I’ve only been here once, but they made a great latte. Perfection. Got it to go, but there were a few people quietly working on tables and it seemed like a nice place to chill. Air flow seemed good. Interior was relaxing. Loved the cuckoo clock.
Awesome place. Came in for a simple breakfast and immediately felt welcome. There are some small tables in the alley for outdoor seating but also four LOVELY benches at the storefront where youll get the nice and soft morning sunshine while sipping your warm latte.I also appreciate that they are keeping a high sanitary standard during this special time. When I was handed the coffee cup lid, the barista had his gloves on and tried not to touch the inside of the lid.
Ive only been once, but Im so far not impressed. The spicy chai was watery and not flavorful. The sandwich was bigger than expected but also quite low on flavor, with too much cheese and barely any sausage. This wont be my new favorite spot, but a lot of other people seem to like it. I enjoy the cute benches outside for seating. I may try a second time to see if today was a fluke, because I cant imagine why so many people would be here if their menu items were always this bland.
Sent kid in for hot chocolate☕ 🍫 .... he asked for it to go but they tried to make him stay.... had to go and make the dude give him a to go cup for it.... he was shaking hope he didnt do nuthin extra to it.... my kid felt sicc later #ThaFunkyDiabetic #Kixoholix413 #ThaKixoholixCrew
Amazing customer service and friendly staff. A little concerning to see so many people in doors without masks. Even staying at the tables with masks on, its a small space. Hopefully they keep that mask mandate when restrictions lift, because it has a such a wonderful atmosphere, I would love to spend time sipping a coffee there without the anxiety of being around completely unmasked people.
Always a calm vibe with good music playing. The staff is top notch, professional, and friend late.
This is a great coffee shop. I recently enjoyed a refreshing iced mint tea, and their coffee drinks are good.
Best latte I’ve had in a long while. Much needed. ThX
Great coffee and atmosphere. I wish they had more of the bigger tables, not the dinky round ones, and it gets rather hot in 100 degree weather.
Great service and the best hot Kate and others specialities of the coffee menu!!!
Staff is friendly, the food is good, but there isnt a huge selection of bakery items.
Good customer service, delicious lattes, and I very much loved my gluten free marionberry muffin!!
Good coffee, good atmosphere, friendly staff. All around great spot ☕️
The customer service was exceptional! Great ambiance for a fun little neighborhood coffee shop. My blended mocha was fantastic! Although I did not partake, the pastries and snacks looked wonderful. Definitely stop in and give it a try if youre in the neighborhood!
Great coffee :) great local café
It has caffeinated things, it has baked goods, it has an outdoor space, and it isnt Starbuck Corp. I also liked the price for just coffee.I could see spending time here again. If I lived around here it could be my coffee joint.I would take my 5 star review with some caution though. Im not a guy obsessing about my coffee pours, beans, or mad scientist glassware to generate the perfect cup of joe. I also have no idea what a Flat White is.Maybe this place does all that, but Im a simple man with simple needs. My needs got met and nobody knifed me in the belly outside...so 5 stars.
Common Grounds has been such an amazing coffee shop to me the several times I traveled through Portland. Now that I moved to Portland I frequently come here...like literally every day most weeks. If you want the most chill, laid back, yummy coffee having space go to Common Grounds. My pockets thank me for coming here and getting a pot of coffee for under $4 instead of just once cup which lets be honest-is never enough. I come here and pop my headphones in and work for hours. The staff are always nice and helpful and never judge me for being there longer than most people. They even have outside seating and dog treats. They also have super comfy green couches to relax on. So whether you came to work or relax Common Grounds has your back! 🐶❤✌
I’m honestly surprised to see so many high reviews. of all the coffee shops in portland this place is nothing special. common grounds has good options for seating but mediocre portion sizes. also, ingredients are always out of stock so i have had to order my 3rd choice from the menu at least a few times.
I visit alot of coffee ☕ shops. Heres a top spot if youre in the neighborhood 🙂.
This place has such bad service and watery drinks, why would anyone waste their money here?
Really good coffee. Bagels were excellent.
Great coffee place even though it open at 7am.
My favorite coffee, my favorite cafe.
Cute spot with tasty coffee (Caffe Vita grounds) & chai tea.
This coffeehouse is a totally random and culturally unique little coffee place. Love it
Lovely little place, has art, a nice somewhat private outdoor area that many are fond of. Great food. Eat the Hawthorne!
Common Grounds has always been one of my favorite coffee shops in Portland. Great coffee, friendly staff, good sandwiches, and the coffee cake is compulsory. I am also a fan of the spicy chai when I stop by in the afternoon.
Best ever... Great coffee. Great staff. Owner really cares about the people. Fresh baked goods in-house everyday. Good vibes. Good tunes.
Great place good coffee
So glad they are back! Love the coffee and the atmosphere. Very kind too. Stay safe, yall.
There is a million places in portland to get good coffee so i am not too picky and usually happy with what i get. I will usually judge a place based on the food and specialty drink options. The pastries here are great, especially the cakes. It is also affordable for the quality. I will for sure start coming here more often for a good cup of coffee.
I really like this coffee shop, even though its a bit of a drive for me. Its in a cool part of town on Hawthorne Blvd., in an area where there are lots of places to get food and beverages, shop, etc, and just below Mt. Tabor, one of my favorite places to bike or hike around.I really like their coffee, and they have cinnamon rolls that are delicious, especially if you have one warmed up and put butter on it! I almost never eat cinnamon rolls but theirs are so awesome I always get one, except when I get there later in the day and theyre sold out!The staff are friendly and fast, and I like the way the place is decorated inside. Its inviting and cozy, and obviously a popular spot.
Very good coffee, friendly staff & good location. Located at Eastern Hawthorne, this coffee shop isnt as crowded as the epicenter of Hawthorne. I had the salmon capers with onion bagel & a shot-in-the-dark and everything was really yummy. Also atmosphere is inclusive and friendly - I saw everyone from hipsters to families to retirees in there. I highly recommend this place if you ever find yourself craving coffee on Hawthorne St.
Best coffee in Portland. However they brew there coffee is actually perfect it amazes me every time. Some places have that weird nutty flavor that can just throw the drink off, but not here. And the food is good!
Breakfast sandwich...yum
I ordered a bunch of cheddar biscuits for a home game, that a friend picked up. I was 30 minutes late and they were all gone 😭 I got 0 biscuits that I paid for 😡
Cozy atmosphere. Not a huge place but thats also a bit of its charm. I tried and enjoyed their house brew coffee; smooth and not too bitter. Mix it with a delicious shortbread cookie, you wont be disappointed!
Great coffee, good prices, no pretense. Whats not to love?
I love the atmosphere. Laid back, comfortably furnished (as opposed to the stark arrangement of other cafes), yummy treats. Most importantly, their coffee is great & the coffee drinks are well made. I am particularly fond of their mochas.
I LOVE Common Grounds! Their staff is friendly and amazing! They have so many great drinks, my personal favorite is their white chocolate mocha, but Ill often to there to get a cherry Italian soda (which is by far the best flavor) if its too late in the day for coffee! Its a great environment for working on your computer, meeting a friend or hanging out with a small group! They also have a few pastries or sweet treats, bagels, and sandwiches. This place is my favorite! Thank you Common Grounds staff!
Outstanding cappuccino!! A great way to start your Sunday (or any other) morning! If you love coffee, and a mellow vibe, this is the perfect place for you!
Love the vibe. Lots of good homemade pastries. I especially like the banana bread, coffee cake, and chocolate chip cookies
One of the better places in town to grab non-pastry food and coffee. The turkey sandwich is good. They also serve beer and are open later. It makes for a nice spot to remotely get work done. The tables are a bit small with makes people take up more space than they should. If youre working with another person on laptops, youll probably take up two tables. Bigger tables would be ideal for group work.
Had coffee, it was good
The combination of great prices, middle-of-the-road dependable food, and cozy seating -- I find it very conducive to getting work done. Great staff. Just chill and comfy.
One of the best bakeries in Portland. You can get a wide variety of delectable breads and pastries, and bake at home pie shells and dough. They also serve breakfast and lunch sandwiches that are to die for. If your looking or tasty and amazing look no further.
Excellent latte. Cozy atmosphere and good bagel sandwiches. They also have day olds
Great coffee. Welcome back!!! 😁
So cute and cozy. This place has room to study and has such a portland vibe. Absolutely love it!
The coffee is good here, better than most! Chill atmosphere and no rush vibe. A lot of people reading, connecting, enjoying the simple things in life. I typically get a bagel and they are good ~ this is one of the more old school roots coffee shops in SE Portland, I prefer it over the other canned, contrived venues that seem to now be so in vogue.
GOOD coffee and muffins
Very nice coffeehouse. The Hawthorne is one of the best brekkiewhiches ive ever had!
Divey but lively coffee shop with plenty of seating, including couches to chill and read on with a selection of current magazines provided. Prices are reasonable and the slice of zucchini cake was huge and delicious. I took away 1 star because I found the flavored latte to be way too sweet and I generally like sweet. If you dont like it sweet, Id recommend asking for half the pumps.
Their coffee is quite good but their baked goods and service is what takes them over the top. I had a few of their vegan and non-vegan breads and they were all fantastic.
This coffee shop is a hidden nugget. Not only do they have great coffee, they also make yummy pastries. If youre hungry, common grounds has a killer tuna melt sandwich.
EXCELLENT menu items for a little cafe! I was impressed. My wife and I ordered the Avocado Toast and Poached w/ Avocado (served with an ENTIRE avocado!!)- and GF toast. The toast was good (kudos) and the plates were perfect. Best hearty, healthy and delicious breakfast menu Ive seen at a little cafe yet. Both plates offered a surprizing flavor kick: one with a corn pepper jam, the other with the g-sauce: house-made, full of greens, ginger and garlic. Delicious. Nice atmosphere, friendly staff. I wish more places offered fresh breakfast options like this. Good spot for a 2-4 person quick morning bite, or for solo work/read on a week day.
The staff were very friendly, great customer service, and good coffee as well. They have a nice variety of healthy foods and substitutes for those who cannot have dairy. I would recommend others to try it.
What a Great Cozy Place!Their Dragon Jasmine Tea was so Aromatic. The Avocado Sandwich YUMMM!!!It was like a Friends episode with our friends entering in and joining us for 2nd Breakfast! We Will Be Back!!! :D
This place just makes me happy. Great for working, meeting a friend, or taking a break from errands. Not only does the staff make me feel welcome but the customers are friendly too.
Simple, hippy ambiance. Decent size place, lots of seating. Great coffee, good food menu. I saw a very small theater in the back but did not attend a performance.
Love this place. Amazing bagels and vegan sandwich. The dirty blonde with glasses is a sweet heart and the rest of the staff is also great.
Loved it. Coffee & service and ambiance: awesome
A very Portland coffee place. If you want to feel hipster, this is the olds for you. I only gave it 4 stars because the people up front werent super nice. Usually, I walk in a coffee house and am greeted with smiles and friendly chatting, but here it was blank states and boredom. Other than that, the coffee is really good and the place is cozy
Great place in every regard, except the ketchup, which contains cinnamon and nutmeg? Not too crazy about pumpkin spice on my savory breakfast sandwich. Even if I say no ketchup, some of it sneaks its way in. Great sandwiches, otherwise.
Very few vegetarian choices. Too many sweet carby things. Needs more healthy options other than cold chopped veggies and hummus. Warm soups and vegetarian sandwiches, or savory whole grain treats.
Prices were pretty alright, they had an option to buy a small pot of coffee, which was great! Small nibbles and pastry items, a great place to hunker down into some book or computer work. The seating is limited though!
Love this little coffee shop, all of the staff make great drinks! I like to bring my godson here for tea, its kid friendly and theres a really nice amount of seating.
Slow service, food not worth the price
Great coffee, solid WiFi. Seriously. You could run a computer repair company out of their connection. But dont. The availability of power outlets also makes it a great place to hang out with your computer, and every once in a while someone will be playing a guitar. The food is also great - coffee shop prices but worth it.
Excellent Coffee and food, a great place to chat or read, my major complaint is that there just is not enough plugs near seating to actually go and get some work done. Beside that, excellent. My personal favorite is the Breakfast Panini with Ham and Tomato.
Comfortable space with newspapers, cheap coffee, and a wide pastry and small breakfast item selection, but the staff can be a bit snooty (not that this is particularly unusual for a Portland coffee shop) and theres often no seating available. Still a great place to grab a cup, provided you can get a spot!
Im a tea drinking rather than a coffee drinker. This place offers 4 kinds of chai :) I refer to Common Ground if I need to meet with someone in the middle of town. Great location.
Amazing tea selections. Great atmosphere. Cozy furniture, and at times even plays! This is a must go to, for any one who hasnt been!
One of my favorite chill cafe spots in pdx if not my #1. Internet is always solid, baristas are friendly but not robotic (do you want a receipt? Do you want a receipt? Etc etc). Great centralized location in a cool neighborhood with plenty of off street parking, comfortable temperature (ac always works), comfortable seating, plenty of power outlets, music is never too loud, free magazine rack, plenty of great options for tea and coffee, healthy and tasty food menu that is reasonably priced, bathrooms are always clean, good lighting, cool name and cool logo. The Mt Hood vanilla hot tea is quite good and I have not seen it anywhere else. Unlike starbucks, there is not a swarm of flies in the cafe due to the drive thru window or a ridiculous number code for accessing the bathrooms. Cc is truly deserving of 5 stars!I
One of my favorite coffee spots. The people who work here are friendly and helpful, and the atmosphere is relaxed, cozy--everything youd want in a coffee house.
Nice place to chill and study or read a book or meet a friend. Common Grounds houses a fair amount of seating for how small it is, and they keep music levels at a reasonable volume to allow for social endeavors beyond being blasted by coffeehouse rock.I always do a boring ole Shot in the Dark, but they use good coffee and good espresso so its hard for me to divert. They also offer pastries and small sandwiches, which is a nice step up from the pastry-only trend that seems to be swallowing up coffee shops. Some people actually want to hang out at a coffee shop, and might want to eat something while theyre there! These guys get that.Common Grounds is also the entrance to the Defunkt Theatre, which you should definitely check out if edgy, modern, relevant art is your thing. They put on a great show, and the coffee shop is always open before the show and during intermission!
Great local cafe. Good people, good vibes and the cheapest cup of coffee around without sacrificing quality.
It has a homey neighborhood feel and easily caters to the stroller crowd while remaining just upbeat enough for young folk. My mocha was ok and the blueberry coffee cake mass produced.
Great ambiance, good coffee, professional and friendly service, nice view. Im definitely going back.
Like this place for work and studying. Good amount of space. Great coffee. Friendly staff. Street parking.
This is such a classic, old school Portland spot. Good vibes and staff. Lovely with kids, too.
Music was a tiny loud for my personal like. Great coffee. Friendly staff.
Nice and quiet cafe with very well brewed coffee and tasty bagels
Common Grounds is awesome. Cool, friendly owners and staff......always a great sound track.....good coffee and food.
Nice cosy cafe with lots of natural light and light bites. They did a nice comforting bowl of 3-bean soup while we were here. Could spend hours at this place reading!
My wife and I dropped in for a spontaneous date and found what we were looking for. An open late true Portland coffee shop. The decor was older, but clean and taken care of, couches and plenty of 2-person tables. The coffee was similar to many Portland brews, which is good. The barista was very skilled with the espresso pulls and foam art. We tried the Raspberry Coffee Cake and another treat that was a caramel, chocolate and coconut bar. Both were very good with coffee. The internet was a bit slow, but there at least 10-15 laptops and tablets around. I have found that you cannot judge the Internet speed of a coffee shop on one visit. The music was not loud but was of the light techno nature. It would be great for me while punching out code.
Outstanding. Busy place in a funky part of town. Plus, they have a really great theatre behind them!
Portland chill, which is a compliment, unlike Seattle chill which is not. Great vibe, coffee, and people. It will be my regular stop when in Hawthorne.
Great price on a cup of coffee to stay. Open late and always friendly.
Great please to have coffee and cheap refills. Strong wifi and relaxing atmosphere. Egg sandwiches are big and tasty.
This place serves a lot of good food.
Coffee so good I didn’t even have to add sugar or half and half.
Great coffee!
