Doing their communities right for their musical needs, offering quality instruments, service, and lessons for all levels for nearly 100 years. Every customer is given the full attentions of the staff. Was assisted with my vintage snare, properly diagnosed, and not let out of the store until it was all done right and just so. You are taken care of at Portland Music Company
I usually have a good experience when I go here. The staff is friendly and helpful, and theres a good selection of guitars, music books, and odd instruments. I do wish they had some cheaper keyboards though. They only had one that was less than a grand.
We visited many music stores in search of the right electric guitar to replace one that broke. Once we stepped into this Portland Music Company location, we felt well taken care of and even catered to. First, we found a great guitar here, after trying out many of them. There was absolutely no pressure or trepidation from Matt, the manager who helped us, about our difficulty making a choice. He even offered great advice on how to choose. Second, Matt was a deep well of great information and we learned some important info. Third, he was able to adjust the guitar to produce the best sound possible and it made a world of difference. We loved our experience here and will be going here first, even though we live in Washington, for future music needs. Thanks, Matt!
Very friendly the staff got me to the person I needed to help with my violin. His name is Matt as well he fitted my bridge, fixed the nuts, and tuned it all for a reasonable price. I highly recommend Portland Music Company.
I bought a set of bass strings, and took them home to re-string my bass. During the process, the string snapped and left me with the last 3 strings of the kind in the store. I called and talked to somebody at the store, and we both came up with the conclusion of replacing the string with another of a different brand. When I showed up later, he gave me a whole new set of strings. I really recommend this local music store!!
Matt at Portland Music Company was very very helpful finding me a couple baritone ukulele books. Great young man and knowledgeable! I will definitely be back to this music store.
Matt is seriously the man to go to! I have been shopping here for years. When I first met him and had several questions regarding pedals, guitars and amps he always gave me real and honest advice.I drive out of my way to go and shop here solely for his and the company’s customer service! Thanks y’all!
Always love stopping by this store. The manager and staff are incredibly knowledgeable and helpful. Kind, quick, and friendly customer service. This is my go to shop for everything music.
Love this place, amazing, friendly, informative staff.
This is the best music store in the country.Matt is a rockstar and will always help you get what you need. No need to go to the big guitar store anymore
One of the best and Id say most helpful and resourceful music stores within Portland. Definitely recommend these guys, theyre always willing to work with my aunt whenever she is needing any kind of repairs done on any of her instruments mainly being her guitars. But they always keep their work with helping her reasonably priced and easy to have paid off.
Shop here first! Amazing company. Phenomenal crew. Milwaukie location spent 2.5 hours assisting my teen with an electric guitar purchase. Richard then drove it closer to me for pickup at the Division location. Matt and staff scheduled us for 30 minutes for anything we wanted (store is by appointment only, so call ahead). They are knowledgeable musicians who genuinely care about your experience and success.
Ive been buying for PMC for years. They always have great staff. Especially Matt at the division store he truly is an asset to the company. Very friendly informative and follows Thur with his word. Thank you for many years of fantastic service gang!!!!
I came here to get my instrument repaired (mandolin) and they gave me a starting price for the repair, when my mandolin was taken in and repaired, it had more problems then initially intended, so the work that went in was going to cost more then the initial price, but when I got the mandolin back they held to their original price and the mandolin was fixed to an exceptional degree, very good service, good selection of equipment too.
Best music store in the area! I live in WA and drive into Oregon just to see my guys Matt & Nic. They’ve guided me through my pedal and guitar journey and have always given me the best customer service. Above and beyond service!I’ve bought most of my pedals and guitars here and that won’t change. Great selection of just about anything you would ever need! Bitchin’ selection of pedals, anything from entry level to the abnormal. If they don’t have it Matt & Nic will point you in the right direction!Cheers!
My wife and I have come to this store a few times and is by far my favorite music store. The staff is very friendly, helpful, and knowledgeable. As for the store, they have a nice selection of instruments, good prices, and provide quality services.
I called to get the name of the local Yamaha rep to help me with a problem I had with a Yamaha digital sax I bought from an on line distributor. The manager, Matt, asked some questions and said he would make some calls to learn who might assist me. He called me back later with some suggestions, including returning the horn; which is what I did. I was impressed that he took a personal interest even though I did not buy the instrument from Portland Music. I have been a customer of theirs and will continue to be. Thanks, Matt!
I bought my first guitar from the downtown store in 1985, and my first amp from the Gresham store a year later. Back then, if you didnt have long hair or you were some local kid without much money most places wouldnt give you the time of day. When I bought a Gibson privately in 1987, my grandfather and I immediately took it to the Portland Music in Old Town to see if it was a good deal. I recently refurbished it with parts I bought from Portland Music.I still perform gigs with the SG I bought from the Rockwood store in 2001, and Ill buy my next guitar as well as my daughters from PMC on Division. The staff at the Division store are unpretentious, knowledgeable and awesome. Five stars.
Matt from this store is unbelievable! I called panicked with an urgent issue, prepared to buy an item I didnt need out of frustration. As I was about to get off the phone, Matt offered to walk me through the process of setting up the product that I already had, but couldnt get to function properly. He went completely out of his way, working with me even after the store had closed to make sure everything was in order. This was quite literally the best customer service experience Ive ever had! Thanks again, Matt. I will be making a point to do all of my music-related shopping at Portland Music Company on Division going forward.
Walked in the store and asked if they had a particular brand of string.. the kid working pointed at the wall behind him and said, this is what we have, I said oh, okay, you have this brand, but only in guitar ( I was looking for bass strings). He snapped at me, I said this is ALL we have in stock, to which I responded, and, I dont work here, so thats why Im asking questions. He said I apologize, I wasnt trying to be a d!ck and and asked what I wanted. I said I would shop elsewhere, and the employee proceeded to follow me out of the store once he realized that I was doing this and offered me free strings, which I declined because he knows his customer service was deplorable. I wont be back!
The team was laid back, but totally professional. They had the piece of equipment I needed. After hearing my intended purpose for the equipment, they suggested a different solution to my needs that was a better. There was no pressure to purchase the other option, and were upfront about the cost. Overall a great experience.
As a beginner, walking in was incredibly welcoming. I know little about guitars and amps but the store manager Matt was incredibly helpful and treated me as if we’ve been friends for a while. If I ever need anything regarding my guitar again I’ll be sure to come back to this place. Highly recommended
Great service, very informative. Thanks
Awesome staff and amazing selections. Honestly anything you could want from a guitar store. The prices were great and vary so much. Definitely coming back!
I am absolutely pleased with my purchase at Portland Music Company. I support local business! The customer service I received reaffirmed my decision NOT to go to GC.Nicholas was fantastic! I can’t say enough! An absolute pleasure working with him.Matt was also extremely helpful. Great tips on care for my new Martin. Both knowledgeable in the products they represent.I recommend going to PMC for your music needs. Thanks guys.I am so pleased with my new D-28 !!:)
Cashier was kind we talked about deep things I got a bass guitar strap and picks I will continue to go to that building great service
Super helpful, able and willing to answer a wealth of questions and let you try out instruments. Great variety of instruments and accessories.
The employee was very helpful and courteous
Portland Music Company is a wonderful place full of people looking to assist others looking of instruments and audio gear. The staff help me find accordion sheet music sitting Ive stuggled to find on my own.The companies policies in respect to the Covid-19 Pandemic creates one of the safest businesses I have interacted with during this time.
The guys at this store are the nicest around! I could talk to Matt, Nick, and Kyle all day long about gear. Other local Portland music stores have this too cool for you attitude and they often dont take me seriously as a female musician. I highly recommend stopping in and shopping around, you will be pleasantly surprised by the helpful and funny staff. Theyre cute too ;)
The staff was so friendly, knowledgeable in the products and help me find the product that I needed. Unfortunately the product that I want wasn’t available at that time, so he try to show me something smilies product within my price range. Had a great customer service experience 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻
I have been doing business with Portland music company since 2000. No arrogant or pushy sales people there. Good old fashioned customer service, and reasonable pricing.
I dont like the street access on Division Street, but prices are good and the selection is good enough and the have some things you cant find at GC.
The staff of this store need to be a little more cognitive of how they interact with customers. Today, my sister was looking for a banjolele. We were told that we ought to keep in mind that they need to sanitize everything we touch as we looked at instruments, asking us in essence not to touch anything. This immediately turned my sister off. If theyre more worried about the burden imposed by customers than they are of making sales, it isnt going to make people come back. We bought an $8 item and scuttled out of there and are on our way to artichoke music instead. If you are so worried about having to sanitize things people touch, put a bottle of hand sanitzer by the door and tell your staff to not worry about having to make an effort at all.
Was heading downtown Portland on my quest to find the perfect Telecaster. Was at a stop light on division in one of the more unsavory parts of town, and looked over, saw Portland Music Company had a store here. Debated on whether or not I was asking for trouble parking my car there. Decided to hop inside and was met by an amazing store with incredible inventory. What a shock! Was helped out by an employee named Kyle who not only was helpful, knowledgeable, and accommodating, but also extremely pleasant. Ended up leaving with a great find on a special edition telecaster that was almost $200 under list price. Definitely will go back, and highly recommend this place to anyone looking for guitars or related equipment.
Just wanted to pop on here to review my favorite music store in Portland. Not only do they have a great selection of products and a comprehensive layaway plan, but the employees are stellar. So far I’ve met Matt, Nick and Kyle; talk about top notch human beings. Patient, unpretentious, warm and welcoming. Might I add the most knowledgeable staff I’ve ever encountered. You can tell these guys live and breathe music; their passion is palpable. Don’t give any poor reviews that show up in this thread any credence. Some people are just looking to have a bad time, and there’s nothing anyone, not even the saints that work at this location, can do about it. Any visit made to the Portland music company on division will leave you feeling rejuvenated and inspired!
The employees here have always been incredibly helpful and kind. Ive stopped in a few times over the years, most recently while learning guitar. Everythime I stop in Im quickly greeted and asked if there is anything they can do to help me, and if they are all busy with other customers, then to let me know they will be with me as soon as they can.The space is friendly and welcoming for those who would like to pick up the guitars around the shop and play a little bit. They seem to be pretty decently knowledgeable about their instruments and have guided me on learning how to properly care for and maintain my own.I will continue coming here for my general music playing needs.
Good selection of gear, helpful friendly staff, will generally match competitor prices.
Nicest folks! Well informed. Great selection.. and a super layaway plan. 10% down. 10% a month for 10 months. Makes higher ticket purchases attainable.
Went in to ask about strings for a guitar i bought at a hawk shop. Guy was very helpful and friendly. Didnt try to over sell me and was very very knowledgeable about everything. Jonathan i think was his name. Great guy. Kudos.
The staff was very attentive, friendly and know their stuff..I went to another..famous Music store and they make you feel like they are doing you a favor be even speaking to you.Not here..Both guys I talked to listened to what I needed and were in no hurry to get rid of you like other stores.Id even go again just to hang out with them..Will definitely go back.
Instrument rental at Portland Music Company is pretty convenient. They have a good selection of woodwind Reed brands as well. The staff are helpful and knowledgeable. In my experience, if they didnt know the answer to my question, they worked to find the answer.
So, yesterday I wanted to get my ukulele restrung and check out some ukuleles for a possible purchase. I went to tye Portland Music company on Division. I caught the bus there, made a quick stop at the Metro PCS to buy a charger, and afterwards I walked over to the music store, which was right next door. A sign on the window said open but the door was locked with a sign on the door reading: on lunch break until 2:45. It was close to 2:45 but not exactly. I look in the window to see if anyone was there. I didnt see anyone. I was about to walk away when a man opens the door. I ask him: do you guys restring ukuleles? He says: Yes, but were backed up for two weeks. I said: Oh, you cant restring a uke. He said: Its just that were backed up for two weeks and understaffed. I left thinking that was weird. When I got home and charged my phone, I gave them a call. The same guy answered. ( I put on my professional white voice) I asked: Hi. Are you guys open? He said: Yes. I said: Do you guys restring ukuleles? He said: yes I said: Do I need to make- and before I finished my sentence he interrupted with: just come on over and well restring it for you. I said: Now Im a little confused. I was just there was told I couldnt be helped. He said: Oh, that was me. It was just that we were on lunch break at the time. I said: Thats not what you told me. You didnt say were on lunch. You said that I wouldnt be helped because you were backed up. He said: Oh, Im sorry for the miscommunication. I said: But thats not what you told me. In my experience when an establishment denies me services to my face but tells me something different over the phone its usually because Im black. Is that why you didnt want to help me? He said: Oh, no it wasnt that. It was because I was on lunch break. I said: But thats not what you told me. You didnt say anything about a lunch break. You said you couldnt help me because you were backed up. He then put me on hold so he could talk in his office. He then asked for and I qoute: An opportunity to redeem himself. He then started talking about how much he loves music and how much he wants everyone to love music. He then apologized for hurting my feelings ( my feelings were not hurt. I was annoyed at being inconvenienced.) He then offered to restring my ukulele for free with the caveat that he might need to stop in the middle of it to help another customer. ( as if I was unfamiliar with the concept of customer service) i declined his offer and told him to reconsider the way he talks to people. The whole thing ruined my Saturday. You definitely lost a customer.
I had an amazing experience with this company! I was on tour and decided to shop local and I’m really glad I did. The manager Matt was so kind, professional and helpful. Will definitely support this business again.
These guys are great. Matt was very helpful in my amp selection and let me take my time. The guitar and amplifier selection is really good and everyone is friendly and knowledgeable. Give these guys a chance and quit buying from the big box store and buy from a locally owned place. They try to be competitive and will usually work with you if they can.
Great store, great selection and great prices. Best music store Ive found between Portland and Seattle. I will be doing my future instrument shopping here.
Went in looking for some used drum gear didnt find what I was looking for but picked up some drum sticks.while I was at the check stand I saw some cool stickers . I asked the guy how much they were he said they were free. I said all cool how many can I take he said one ! I said oh do you mind if I take a couple for my kids? he said no one per customer I said really can I just have a couple for my kids ? he said absolutely not one per customer!! this guy was the biggest douche bag Ive ever met in my life I understand that if you are a struggling musician living in your moms basement making nine dollars an hour. I get it but dont take it out on the public I will never go to this place again !! Free stickers ?????
This is a great little hole in wall store. They have pretty much everything you need, or can order. They even always have that one guy in the store who plays all the expensive guitars like he is playing to a sold out amphitheater, but leaves without buying anything. They also dont charge outrageous amounts for repairs. I had to get the bridge put on my cello and they didnt charge me anything, but I think the going price is 15 bucks for small repairs.
Have been going here for years. They have a large selection of instruments and gear from beginner to high-end professional level. This is valuable in and of itself, because youll get a much better idea about what you want from actually trying out and comparing similar instruments/ amps/ whatever than you ever will browsing online. So what you walk in the door thinking you need may be completely different than what you walk out with... and that is good! The staff is friendly and seems pretty knowledgeable, but better than that, they are VERY PATIENT, which allows you to make a choice (or not) on your own time without feeling pressured.
One of my favorite shops! The guys that work there rock!
I can usually set up my guitars with mixed results depending on the guitar itself and how much work it needs. I wound up getting a nice Ibanez 7 string Premium with a Floyd and didn’t EVEN want to try and set it up lol. So I brought it in and they’d set it up exactly how I’d asked and it’s played like a dream since I took it home. They definitely know what they’re doing. Thanks guys! Wish I remembered the guys name that worked on my axe but I do know he’s the manager. Thanks man! Well worth itUPDATE: Had her back for a week.now and have been playing it freaking HARD. I’ve never had a Floyd I could abuse like a hard tail. I bite those strings hard and have a heavy hand. I know this axe was difficult to get set up, so kudos for having it set up so solid it hasn’t budged on me and to Ibanez for making a beautiful guitar that stays in tune and I can play every note up the neck with ease.
I try to come here whenever I can. They’ve set up my guitar properly and they have a friendly staff. Matt is a very helpful individual and has a great knowledge when it comes to a guitar set up.
Ive been to this location quite a few times and have always had great experiences. Today Id like to compliment Matt, Gunnar, and Greg for helping me out today. They were knowledgeable, friendly, and very easy to talk with. Thanks!
Visit the store just today by accident after Ive seen few more stores. The best store Ive seen, with a huge collection of guitars. The manager and the worker are very helpful and knowledgeable. Great store and great stuff with great prices !
Best music store in Portland by far! Went here quite a few times for guitar bits, and bought my banjo here.
The store manager, John, and two employees that assisted me today were outstanding. They were all very knowledgeable and helpful. I didnt end up buying anything, but the next time I need a guitar, I will go to this store first.
Great place to find music sheets, music instruments, music accessories, mics and amps, super friendly staff, great location, easily to spend hours here!
Very informative, but a little slow on customer service.
We absolutely love this place. We have been in 6 or so times and every time they are very knowledgeable and helpful. From harmonicas to guitars and picks they have had everything we wanted. We will be back.
My son takes drum and piano lessons here and I take guitar lessons. They do great with both of us although my son is picking it up quicker than I am.
Every time I make a high dollar purchase I will be driving out of my way to come here! These guys are great to work with and have great prices. I am more then happy with the guitar and combo amp Ive purchased and will be in for more.
Friendly, helpful and safe.
Really cool selection, good prices, and very helpful employees. I bought a blues junior from here and Im very happy with their service. Nothing bad to say about this place.
Tough music business selling a guitar in this this day and age everybody orders exactly what they wa nt onine and its here in two days I feel sorry for Portland music because I know its just suffering guitar buisnesses great service please support this business
I go out of my way to come here because the guys are helpful and friendly. I find that with a lot of guitar shops in Portland they are very snobby and think they’re cooler than you. Not here.
My wife and I went in looking for a Ukulele and ended up buying two. Brandon and Johns patience and knowledge of their products was excellent. They also have a wide selection of guitars (that are reasonably prices) and sound great. I brought my 6 string guitar of 3 year old in to have checked out. What a difference. Brandon make some adjustments to the neck and it sounds like the day I purchased it..maybe better. I really appreciate the time spend helping us out! Thank you!
Wonderful and knowledgeable people. Very kind and not pushy.
They are a great group of folks who consider all customers family whether you just buy a 25 cent guitar pick or full drum kit everyone is treated the same way like family GREAT GROUP OF PEOPLE AND LOWEST PRICE FOR BASS STRINGS NO JOKE please do yourself a solid and check them out
They always have just what I need... most recently, note decals for a piano keyboard!
Awesome little spot, was going to make the drive to guitar center but thought to check online to see if anythings closer and so glad I did! They have great helpful staff, and a good selection.
I get my strings, picks, leads, you name it, the have it! Dang good repair service 💪. Ill be back.
Amazing customer service and attention to detail! Exceptional and knowledgeable staff as well!
I ended up getting great service and appreciate the staffs attention to detail.
Great place.Good selection of musical items.Helpful staff.
I accidentally almost unstrung my banjo and it was so out of tune that I could figure out which way to tune it! Luckily Portland Music Co. was super awesome and re-tuned my banjo for me for free! Plus their strings are super cheap! Awesome customer service!!
Portland music co is a great place for many needs. The people there are wonderful and the prices and expertise is great!
Very friendly and helpful. These folks know their stuff when it comes to guitars. Very well stocked.
Good service with Covid precautions.
Very nice place. Lots of options and instruments. Pleasant staff. Not pushy. Not judgemental.
Great place, great pricing on instruments. We had a great experience taking guitar lessons here as well!
Dont give out good deals
They are always so friendly and helpful when I come in. Im not a huge spender, but they still treat you the same either way!
Great local place that I hope stays in business for years to come.

Staff is not as douchey as other music stores. Clean store, and decent selection of guitars, except there were no Gibsons :(

Very nice well stocked music goods.
I have never experienced better customer service from music stores or any store, than I do at Portland Music Co. I wish I lived there and those guys that worked there were my kin.
