In 2021 I started to travel a lot for work and everytime Im in a new town I call all the LBSs asking whats in stock. Usually its just the $5000 carbon triathageeks whips left. Because all the more reasonably priced ones have been siezed upon, across the country, as soon as they arrive, like buzzards on road kill.Upon arriving in Richmond the first call I made was to Will and I explained what i was looking for; a 9r with a 1x drive, and that Im 5 8. And hes like i gotchu. I have Rockhoppers Elite and Comp on your schmizse, in stock. In stock I exclaimed. I made it down there pronto.Funny aside, the Lyft driver dropped me at the other LBS two doors down. I looked around, they did not have anything in my range. Deuced out.Anyway, I get into CBC, meet Will and he had what would be my new whip aired up and ready for me to test out in their back lot. I was reaching to hand him my ID, as most shops ask for when doing test rides, but he just took off toward the back and I followed. Cool right?A quick seat post adjustment, and i was off working the single shifter through the range. A couple of manuals out of Wills view and i got the balance of the geometry quickly. These Rockhoppers are well named.I thoroughly enjoyed the experience. Questions were asked and answered well. From front door to back door and riding out the front door was less than 30 minutes, which included a tech giving an inspection and Will adjusting the front fork air suspension to my weight.I also bought a lock so i could explore Richmond with my new baby. Wish Id also gotten a tee shirt.Go. This is what an LBS should be.
Bought my first decent bike here, and I was impressed. Bought my second good bike elsewhere, and I was less than thrilled. Came back here several years later looking to get back into mountain biking. The personnel may have changed a bit, but the helpfulness, friendly-ness and knowledge has only gotten better! Even during the pandemic, they are well organized, quick and fun! Special thanks to Will for getting me rolling out the door on my new Yeti ARC. Seriously, give the dude a raise, or some free, top-shelf gear! Best bike shop around, hands down!
Previously to this trip I had always had a good experiences with Carytown Bikes, but. I went in for a ring upgrade on my S-Works, simple enough or so I thought. The rings I wanted were not available but they could get ones that were close to what I wanted. They installed the ring set and I took it out to the Capitol trail to give it a try. It shifted once from the small ring to the large ring just fine. When it was time to shift back to the small ring, it threw the chain off. I put it back on and it continued down the trail only to for the bike to throw the chain several more times.. I took it back and they only make it worse and worse. Keep in mind this bike always shifted click click click and had never thrown a chain. They said they were going to have to put the original size rings back on the bike on bike,,,, 3 trips later! So I said ok only because I was getting really frustrated with them. It was always something different causing the problem. I decided I didnt want them to work on the bike anymore so I told them to put the rings I had paid for back on the bike and that I would come get it. I got the bike back and took it to another unnamed shop. They said one of the rings was bolted on backwards, they used the wrong bolts and the 2 rings were not compatible with each other and the set up would never work properly. So the unnamed shop ordered 2 rings tuned the derailleur and everything is wonderful. If anyone wants to buy 2 mismatched sram rings I have a set. The new bike shop has a new customer.
Best shop. Super helpful . They love u riding bikes
Went there today (5/9) about an hour before close, and the fellow staffing the front was incredibly helpful. I wish I got his name so I could give him a shout-out! He helped me pick out a new, much more comfy/safe-feeling helmet and some small accessories to start getting back into cycling. At no point did he seem uninterested in helping me; he genuinely appeared to enjoy educating me and was very knowledgeable and super friendly. It was such a nice experience and I didn’t feel pressured into getting the pricier gear. He just helped me find what I actually needed at reasonable prices.I immediately wore the helmet after getting out of the shop and was super stoked at how nice it felt compared to my very old one. I’ll be back to bring my bike in for a tune-up. Thanks guy whose name I didn’t catch, and thanks Carytown Bicycle Company for hiring such a great employee!
Mitch was super helpful...awesome experience even though I didnt buy a bike, the shop experience was way cool. Recommended highly.
I recently purchased a bike from Carytown Bicycle Company and I had a fantastic experience. The staff was very welcoming, kind and knowledgeable. They answered all of my questions, showed me bikes that best suited my needs, and not once did they try to push me out of my price range. If you are in the market for a new bike, then do yourself a favor and stop by this shop!
Awesome experience with Joseph and the owner (I believe John). I arrived early today and he let me in to drop off the bike early and was able to take care of the issue with the tire same day! I had originally purchased the bike from a neighboring competitor, but decided with getting the bike from Cary town bikes instead. Experience was a a lot better and personal. If you are getting a bike or service done I would definitely recommend this shop!
I was on my bike and my rear tire developed a hole. Went to another bike shop and was told I had to leave it. The guy at the front desk was completing a sale to another customer and he stopped and told me to head back to the service department. Bentley walked out from behind the counter, looked at the tire, said the tube looked fine, showed me a replacement and said it would take about 15 minutes. 10 minutes later he waved me back and said hed adjusted the gears since they needed it and I was out the door. Cant say enough about Carytown Bicycle Companys customer service. Highly recommended and many thanks to Bentley.
This place is AMAZING. The customer service here was on point, the staff were very knowledgeable and willing to answer any questions I had. I brought my DiamondBack Recoil in for a tune up and have get my new forks installed. Turn around was fast and the prices was excellent. I will definitely return and have these guys service my bike. 👌
Still requiring masks after all mandates were lifted. Out of touch with science and local ordinances. I’ll take my money somewhere I can express the freedom I fought for.
Great experience buying a new bike today. Mitch was knowledgeable, patient and I never felt rushed or pushed.
Danny is the nicest homie ever, shoutout to him for hooking it up and helping a brotha out
I bought my bikes elsewhere in Richmond, on Cary Street, but not from these guys. As I was packing up for a 5 week trip, I realized that my 2 E-bikes would not fit inside my RV safely and I really needed a bike rack. I called the dealer that sold me my bikes, but unfortunately, they are not a full service bike shop and do not sell any racks, specific to their bike brand or otherwise. At around 4 pm on Saturday I called CBC and spoke to someone and explained my issue of leaving the following morning and my immediate need. They had stock in the Kuat (NV 2.0 with 2 hitch) brand series and could have one ready for me in 30 minutes. I drove the 20 minutes to their store and paid the sales guy who had assembled it. He then took it to the parking lot where he proceeded to install it and explain all the features and locking mechanisms that were built in. I drove home and drove home and proceeded on my trip for the next 5 weeks. Loading and unloading was a breeze even for a 71 year old guy. My wife and I were able to ride is several States about 5 times during the trip. We returned and put the RV in storage until next trip.Update: A few days ago, we realized that we needed to haul the bikes locally on our Buick Lacrosse, but we could only get a Class II hitch for it. I called Grant at Carytown Bikes and got the only one left in stock which is exactly like the one on our RV, only it is a Class II compatible 1.25 hitch. Problem solved. Ill pick it up next week after I get the Class II hitch installed on my Buick. If you are wondering why I did not just get a reducer to use with my current hitch, here is why. The Tung Weight capacity of the Class II hitch is 350 lbs, using a reducer would have cut that to 175 lbs. E-Bikes and rack together weigh very near that. Too close for comfort so I opted for a second bike rack.
Will was really helpful and thoroughly answered all my questions. Everyone was friendly and adhered to keeping a safe distance.
Major shout out to Miles! Was on the Capital Trail this AM with 2 friends and one of them got a flat. Miles just happened to come upon us and ask if we had a flat. Said he worked at Carytown Bikes and was happy to help! Thank goodness because we were not prepared. He took care of everything including all the materials. Super nice guy and took the time to teach us how to properly change a tire. Very impressed with his kindness and professionalism. Thanks Miles!!
I cant say Ive been to every bike shop in the Mid-Atlantic, but Ive been to a few; and when it comes to quality service and industry knowledge(especially when it comes to mtb)this place is rarely met, let alone surpassed. I make a two hour drive to come here for service. The staff is a bunch of people who appreciate value, fun, and community over profit and nonsense. Really love this place and couldnt recommend it enough.
Purchased a Specialized Fuse for my son a year ago and am still thrilled with the purchase. Great customer service for repairs on all bikes we take to CB. I get good advice, thoughtful insight to help with purchasing and repair decisions, and great tips to help us with our own riding. Also, I love the way the team at CB encourages my son with his mountain biking.
COVID-19 bust. Open. But, guests arent allowed in-store. How does that work? Well, front door is taped off; someone greets you outside to ask basically, why are you here? Their plan is to assist you from the sidewalk, no browsing allowed. Yes, I had on a mask. Yes, I am agreeable to having my temp checked and COVID-19 questions. Those things mattered not here. I understand. But, I am not spending my money that way. My Trek bike purchase will just go to another establishment more settling to the spirit of doing business under these very trying times.
I went in to buy a new bicycle in April and was helped by Grant and William. They carried the bicycle I wanted, but didnt have the size i needed. I purchased the bicycle, and they had it overnighted, and assembled and ready for the next day. Over the course of the next month, they gladly addressed any concerns and upkeep I needed without question. Fantastic customer service, Carytown Bicycles stands behind what they sell, have excellent customer service and is by far the best in town. I wont shop anywhere else when it comes to bicycles!! Highly Recommended
Great bike shop: nice product selection and helpful staff
Awesome experience!!!! I was lucky enough to catch a service special for a full MTB overhaul for about $200 bucks. The normal service fee is $300 but I caught an off-season deal. Brought my bike in and right away Sean started explaining his plans and what he would like to do to get my ride back into fighting shape. These dudes have a super quick turn around time, they basically rebuilt my entire ride and had it back to me in 3 or 4 days over New Years weekend. I really cant recommend Cary Town Bikes enough for all your bike needs, no elitist vibes either, just cool people and awesome service.
Very friendly and informative staff!
I went during COVID and they were great. They came out in a fast timely manner to help people 1 on 1. I had just taken another bike of mine to a different shop 2 days prior and they were rude and in no rush to help anyone.I was helped by Miles. He was the best and I would recommend talking to him. What two other shops told me would take 2-3 weeks and be a lot more, Miles said they could have it done that day for a lot less. They did take longer than that day, but its seems they felt bad because they called me 2 hours before they opened the next day to say sorry and its ready.I rode my aforementioned bike there and Miles helped me again with some light tuning on the bike I has just gotten back from the other shop. He corrected one of their mistakes and showed me how to change something else.Overall I was there 3 times in 2 days and every time it was a pleasure.Cannot recommend enough.
Today I wanted to purchase a bicycle for Christmas for my nephew. Was stopped at the door in the rudest way possible and told no browsing with my nephew and my son. I am sure a covid precaution but there is a right way and a wrong way to handle that. The worst part was my son had just said what a cool store. I was excited to give them a great bike shop experience. Didn’t happen. I had purchased a road bike from carytown bikes and had a mountain bike serviced there before. But never again will I set foot in that store. I purchased a great trek 24” for my nephew from the friendliest people next door at Agee’s.
Had a good experience quick in and out got everything I needed staff was helpful and they are following the guidelines for covid 19 which all satisfied my needs!
I’ve been a customer since they opened their first small shop on Cary Street. I’ve bought bikes there, had them serviced there and have never had anything but excellent service. I dropped off a bike today (May 12) for new rotors. I had an appointment for the next day (May 13) to have them installed. I didn’t even get back home before I got a call telling me they completed the install. I know it’s not the most complicated install but taking the initiative to get it done and back to the customer that quick, now that’s excellent service that keeps me coming back and recommending CBC without hesitation. And, that’s not the first time that has happened.
CBC was a pleasure to work with when we were shopping for bicycles. Not only did they help us match the right bike, they also keep them serviced and good as new! A+
I stopped here while on tour to fix a tubeless setup and grab some supplies. Carytown bikes had everything I needed and could not have been more helpful! Thanks again!!
We just purchased a bike from them for our son. They were quite helpful and easy to work with. We live over an hour away from them and had to do a bit over the phone. We were set on getting a Cannondale and they had the one in his size. Will and the others were awesome. Thanks Carytown Bicycle.
They guys are amazing. Simply put. Outstanding service. Honest. Reliable. They strive to go above and beyond. They know what they’re doing. They make you feel comfortable, even if you’re not so knowledgeable. Repairs are inexpensive. It sucks there’s an Agee’s Bicycle right next door. I was actually on my way there, didn’t know about this place. My bike passed CBC first and I asked a customer outside where they would recommend I go? They said CBC for sure. CBC told me 24hrs to fix a flat, but it was ready a couple hours later. I still went to see if Agee’s has a better wait time but they had a sign on the door saying they weren’t servicing bikes not purchased from their store (COVID-19). I knew they were overrated anyways. Glad I came here!
Carytown Bikes was great - I had a receipt for a gift card from an out of town relative. The card was not located but the staff took care of the situation immediately and professionally. Would definitely shop with them again. Excellent customer service.
Came in looking to buy a bike and couldn’t be happier with my purchase! Grant was very knowledgeable and provided great customer service. Can’t wait to come back!
Knowledgeable, friendly and will get your bike fixed up right
I’ve been going to CB since last year (May 2019). I just got into cycling and they helped me decide on a Specialized Allez Sprint. Since then, I have been in constant communication with Andy and Tim. They are great, their shop is great, and have treated me like family. Glad they helped onboard me to this great community and highly recommend them!
Wonderful people! Id taken my bike to another shop to have the seat post cut down, they said they could not get the post out and to pick it up. Took it to Carytown Bicycle Co. and Matt had it out immediately. They worked to get it just the right height for me and the charge was extremely reasonable. Everyone there was kind and thoughtful. Great experience.
Friendly knowledgeable and practices social distancing. I highly recommend them
Decided to ride my bike over to Carytown Bicycle Co. this afternoon because it was so beautiful out and get my creaky bottom bracket fixed. As soon as I entered a staff member asked how they could help. I mentioned my bottom bracket problem, so they directed me to the back where the mechanics were.As I got to the back, one of the mechanics stopped what he was doing and walked around to take a look at my bike. Telling him what I noticed he asked whether or not itd be okay to leave it overnight. Since home was 4 miles away I told him I was hoping to have it taken care of today. After he looked at the pile of work ahead of him he said Yeah, give me 20-25 minutes. After pulling the bearings it turned out there was a crack running half way around the inner race! The mechanic handed me the second bearing which was still good. Parts and labor were cheap considering the tools and finesse needed.Back on the road, enjoying the beautiful ride home...without the creaking! Thanks guys for the awesome service!
I needed a bike to get around the city, since I dont have a vehicle. I went into Carytown Bicycle looking to spend about $1500 on a racing bike, because I wanted to look cool. After talking with the staff and trying out different bikes, I settled on a bike that was a much better fit for me. Very happy with my purchase--staff were friendly and accommodating throughout. The store itself was clean and pleasant. Would recommend.
My name is Paul and I recently decided to purchase a bike. This will be my first bike in a long time. It has probably been over 30 years since I have been on a bike. After doing a lot of research on-line I decide on one bike in particular. After all the research I had done, I was well acquainted with the bike short edge that is going on because of the Virus. I found a on-line bike store that said they had the bike I wanted and the size I needed. The bike was the Marin Presidio 4 dlx. Certainly this bike is not even close to the most expensive bike sold but it is not a Walmart variety either. Any ways, after ordering this bike 3 weeks ago and the on-line company keeping me in the loop about the status of the build of my bike, or so I thought, last Friday I was told my bike would be built and road tested and ready to ship in 7 days. After almost 4 weeks now, Sunday I received and email from the on-line company saying they had over estimated the number of this bike they had in stock and they do not have a bike for me and they have cancelled my order and started the refund process of my money. I tell this story to let all know, I was looking to buy a bike today. I decided I would not take a chance on any more on-line bike stores I would deal locally. To day I was off from work and decided to visit a few local bike store here in Richmond,Va. area. I must say the first 2 stores I visited, me being new to Cycling, gave me a wealth of knowledge and better understanding of what style of bike would work best for me. Both associates very helpful and very knowledgably about bikes.. Agees BicyclesAddress: 3116 W Cary St, Richmond, VA 23221 and REI CO-OP 2020 Old Brick Rd Glen Allen, VA 23060. I had planned to visit a few more shops today but after the experience at CARTOWN BICYCLE COMPANY, I decided to go home. I was greeted on the street outside of the store and told because of the Virus they are limiting the number of people in the store at one time. This I understood. Then another associate came out and began to ask me about what I was looking for. With my limited knowledge I tried to explain. After my explanation of what I thought I might be looking for, I was told that they had none of these available right now. I told him I understand, no one has very many bikes right now. I then asked if I could enter the store and just look around at what you do have. I was told no and given no explanation for why I would not be allowed in the store. Im a Professional 53 year old African American Male. Its messed up when I have to decide in cases like these, do I make seen or just let it go. This time I decide this store not getting a penny of my money ever would be enough and I left. I did notice a Lady who witnessed the whole seen (not of color) and even she had a look on her face of being confused as to why I was not being allowed to enter the store to look around. This event messed up the rest of my day. I got home thinking I should have at least inquired why I could not enter the store to look around. Carytown Bicyle Company will never ever get a penny of my money ever. I would like to encourage others to take the same approuch. Agees is almost right next door and the staff there are much more knowledgeable and welcoming to people of Color. In 53 years this is probably my second time ever writing an on-line review. The first time was a review commending a travel agent with a Travel Agency that went far and above what was expected even though the issue was all my fault.
I was so excited to get my first bike. All my friends have been riding for a while and they talked me in to getting involved. I love to support in town stores so I took a reccomendation from a friend and called Carrytown Bicycle to order my bike. The gent I talked to on the phone was awesome and I purchased a Salsa Journeyman to be delivered to the shop one week out. I took the day off to go up and get the bike as it was about an hour away and I just wanted to enjoy myself and enjoy the new bike! When I got there it was a bit of a mess. Understandably there were some rules about the quarentine, but I was not told what I needed to do. I was trying to talk and meet some of the guys but it felt like there was somthing really wrong going on, and it was my fault. I felt like there were rules I was breaking, but I didnt even know what the rules were. Eventually I was hurried out of the store. The entire situation felt terrible. I understand if there are rules, I am glad to follow them for the social distancing, as a matter of fact, if the store was closed due to the quarentine I would have just waited until it opened. None of that is the issue. I cant belive how I was treated was the first big issue. I have sent 2 emails, and called twice to speak to someone just so I could share how I felt. I have been told over email and the phone that I would recieve a phone call from managment. Nothing in three weeks. Sorry guys, I dont think this is going to be my bike shop, and I am really sorry for the bad review, everything was just really bad, with no follow up. I hope it was just a bad day for you all and this isnt how everyone is treated. All the best.
Very happy with Carytown Bikes Service Dept! Got recommendation from Sean on converting my Mtn Bike to 1x. He called me back within an hour with pricing that didnt change when the job was completed. Latina made the expert installation as soon as the parts arrived. Ive been riding the 1x now for a month and can say that I am very satisfied with what I got from Sean & Latina! Its great to have a place that does great work and you can trust.
Carytown Bicycle is by far my favorite bike store in town. My favorite thing about them is that they are extremely knowledgeable but they are not intimidating. They always try to help without flexing their egos. I know there are some of the best riders in the state that ride with them and work there but they dont try to prove it all the time. I have bought two mountain bikes, a road bike, and a childrens mountain bike there and they were very helpful without being pushy. Their service with the bike has been wonderful and effective too. Some of my friends are even more of a gear head than I am and they love Carytown too. The new shop is awesome. I wouldnt go anywhere else.
These guys are the best! Simone and Tim helped my husband and I find new road bikes. We had been several other places around town, but the no pressure sales and genuine interest in our purchase sold it for us. Simone put in a lot of time with us making sure we were comfortable with our purchase. Everyone is incredibly friendly and excited to help.
Went in to look at helmets for my little and even though there were plenty of employees NOT a single person walked up acknowledged that we came into the store or asked if we needed any help. There were other people in the store but there was plenty of staff for the amount people. This is not our first bad experience at this store and we will not go back. I am a huge supporter of buying local so we will be going to another store.
Carytown Bikes is one of the best shops I have ever dealt with. I drove over 100 miles to do business with them. The customer service and follow through is excellent. They have an excellent selection, knowledgeable staff and very professional to deal with. I feel like I am top priority every time I call or visit. I forsee a long working relationship with the crew there and will continue for many years down the road as I continue to upgrade and maintain.
I love this shop. Their new location is beautiful and spacious, they have a great inventory, and their shop is well-staffed and on point. Dont be intimidated by the selection of products, the folks here will help you pick whats right for you. This shop has come a long way over the years, and while I had some mediocre experiences in the past, they owners and employees have impressively worked out the kinks.Plus they have coffee!
This review is for the Short Pump location. First off, Erin was helpful and nice when I brought my bike into the shop. I bought a Yeti mountain bike online 11/19 and cracked the carbon frame 1/20. To process warranty claims you have to go to an authorized dealer which is how I ended up at Carytown bikes. The cracked swing arm was covered under warranty but bc I didn’t buy the bike from them I had to pay to have it installed- that I can understand. They call me and say it’s ready for pickup- $70 labor. Get there and pay for it and the bill is $130. I ask why- oh, that doesn’t include brake bleed or parts. Doesn’t seem straightforward but I paid for it. I get the bike home to find deep scratches in my new swing arm that have touch up paint over them. I contact the manager who tells me that’s normal and that’s why they keep an army of touch up paint. But since he didn’t tell me about it he’d give me $70 back for the install. I went back and forth with this person explaining I paid $130 for install and it would cost at least that to repair professionally. Finally I had to move on with my life. It was the worst customer experience I’ve ever had. As soon as they knew i didn’t purchase the bike from them they could care less about me or my bike. They never even offered to fix the damage they created. Hopefully I don’t have another warranty issue bc I’ll be driving to Charlottesville for service.
Over the holidays I ordered online to pick up in their store. I actually received a call to confirm which store was the pickup location and when I couldnt get to the downtown store, they shipped directly to my home. Absolutely great customer service. I will definitely be a loyal customer.
Carytown Bike only cares about making a sale and nothing else. I am really sad that a local Richmond business is so concerned about money only and not taking care of their customers. Please save yourself a headache and show at ANY OTHER bike shop.
Great service.
The staff was helpful and I have been enjoying my new bike! =]
Amazing inventory; super high-end racing and mountain bikes, lots of everything else. Service can be a little disengaged; Ive waited long minutes at the counter while three techs studiously ignored me. There are better, cheaper, friendlier options if youre just a t-shirt and tennis shoes cyclist, but if youre serious, this is the place to be.
Great shop! Amazing selection! Awesome staff! Weve been working with CBC on a business to business level since the fall of 2017 and we are more than impressed with their attention to detail, knowledge of the product and the ability to put the customer needs in front of the sale. Were super stoked to work with CBC and Stephen P! Swing by and tell em RRB sentcha!
They gave me free stickers! Lots of cool bikes- above my price range. Repair shop in back.
My experience here for the first time was made great by a very helpful and friendly employee by the name of William. He did a great job of educating me on road bikes and I would recommend that anyone give this a place a shot. Ask for William and you wont go wrong!
Ive dealt with Andy at Carytown twice now via phone/email pertaining to tshirt orders placed online and to say the customer service is outstanding would be an understatement. Carytown is polite, timely, and goes beyond whats necessary to help out. Theyve got my continued business..highly recommend!
I recently had my Specialized road bike retrofitted to be a triathlon bike at Carytown. Im not the most experienced rider, but the staff there took the time to walk me through my options and didnt try to upsell me at all. The bike rides great now and the price was reasonable. A very rewarding retail experience - a rare commodity in todays day and age.
I bought a rear & front headlight from them recently & one was defective. They immediately replaced & asked if anything else could help me with. Very courteous! Also convenient they have an air pump available to the public.
I dont have enough good things to say about these guys!My wife and I spent all afternoon talking to them about all of our road bike options, both ones that they had and ones they didnt. They were very quick to offer what I thought was very honest feedback and genuinely seemed interested in putting us on the right bikes rather than the most expensive ones. Simon was VERY helpful, by far the best we have talked to around the area (weve been to several other bike shops in town), and the entire staff was not only supremely knowledgeable but also truly seemed to enjoy what they are doing. I appreciated the information and also the transparency of their entire staff.I would definitely recommend to anyone, and would absolutely purchase from them again!
Firstly, I am not trying to lambast the company or extract a manner of petty revenge. This is rather an attempt to provide a valid review of the sum of my visits to this location.TL;DR: Carytown Bike Company is sometimes good, sometimes not. Felt unwelcome when trying to install equipment I bought from them. Altogether unhelpful when I tried to warranty a purchase. Read for full details. My first two visits were great. The gentleman on the floor was very helpful and pointed me towards a few bike locks and various equipment for mine and my wifes commuter bikes. He helped me pick out some solid equipment for our needs and was the reason I decided I would make this my bike shop here in RVA.My subsequent visits have not been so positive. Two weeks ago I bought a rear rack and some lights for my wifes bike. We rode our bikes there intending to have the rack installed before we left, but they were not inclined to install it. Since we had no way of getting the purchase home without installing the rack, I installed it myself in the store. I did not have an 8mm wrench and asked to borrow one from the service dept., they informed me that they didnt usually lend tools out and eventually, begrudgingly let me borrow an 8mm. Awesome. Theyre installed and now we can go home. That was less than two weeks ago (September 24th, 3:45pm). Two days ago, the rear light I bought broke into three pieces. Keep in mind this is a street bike and the hardest abuse it sees is potholes. I went back to the store to see if they would warranty the purchase. Granted, I do not have the original receipt. However, the lady at the counter specifically remembered the purchase, I had the purchase date and the amount. I was informed that they had no way of pulling up the purchase or processing a return or warranty on any other way. I was brusquely told that there was nothing else to be done about it and u less I can find the Original Receipt, Im SOL and would have better luck trying to contact the manufacturer. I have never had such a hassle trying to return a piece of defective equipment and will likely never return to Carytown Bicycle Company myself.I understand that they are generally held in high esteem and very well rated. My experience may be an outlier or perhaps I am actually an unreasonable jerk with unrealistic expectations in this scenario, but I invite you to make your own decisions.
To be fair I believe this shop is capable of most routine bike repairs. However, the always underestimated repair times, lack of customer appreciation and unapologetic staff has become too much for me to continue to support.
CBC rocks:) great service, fun staff, knowledgeable mechanics and I even joined a GROUP ride that was SWEET! These guys are top notch. I replaced my racing bike after a rough shipment home from IM and they made it all very easy...(and it was heartbreaking).
See the other reviews of people completely ignored by shop staff. Those reviews are accurate. Went in this morning - three staff members clustered around the register, while I wandered about the shop. After 10 minutes of wandering, with no sales people approaching, or seemingly even interested in my business, I left. Not my first experience with this store doing exactly the same thing, so this will be my last. Shame too, looks like I will be buying the bike and trainer online, as theyre the only Kickr dealer in town. If you want your business to be a private club, youve succeeded. I wasnt the only ones who left, and went to the shop next door - a couple looking for a bike helmet, gave up after their experience, similar to mine, and bought it from the competition. Oh, and if youre not OK with dogs romping around the shop - you should probably go elsewhere.
Ill start with the lowdown, in case you dont have time to read the whole review: my experience with Carytown Bicycle Co. was worth every penny and more. Everyone there was knowledgable, helpful, and enthusiastic throughout every stage of the repair process, and the results were phenomenal.I came to Carytown Bikes to see if it was worth it to repair a nearly 30 year old Trek 500 touring bike to bring with me to college. Though it had been stored inside, this bike had been through most of the wringer: bent rims, worn and dry rotted tires, corroded brakes and chains, and all of the other lovely things that come from 15 or so years sitting alone in a basement.Coming into the shop, I had no real expectation whether or not it could be resurrected, but I was immediately greeted at the front desk by an employee who knew right off the bat what I was looking for. He referred me to the back, where I met Simon, the mechanic who would help me the rest of the way through the repair. He had infectious enthusiasm about the possibility of repairing what seemed to the untrained eye to just be a worn down old bike, and was able to assess and explain exactly what we needed. I left after that brief meeting knowing that my bike was in excellent hands and would be repaired to a T.One of the things many people complain about from Carytown Bikes is a slightly higher price point than other shops. While it may seem expensive (a nearly full rebuild for my bike cost only a bit less than buying a new one), the service is absolutely worth it. My bike rides beautifully, and every aspect of my experience at the shop was positive. I will definitely be back if I need repairs or tune-ups.
Staff is always helpful, nice, and knowledgeable. Carytown location at least is the best shop in RVA. I just wish I could afford more of their bikes
Great store, decent selection, and a friendly staff.
Bought a bike here a few months ago and it was too small and not my size but the manager who sold it to me said it was my size (it was a 16 frame and I needed at least a 19 frame). When I tried to return the bike the next day, a sales associate said I should be able to return it since I hadnt even used it. Then the manager (Who sold me the bike!) said that they have a strict no return policy and that I could not get my money back. I think its pretty ridiculous that I couldnt return a bike that 1) I was not sized for and 2) I didnt even use. It was obvious that I hadnt used the bike and the sales associate even told me that he could tell I hadnt written it. Not to mention the manager was pretty rude to me. If youre gonna buy a bike from here, you better be sure its the one you want because you wont be able to return it.
Amazing customer service ! Very helpful and friendly .
Asked if buying a bike with them included a fitting, the associate said it did, apparently it does not after emailing another associate. Wouldve gone somewhere else and saved a couple hundred dollars if I knew there was no extra benefits to buying with them.
Ive been using these guys ever since I moved into Richmond over a decade ago. Their service is top-notch and the selection of products and accessories they have is really good for someone who takes biking seriously.I recently had a custom build done by these guys and the frame, wheel and component upgrades they suggested were spot on. Props to Kyler and Sean for walking me through the process, keeping costs reasonable and the value quotient high!
This bike shop has an awesome vibe. They are super helpful when it comes to selecting the right bike and their mechanics are great too. To top it all off, they even serve food!
I was on tour from Oregon and my shifting was absolutely bonkers but was only going to be in town for a day. I went next door first and they told me they couldnt do anything for me for a almost a week. I popped into Carytown, told them my story, and they threw my bike into the stand on the spot. Replaced my worn out cassette and chain in less than a half an hour and now it shifts better than it ever did before. Its folks like these that make travel by bicycle possible. Thanks so much!
Great guys, great shop!
Although my visit was short...they were closing...I found exactly what I was looking for (Secialized road shorts). The store is well stocked with top of the line within brands. Super friendly staff! I am a fan!
Stellar shop! The owner is very kind and in the business for the right reasons, the staff is knowledgable and skilled, you really cant go wrong at carytown bicycle company. Good people around there.
Very helpful shop staff, decent prices, and good turnaround time on basic maintenance.
Very helpful. Good service and fair. They are more about customer service than about the sale.
Dam good nice people they made me feel like they know me
Will, and William were super helpful with a purchase of a quick 7. Thank you for great customer service.
This is the best bike shop in Carytown. Theyre not my overall favorite in Richmond, but theyre still a 5 stars experience. Friendly staff, free bike pumps to use, large store. And you can grab some food - theres goatocado inside!
5 Stars! Nicest bike shop in town. Beautiful layouts, a clean store, great product selection and friendly employees.
Real solid people. Would suggest. Will return.
I asked for a non-binding, ballpark labor charge for a certain service. I would not want to haul a bike in their store and take up their time if I could not afford the service at the time. It depends! was the answer. Parts can cost hundreds of dollars!. I never asked about the cost of parts. It depends!. O.K., the guy got to say it depends! three or four times. An owner or manager quietly/nicely told me to just bring it in. But then he walked away leaving me with it depends! guy.Performance Bicycles (West Broad St.) is above and beyond service AND friendliness. I think they have a sign giving a guideline of labor costs but I did not have time to read it as the mechanic and a clerk were happy to help me. I have no doubt that if they did not know something they would find the answer in a reasonable amount of time. No auto mechanic, golf club builder, etc. would ever just say it depends! without giving a customer some clue about the price range. And yes, I used to mountain bike and I am aware that parts can costs hundreds of dollars and up (I can also use the internet). Send in Key and Peele substitute teacher to straighten out Carytown Bicycle Company, please.
Mucho thanks for your expert help! Customer service is top notch!
I have to say, ive taken my bikes to several other shops in Richmond and havent had the best experiences. Ive had my new bike dinged at one shop and have had several interactions with dismissive and unknowledgable staff/mechanics. I decided to try Carytown and so glad i did. I routinely take both my bikes there and every single mechanic ive spoken to has taken the time to address my concerns and talk with me extensively about whatever issue i have. The staff seem passionate about bikes and are genuinely helpful. And on most occasions, they fix me up right there on the spot. Which is great for someone who hates being without their bike.
I recently had the experience of purchasing a bike lock from your Carytown location on Sunday. Initially I had some concerns that the lock may be a bit too small so I asked what options I had if the lock did not fit my needs. The sales person at the front desk was very helpful and informed me that as long as I had the receipt and the product in its entirety I could return or exchange the item to the store. Fast forward to Tuesday morning, I had used the lock on my bike and, unfortunately, confirmed that the lock was just a wee bit too small. My wife offered to take the lock back to the store on my behalf to return it. Here is where things take a turn, once my wife gets to the store and engages with the sales person at the front desk and explains the situation she is bombarded with questions on how it was used and suggestions on how we could make due with the product. I can not, for the life of me, understand why it fell on the sales person to try and man-splain to my wife how to use a bike lock. This should have been a simple exchange but instead it resulted in the over explanation of bike security 101 and why my wife (whom, and this is VERY Important, is not the end user of this product) could not just perform a simple exchange sans the disrespectful tone and approach. The sad thing is that in the very few number of time that we have been to this store since moving to RVA this has been, by far, the worst. So bad, in fact that I will be absolutely taking my business elsewhere.
Have had two bikes serviced at the Westchester location. Excellent service, very knowledgeable, very helpful. Spent time to explain in detail.
Overpriced repairs that only end up removing longevity from my bike. This is the 3rd time Ive had it fixed and ended up broke and without a bike.
The best bike shop in RVA. Just visited the new store at Short Pump. Awesome. Tim Mullins and his team rocks.
I stopped into CBC on a whim while cruising Carytown yesterday and ended up having a really nice experience. I ended up buying some Richmond 2015 gear and had a nice conversation with Tim. Based on the customer service alone, I absolutely plan to go back.
Jesse Leadbetter with Carytown Bicycle Company went above and beyond when others scoffed at finding me some small parts. Moved from Richmond to Charlottesville a couple years ago however Jesse still worked to help me because he wanted to as part of his high level of commitment to customer service be it small parts or the most expensive bike in-house. Im thankful for the efforts to help when others didnt want to be bothered with a trivial ask. Stop in and see them when you are in town or give them a call to place your next order.
Awesome shop, awesome staff, highly recommend them for all your bike needs!
Its a nice, quaint lil shop. Expensive tastes only. Lol
After realizing they couldnt repair my rear wheel, they gave me a replacement, of higher quality, for a discount. Staff is cool, honest and eager to help with anything.
Great bike shop and High end bikes such as YETI
A great shop. Knowledgeable and friendly.
Great help from friendly staff. Excellent experience.
Really nice people, nice atmosphere but a little pricey
