Not your grandma’s Giant…this Giant is more geared toward the health conscious and organic lovers out there. Specifically, the one one at 3401 Chestnut in Philadelphia is smaller than other Giant Stores I’ve visited. Perhaps this is why it’s Giant Heirloom instead of Giant Store (sorry for the pun). However, despite its size, it is inviting and cozy. The staff is always kind and helpful. They even drop what they are doing to show you where to find something. Even though it’s not giant in size, it has a Giant heart. 😉

Giant Heirloom reminds me of your friends spoiled sister who never really got a job but somehow always seems to have nice clothes and a new German car. Dont get me wrong, I love Giant, but this is not Giant. They get three stars from me because the store is very nice and has the perfect selection if you are looking to impress your grad school friends with a fancy wine and cheese night. They also participate in Sushi Wednesday (which is almost worth 4 stars on its own). The big Giant in Fitler Square was flooded out so I decided to make the trek to this location on a Wednesday just for Sushi. It seemed very popular. There was a line for self-checkout (the only checkout I saw) and it was hard to move down the aisles because it was so crowded. They have a MASSIVE beer and wine selection. I imagine this is the best place to find that particular IPA or Cote du Rhone your girlfriend wants. Check this place out but be prepared for them not to have what you want, at least not the right brand. I will say the produce selection was big and seemed fresh.PRO: SUSHI WEDNESDAY

Not large but it has a good selection of meat and vegetables the vegetables are very fresh I enjoy the organic apples and lemons and all of their organic produce. they have a self-service checkout line but it moves quickly when someone is always there to help you if you need assistance I highly recommended this grocery store if youre in West Philadelphia

Heirloom means they dont wanna pay rent for a larger store aka a regular Giant Supermarket like those found in the suburbs. Heirloom is a fancy term for a higher priced yet smaller selection of products …the way an heirloom tomato is more expensive than just a plain tomato is. Only in Philly folks /s.

Awful customer service in here every time I’ve had to interact with someone. Basically ready to boycott this place. Staff are unhelpful with questions or issues. My most recent interaction consisted of asking a staff member how I can use a coupon from the GIANT app and they told me they didn’t know because they weren’t familiar with iPhones. When I asked what I should do they told me “I don’t have time to help you. Try again next time you’re here”. Completely dumbfounded by how unwilling this person was to help me or even point me in the right direction. Previous interactions I’ve had with staff have been pretty similar. As someone who has been a weekly shopper for almost two years, but I’m not sure if this place is worth the trouble.

I was here earlier today and 3 out of the 5 employees re-stocking your produce section were not wearing their face masks properly. Did we stop enforcing these at this location? If so I don’t think I’ll be coming back - esp bc the ladies in the fruit/veg area were complaining loudly to each other (again without masks) often at the customer’s face directly. This is from only shopping here ~ 15 min. Yikes!

Great little place to grab essentials and booze. They have a good selection of produce, meats, and cheeses. Very wide variety of craft beers and wine. Not your average Giant, its like a compact version with almost everything you need. Keep in mind the items are smaller in size than a full sized grocery store. For example a bottle of coffee creamer only comes in a 12 oz. Size. This is a perfect place for single people or college kids to grab small quantities of needed items. We are in Philly for 6 weeks and we frequent this store for small items.

Great selection in a small space. Only gripe is when I placed an order for pickup, it was somewhat disorganized and there’s no place to park to get groceries. You have to find a street spot, then lug all the groceries from the store to your car, no one helped me. Now I get them delivered to my door for a $8 charge, and it’s worth every penny.

Heirloom is priced somewhere around Sprouts and Whole Foods, but for the offering of special ingredients right in the middle of University City, the convenience (at least for some) outweighs the cost.Something Heirloom is doing right during COVID-19 is keeping partitions/shields between the self-checkout stations and also at the registers in the wine/beer section. Ive also seen employees sanitizing all the carts and offering hand sanitizer to customers as they enter the store.

I went grocery shopping for the first time without my white significant other. Theres only one grocery store in Philly thats walking distance from me--Heirloom Market. One of the employees (Ms. Teresa?) at the Heirloom Market berated me and yelled at me for walking past her, while she was bending over backwards to help some white woman find a product. When another employee spoke up to tell me not to worry about her, this woman (Ms. Teresa?) followed us around and screamed at both of us. She started calling all her other Heirloom friends to point fingers at both of us and call us names. This is a difficult time for everyone and I appreciate every essential worker out there. But, people, more than ever, seem to think that publicly berating Asian people for shopping at their store is perfectly acceptable. Ive rarely felt different because of the color of my skin--especially because I grew up in a nice area--but these past few weeks have gotten scarier and scarier.

Giant Heirloom Market is a quality grocery store in the North Western University Area. I know that a ton of my friends from UPenn and Drexel prefer shopping here for a reason.Giant is a very small and cramped location. This isnt a problem usually, but it can really be an issue if youre trying to pick up something after work during rush hour. You always have to be mindful not to get in the way of other people. At least for me, its important to know what youre getting out of this location. Because theyre such a small store, theyre quite limited in some aspects. They unfortunately dont have an in house butcher, so you may not find certain cuts of meat. In addition, they frequently run out of certain products like neiche cooking oils at the end of the day. They do have a lot of fresh produce though so thats definetly a plus.I think this location is the equivalent of a smaller Whole Foods, with a smaller selection, catered for the specific University students and UPenn area residents. They have a very good Asian/Indian food section thats unmatched by anywhere else except Chinatown, as well as a lot of more expensive high quality products. If youre here to pick up the basics youll be fine!I just wish they had Free Parking. Theres a UPenn parking garage across the street! They would get so much more traffic (and I would go here more often) if they would have some form of parking. Its a real PITA to get here if youre more than half a mile away.

Review №84

Sorry for the novel. I was SO excited when this store opened and kept going over and over again, being for the most part really satisfied with 95% of the store and it’s offerings. I still do shop here for most of my groceries as I have no other options being on foot 99% of my life and being on a budget whilst living alone and cooking for myself.First, let me preface this review with the fact that the staff easily gets 5 stars- they all have been great. The two problems I have, one can probably be due to growing pains and one is just something I see in literally every grocery store in Philadelphia and it’s starting to boggle my mind completely (as in I just do not understand why this is such an issue).Problem 1: Maybe it’s just when I go? Maybe it’s when I have the availability to shop? Things are constantly out of stock (I usually go right after work- almost every day or every other day- I grocery shop in this way as I walk everywhere and am single and live alone). One day I went to pick up chicken breast, bell peppers and red onions- they were completely out of bell peppers of every variety and no red onions... I was like okay- that’s unusual. Yesterday I went in for baby bok choy, bean sprouts, and paper towels (3 things I’ve seen be there every single time in abundance) and there were none. Growing pains with inventory perhaps? Or maybe school recently starting again causing issues with ordering? I know how hard it is to predict, so no harm, no foul.Problem 2: This is the HUGE issue that I see in every grocery store in Philadelphia (from Whole Foods to Aldi and everywhere in between)... I was REALLY hoping things would be different with this store. The produce section needs some help. At first glance everything looks great- and there is such variety at great prices in such a small space- dig a little deeper though and you will find that a lot of things are rotten- limp- spotty (and no, not everything has to be perfect- that’s not how things come in nature, I know). The bagged salads are NOT date rotated properly- the salsas seem to get to a temp (read: too warm) that makes them bubble in their containers (so the plastic lids bubble up, but don’t unseal) and then when they come back down to the proper temp they leak all over (so many times I’ve grabbed one of those containers to look at an expiration date and got a handful of salsa juice) and the salsa juice is in the bottom of the cooler/fridge, there are bagged/boxed greens/herbs in display fridges that get a constant mist- there is too much water just way too much water on produce here at all times (cucumbers of all things are sometimes almost frozen)- this is not keeping these things fresh- today I had to pick through 15 bundles of baby bok choy to find two decent bunches and through a whole bin of cilantro- the bottom bunches all had slimy rot on them from- you guessed it- too much water! When I have bought bagged romaine hearts from this location I think since they are exposed to the constant mist the inside of the hearts is like liquified lettuce (too wet plus too cold= frozen lettuce= rotten liquified lettuce). I used to work in a produce distribution facility, in the food service industry and in a grocery store, so this kind of stuff really bothers me (and, I will admit makes me a bit more picky with my produce). What bothers me the most though is how much money and food I end up wasting for someone on a super tight budget who is only cooking for one- so that head of Napa cabbage/bag of salad/bundle of baby bok choy has to last longer than 30 seconds. This is not just at this one market location as I stated earlier- however, I wrote this long review because well, I expected much more from a brand new market with brand new everything! All in all- I think the concept is great- the people are great and 95% of the food/product is great. If we could just get the produce department up to speed with freshness and quality and getting rid of that damn constant misting of cucumbers and bagged kale and such- I think it would be such an even better store!
