Live music and great atmosphere! Service was nice. We Checked out the Cigar room downstairs, if I was a smoker I feel I would like to hang out there. Ballycastle Sausage Roll was too soft for my liking. Not sure if the sausage is supposed to be mushy, but it was soft like mashed potatoe. I Kinda wonder how they stapled the dollar bills to the ceiling.
We had an amazing time at this pub while visiting Portland this past weekend. I had the Shepherds Pie which was absolutely delicious, although I personally prefer more of a 50/50 veggies to meat ratio (this was quite heavy on the beef but really it comes down to personal preference). My fiance had the Reuben, which he found delicious, but felt like it was too heavy on the kraut and lacking on the meat. Service was wonderful and the overall atmosphere was great! Wish I could have the Shepherds Pie here in AZ. Will return when we visit again!
The cigar bar downstairs. Never felt more like the Godfather than sitting at their huge, old table with old chairs, chatting with some great friends. They have cigars in their own humidor that you can purchase. Couple that with a quality Old-Fashioned and you are in for a great night. Recommended highly!
Lovely! Well air conditioned, good food, lovely service. Understanding service staff, and the manager/owner is at very least Irish and honestly absolutely delightful. I probably would give this pub 5 stars if they had Strongbow on tap... a cool half pint of snakebite and black would have gone down a real treat on my visit. Otherwise, honestly 10/10.
Originally (many years ago), I did not know there was more than one Kells. Over time, I have stumbled into several, including the one near NE 23rd, and the one in Post Alley in Seattle. Id be hard pressed to tell you which is my favorite, but I can say with authority that I have frequented this location on 2nd Ave more that the rest; this is mostly due to proximity than anything else, but I do love this location.Things are only now starting to return to pre-COVID levels of normalcy, but in the Before Times, live music (frequently, but not always Irish or Irish-adjacent) was a frequent, if not daily, occurrence. The food here is phenomenal: the kind of comfort food youd hope for and expect from an Irish pub: corned beef & cabbage, shepherds pie and the like. And the beer cheese soup? Heavenly. You know how people say some things are not worth writing home about? Well, that soup is. Find yourself an Irish relative or pen-pal, simply for bragging about how good the soup is.You want drinks? Sure, they have a full bar...but they also have an entire whiskey library and cigar shop, so if youre not holding a Guinness in one hand, theres better be one of the other two in it. Irish whiskey, scotch, bourbon...its all here.Kells St. Patricks Day parties are the stuff of legends. In fact, they end up blocking off several blocks with tents, firepits and noisy, drunken revelers. And despite being overwhelmed to near bursting, they still manage to crank out food and beverage orders at unheard of speeds. The management here know what theyre doing: how to plan ahead, how to hire competent staff, and how to make a mean cocktail or a fantastic meal.Easily one of the best pubs in Portland, hands down. Haters can kiss my Blarney Stone.
We sat outside. Such a nice setting! The owner even stopped by the check on us. Great service!
Really nice pub, looks typical tourist on the outside, more authentic on the inside. Decent range of beer, and food I had was good, and the crac with manager was good. Never got a chance to try the lamb, as they are currently only open Fridays and Saturdays. Hopefully that changes soon.
I never write negative reviews because I know they hurt business. But what I experienced kept me up all night, I contemplated giving them a call or just writing it here. I obviously decided on the latter. One of the staff there followed me to my car and accused me of kicking down their A-frame sign and said they have cameras. Show me that I kicked it and I will take this down and apologize!Ive never felt embarrassed and discriminated in my life. So dont go there if youre not a regular or white!
Johnny was a delightful bartender. Funny guy to have visit your table. Amazing recommendations. Delicious drinks. Get Johnny if you go - big bald bearded Irish bloke, with great suggestions, and better jokes. 10/10.
They set the bar for authenticity, customer service, and attention to detail. Great beers great whiskeys great experience. I will only come to Portland for Kells.
We loved the establishment and the staff. Food and drinks were AWESOME!
One of my favorite after-work hangouts, great happy hour deals. Good vibes and pretty chill before their nightly music. Decent cigar lounge too for those that are into that.
Watched the fight and my boyfriend got his Guinness fix and a taste of his people. Owners were so wonderful and accommodating.
The restaurant was great. Cigars, lounge great but outside to get location homeless threatening my wife. Not safe!
Great drinks and super great, prompt, attentive, friendly staff! We will be back!
Really enjoyed the Shepard’s pie and overall dining experience!
Came in on a Wednesday night. Service was very good and friendly. Matt H. and the lovely young lady took care of me. I went there not just for the food and great atmosphere but for the cool little gem down stairs. There is a very nostalgic and cool cigar cellar with a gangster vibe to it. I was able to take my drink and tab downstairs to finish off the night. They have a small but good selection of cigars. I am impartial to My Father and they have it! Great cigar for $10, cant beat that. I highly recommend going there if you are in the area.
Had a delicious meal on a Tuesday night. The food was delicious. I really enjoyed the curry over chips and the shepherds pie I tried a bit of was delicious. The bread pudding was perfect and the dark and stormy I got from the bar was also really well made. The servers were friendly and funny. Great service great food! Thinking about when I can go again.
Awesome bar. Went one Friday for Haunted Portland walking tour, came back Saturday because we liked the bar so much. Lots of seating and space.
Really good, authentic Irish food and beer. They have multiple Kells beers on tap. I had both the double IPA and the tropical, hazy IPA. Both taste great, but I thought the double was a little better. The white bean soup was much better than I thought a bean soup would be, but the real winner was the Ruben sandwich! It had really thin slices of meat, tangy sauerkraut, and perfectly toasted marble rye bread. Comes with a side of thin sliced, sweet pickles and onions too. This place also has some cool memorabilia on the walls to look at.
Kells is a local pub and restaurant that has good energy and is a fun local hangout. If you arent into crowds, go here during lunch or for an early dinner. The staff are friendly and the service is excellent. The atmosphere here cant be beat. Go at night on the weekends and mingle with the crowd while listening to Irish music - sing along too. A must-have shared plate is the Irish Nachos made with thin cut potato chips cooked crisp and topped with what seems like two pounds of cheese, olives, onions, and sour cream. I’ve ordered many items off the menu and I haven’t been disappointed with any of it.
My GF and her friend decided to have some food at Kells. The problem that I have is, I specifically asked for my hamburger to be seasoned and cooked well done twice to the guy taking my order and he responded back by saying it will be done to your liking. Well guess what my burger didnt get seasoned nor cooked all the way through like I asked the guy whom taken and written down my order and how if like my burger done. All they deserve is a zero for service but I had to give the bums a 1 ⭐. Skip this place!
I really enjoyed their drinks and their food was surprisingly good and its in like the best location for a night out on the town
Service was kinda slow but expected for a Saturday. Server was nice but didnt come around much. Had to pilfer silverware from another table. Hubbys Shepherd Pie was ok but my Stew had meat that was tough to chew. Not worth $15 that is for sure. The negroni was spot on so that almost saved the day. Only in town for the day and came here under a suggestion from a friend. Next time were gonna skip this.
Beer was good and the boneless bbq wings were very tasty. Service was attentive and friendly. Ill be back next time Im in Portland!
My favorite Portland Bar/Restaurant! They always have a great selection of alcohol, everyone is welcoming and friendly and a clean atmosphere has always been their game even precocious!
Great atmosphere, staff and food! Live music too! Hurray! Check it out!
Excellent food and service. Loved the sausage roll dish. And of course the Guinness.
I Always enjoy this pub when I visit Portland. Its been here for a long time and remains clean and classy.
Cool place for a beverage and some yummy snacks, great service and a fun place to chill either inside or out.
Super busy on St. Pattys day of course, no surprise there. Live music was awesome! Limited menu was kind of a bummer, please bring back Irish Nachos ASAP!! Mustard sauce on the Beef pasty was way too much. I like Mustard, but it needed to be toned down a lot or served on the side.Took over 20 minutes to get a beer, dont think the servers were quite prepared to be back. All staff were very friendly though.
Great service! Everyone was super attentive and the food was delicious! Will be back :)
Ive missed Kells so much! Standard masking protocol/crowd management in Moderate Risk areas. One feature I havent seen at other places: QR codes for the menu! Really neat.
The food was great! The beer is really good and they had live music
Gerard has a professional establishment and a great Irish food. The Bangers and Mash, are one of my favorite dishes served there, between live Irish music and the homely feel, 5 stars.i used to be a former employee, and was fired from a dispute with a current employee overall, not to bad of a wait time?
The downtown location was boarded up due to recent rioting, etc. There was a note sending us to another location Judd met us at the door. He was our server and provided us with outstanding service. The food was the phenomenal. Highly recommended.
Love this place our favorite place in Portland. Fish and chips are to die for.
You cant go wrong with Kells!
Cozy place, very good food.
I enjoyed sitting outside. They serve a house Irish nitro stout which I thought tasted better then the Guineas. The food was..okay. bar food. I think during a sports night it would be fun. The cigar bar underneath sounded like a cool old school speakeasy.
Awesome bar. Try an old tradition and stick a dollar to their ceiling you will have a ton of fan. Great whiskey selection, reasonable price and life music (Irish music). Great time all around. They also have a cigar bar in the basement. Awesome.
Friendly staff, great food.
Nice little place!! Cool atmosphere and good food. Only problem was they forgot part of our order (they didnt charge for it though, and we ended up being too full to eat an appetizer anyway) Also the server was very nice! O and good beer :)
We had a private party in the upstairs room and everything was phenomenal. They have really good house beers and great staff who serve them. Corned beef and cabbage and fish and chips were both top notch.
The service was attentive and friendly, the Shepherds Pie was absolutely delicious. True comfort food. It was a place where we could relax and enjoy an unhurried and tasty meal. All good !!
Cool location to meet with coworkers. Bring your appetite because portions are large.
