Only ever been in here for surf-related needs and these guys are always well stocked. Definitely the best equipped surf store in the Portland area, these guys have solid wetsuit rentals for decent prices, just about all surf gear/ accessories you might need (including a great range of fins), and an absolutely fantastic collection of surfboards for sale from a range of incredible shapers. Staff are super friendly and helpful.

Tried to purchase a wetsuit and pay for it over the phone so I could pick it up this weekend. Since you know I have a job and cant just drop everything.They told me they were saving it for locals. I am local! I guess what they mean by local is they are saving it for their regular customers. They clearly dont want new customers. Would have been cool to find a new surf shop since I need a new board too. Take your business somewhere that actually wants it.

I can only say good things about this place and staff. As a first time buyer of a wetsuit, I was overwhelmed with choices and usually have trouble buying anything since Im a tall woman. The staff were super helpful and knowledgeable, making sure to check on me when I came out of the changing room and see how things fit. They were also patient and awesome dealing with me since I was so indecisive and tried on a handful of suits to figure out my fitting. I tested out the suit and lets just say it went swimmingly ;)

Ive been here a few times. Very helpful and knowledgeable staff. I came in with a big gouge in the base of my snowboard and no knowledge of how to repair it. Instead of upselling me, they talked me through the process of how to repair it myself and answered all my questions. Ill definitely keep coming back.

Gorge Performance is my go-to local surf shop. The folks at the shop are both knowledgeable and super friendly. Time and again in my dealings with them they have gone above and beyond to provide great service. Most recently they helped to fix up one of my boards I was selling and wrote a great description to help sell it -- all just as a bonus. I have been going to Gorge Performance for years and will continue to be a loyal customer because of the great and personable service I know I can count on.

I recently purchased my first wetsuit, and was absolutely blown away by the customer service here! Kim was SO attentive and helpful in finding a suit that worked for me! It’s a little difficult not being able to try on wetsuits in the store right now, but Kim assured me I would be welcome to exchange as many suits as I needed until I found the right one. Overall, super knowledgeable and respectful staff, and I will definitely be back for other surfing-related purchases. Freaking stoked!!

I broke one of my fins on my quad and I needed to get two rear fins. I didn’t care about how performant the fins were — just needed something to stick to my foamie!These guys were super helpful in finding me some used fins without putting any pressure on me to buy a complete set of 4 / spend more money on a new set.But in having such great customer service and helping me save money, they now have a new customer who is going to spend a lot of money here for years to come!

Totally amazing. Made my dream come true. I am based in New York City and was searching for a 2016-2017 Burton Custom X online for a few months because I liked the shape better than this years model, but couldnt find anything. I stumbled upon Gorge Performances site and they had one with a 30% discount - the board of my dreams at a discount, how amazing. I was hesitant to believe that this was real though because I couldnt find a camber version any where else. The reviews online convinced me that Gorge is legit. I placed the large order online to be sent here. I get a call a few minutes later from Gorge asking about my address because I accidentally input it wrong - can you believe that? They were SOOOOOO nice, helpful, and reassuring. Today my board came from across the country and its in amazing condition. You wouldnt have known that I didnt pick it up from a store down the road. Ive been in the shop a few times over the last few months. There was a weekend when I completely spaced returning a rental, and they were very understanding. When I was ready to buy a wetsuit, they were definitely the people I wanted to give my business to and I wasnt let down. The customer service was perfect, no pressure, just useful information and a helpful attitude. Also great selection in the store. Would recommend the shop to anyone.

I sold my used surfboard through Gorge Performance and then bought a new one from them. They took care of me through the process and ensured I got what I needed and wanted. Their excellent customer service carried through even seven years later since I moved out of state and they have still gone above and beyond to help out one of their old customers. First off, I would like to commend the staff; they were incredibly nice and knowledgeable (Im new to surfing) and helped a ton. There was no pressure to buy anything, they were happy just helping a newbie out.Secondly; The shop is ridiculously stacked with all kinds of board sports, it was incredibly diverse and they had everything anyone could need. They had stock on everything, used boards, new, all lengths and sizes - and thats only just for the surfboards.I will absolutely be coming back again and again, I recommend anyone to visit.

I went in here knowing nothing about what to buy my boyfriend for surfing for his birthday. Total amateur hour. The guys that helped me were super nice and so helpful and my boyfriend ended up loving what I got him. They were useful practical but super cool gift ideas. I will go back.

Weve rented wetsuits at this store several times and have always been pleased with them. The store itself makes me want to go on more adventures. They have great brands and quality gear there, and I liked several of the clothing options they carry. The staff was really helpful and friendly.

I love this place! The owners absolutely ROCK!!! Whether it is paddle boarding for summer fun, one of there great outings which you must do, or taking a lesson, there is no one better to go to in Portland.They also have great winter sports boarding and skis. Huge selection, huge knowledge, huge service. New and used. Fantastic SUP stuff. I hadnt been here in awhile. Im getting healthier and back into water sports. Went in for what turned out to be a $4 purchase. Staff still treated me like a vip customer. Went back and bought more stuff I could possibly have gotten elsewhere. Loads of surfing help and products which is hard to find this far east of the beach. And lots of heart, too.

I have purchased my last three snowboard and the majority of my gear from Gorge Performance. The staff there are always extremely knowledgeable and friendly. I had an issue with my snowboard and they fought my case with the warranty processing department to ensure that I was happy with my purchase. I will continue to recommend Gorge to anyone I know and I will continue to shop there over online or any other local stores.

Great place to demo an inflatable SUP before buying. Helped make the decision a lot easier and staff answered questions with knowledge and real life experience. Some staff know more about the iSUPs than others; so would keep that mind when asking for help.

Been going here since the very 1st years they opened. Largest selection of surf, SUP, and kite gear in PDX and offer a solid assortment of Snowboards too. Staff actually uses all the gear and can provide expert advice. It is low key, so if you want a mall experience try somewhere else.

GP rocks! This is always our go-to place to get whatever we need for surfing and stand up paddle boarding. The staff is completely knowledgable and incredibly helpful and not pushy. They will take the time to make sure you have the right equipment instead of pushing you to buy the most expensive stuff. If they dont have it in store, chances are they can order it for you! We would rather go here than buy anything online whenever possible.

As a beginning windsurfer, I came to GP to get some technical help with my boom & mast. I got assistance from an older gent (I believe the owner) who checked out my setup and told me everything seemed ok. I explained the issue to him once more, and said that I’m *definitely* going to have problems once I get on the water, but all he could say after fiddling with my setup was, “It looks good.” Really? No empathy, not one suggestion for a creative solution, not even an attempt to sell me some new equipment. I begged to differ and said, “Thanks anyways,” then walked away frustrated (in retrospect, “Thanks for nothing” would have been more appropriate.) As the owner of a bike shop, I have spent way more time troubleshooting much simpler issues with my customers, and I really believe that good advice is worth its weight in gold. Well, today at GP I got no advice whatsoever. It’s sad that this is the only shop that still deals with windsurfing in Portland, but I definitely will NOT be coming back, instead I’ll have to make a trip to Hood River.

The gorge is an excellent shop.It is a little off the beaten path from most of your other Portland shops, but it has a great open air surf vibe with broad selection brands including some that are hard to come by. They also have a huge selection of used surf boards. I bought my wetsuit from there last winter and got a great deal.Recently, they went out of their way to help me warranty a GNU snowboard that I did not even purchase from them which was a great experience. They were honest and up front with me throughout the process and eventually got a new board out of it. The employees are the kind of people that get out and do stuff, and I have seen many of them out on the mountain as well as at the coast. I regularly refer my friends to rent equipment and purchase equipment from the Gorge.Thanks again Rory, Ben, Ricky, Lucy, and Bob for your support!Cheers!

Garbage.Not worth your time, at best.Prices are what youd expect from a local small business (reasonably high)Store is dimly lit and feels dingy.Location is hard to access.Staff is hit or miss. (Had an extremely friendly young man as well as a standoffish, condescending bro.)Customer service is a misnomer!I went surfing for the first time in April: this place came recommended and was close to me. I rented a demo board & wet suit and stated to the employee that I was a first-timer. I counted on the shop properly equipping me for the conditions. As Stephanie W., has also commented on in her Yelp review, I was not offered a hood or gloves, and was essentially unable to surf on the day we went out due to an almost immediate, crippling 3-hour ice cream headache from the cold water.. When I brought this up at the time of return, the employee was rude, defensive, unapologetic, and belittling. He basically told me tough luck, thats your problem for not knowing one was included with your rental and/or asking for it.Baffled at the audacity of someone to speak that way to a customer, I left and emailed customer service that night. I asked if they would consider offering me a discounted or free day of rental, since I essentially paid $80 ($40 rental + $40 gas) to drive to the coast and then spent my day sitting in the rain watching my friends surf because Gorge Performance provided me with inadequate gear.After no response to my initial email for almost 4 months, I followed up with them yesterday. They got back to me within a couple of hours. Customer service responded with more of the same attitude the employee had towards me. Off-point defensiveness, some cookie cutter talking points about being a customer service oriented small business, followed by additional condescending comments about the weather being unpredictable... Look, I know the weather is unpredictable, I LIVE HERE. That is why I paid the shop to equip me for whatever weather comes our way. Then, I can choose to wear the extra gear, or not, depending on the conditions. That said, my friends who surf regularly said a hood is standard for the Oregon coast, and they were dumbfounded that the shop would not include them during the winter months.In their 4-month delayed email, customer service offered me nothing but further repetitive/infuriating condescension, and suggested I come in to the store to talk more about my experience. Based on the way I was blamed for not knowing to ask for a hood and borderline verbally abused by their staff member the last time I was in their store, I will not go out of my way to stop on by so we can talk some more. I dont feel comfortable or safe there, and they were in no way truly concerned or apologetic for my bad experience (which was solely due to their negligence in properly informing/equipping me).Overall, this was an extremely disappointing experience with a local business I was excited to patronize. Maybe this shop doesnt cater to newbies, maybe they dont learn from their mistakes, maybe they want to keep Oregon surfing a secret, or maybe I just hit everyone on an off day...and then another off day 4 months later with the email I received from customer service. Whatever it was, I wont be visiting Gorge Performance again.

I came by to pick up a longboard and the staff were extremely helpful. They helped me figure out what would best suited my needs and let me try out all my options. I am in love with the longboard that I got and am very thankfully to Gorge Performance for helping me pick it out.

I almost bought it directly from the Onewheel website, but learned there would be a 6-8 week waiting period, plus paying taxes on such an expensive product really adds up. I checked their site to see if there were any nearby suppliers (I’m in WA) and I saw that Gorge Performance had a shop in Portland. I reached out and got AMAZING service from Kim and Rory. Not only did I save money in taxes (no sales tax in OR), but they shipped it to me in less than a week at no additional cost to me. They also gave me a killer discount on an accessory. These folks truly care about the customer experience and will receive my business from now on for all my outdoor toys.

Make sure you check your rental equipment before you leave this place. This is my first review positive or negative about any place or thing. My kid recently wanted to rent a racing SUP to enter the Paddle Challenge in Hood River and said Gorge Performance was the place to get a good board. We checked it out earlier in the week and then went back to get his board the night before the race. He took it out Friday night to get used to it and was anxious for the event the next day. He entered the mens open and realized he had a lot of work to do to become competitive. He loved the chance to try this type of race and see some of the pros up close. The car ride back to Portland was filled with a discussion of how cool the experience was and what it would take to get a nice board ourselves. We brought the board back to Gorge Performance and that was where the days cool experience turned sour. One the employees told me where to place the board on the rack with the other boards and said lets go check you in with your paper work. Then he went back to the rack and went directly up to the front of the board and picked at it for a second and said ughh so theres some damage to the top of the board and there is actually a crack in the board. I thought we were on hidden camera. My son said Hey - we didnt do anything to the board. The employee said well we repaired this board recently and this is new. He also stated that it could have happened during the race by another board. I looked at my son and asked of he got hit and he said I guess I could have but I dont remember the front being hit. Since my son was like 75th out of 85 people it wasnt like he was battling around the buoys. I told the employee I felt helpless like I hadnt checked every little dent at a sketchy car rental place and got billed later upon returning the car. His answer was well at least this is a lot cheaper to repair than a car. Obviously missed the point. Anyway-Gorge Performance turned a cool experience with a lot of nice people a little tainted. The board definitely wasnt new when we got it and his paddle had a broken latch that he had to secure with some tape (no big deal) --rentals right? I got charged a little extra and left thinking probably wont be back. Moral to the story is that Gorge Performance looks like a laid back surf shop with a Santa Cruz or Hawaii feel to it--but if you rent from there I would check everything out and maybe even video your board so you are not held responsible for something you didnt do. We babied the board the twenty hours we had it and seriously doubt that we added to the age of the board.
