Selling used gear can be a real hassle, so most of the time I trust my fellow HAMS at HRO to make reasonable offers for my radio equipment. My recent experience was no different. They made me a reasonable offer for my linear amp and paid the agreed upon price without any trouble. I was very pleased with the offer, and it wasn’t even a trade for store credit!Since it was a sizable amount it did take HRO corporate a few days to process the payment. But the folks at HRO Phoenix kept me informed and were good to their word.I would never hesitate to trade-in or sell my used gear to these great folks!

Very helpful and courteous. Knowledgable. Merchandise arrived in 2 days. Updated revision. SOME people here are seemingly too busy to take my money. As a new tech I rely on people who have been around longer than me for advice. Guy on the phone today (3/17) wouldnt quit bragging about his expensive radios, and to call back when I was ready to buy. Screw you, my business is going elsewhere. Its also a bit annoying to be told OVER AND OVER to read the manual. Ive read it, else I wouldnt be calling.

I stopped by HRO Phoenix last week while passing through town on vacation. I dont live near a brick-and-mortar ham radio shop, so I was really looking forward to browsing and testing out a couple radios Ive been considering. The store itself is great. Theres a good selection and radios are available to spin the dials and test. The salesman who helped me left a lot to be desired, however. My wife joined me in the store, and he was inappropriately fixated on her the entire time. Hed (very) briefly answer questions I had and then quickly go back to over-explaining concepts to my wife that she (quite frankly) isnt interested in. He introduced himself to her, but never to me. I asked for recommendations between a couple products, and rather than offer advice, he explained the history of the products to her. She eventually got a bit uncomfortable and decided to head back to the car to wait. As soon as she left, the salesman immediately went to the back of the store and no longer had any interest in assisting.Look, I know this hobby tends to be male-heavy (and these shops dont likely see an abundance of female traffic), but this kind of behavior is part of what keeps it that way. She came in just to support me and instead was the entire focus of undesired attention.I have shopped online from HRO in the past, but our experience at HRO-Phoenix left a really bad impression on both of us. Thanks for the chance to try out a couple rigs, but Ill be purchasing elsewhere.

So, at 1430 ish Mountain Time on Thursday Jan 21st, 2021 I decided to on line order some coax, as there was none to be found at the local brick and mortar stores in Tucson.Given the USPS backlogs and the time of day that I placed my order, I just opted for basic shipping and resigned myself that hopefully I would see the coax by January 30th. It showed up today, Jan 23rd.Can I say WTH in a good way? Thank you HRO for getting the order out same day and somehow getting it to Tucson in 1.5 days.

HRO Phoenix did an exemplary job tracking my order down due to snafus in USPS. The manager of the store was very persistent in digging deep to understand why my order was delayed by several weeks (as opposed to supposedly being at my house in 2 days). He called me back several times to inquire if I had received it, and then he finally got to the root cause of the problem from USPS. If he hadnt been so diligent, Im sure it would still be sitting somewhere. Covid19 has wreaked havoc on all these carriers and I applaud the manager for going the extra mile to ensure he keeps satisfied customers.

If youre like me and dont know a lot about the Amateur radio sport, bring pictures and do some research to avoid confusion. As a new ham licensee, I really wanted to like having a local source and supporting a local store rather than purchase online from online only retailers. My first few times in the store, the staff is working with other customers and if you know ham operators, the conversations arent short. Nothing wrong with that, I just dont have that kind of free time. The one gentleman was helpful when we did get to talk. To save myself some time, I started ordering online and coming in to pick it up. I picked up an order yesterday and was scolded in front of several other customers, that I should have called before I came in, because those computers arent right sometimes. So today, I ordered online, went to a few appointments and two hours later called the store. The man (same guy from previous day) was annoyed that I was calling, he said he didnt have the order it was probably still back east. I asked what I should do and the guy seemed to just want to complain to me and make excuses. I told him I was getting upset, again asking what should I do. He told me they had lots of the product I had ordered, I should just come to the store. I was only 10 minutes away, when I arrived I could hear three men in the back room complaining about my order and trying to figure out what I had ordered. Finally a person came out to see who was there. I told him who I was, he went back the back room and the gentleman who was giving me troubles said loudly hes already here?. 2 minute later they had my order and I told them, Id be going elsewhere in the future, there are better prices online and I can save an hour driving. These folks need to get with the times and be glad that I order and pay on line. I dont spend two hours shooting the breeze to buy every item, but instead they want to be mad that Im ordering on line.

Dont waste your time going here. A friend of mine and I decided we are going to get in to HAM radio and was excited about the potential new hobby. Ive been reading up and various equipment and was pretty confident I wanted the ICOM IC-7300 but was still unclear on everything else that I might need to go with it. Upon searching I found out there was a Ham Radio Outlet 30 minutes from my house so I made the drive. Upon entering the store I was greeted by a staff member who was helping other customers. Since he was helping other customers I parked myself in front of the books where I also noticed someone else waiting sitting in a chair by the transceivers. 10 minutes or so go by and another customer walks in and walks right up to the guy sitting in the chair and asks for him to troubleshoot his headset for him... It was very clear the customer was a regular and also very clear the guy I thought was waiting as well was just an employee that didnt want to get out of his chair to help me. I then moved towards the counter to see if there was anyone else that could help me out. After several more minutes of standing at the counter listening to the staff talk about their blood sugar and medical issues instead of ham equipment or help me I decided it was probably best to leave and purchase my equipment elsewhere. Im not one to usually write reviews but as a business owner myself I would want to know if my staff was dropping the ball like this and my business was missing thousand dollar sales opportunities.

After showing me 2 radios that didnt fit my needs the counter person handed me 2 radios with dead batteries and he asked that I checked them out. Than the counter person answered 3 or 4 phone calls and helped the next customer who walked in the door. In fact the next customer he helped asked if I was next and the counter guy said no and he just flat ignored me. So he was right I will not be be your next customer nor will I ever be. I saw the review that was 1 star for not being greeted. I will agree this happened to me too. But when I went and started to ask questions there was no hurry to rush me off or make me move along. I really think they just let you be to leave it low pressure and give you time to think and shop. To me, this is a IMPORTANT resource to any new Ham. You can find stuff online cheaper, sure. But do you know their return policy? Do you know it will arrive in one piece? I went here wanting to purchase a radio I had my eye on for a long time. I had done my research and of course I found people who loved it, and I found people who hated it. But you have to know what you are going to use it for. You have to know what you like. Maybe you love CW, maybe digital. It is very had to know what to buy that first fits the budget and what will fit you. I needed something that was low cost (I am on disability and money is ALWAYS a issue). I wanted it for my shack and I wanted to take it camping. So the owner helped me and gave me his honest opinion. He did not push the warrant. He said if I hate it or it doesnt work out of the box, bring it back with in 7-10 days no questions they will either swap it out or sell me a new one. We sat there and talked how hard it is when you get into Ham Radio how exciting it can be. But you can get overwhelmed with all of the options of equipment and ways to work the bands. I know people who love CW, fox-hunting, digital and even bouncing stuff off the moon! Me I like public service and rag chewing. So I am confident I got the right rig FOR ME and they will help you too.

HRO Phoenix has always taken great care of me ever since I moved from the Bay Area to Tucson in 2015. Either on the phone or when I am in Phoenix in the store its like the good old days in Redwood City and Sunnyvale. Seeing, touching is very important. Thats why HROs participation at trade shows is also so important. In Yuma, the HRO booth was jammed with people and the Phoenix HRO directly benefits from that. So, the store may be small, but vital. I only hope HRO will recant its decision to close the Sunnyvale store in the heart of Silicon Valley and continue to add more and more supplier relationships. Whenever I see DX Engineerings catalog it blows me away and I worry about HRO. Hopefully you can close the gap, but regardless, having the great service from everyone in the Phoenix office is why I still have a relationship with HRO! 73s all in Bobs memory!
