that we could make an informed decision. The restaurant is in the basement, and is primarily lit by candles. If you are looking for a beautiful, Japenese inspired, date night look no further.Just a heads up, if you are looking for a full bottle of Sake, be prepared to pay! (Absolutely worth it though).

Our group decided to try Double Knot as we’ve frequented Sampan with a similar menu and style. Our visit was extremely disappointing. From the minute we arrived, we were presented with terrible service. We had a reservation and came on time but had to wait 15 minutes just to be seated as there was only one person running the host stand with multiple groups waiting to be seated. The restaurant was full when we arrived. We placed our order as soon as we arrived and there was items that after 2 hours still had not arrived. Meanwhile, there were guests who arrived later than us but received all of their items at a timely manner. We had to request water refills three times as we had empty cups for more than 30 minutes. In regards to the food, it was okay but in my opinion did not grant the prices they were sold for. Two of the guest in our group ordered Chilean sea bass and after 2 hours only received 1 plate with a BURNED black sea bass covered in greens. We constantly received updates about our food regarding it being “plated” but still after 20 minutes those plates had not shown up. Service was not good and after providing feedback about the long wait for our order they tried to excuse it with the way the restaurant serves out orders. I want to note that Sampan next door has the same free flow plating style but we’ve never had to wait incredibly long times. Will not be returning and hopefully the improve their service for future customers.

Disappointed Ordered the tasting menu by the waiters recommendation. It was awful. You do not get to pick the food. It comes out too fast and it is not good. My home town sushi place is better. The sushi was almond size, sea bass had no taste, they served fried chicken and fried pork? 2 fried options, who thought that was a good idea? I spent $115 on this meal plus parking a total waste. It’s all hype.

Fantastic experience from start to finish at Double Knot. The staff couldn’t have been more wonderful. When we arrived for our 7:30 reservation we had to wait around for a little while, and were then informed that the last party at our table was taking longer than expected. One of the supervisors grabbed us some waters while we waited and also offered to have some dishes sent to our table free of charge which was so kind (we waited less than 20 minutes).Once seated, we met our server (who I believe was named Clint?) whom was wonderful. Based on his suggestion we decided to go with the blind tasting menu. I cannot recommend this enough, it was such a unique experience and the food was insanely delicious. My wife also has a severe peanut and tree nut allergy which we informed our server of, and he was so wonderful about it and made sure to talk through everything with the chef.Definitely a 10/10 experience all round.

Time:Aug. 28 2020, Late night around 10:30 PMRight now during COVID Sampan & Double Knot are doing a joint outdoor dining menu, so its a great time if you were like me and wanted to try out both restaurants.Atmosphere:The outdoor seating was great. Large Kirin Ichiban umbrellas cover each table and the entire street was blocked off from cars due to all the outdoor dining in that part of town. I thought that the chairs and tables provided were good enough.Service:Excellent service! Everyone was friendly and respected personal space. Everyone had face masks on and there was minimal contact with the employees. They were even kind enough to let me use their hand sanitizer since I forgot my own. The hostesses answered my questions professionally and were knowledgeable about the menu.Food:So for food, Ill try to separate the reviews for the food to their respective restaurants.Crispy Rock Shrimp - 5/5This was the best part of the whole order. The flavor of the sauce, the crispiness of the shrimp, and the pickled raddish all make this dish shine. The chili aioli in the sauce adds a kick of flavor without making the dish too spicy, if you cant handle spice I wouldnt worry about this dish, its definitely tolerable. I would order this again if I came back to Double Knot.Duck Scrapple Bao - 3/5The bao was nice a fluffy, which I personally like. The duck tasted okay. It was fried pretty nicely though. Was a pretty average dish, I would opt to order one of their other baos if I chose to come back here again.Final Verdict:Double Knot is making some good food. I definitely want to come back to try their other baos. Their happy hour menu looks appetizing, so expect another visit from me!

Wish I could give this place 0 stars. Coming from a restaurant enthusiast, this was the worst service I ever received. Honestly, don’t know where to start. I have been going to Sampan for years and when they separated from Double-Knot, I always planned to consistently support both. Sampan is a 5 star restaurant with amazing service. Double knot is the opposite. Our group came on time, yet had to wait 15 mins to get seated. They were understaffed, so I didn’t mind or really fuss about that. The problem is we waited over 2 hours for our food to come out…and even then there were still missing plates. We we’re terribly disappointed especially because we anticipated good food and service. The sea bass came out charcoal black and they tried to cover it with the green leafy veggies. I had to ask for water refill on three separate occasions. Just horrible! Will never be back. They will never be half as good as sampan.

This place has some decent tasting vegetarian as well as non-vegetarian food but nothing that justifies the amount that they charge for it. Our server recommended the robotayaki and so we ordered all vegetarian ones. The maitake mushroom robotayaki tasted good but boy, was it overpriced? Never have I paid $12 for 3 small pieces of mushroom. Absolutely not worth it. The eggplant and scallions were decent but the asparagus one was bland. We liked the wild mushroom gyoza too.I definitely understand the idea behind modern Japanese cuisine but getting 10-11 regular sized tofu pieces for a dish costing $12 is not going to make us feel like it is worth our money. There is potential but they need to rework their portion sizes.

The food is good. The speed of service is good. The ambience is good. The problem is that the staff is impossible. The waitress, messed up our order, even being given a lost. First off, she took my friends phone who had made a list specifically for her and he told her which list to use. First off she shouldve written it down herself but she takes his phone. Weird. Second, he specified which list was for her and it was clear which list was for her and which was for us. She still used both lists. Wrong move. We corrected her and she said well figure it out. Wrong move. She comes back and says that were the ones who messed up by giving her two lists which one, we specified which one was for her and on top of that, she shouldve done her job and written it down herself. Then she tells us that its ok if we eat the food we didnt order. But when the check comes back I get charged for food I didnt order and was a mistake by an incompetent waitress. I wouldnt name names but the restaurants experience would be much better if I didnt have to deal with a $60+ upcharge from an incompetent and insufferable waitress who then had the gall to say it wasnt her fault. I wouldnt name names but Andrea needs to be fired. If it werent for her the restaurant wouldve been good. Just because of her absolute lack of professionalism, basic smarts, and competency its become a restaurant that I dont ever want to see again.

*RECOMMEND*If you want a nice, upscale place with good quality Japanese, Asian fusion food, this place is for you. This two story restaurant consists of a cafe seating area upstairs and a dining room/bar seating area downstair. Unfortunately bar seating is unavailable during this time, however, the dining room experience is just as pleasant. The decoration, layout, and vibe of the restaurant is comparable to an izayaka, but a bit more upscale. The dimly lit dining room ambiance is definitely great for a date or a cool hangout place to grab a drink and eat. The menu is quite extensive with lots of options. There is a chefs choice option where you get one dish from each of the 10 categories for $60 per person. However, we decided to get a la carte so we are not limited to just one dish per category. They have many premier meat and fish selection that you would not see often at a standard Japanese restaurant such as Kobe and Wagyu beef and hirame. They also have fresh wasabi!!! The quality of the food was definitely there. Highly recommend making a reservation in advance and let them know any dietary restrictions because not all of the items on the menu have descriptions underneath them.*DINNER*- fresh wasabi - first time trying it and it was good, a bit sweet and not too pungent- Tuna Tartar: tuna was very fresh, the chili oil was flavorful but a bit too salty- Japanese Fried Chicken: lightly crispy and has a good chew. I like the mayoit came with, a bit tart. A bit lacking in seasoning, prefer a bit more- Unagi Donburi - the eel and the sauce on it was done really well, I really like the light but not too overwhelming umami and sweetness. It came with a good amount of rice, maybe a bit too much- Robatayaki - Kobe Beef - tender and soft, not too chewy and has a good char- Robatayaki - Scallop - soft and fresh, taste like any other scallops Ive had- A-5 kobe Sashimi - *GET THIS* Literally melted in my mouth- Yellowtail Specialty Sashimi - fresh yellowtail works so well in the citrusy ponzu sauce- Double Knot Big Eye Tuna Roll - Shrimp tempura on the inside and tuna on top. Pretty standard sushi roll- Mochi ice cream (matcha, lychee, vanilla chocolate chip) - Vanilla chocolate chip one was my favorite followed by matcha and lychee. Good dessert to end with*VERDICT*Overall it was a really nice experience and the food was pretty good. I would go back again

My husband and I went for our 10th anniversary. It was our first visit to Double Knot. We arrived early with the hopes of grabbing a drink at the bar before dinner, no luck, so we checked in with the hostess and she was able to seat us (almost 45 minutes before our reservation) which was great and unexpected! From check in, we were lead to the stairs to the basement and greeted at the bottom of the stairs by another host who escorted us to our table. The ambiance in the basement was perfect! Dimly lit with candles, stone walls, visible sushi bar where the chefs were feverishly cranking out sushi and sashimi. We were seated at a corner table(great for watching). A server arrived to give us water, and shortly thereafter Jordan arrived to explain the menu and how the chef’s tasting menu works. We of course had done our research before we arrived, but were surprised that the chef’s tasting menu is a shared experience. Meaning the table must choose the same 10 items to share. No big deal, small redirect. We started with edamame, delish. And a perfectly petite espresso martini that was everything I wanted it to be. We selected Pork belly and quail robotayaki. Amazing. Could have reordered both. Next we had octopus carpaccio and the salmon special sushi. These two were out least favorite, but still delicious. We enjoyed the A-5 Kobe beef(like butter), baked crab and scallop dish, Japanese fried chicken, and for entrees…the duck, brussels(unbelievably good), and the whole roasted Dorade.Never once were our glasses empty, the service was impeccable. Our share plates were changed 3 times through the meal, the food runners explained every dish and even took time to share recommendations. Jordan was personable and pleasant even while busy on a Friday night. We finished the meal with chocolate chip and matcha mochi’s. 10/10. Highly recommended.

An outstanding dining experience had during our recent visit to Double Knot. The service was first-rate, from the door staff, the food runners, busser and server (Dana). Bartender was a tad surly and didnt even say thank you when I came from our table to tip him extra for the mocktails he created for The Kid and I.The food was superb- the meats (ribeye, Kobe, lamb) tender and flavorful, with hints of smoke from the grill (The Kid ordered the quail twice); The Missus (bless er) and I did the same with the foie gras, as it was a relevatory gastronomic event (I have eaten way more than my fair share of foie gras, I must confess). We ordered the truffled scallop, but the plain ol scallop came. Meh. However, when we mentioned the scallop mix-up, Dana brought us the truffled scallop free of charge. And it was absolutely delightful. The place was as busy as the Covid regulations would allow, and the bathrooms were clean, gender-neutral and very interesting. (Go to see what I mean.)All in all, the three of us were completely enchanted by the ambience, the service and the food. Our next trip to Philadelphia will definitely include a trip to Double Knot.

Doubleknot is surely a high-end treat when it comes to evening dining. I have heard that the lunch and happy hour options are very well priced (great value). It honestly takes an experienced diner to build a balanced dinner... so my fiance and I ordered the chefs tasting. Our service was excellent. The food came out fast, but we were warned that it would be served as it was finished, and our server slowed the pace after 3 dishes came out together. I enjoy a good meal and am not a food critic; I thought everything was delicious. The tuna tar-tar kicked butt... the beef skewers were delicious. A $200 dinner for two, including cocktails... great when you are willing to pay for a real treat.

Everything was delicious! My favorites were the toro scallion roll, tuna rice cracker, and duck bibimbap. The broiled seabass was also very good, but much smaller than expected for an entree. Which worked out well for me, since we ordered so many appetizers.

The vibe was elite. Blind tasting was incredible. Also, just amazingly priced. Loved the rib eye robotayaki, the duck bao, and the yellowtail specialty sashimi. But honestly everything was top notch, and we were stuffed by the end. Absolutely will be coming back soon.

Was recommended Double Knot by a friend who said I absolutely must eat here. I wanted to love this restaurant but the food and service was quite disappointing. Booked a table in advance, upon arrival (and we arrived 5 mins late due to transportation issues but called ahead to let them know), we were told to wait and then later informed no table was available but we could sit at the sushi bar.Ok fine, it was getting late so we agreed.Server was quite busy running around and also, rather worryingly, he was sneezing and sniffling under his mask, not great in Covid times. Should a person be working if they’re sick? The server was distracted whilst pouring water and a lot of it ended up on the table. Since they didn’t wipe it, I cleaned it up with my own napkin and asked for a new dry one to replace it. I understand it was busy but it never came. I ended up asking someone else instead. The yuzu mocktails were delicious, no faults there.Robotoyaki skewers were the standout items we ate, came our beautifully charred and piping hot though one skewer was missing and was not brought out until we asked for it.The other dishes were not so successful and the most annoying thing was all the food came out lukewarm?! We had the jumbo scallops, black cod fried rice, crispy Brussels sprouts and beef dumplings. The first three dishes tasted great but had temperature issues. The scallops were lightly seared and barely cooked. Not warm to the touch. Luckily we like to eat sashimi…Biggest gripe were the beef dumplings which were definitely not cooked correctly. I bit into the dumpling and not only was the centre lukewarm but the dumpling skin was still raw! The gluten strands were still stretching in the dough! I alerted the server who was apologetic and commented how ‘gross’ that was and said they would bring a replacement. At least 20 mins passed, all the other dishes were finished and they came by to clear the plates asking if the second round of dumplings were better. I advised we never received the replacement. The server said they would check again and then a few minutes later, the second round of dumplings showed up. The broth poured over the dumplings was hot but yet again, same issue. Raw dumpling skin and cold filling!Chef - please take this dish off the menu if it’s not being executed correctly. Not sure what your process is but dumplings need to be cooked immediately after folding or must be cooked from frozen. If you leave pre-folded dumplings in the fridge or at room temperature, the skins absorb moisture which causes that gooey sticky skin and that issue is only worsened by not being cooked long enough. (Sorry if you find this harsh but I’ve folded and cooked dumplings with my family all my life and it’s 101 of dumpling cookery). The server apologised again and removed the dumplings from the bill as well as our drinks which was a nice gesture but we left feeling very deflated by the experience after the restaurant was hyped up to us by multiple people. I’m hoping you were just having an off night, your food has the potential to be great if the temperature issue is fixed because the flavours you’re working with are wonderful.

The vibe is great. Just the food is not really Japanese, especially the way they make the karaage.

Ate in the upstairs area and it was very cozy. The metal folding chairs are a real strain for my back though haha. Everything was incredible. Our favorites being the short rib, ribeye, swordfish, and edamame.

Nigiri was too thin slice of fish. Line cook turned off his sushi fridge too early and had water drop on the protein. I told him his case might be turned off accidentally.... he said he was just getting ready to close. Smh

Made reservations for the basement sushi experience and was not disappointed. We had the chef’s tasting menu, which was incredible and gave us the chance to experience a lot of foods we wouldn’t have otherwise. The cocktails were also really delicious. Service was the best I’ve had (up there with Zahav). The melting wax candles were lovely and the atmosphere was fun, being able to watch the busy chefs behind the counter.

A lovely little gem in Philly with excellent food and the most pleasant customer service you could ever ask for! As for the taste of the food ordered; it was magnificent, from the mocktail drink to the appetizer tuna Rice cracker& Duck Scrapple Bao Bun and finally the Entree of Entrees. Which is served in a cast iron skillet that will get your mouth watering; “The Duck Entree.” Ending the night with a complimentary original Mochi Ice cream! Attached, are the enticing images of the dishes and the receipt! I strongly with all my confidence recommend this lovely spot for your next outing.

Double knot is the place to go when friends come in from out of town. The lower level is relaxed (especially compared to the bar level which you have to walk through to get there.) This is really a place to share a bunch of things. Though the ideal number of people to eat with is 3-4, DK can accommodate much bigger groups which is nice and rare for good restaurants in Philly. The only drawback is that its not a good place for vegetarians. Its not that there arent veggie options, theyre just not the best DK has to offer.

This place is trying too hard to be luxurious. They took us to a seating far away from the actual restaurant. Their items were overpriced and didn’t give you enough portions.

Nothing can beat in philly city for lunch option... qe ordered Chicken over rice and pork over rice during lunch hours and it came out to be so good. I would definitely stop by again for lunch options .... Nothing can beat for lunch is because its $7 for lunch (chicken/pork or any other meat on menu). Great staff, service, clean and neat place.

My husband and I came here for our anniversary. We did the tasting menu, which was amazing! The atmosphere sitting at the bar reminded us of Piss Alley in Tokyo. The food was a wonderful. The uni nigiri, A5 Kobe beef nigiri, and sea bass were the most memorable. The service was very nice. They made our anniversary dinner a night to remember.

We eat Sushi about once or twice a week, and I can understand why they are serving so little and pricing is at the higher side. This is actually a BAR!!Yes, they do serve Sushi dishes, but its no comparison to any regular sushi joints.IF YOU ARE LOOKING FOR SUSHI DINNER, DONT GO HERE!!IF YOU ARE TAKING GIRLS OUT TO IMPRESS THEM, THIS IS WHERE IT MIGHT GET YOU A HOME RUN.We were staying down the street at Marriott for couple of nights, found their information from Google and thought they were a legit sushi restaurant, after we got to the place, it turns out to be a bar which also serve sushi, since I have never walk out of any restaurant, I decided to give them a try, just to make sure that I didnt judge them by the bar style. The portion were all small, and price is really high for the portion they serve, which I would assume its because this is a bar where people get sober, so they would not really care about the portion of the food.It does look like a fun bar to have fun time with friends to do some catch up, but definitely not the place to eat.We didnt order any liquor and still paid a bit over $100 and we were still really hungry after walking out of this bar.

This place is amazing!!! I would highly recommend the chef tasting menu for special occasions ($60/person). we had the waiter chose our courses based on some info about what we like or do not. the food was incredible and the experience is totally worth the price. it was cool to not know what you’re going to get to eat until it’s brought to the table

EXTREMELY SALTY! Every single dishes! I would say this is the worst fancy-ish Japanese fusion place in the city.
