I love the options here and the vibe of the place! If you go when it’s busy, be prepared to be a little overwhelmed, but just roll with it! I love their tea selection and especially love that you can order any of the teas they sell loose leaf as a drink at the counter. Some of the teas are too expensive for me to buy to make at home, but the way they price their teas to go makes it affordable for me to try new things. The staff is super nice, too!

From the aroma that greets you on the way in to the vast array of coffee (extra kudos for sooo many decaf options) and teas we really enjoyed our visit and felt the prices were fantastic over other gourmet coffee locations. The one disappointing part of our visit was that with all the varieties of beans/ground options it would be nice to have more choices by the cup to try new flavors and experiment a bit! Overall great experience.

Extremely pleasant customer service! Very friendly and very helpful staff. They make you feel like family here.A LARGE coffee of the day is $2.50. A SMALL coffee of the day is $2. I dont know anywhere in Pittsburgh where you can get prices like that for coffee! Except HERE!They are also so much more than just coffee and tea. Various types of biscotti, candy, snacks, tea & coffee supplies dedicated to the old tried and true way of making coffee and tea. Tea balls, tea bags, coffee containers for travel. What makes this place so special? You can buy different types of coffee and make your own coffee flavor concoction at home! Coffee chemistry! Play with the flavors at home, while getting them FRESHLY GROUND right here in store! Chocolate mint coffee, we got you. Cherry Cordial coffee, we got you. Hazelnut, youre covered. From basic to extraordinary...they got you.If you are a cigar aficionado they have cigars of various types for sale.#NationalCoffeeDay #supportsmallbusiness

Usually I love Nicholas Coffee. The workers are always happy to discuss the selection with you, and they have every sweetener and milk alternative possible free of charge. I try to stop in whenever I’m downtown. However, when I went on Friday I had a cashier who I hadn’t had before, and who just didn’t have the same attitude I’m used to. She barely said two words to me during the interaction, and didn’t even ask me if I wanted any milk or sugar, let alone what type I wanted. She made me coming in feel like an inconvenience, and I left dissatisfied with the exchange and my drink. I work in the service industry myself and understand bad days, but a bad day is no excuse for poor customer service. I feel like I now have to make sure she isn’t the one working the drinks to-go counter going forward, and that’s not a great feeling to have. I’ll still try to support you all because I don’t want to see a small business go down, but please work on your customer service. I see reviews going back years mentioning the same issue of poor customer service with one particular cashier, which is a definite red flag. Please work on this so you don’t lose long time customers!

It was really good the first couple of times I ordered from them. Expedient delivery, fresh roasted coffee of single origin. Tried to place another order today, I only order about a pound of whole bean coffee at a time because I like it as freshly roasted as possible when I drink it. It wouldnt allow me to order unless I ordered like 4 lbs. in bulk for some reason. Otherwise it kept saying no shipping to this location for this weight amount or something. It charges like $15 for UPS shipping, not sure why ordering 1 lb. is a problem today when it wasnt a problem for the last few weeks.

Nicholas Coffee is an excellent coffee shop selling a wide variety of fresh roasted coffee and teas as well as other related items. Their coffee and tea selection is probably the best in the city. The staff is courteous and friendly, although at peak times, they can be quite busy as they not only have to wait on customers, but also have to prepare bulk orders to be shipped to restaurants and other retail outlets. In addition to their fresh roasted coffee beans, I highly recommend their coffee bar. It isnt fancy and doesnt offer the range of drinks that you can get at some chain coffee shops, but the price and quality cant be beat.

A fantastic selection of freshly roasted coffee in whole bean or ground. They have just about every flavor you can think of. Additionally, they have a huge selection of teas, drinks and snacks from around the world, all at very reasonable prices. The only downfall of the place is their readily prepared items such as brewed coffee and fresh snacks as the brewed coffee is very watered down. The line can also get a bit long and there is no interior seating for when youre just looking for a short break.

My son told me about this place & how good the coffee is, I had to try it for myself. Stopped in on light up night, the place was not packed as I thought it would be the girl at the counter where you order hot coffee was on her cell phone texting as I stood there waiting to be waited on, she finally looked at me and said oops, my bad and finally laid her phone down, she took my order and as I heard her and the young man with the beard that was working with her, swear, saying s__t, as customers were clearly in listening distance. I was unimpressed with the customer service, as there didnt seem to be any. But I did enjoy the Holiday Cheer coffee. Tip for you guys at Nicholas, train your employees to be attentive & friendly and to put the cell phones away while at work.

Welcome back. We walked into the shop today to buy coffee for the first time since the recent fire. We bought coffee beans and a couple of cups of coffee. Whoever made the coffee did not put the lid on my daughter coffee properly. She lifted the coffee and her hand was SCALDED. The guy behind the counter didn’t blink except to ask if she needed the coffee topped off. It was obvious to all of us she had a bad burn . There was no apology/ offer of ice or a cold rag. The staff watched as we try to offer comfort and help to my daughter. After all your business has been thru, might I suggest the following. Own up to it and offer to help. My only issue is that their customer service seems to be priority 2 or 3. They tend to talk across the counter to each other and let you stand there waiting for them to acknowledge you. I have been a customer of the coffee beans/roasts here for a number of years and will not consider going anywhere else for coffee beans. Their roasts contain no bitter after taste as some of the more prevalent coffee purveyors. The customer service that I have experienced has been exemplary both in the store, on-line, and by phone. While I was in Iraq, I wanted beans shipped to our APO (Army Post Office) box, which most businesses did not accommodate. I called the store and explained the situation and the woman that I talked to packed the bags of beans, boxed them, and took them to the post office herself to be able to ship them to me! She did this for me on a number of occasions, as well as others who served alongside me that were still in Iraq after I left and had introduced them to Nicholas great coffee beans. It is disappointing to see such critical reviews for some seemingly small infractions by their employees and availability of freshly brewed coffee near closing time.

We arrived on a Saturday afternoon around 3pm. I had a large Guatemalan drip coffee. The flavor was not fresh, more like a mixture of wet dog and moldy grass. Aka, old and rancid. Dare I say that the roast was not recent or more likely the coffee sat in a dirty pot for hours before it was poured for us. None of their roasters were in operation in the back room. The aroma walking in reeked of artificial berry flavors, not freshly roasted coffee. If you go here, get an espresso blended drink.

What a large selection of flavored, regular, and decaf coffee! Not to mention the tea. I like getting the small pre-packaged bags of ground flavored coffee to sample or gift. I think the smallest increment you can buy loose beans is a half pound. When it comes to tea I think they will let you do quarter pounds. You can ask for a tea list when trying to decide or getting a whif from the container is also helpful. When I went there were discounted candy bars under the counter. It would take a long time to try all of the coffee flavors here. But I remember loving the creme brulee. I went around lunch time and it wasnt super busy here. But with all these options sitting behind the counter I imagine it could get a little crazy at times

You gotta love Nicholas. It is a Pittsburgh institution. Before Starbucks and Teavana, before the proliferation of twee little cafes everywhere, Nicholas provided. Still, it is a great place to find obscure teas and brewing devices. Skip the pre-flavored coffees, as well as artificially fruity teas, and go for natural leaves and unadulterated beans. Someone must feel differently about that, though, because they have quite a selection of both. Still, when I really just need a pound or two of simple, china green or oolong, Nicholas has quality and bulk quantity at a reasonable price.

The clerk who sold me the French press told me to Have your wife try it out, if she doesnt like it bring it back with the receipt.. Im 56 years old and have been shopping at Nicholas for years. The clerk who waited on me today was very rude and very combative and refused to accept my return. When I pointed out what the selling employee told me, she said she had to call upstairs. A few minutes later she came back and told me that they would accept the return THIS TIME (as if I would buy one every week, use it and try to return it.). I had my frequent buyers card in my hand, planning to purchase some coffee for my wife and loose tea for myself, but due to the hostility the employee showed I changed my mind and laid the card on the counter and told the employee, very politely, I dont think Ill be shopping here anymore, she said, Thats fine. If not for this I would have probably gone back after a time, I loved the place - browsing the selection of teas and coffees, but her cavalier and hostile attitude pretty much sealed the deal.
