The Klum House philosophy of teaching makers how to truly understand the how and why of doing their craft is the best Ive ever experienced. So many of my questions got answered. It was a well-rounded, fulfilling and rewarding way to INVEST IN MY DREAMS.
I made the Slab Town bag in a Zoom class with Ellie. It turned out looking great and I really appreciated the attention to detail that led to a successful sew.
Such a great workshop, fabulous teacher & products. Cant wait to make another one.
I have ordered twice. Each time I got my order quickly. The second time I was missing an item. I emailed and they immediately sent me the missing item without question and I got it in a few days.
This is a review of the slabtown online workshop..in short, this was a wonderful sewing/creative experience and would recommend to anybody.ellie and her team was super meticulous about the kit ( id recommend doing the pre cut kit if this is your first time ). All supplies were well cut and all required tools were provided. The printed instruction booklet was very well written and the illustrations were well done and very informative. The class itself was a lot of fun. It was more of a lecture style and she had professional videos for each step. this was really helpful to watch a step over a few times if things didnt make sense. Ellie was there live to answer questions and offer encouragement. She also gave some really good perspective/wisdom about the creative process and practical tips about our energy level and keeping the bigger picture in mind.she definitely wanted us to be successful and feel successful in completing this bag. And we were! This was probably the most complicated project i have done. Previously, I was a confident beginner, but feel much more confident now.I would recommend getting the pre-cut kit, then you can focus on the (fun) part of sewing instead of pattern cutting. After completing the kit, I started to realize all the thought that was put into this pattern, the reasons for the cuts, specific increasing seam allowances, etc. This kit was designed from the ground up to produce a high quality backpack that most anybody can sew successfully. It takes a lot of planning/forethought to do that and want to thank Ellie for that!
I am in love with this company. From the first order I have felt myself growing as a bagmaker. Elie Lum (owner/designer) is AMAZING and I swear shes my spirit guide 🙌. Ive made 3 of her bags in the past couple months. The Oberlin, The Fremont and most recently the Slabtown. I was blessed enough to attend her online Slabtown workshop and I feel confident enough to try a second one on my own. Cant wait for more classes and new designs.Lifetime fan and customer .
This place is the best. I have gone from knowing nothing to constructing my own bags. Their classes, private lessons, lectures and one on one business coaching is phenomenal. No kidding. Classes are full of so many different people, the instructors are inspiring, sheesh, I can’t say enough. Oh! The patterns and kits are flipping awesome.
Ellie is a wonderful teacher. She has a thoughtful, patient teaching style and has years of expertise to pull from. Her workshops are organized and very welcoming to people of all levels of experience. Dont miss these workshops!! In addition to a really fun workshop I took with Ellie, Ive also had a private industrial sewing machine lesson and some brand consulting. Ellie is amazing and Portland is lucky to have her!
I was so excited to find Klum House & see that they teach private industrial sewing classes. I have a brand making bags & accessories, and I was really looking to deepen my knowledge of the industrial sewing machine, how it functions, and learn new sewing techniques. Ellie was warm & inviting, and made me feel at ease right away. Her patient teaching style really helped me get comfortable with the machine. I have since scheduled follow-up lessons with her to help me develop my designs for market. She not only brings 18 years experience sewing products for market, she also is consulting with me about my product designs, and creative business questions. I am so glad I found her!
I have taken 2 classes here and loved them both. I left with 2 wonderful bags, one I kept, the other I gave to my daughter. She loves it. It was fun, informative, creative and supportive. I will definitely be back to take another class, and I have already connected a couple of friends who are interested in making a bag too. Keep the great classes coming!!!
I took Ellies knapsack class and left feeling empowered (who would of thought that I could make a backpack?!?!?). Ellie had a great style as she helped us navigate the ins and outs of the project. II was in awe of Ellies teaching skills and her ability to bring everyone along regardless of their skill level.
Ellie is an amazing teacher with SO much experience! She also super fun and has a great energy about her. Shes really welcoming to all levels and all walks of life, which makes her classes totally accessible and non-intimidating. Klum house is a really sweet space full of her and Dustins art. You feel inspired the moment you walk in!
Where to begin! This is such a special and welcoming place, especially to someone with no previous sewing experience. Ellie made the learning process super easy and her dedication to the craft and love of teaching really shined through. The class and guidance was thoughtful, enlightening, entertaining, and at the end I left knowing how to use a sewing machine and with something I made myself! How rad is that? I couldnt recommend this experience more and I cant wait to go back myself for another class!
I recently took the Willow Tank class with Katie. What fun!... Katie has such a dynamic personality and her energy is just what you need when diving into a 6 hour garment making class. Klum House offers a space that is cozy and without judgement. I left feeling inspired and ready to take on another garment at home. Thanks for bringing old and new makers together for some creative fun. Keep on keeping on.~
I met with Ellie for a private industrial sewing machine class after running into issues with my machine. She was incredible! The lesson was geared towards my specific needs, and left me feeling prepared to tackle the issues I was experiencing. Ellie made me feel welcome and comfortable asking even the silliest questions. I will definitely be back for more lessons and workshops!
After taking my second class with Ellie I want to share the fun and productivity I experienced! Ellie is organized, thoughtful, creative and very in tune with her students. She does a good job of seeing that everyone can work on their step in the process. People sew at different rates, so that is not easy! Every question was answered with kindness. In both classes there were students with almost no experience to 50 years of sewing. Everyone seemed to increase her skills and confidence! I will be going back for more!
To start, I contacted Ellie to explain what my needs were and she was able to respond in a timely manner to explain what would be the best approach. It was very easy to purchase my lesson online and we were able to promptly schedule my 2 hour lesson.Ellie is a natural instructor! Coming from being a teacher myself, thats saying something! She was able to quickly assess my needs during my private lesson and utilize our time efficiently so that I walked away with so many tips and tricks, I had no doubt it was a wise choice to go with a two hour lesson.Ellie was friendly, knowledgeable, and was able to build off of my current sewing skills to create a valuable and fun experience! If you are debating whether or not you would like to take the plunge and either learn the basics of sewing OR build on what you already know, look no further!!!I know that this was not the last lesson I will take from Ellie. I cant wait to learn more!!
Made the Maywood tote and had a blast! I have practically no experience sewing and Ellie, the instructor, made the whole process extremely manageable and fun. She was great for accommodating to different skill levels and keeping everyone engaged and on task. My wife and I are definitely planning on going back soon.
I have taken 3+ sewing classes from Ellie at Klum House and couldnt be happier. Her classes have the perfect blend of direction and inspiration that is hard to come by.My interests were to not only learn how to sew, but to sew well - so that I had the confidence to tackle a variety of projects at home. The things I learned:- All things sewing machine related + problem solving- Bag construction + professional looking seams- Hardware application- Working with different types of fabrics and their needs- Sewing lingo & supportive tools- Most importantly: Confidence in a new skill!Life is busy and I just wanted to find a place I could escape to for a few hours, be creative, and come out with a beautiful new project. Ellie has given me the confidence to tackle this new skill with ease and Im always excited to see what new classes/projects she is offering. You should too!------Update - it has been over a year since I began taking Klum House classes and I still enjoy all of the class offerings. Bag making has become a hobby of mine and Ive branched into garment construction thanks to Klum Houses expanding skill classes. Looking forward to more classes in the future - thank you!
Ive really enjoyed all the BYOB classes Ive taken with Ellie at Klum house. She collaborates with some incredible people, and makes really cool products! Her passion for teaching and helping small business owners is inspirational. Highly recommend getting involved with her and her events!
I really enjoyed the sewing class I took with Ellie. She is an incredible teacher who is patient, really takes the time to make sure you understand every step and why you do things, and has a strong interest in helping you succeed. I loved the location of the class, it is extremely convenient and is also a great creative environment to be in. She gave me the confidence to take on more projects and just try things! I am now working on so many projects at home and with the skills she taught me, am able to make some pretty cool stuff that I never would have thought I could make!
Ellie is awesome!!! I showed up excited and slightly anxious to make a utility tote and left two and half hours later with a super awesome and durable tote bag that I made myself! I urge you to go to a class or sign up for a private lesson and Im confident that youll have a great time and really learn how to sew/make something rad.
Ellie is the best teacher. I found her while looking for ways to learn introductory skills for sewing, leather work, etc. and both of the classes I have taken have been perfect for that. She is fun, to boot. Highly recommend KLUM HOUSE and the doors it opens for newbies to the making world! :)
I have taken three classes with Ellie now and each has been absolutely great! I have learned so much, am so much more comfortable with a sewing machine now, and have left with super cute, well-made bags. I would recommend Klum House to anyone and will continue taking classes myself.
I first started taking Ellies sewing classes and she has seen my business journey from idea to final launch and Im so grateful for all her advice and guidance in the past few months. The BYOB workshop series has been invaluable! Thank you!
Ellie is an amazing teacher for sewing, and life! I have taken one sewing class with her, and learned not only how to make a backpack (so cool!), she explicitly taught the skills in a way that I feel comfortable using them for other sewing projects on my own. Her teaching style is thorough and very easy to understand. If you want to learn how to sew, this is the place!
I have taken two classes with Ellie- the portsmith tote/zippered pouch and a duffel bag last year. I think shes an excellent teacher and very thorough in her instructions, making sure her students understand exactly how and why every component of sewing machines work. I truly appreciate her dedication to her craft and keen attention to detail. I think her classes can be improved, however, if she were more open to students bringing their own material and/or changing small elements to their liking. This would encourage students creativity and allow them to incrementally gain confidence in their own design choices, which I believe is the vision of the workshop. I realize there is also an intensive bag design class available, but the same mentality could be applied at a smaller scale for students with a special interest or advanced skills within the same class. Being able to adapt to the differences of each student, being a teeny bit less rigid (though I do love structure!), and employing a co-creation/collaborative approach would truly take these workshops to the next level. I love the space and the concept and hope to see Klum House take off! Im so proud of what Ive made and learned here, and only want to share the experience.
Sewing is easier than what I thought.Thank you Ellie, thank you Klum House.I have no experience, never touch sewing machine, never thought I would want to learn, but after just one class, I have decided that I want to buy a sewing machine and start sewing!!
Elli is a wonderful teacher and even if you feel intimated by sewing your own goods she will explain with her calm and open personality, every single step and you will suprised what you can achieve and how much fun sewing can be.All her crafting classes are amazing and i always recommend to try one of them.
Ellie is thorough, experienced, and fun! I highly recommend working with her. Plus her space is RAD. -HT
Great environment in! Ellie is an amazing teaching. And that little dog Winston is to much.
The Klum House is fantastic! Great instruction! Great support and inspiration! We are lucky to have such a great resource in Portland!
I bought a lesson at Klum House with literally no previous experience in sewing. Started with the one-on-one industrial machine lesson with Ellie, which was extremely informative and I highly recommend it in the case that you are looking to sew bags, heavy-fabric garments, etc...Shes got an awesome studio, very clean with dozens of machines (both home and industrial) and she is very well versed in all things sewing.I also took the canvas apron workshop, which is a great course for those with varying levels of experience. Awesome apron!More recently finished up a portside duffle bag workshop at Klum, which turned out awesome. Shes extremely methodical, which helps for someone still earning his/her stripes on the machine.I recommend any class from Ellie - sure to be fun, informative, and youll walk away with something useful that you made.
I took the backpack sewing class and had a great time learning and playing with the waxed canvas. I look forward to another class!
This is the second class I have taken and both were excellent!!. I am looking forward to taking the duffel bag class next.
The BYOB Workshop series has been an amazing experience for new business owners
Their BYOB workshops are great! The SEO workshop was very detailed and extremely helpful!
I took a basic sewing course here to tackle some personal projects Ive accumulated over some time. First, the class fulfilled its intention: Having entered the room with ZERO experience and an inability to distinguish a sewing machine from an ice box, I left the room having resolved the aforementioned personal issues and the added skill of being able to setup and use the machines basic operations (straight stitch, zig zag, problem solving and material basics). For $48, thats getting quite a bit. However, thats only part of why Im giving 5 stars. I mean thats rare in itself to walk away from something feeling like you didnt overpay, but the friggin sprinkles on my cupcake were the staff, the space and the overall experience. I didnt get a chance to meet the owner, but due to a registering snafu I was able to talk with her on the phone - during which time she patiently STAYED ON THE PHONE WITH ME (happily, I might add) while I re-signed up for the class. Later that night, one of her staff led the show. Now, I brought my own machine (more of a prank than a gift from my mother) instead of using one of the shops newer, more capable machines. The instructor spent as much time helping and translating what she was teaching to my machine as she did with the course as a whole. That really made a great experience for me. The shop was clean, well-organized and even inspiring. I would enthusiastically encourage anyone and everyone to take a course here. I hopefully will be returning to up my stitch game...*thanks Klum house :P
I had an amazing time at the SEO for Entrepreneurs class! So happy I went!
Great SEO Optimization class in partnership with RACC - thank you!
