Latoya, the storage manager went above and beyond multiple times for my family. I had some issues and needed emergency storage when my family first arrived in Portland, and she made sure I had the size unit I needed as well as fixed any inconveniences with top notch customer service. Chris as well was helpful, positive, and generally a great guy to chat and deal with.The local employees taking such immaculate care of our needs really made our tough move tolerable.
Absolutely disgusting experience. Made a reservation and approached the woman at the front who had a sour look on her face. Told her we were there for pickup and she said your reservation is at a different location. I showed her a copy of my confirmation on my phone, she typed into her computer spun the monitor around and said it’s not for here. Just then my email and text dinged that the location had changed. She said she didn’t have any traitors on the property when we just drove past many on our way in. 116 1 star reviews speaks for its own. She is rude and unhelpful and seemed to be happy to inconvenience people.
This place needs some serious help. The woman in the front dealing with customers is rude, arrogant and impolite. She needs training or a different job, in the back away from the public. We are now going on our third appointment to get a trailer hitch installed, through no fault of our own. And the manager is missing. Great place, not!
I had an excellent experience at this Uhaul. The manager, Ryan was especially knowledgeable and went out of his way to accommodate our family in the most stressful time of moving. I have rented Uhauls in the past, and this was not just the least stressful, but I have to say, actually even enjoyable, if I’m honest. Because moving is such a highly stressful event, it was reassuring to have the company most prevalent in the moving industry have it be their mission to make it as smooth and simple as possible. The Marginal Way team obviously puts their customers as a priority, and that’s remarkable when dealing with corporations as big as Uhaul.

Glenn and Ryan helped us out so much on our move up from Philly this weekend. I didn’t do my DD on units, we roll in and the unit is too small and on the second floor.... oops. They helped us sort it out and sent us to Saco location with no extra charge beyond the standard for a bigger unit (ie got our 1st month free still & no extra mileage charge on the van). It was busy and 45 min to closing and they saved our day. Seriously saints for juggling 5-10 customers who were all stressed on Mother’s Day without breaking a sweat.
Wasnt even able to talk to anyone....waited 30 mins on hold. just got tired of waiting.
Quick summary: Terrible experience! Avoid this location at all costs! I would give negative 5 stars if I could. Customer service was garbage and they were in no rush to help anyone. Still owe me multiple hundreds of dollars and wont own their mistakes.Long story: I used their UBox service about a year ago when moving from across country to this location. The UBox (with our bed, all our clothes, etc.) GOT LOST during the delivery for almost a week and they put forth zero effort in trying to locate it. Basically said well, tough luck, and moved on. Finally our stuff showed up a week later than it was supposed to. Note that during this time my wife and I were sleeping on the floor, wearing the same pairs of clothes we had packed in our car, and had nothing to cook with because it was all in the UBox. Finally when we got all our stuff, I approached them about giving us AT LEAST some money back (it said in the contract that they would give a couple hundred dollars back for each day the UBox is late). They argued that they wouldnt pay anything and that I would need to call a manager. I called person after person for about a month and each one transferred me to someone else because no one thought they were the ones to owe us money. Finally I got in contact with someone who was willing to take ownership of the situation but when they pulled up my info, the computer said the UBox arrived on time, with no problems, and that I had elected to pick it up a week late!! The man I spoke to said that since I feel like I had been mistreated, he offered me a voucher for their store... AS IF I WOULD WANT TO COME BACK!? Its been a year and I am still furious about this.
I can’t say enough good things about working with Ryan and the team on marginal way. Ryan especially went out of his way to discuss options for a big move that worked for me. He was always responsive, patient, and always made me feel like he was looking out for me during this stressful time. I will continue to use the marginal way uhaul for all of my moving needs in the future!

Jen was a gem. I just got off a 4 day 3,200 mild journey moving cross country and it was a blessing to have her as the final chapter to this experience.When I first got to the store I had a nice gentleman aid me in unloading my trailer. He politely let me know when he would be with me and wasted no time in getting to me for help.He welcomed me to my new home and was kind and enthusiastic about my journey. He directed me inside to discuss any matters I would need assistance with further.That is when I met Jen. I waited in line just a bit, but when I got up to the front I was genuinely at ease. I was all over the place in trying to describe my situation. I was basically spewing out a jumble of mess. She didn’t bat an eye! She remained kind and I appreciate her for it.I let her know about the water that cake in at some point during my move and she directed me to where I need to go to report such things. When I explained to her what had happened at my pickup store she was flabbergasted as to why they didn’t offer me the 5x8 at the 4x8 cost. She took care of matters on this end and I am truly appreciative.She also reimbursed me for the $50 reservation guarantee, which I had no knowledge of. The other store should have at least given me that! Thank you Jen for making my first day in my new home a hassle and worry free one!
We are from out of state & came to this location to refill a propane tank on an RV rental before we could return it. We rang the bell FOUR times over 10 min and no one acknowledged we were there. We went in the building twice & stood in line each time to request someone fill the tank. One employee said hed be with us in a minute, another said they werent certified to fill the propane tank. In total, it took 40 minutes to get the propane filled.They appeared to be severely understaffed. If possible, Id use another location.
AVOID HITCH INSTALL AT ALL COSTS!Have to say one of the worst customer service experiences I’ve ever had. Dealer lost track of the hitch I ordered and never returned calls, emails, or even an update to why this happened. $412 later I had to spend three hours on the phone with customer support, ensuring me I would get a call back to reschedule the install. After zero contact I drove to the location, only be to told the manager has no record of any interaction or information about my order. Four. Weeks. Later.Bought the parts outright and went to Handyman Hitch for the install and lifetime guarantee. Don’t waste your time at this Uhaul location.
Dont pretend that your phone app is anything at all, because it literally slowed the process down. I spent 45 minutes on site between the time I arrived and the time I drove away. What a waste. The sort of lousy service that only a local market monopoly could sustain.
This review is meant to warn others to photograph the mileage on your U-Haul vehicle before you drive off and when you return. The last two times I rented a pick-up truck from this location, I got overcharged for miles I didnt drive - over $100 total for two rentals in 2019 and 2020. Customer support on the phone was very helpful in fixing the situation and refunding my money. But I needed the cell phone photos I took with the date, time and location stamps to get my money back.
Very efficient. Definitely use the on line check in and return. Staff was friendly and helpful. Great location near the highway through Portland, ME. Highly recommended.
I just came from UHaul and I had a great experience. I was greeted as soon as I walked in by a woman (I think the manager) with a smile and a cheery How may I help you today? She immediately guided me to a counter and quickly entered all of my info. She help me decide on the size truck I needed and printed off the receipt. She explained the fee and seemed genuinely interested in giving great service. I only didnt give a 5 star rating yet because I havent picked up the truck yet.

Inadequate staffing, employees always seem flustered, no regard for COVID19 safety or enforcing mask protocol the sign on the door mandates (both employees and customers). Took 3 visits and waiting in line 20+ minutes on multiple occasions to get a basic hitch install done.
Super friendly, courteous, and helpful! I called on the morning we needed the truck and the storage space. We were able to reserve both, and within 30 minutes I was driving the truck to load our stuff. It was that easy. Alan at the Marginal Way U-Haul was the best! It is busy there (especially the last day of the month when everyone is scrambling to move), but I found the whole experience to be much better than I could have hoped for--mostly due to how helpful and pleasant Alan was!
Atrocious customer service. I will not do business with U-Haul again based on how I was treated here.I paid online for a trailer hitch and installation, and booked an appointment. When I arrived for the scheduled appointment (having driven to Portland just for it), the man at the front desk snapped at me, Well, did you call to confirm? I explained that I had not called to confirm because Id received an email confirmation. He told me they couldnt help me today, and that I really should have called to confirm.The appointment was rescheduled three times over the course of a month and each time they were still unable to install the trailer hitch. They then refused to refund my money when I told them I was just going to get a trailer hitch elsewhere, insisting that I had not been charged and they would not have charged me if I hadnt received the goods and services. This is completely untrue — I was charged upfront. I only got my money back by disputing the charge with my credit card company.Avoid these people at all costs.

Previous reviews are very accurate. Service reps work hard but the place has not a shred of operations management. They don’t increase labor when it’s most needed; the “app” you can download to “bypass the line” doesn’t actually do that for you; and the customer line is continually out the door because it takes about 10 min per customer checkout. This should be a simple transaction.
This company is not to be trusted. Until yesterday I might have given them a higher rating, but they put me in a bad position because they did not provide a truck even though I had a confirmed reservation. I was told by a man who clearly does not care about customers that on a busy day like yesterday, theres no guarantee. Of course I challenged that. I had a reservation for 11:00 AM. I got there around 11:30, which was the best I could do, juggling all the many parts (and people) involved in moving.He insisted that I reserved the truck for 2:45 am and was supposed to return it two hours ago, so it was cancelled. I even have the confirmation, and their system clearly shows that it was for 11:00, and that the order is open. He refused to believe me. He said I dont know what you think you did online, but I have it right here. 2:45 AM. Theyre not even open then. He became rude so my frustration elevated beyond my normal professional behavior. I was really stuck.As I called my ride to come back, I saw two trucks right there and a third being returned. I went in to ask and he very rudely told me Not available! I said I had a reservation and he lost it. He waved his hand dismissively and said something like I dont know. I didnt quite catch it. At this point I seriously wanted to hit the guy. This is not how I am, and I cant remember the last time I actually wanted to punch someone, but this total disregard for customers and what he caused was infuriating.Calling customer service accomplished nothing. I ended up getting their smallest truck at a different location two hours later. The people at this party store were much nicer than the actual U-Haul people, and they told me U-Haul causes a lot of problems for them, promising people trucks they dont have.Nothing was done to make this right. I dont even know how to fight them. Im still dealing with the mess they created. My hired help is gone, and Im only half moved due to their incompetence. Never again.
Recently worked with them this past week. Rented a 9’ van to pick something up from Walmart. Drove 20ish miles, they charged me for 135 miles (the rental was only 2 hours) after discussing the issue with the man at the desk, he said he would put the charge on hold until it was figured out. Immediately after I left he billed me for the full 135 miles. Told me he would call once the issue was resolved, never did. Emailed Uhaul, still haven’t gotten back to me. This is half a step above theft. So prepare yourself for this nonsense.
The customer service rep at the counter was very friendly and knowledgeable, but this location is run poorly. There were no employees to be found in the lot or the building for at least 20 minutes. A regular storage customer had the cell phone number of the attendant, which is what brought her in to the counter. I don’t know how long it would have been without the phone call. There were roughly 8 customers waiting at that point with one that had left during the wait.There was no way to access their parking lot because of the way vans had been parked for drop-off although there were plenty of spots for both vans and customer parking in the lot itself. The self-service storage check-in and out system was also down.If I hadn’t prepaid, I would have just left. Overall, they need to hire more staff. One person working on the first Sunday of the month is insufficient, and it’s not a good experience for the customers or the employees. The clerk was doing the best she could all things considered.
Rented a cargo van and a indoors storage unit price on the van was great van was new only 9000 miles on it. Wanted a storage space on 1st floor they tried but I ended up with one on 2nd floor only about 10 steps. Staff was very helpful and friendly everything was clean very easy and happy 😁
Rented a trailer for two days on a one way trip from this location, it took 1.5 hours to pick up the trailer (the gentleman who helped us hook it up was very nice!) The rest of the staff was slow and incompetent. I was informed if I dropped the trailer off a day early that I would receive a refund. U-Haul is refusing to refund me for the unused day. Got the job done but their customer service leaves a lot to be desired.
Five stars for the Portland staff. One star for the lady who doesnt like to pay the staff.
Its too bad this is the only game in town because their service is really awful. The U-Haul website offers the option of online check-in including entering credit card information, etc., but the reality is that you have to stand in line for a really long time to get your van. Like 40 minutes. Then they give you a key for a van that you have to walk all around their lot to find only to discover it is blocked in by other vehicles, then trudge back to office to find someone to get it out. And, they only have two people working there.
One person working the desk at 9am on the first day of the month. Took way too long considering all of the prepay and pre set up you do online. The website didn’t work correctly, so I couldn’t do the mobile check in. I saw them send two people out to get trucks that were blocked in, or were nowhere to be found. Completely disorganized and sloppy.
I just had an experience shockingly similar to Andrew Shuttleworths review.I made an appointment for a trailer hitch installation over the phone. When I arrived for the appointment (driving 30 minutes from Gray) at that date/time I was told the appointment had been rescheduled and they would not be able to do the installation today. I was in no way notified of the change (they had the correct email since I got my appointment confirmation at that email, and they also had the correct phone number on that document). They apologized for their mistake and said I would be receiving a call from their manager later that day. At 6pm I checked online to see their hours since I had not received a call, at which point I noticed Andrews review. Given the similarities in initial experience and the fact that his subsequent appointments were also unsuccessful I decided to preemptively cancel the installation rather than continue waiting for a call.This is a pattern. They are willfully wasting potential customers time, energy, and money. I hope whoever continues to be responsible feels an appropriate amount of shame and embarrassment. Stay away for anything hitch related, and Id recommend avoiding them for any other services to be safe.Differences of note between Andrews experience and mine:- I was not charged ahead of time, they simply placed a hold on my card. I expect that will be removed now that Ive cancelled my appointment- The workers I interacted with were apologetic, reasonable, and didnt attempt to deflect blame onto me. If not for a review with a similar experience I would be attempting to reschedule, but I have no confidence that the next appointment will not also be a waste of my time
Poor customer service! I called to inquire about renting a truck, since I planned on moving to the area. The woman who answered the phone was very rude and didnt seem to enjoy her job. I was nothing but polite and courteous. She sounded like she spoke English very well, but I couldnt understand her on the phone at certain moments because of how she spoke (mumbling?). So I started asking about rates, then she told me very rudely didnt you hear what I said?! As if its my fault she has poor communication skills. Im sorry honey, but I didnt hear it. Get some elocution lessons, if you know what that means. I was very turned off by this experience. Is this your first customer service job? Theres a standard when it comes to phone etiquette. Your attitude on the phone can make or break a deal. Remember that. And looking at the other negative reviews about this property, it looks like youve turned off many others. I wonder how much profit youve lost because of this. Take the hint. Shape up!

Terrible customer service. Tried a few times both truck/trailer rental and trailer install and was disappointed each time. Kept coming back hoping it was a fluke. Each experience was the same. Angry people, short on time, messed up price quotes (one on the phone, another on site - 3 times), and little regard for sticking to the schedule they created (hours delayed for install). Just plain rude. No apologies, no care for whether they were being effective or helpful. Interestingly, they appear to be very focussed on marketing data collection (phone number, address, personal info) before they will even answer phone questions. Seriously? Im calling to find out whether you are open July 4 and you need my address and phone? Ultimately, the manager could care less. I asked how I could contact corporate or customer care for feedback and I was directed on-line rather than provide a number at the main office. Who does that? Blown away by how bad the experience was, not once, but multiple times. Corp has to know about this place? Wow... Never go back.

The received the worst customer service at this U-Haul. Im a regular Van renter and I would not recommend this location. There was misleading information given at the time of the rental and when I discussed this with the manager no responsibility was taken for the confusion. They did not return my phone call in a timely manor and when I ask the manager why it wasnt returned there was no responsibility taken. I asked to reach a compromise that would suit both parties and they were unable to come to the table. This experience took several hours of my time and I will never rent from their faculty again. Please support your local truck rental offices.

Overcharged $200 took 3 hours in person to get a partial refund. Responsibility is on you to take a photo of gas tank n mileage at start n end of rental otherwise they’ll overcharge you. Customer service n general manager Ryan are scammers.
They hooked up our trailer.. said the wiring was wrong and had to swap out trailers.. then when we returned it they said we took the wrong trailer and are currently accusing us of stealing a trailer! How does that even happen when they hooked it up?!? Bill the GM has done Nothing but argue and tell at us on the phone, and has been completely unavailable on any other form of communication. This is Ubsurd!!
Was very good untill my wife noticed a charge on our credit card for fuel and fuel service fee. I intentionally put 3/4 more fuel than I used to get the gas gauge over what I picked it up with just to avoid this. The dishonesty of this just burns me up. When I dropped it off they said they would email me my receipt with todays age that acceptable. I waited around and asked if I was ok and they said yep. I didnt have much time to check my email with all the moving... my wife checked account to see where she last used her debit card she misplaced and saw a 51 dollar charge. 30 dollars for gas and 20.00ish fill fee.
Fast, easy, and reliable. Every time Ive needed a truck, even on short notice, theyve been able to accommodate. If you need extra packing supplies: boxes, tape, locks, blankets, dollies, etc., I would recommend you buy them elsewhere and avoid the premium.Tip: theres a free cardboard box donation bin in the office.
HORRIBLE CUSTOMER SERVICE! All I tried to do was be helpful and report an abandoned Uhaul rental vehicle getting numerous tickets, but after 20 minutes on the phone, and multiple transfers I got nowhere and gave up.

We are a moving service provider and had a ubox pick up and unload ... we made a total of 4 phone calls the day b4 scheduled pick up and even got a phone call back to confirm that the ubox would be ready at 8:30 am ... we arrived at 8:30 am the next day and guess what no ubox was ready and they said that the phone calls didnt matter and he would try to get it ready for 12:00 ... we have a schedule and have other jobs scheduled at that time ... he basically told us too bad. The customer that hired us for this service even called and got the same confirmation of 8:30am..Very poor customer service and really dont care about there customers
Dont expect apologies for late parts or failure to call you to prevent you from showing up to an appointment when said parts are not in. In fact expect some snarky remark like, Dont mean to sound like a jerk, but we cant install the part if we dont have it. Also, when they say they will call you when that part comes in...they wont. You have to call them only to find out the part has been in for a while and they will not try and squeeze you in given you have now waited weeks due to their failure. Again...no apology, that isnt how they roll. Amazing that they can stay in business actually, but that is how it is when you have a monopoly.

Very unprofessional service. Totally unacceptable. Their customer care sucks. They cut me off when talking and asking me what can we do? I was on the same call for 40 minutes with 4 different agents who had no clue and did not even tried to help. This is the worst experience one can have
Felt as though I was over charged for gas fee. I was charged $12.75 with their rate of $4.25 per gallon used and not replaced. I drove 19 miles so either the truck gets terrible gas mileage and should be looked at or I was overcharged. I hauled a small load of 300lbs so weight would not have been a huge contributor to that. Really wasnt too bothered until I asked about it and was immediately met with resistance. After reading other reviews I guess I should have expected it but it was an emergency and not much I could do.

Easily the worst experiences Ive had in regards to both truck rental and storage. The staff comes across as condescending, chauvinistic, and dismissive. Im frankly surprised that they remain in business. The storage space is very poorly lit, and their idea of climate control is to have the building feeling cold and damp. I also sincerely appreciated that there is only one stairwell to get to the second floor of the storage facility, and no elevator for moving large or cumbersome items. Upon moving out of the facility, I requested to be present for the inspection of the space and was initially ignored. When I asked a second time I was told Um...No. If youre choosing to use a storage facility in Portland, spend a few dollars more and go elsewhere. This was an unfortunate choice on my behalf, and I urge others not to make the same mistake.
Hands down worst customer service I’ve had in years. The manager, Bill, flat out called me a liar then yelled at me in front of other customers when I suggested that might now be a good customer service route. If you need a UHaul rental, find another location. All other staff courteous but that guy is a class 1 douchebag.
Had a trip set up fr 4000 miles. Got the 5*8 trailer. Half way through the trip, it started to lock up on one side. Paid 800 bucks plus insurance. Got delayed multiple times. Around Georgia called for help and was told insurance doesnt cover anything. And all I could do was to get a new contract. Another 500 bucks. Very rude and indifferent to the situation. Had to pay a random mechanic for work on tráiler. Rented from them multiple times. But this was the worst.

Its Uhaul - expect to get screwed in every way and you wont be disappointed. But they do their best here with what corporate spits on them.
Only place to really drop off and pick up with storage too, but a real good group of guys and quick to help. Fast and easy drop off and storage set ups. Only flaw is Uhauls nasty design of no elevators for you and only stairs to the second floor storage. Free month storage with a uhaul move but that is always the kicker at each uhaul storage. Stairs!
This is the best Uhaul in southern Maine. I had a truck reserved at another Uhaul facility, the one on Warren Ave in Portland. They were terrible, and told me to go to the Marginal Way facility, so I did. William Guidon at the Marginal Way store listened to my problem, found a solution, and everything worked out. Dont go to the Warren Avenue facility, use this one.
This location I have done business with for over 20 years. Jim the manager to Al the hitch doctor and Alan and the complete staff of this location are a pleasure to do business with. Keep up the good work !!!

There is no elevator, not fun if you end up on the second floor. $13 to buy their special lock to lock the unit. No light in the storage unit. Unfinished sheet rock at the top of the unit got my things dirty. Overall, not a great experience. However, they do have some very nice people who work for them.

Contradicted themselves, used a vehicle to tow a trailr, go back later to rent again and now tell me the vehicle is incompatible, THEY LOADED IT before and now refuse service. Also threatened to fine us for not returning the truck within 3 hours even though we reserved for 24 hours.
Sat in line for 30 minutes beyond the time I was scheduled to just get the truck, then price that I was quoted and what I was charged were two total separate things. U-Haul makes no effort to tell it’s consumers this apparently. Or this establishment is just trying to pull one over on consumers. Either way wouldn’t surprise me, but normally when you reserve something for a specified period of time and are quoted for that amount of time, it doesn’t not just double because it was technically 2 rental periods. Absolutely ridiculous experience, do not go here unless you want to be ripped off.
The staff was friendly and they had the truck we reserved, but it is quite ridiculous that they charge by the mile AND for fuel. In what world does that make sense? In every other civilized setting, its gas OR mileage, but our $39.99 truck rental just billed out at over $90 and an extra $25 to fill it. Its quite ridiculous. What a scam.
My problem was not with Uhaul, staff, vehicles or location. My problem is with who they recommend as movers. Southern Maine Movers . Mike Bolduc the owner, would not own a mistake, and just started to harass the customer. Even went so low as to Facebook stalk her. Not only will I not recommended this company. I will go out of my way to tell people how bad this company is.
The service counter is an absolute joke. Even at peak hours they only have one person at the desk. I waited in line for over an hour.

First time I went to uhual the experience was terrible, and the second time I had a paper license with all the info in it and the guy didn’t even try to put it in just told me he couldn’t accept it.
I had 2 good experiences and 1 bad one. Owner was very responsive and called back

Very lazy staff its almost comical and the place stinks so dont store anything you care about because it will stink when you get it back

Its got the trucks you need but service is slow.
They gave me damaged car and now I am left chasing the issue.DONT TRUST THIS OUT LET PEOPLE. INSPECT AND TAKE PICTURES AND MAKE SURE YOU HAVE IT MENTIONED UNDER YOUR CONTRACT.NEVER USING THIS COMPANY AGAIN.
