Another hidden gem icon of RVA. A little difficult to rate as they are only doing window service right now. Peaked into the building and it has your typical seating area, and nice venue inside, someday it will probably reopen to inside service!!Coffee was excellent per my wife, and she is a connoisseur! Plain black or flavored, seasonal coffee creations, they do it all.Super friendly staffStreet parking only
A friend showed us this place. It is very homey with only a few people working. Worth the wait. The menu is small, which makes it easy to choose between options. They have a frequent sipper card for regular customers and a nice area to sit outside. Another cool thing is there is a book exchange in front of the coffee shop 🙂
They need to train their baristas in how to make espresso drinks. I go there semi frequently and never have had a drink made correctly. More care needs to be taken. The owner clearly doesnt think I can have a valid criticism here. It goes without saying that he hasnt made the drinks Ive ordered. Ill provide careful documentation next time.
There are about a thousand great coffee shops in Richmond, and I think Black Hand is the best. The coffee is always fantastic (the dirty chai is the star of the show), the breakfast sandwiches are delicious, the staff is friendly and attentive, and the outdoor seating is adorable. I love it at Black Hand!
Coffee is great and service and staff are friendly. Im glad to see this place is still open after the year we have all had. If you live locally please pop by and support this unique little coffee shop.
Been going to this neighborhood coffee shop for years, best dirty chai latte in the city
I got the 16oz Flavor Latte (with Gingerbread) and soy milk. My drink was made super fast! The place is small, seating is a bit limited for groups larger than two people. Just about everyone in here is doing work on laptops so it’s fairly quiet. The barista was a little straight forward and didn’t care much to sprinkle in some extra friendliness but it didn’t ruin my experience at all.I wish they used in-house mugs or “for here” mugs. It would reduce some waste!EDIT: they do have in house mugs, but they are only for smaller lattes and drinks :). 👍🏼Overall the coffee was very good and I am very happy! I would recommend this place for people looking to study or wind down and relax with a coffee.Off topic: lots of windows for natural light, yet the room was still very dark for whatever reason. Some people might want a brighter atmosphere to work in so I thought I might mention the setting.
AWESOME PEOPLE AND LOCAL. The Owner refunded my order immediately when he saw they were out of what I ordered. Upon picking it up (didn’t see he had tried to contact me), he tried to give me free pastries and coffee, and expressed his compassion and sympathy towards the misunderstanding. I paid a 3$ tip because it’s the right thing to do. It was no ones fault! and he went out of his way to take care of the customer. That’s who we want serving our community.
Its important to separate the roasters of a good coffee, from the owner of the shop. You can buy the coffee from the roasters website.
Fantastic Costa Rican and Columbian roasts, as well as a myriad of other varieties and blends to choose from.
Employees are unscrupulous, but the managers fixed it fast.
Breakfast bagels were good. Coffee was a bit week.
Best Dirty Chai in RVA 💯
Great lattes, amazing single origin whole bean, fresh and timely deliveries. Consistent flavor profiles and roast color.
These guys are the bomb! I was just looking at their menu (i didnt know theyd just closed) and the guy opened the windows and asked me if I wanted anything. These guys are super dedicated and have a great customer realation. Goodbye starbucks, hello Black Hand. Yall got yourselves a regular now.
Love coming here before work! Staff is so friendly and welcoming and more than happy to help. Also excited to try their new fall flavors!
Owner is rude and I’ve seen him scream at staff on numerous occasions. Food and coffee is good when they have everything in stock. I stopped going here because of the owner’s attitude.
I had my first mocha latte and asiago bagel with bacon, egg, and cheese from Black Hand Coffee. Both were fantastic! Thank you.
Black Hand Coffee Co was the first local coffee shop I visited after moving to Virginia. I love the cozy atmosphere. What really impresses me is the knowledge of the staff, which was well expressed through the execution of my latte. This place will not disappoint!
Just had the bagels and even though the selection was only savory flavors ( I wanted cinn raisin ) it was awesome for breakfast
Im going to admit it. Im painfully picky about my chai. This place nailed it. Not too sweet, not too spicy. Its perfect.
Black Hand Coffee is the best in rva!! I love going here before work to start my day! They’re always so welcoming.
I placed a mobile order in the hopes that I would not have to stand outside for 20 minutes. That didn’t happen and I ended up wasting a lot of time that I didn’t have to waste. Customers who placed orders after me were served much quicker. I waited as 3 new orders were placed and served. Mine was still nowhere in sight. Exactly 20 minutes after my order was placed, I finally received it.This is not good customer service and makes mobile ordering useless.
One of the best cups of coffees I’ve had
Really friendly and courteous! Great cappuccino!
This is my favorite place in RVA!!! Best coffee, best people, best atmosphere! It’s adorable. I highly recommend!
It had an excellent wait staff, very pretty, and the food I had was very good.
Great local establishment. Amazing service and coffee. The owners are super friendly. Bagels are super delicious. Whether it’s a quick pit stop or a day of leisure Black Hand Coffee is a must.
It was ok. The food was good and the coffee was fresh, but the service was slow. The host forgot my sandwich and I ended up Waiting for no reason
My husband and I used to visit multiple times every time we passed through or stayed in Richmond. We wont be visiting again after hearing the owners comments against protestors and his own clientele. Ill go work on my liberal playbook over at Lamplighter or like any other locally owned coffee shop.
Stopped by here a couple times here and there on trips to Richmond, thought the place had a decent atmosphere and served above mediocre coffee. Nothing to write home about, but its a coffee shop that serves its purpose. Staff seemed great. Each time they were super personable to me, even at early hours in the morning when both of us were likely hungover. However, for whatever reason the most recent time I stopped through the coffee left a very noticable leather after-taste in my mouth. It was completely undrinkable, an extremely pungent leather taste. It might be because the owner is a bootlicker, but I didnt think that would translate to the taste of the coffee. Boy, was I wrong.
Management could care less about the safety of women in this establishment. I vocalized my concerns and left feeling very uncomfortable.
Excellent coffee, good vibe, chai tea latte also on point
Coffee shop with the fastest service and best outdoor space in RVA (drip is weak)
Love their coffee and space! Iced coffee gives me life at this place
Small, eclectic, and one of the top places in Richmond! This is my favorite shop in town for the amazing flavors they get out of their regional collections. Not too many bells and whistles to cover up mediocre coffee, they let their roasting process shine. The one unfortunate thing is that their space is very small, so it’s not the ideal place for a long conversation or work session.
First time visiting blackhand coffee today! Both the service and coffee was above and beyond. I would definitely recommend this coffee shop. Claire walked me thru the menu and let me know abt the specials. Excited to make this my new staple coffee shop!
Im not a coffee drinker but I come here for a yummy chai latte and a breakfast sandwich. I often schedule my one-on-one morning meetings here. Limited seating but Ive never had an issue getting a table. Great little neighborhood gem
Black hand coffee company is a traditional city coffee company located on the corner street with limited parking but regardless of that the entire experience is parking a good distance and enjoying the walk with overhanging trees and saying hello to your neighbor. The sun comes up over the homes right as you approach the shop. You get a blast of sun and soon delicious coffee. Once inside you will be welcomed by warm atmosphere and smiling faces. If you’re lucky enough to own a dog you can walk him straight in and wait for your coffee. They will not protest. The coffee is the entire reason for going. It’s delicious. I used to go to Starbucks and other coffee shops around but I make sure I make the trip here when I need reliability and speed. They are very professional. Don’t even ask how they are feeling - the staff have no time for emotions. Their days will be pack with orders and maintaining the coffee wells. Don’t take offense, for you too would be unwelcoming to personal questions with that level of responsibility. Please go
Been living up Belmont for the past 2yrs and finally tried them....👍👍👍👍
Love this place! Try and go every day, their cold brew is the best in town - strong, punchy, flavorful, rich, bright, and easy to drink. Not to mention best caffeine bang for your buck Ive ever had. Their hot coffee ranges from beans all over the world and always satisfies. Staff is kind and fun, and FAST! Terrific place :)
Nice place. Need to take a trip to New York to get some NY bagels. And need non sour coffee options.
Such a cozy place with great coffee and service I enjoyed their outdoor seating. A wonderful neighborhood place for everyone.
The coffee is okay, but the place is so utterly low-budget its like sitting in a dudes garage. Milk, etc. to be added to ones drink must be taken in bulk from a filthy cooler that doesnt look like its meant to be opened by customers. If you dont mind a no-frills, empty-as-cardboard balsa-wood basement to drink your daily brew, Im sure its fine, but as for me, Im glad its not my neighborhood fill-up.
A charming little spot with some fine coffee and tasty English muffins.
Love their coffee so much I make a special stop when Im back in town.
I really love this location of this coffee shop! I love the hip vibe when I 1st walked in. Only reason why I didnt give it 5 stars is because the person serving the coffee the other day was just not friendly at alll... he seemed very Board and the coffee was cold ... ugh... and he said he had no way to heat it up more... what?? BUT we will be back because we usually enjoy the coffee, the space and the service... Plus, everybody is entitled to at least a couple bad days, right? I cant imagine this guy is always in a bad mood. Hmmm... maybe he needs more coffee?
Great coffee! Limited seating inside however but great place to go study or meet a friend.
Weak coffee served with attitude needs to be the motto for this cafe. My husband and I went in earlier this afternoon and both got the Dirty Chai to go. When we got there, the girl who was working (short hair, big hoop earrings) had her back to turned us while she was messing with the coffee machine and didnt even acknowledge us while we stood there for at least a couple minutes at the register. She then turned around, sighed, huffed and said in a rude tone of voice Can I get something for you? I know its Christmas Eve, but its not our fault that the place is open and she has to work. This is very unprofessional and disrespectful to paying customers. We wont be coming back, and we will be telling our friends and neighbors about the experience. Also, the drinks we got were incredibly weak.
Probably just better off going to Blanchards. This place seems really suspect with dairy being left out on the counter for who knows how long.
Great local coffee shop...great staff
Used to be my favorite. Staff is great. Owner is trash.
I agree with some of the reviews on here that say that the Black Hand has gone downhill. However, it has nothing to do with the employees or the quality of their products and drinks. The place has a hostile environment. The crowd that frequents the Black Hand has changed, and not for the better. It seems like they have begun to attract the most small-minded, reactionary people in the metro. This morning, someone left a napkin on my table with a homophobic message on it. (Im openly gay.) I live in the Museum District and have been going here for several years and never had this happen. I showed it to the barista and she was very apologetic. However, this incident does say something about the crowd the cafe attracts, which says something about the cafe itself. This isnt the first time Ive experienced homophobia around the Black Hand. About three weeks ago, a patron who was coming out the restaurant as was going in slurred at me for wearing a Pride t-shirt. I would caution my friends in the gay community that the current atmosphere here isn’t LGBT friendly. It’s sad because they have great drinks.
I love the quaint location of this coffee shop. The smell of roasting coffee beans added to the ambiance, as did the free street-side library in front. The menu offers a good variety of coffee-based drinks as well as breakfast-style pastries. I highly recommend the iced coffee. It was perfectly flavored with no bitterness at all.
I support this coffee shop and the owner, one of the few business owners in rva with a backbone and we need more of that in rva and the country in general. Will make an effort to come by more often.
Nice little shop, cold brew good, staff friendly enough - definitively not a place to get stable wifi tho, only qualm. Coffee good.
This is an OK coffee shop. The bagels and coffee are delicious but the person serving the food was rude. The seating area is very small, and there are virtually zero outlets. Also, the wifi was extremely slow. I probably will not come back to this location :/
My wife and I went here for a quiet afternoon cup. It was perfect. Felt like it was a part of the neighborhood with people slipping in and out for a coffee. Not many tables, but we felt like we could hold a private conversation. We loved it and will be back.
I appreciated the small menu + its presentation in a large sans serif font! I usually struggle with walking in a new restaurant/shop and ordering off of the menu from door to register bc the menu is usually difficult to read without getting closer, but BHC didnt have that problem. Additionally, the service is quick and friendly
The Chai lattes are much much better than Starbucks and we go almost every weekend for the bagel sandwiches. The Bacon, Egg and Cheese bagel is my favorite. The bagels are fresh and exactly how they should be. Excellent coffee as well. Theres not much room inside to sit but theres a few tables and some benches outside.
Very good coffee shop. Small and in the corner. Hipster vibe.
Black Hand rocks! Their staff is awesome and the drinks never fail to impress. My go-to is a Dirty Chai so definitely give it a shot. Also their food selection is very minimal, but affordable and quick.
Our go-to place! ~ A friendly escape for great coffee!
Amazing chai latte. They had 3 non-dairy options, including oatmilk which is nice and creamy. Seating is very limited...4 2-top tables, 4 window-facing barstools, and 2 barstools at the register. Plan accordingly! Worth it just to drop in for a quick drink. They dont have gluten free food options, so I cant speak to those.
Lively and packed. Smallish sit down area but very fun and packed in the Fan on a sweet corne .
When looking for a place to drink iced coffee, I want a place trendy enough to feel out of place, but not so trendy that I feel unwelcome. I want the barista to wear a t-shirt with a word like Pitchfork, or something so ambiguous it leaves me confused as to if it is a book, movie, or band all of which I am unaware. I want to walk in and see several different styles and textures of reclaimed wood.
Good coffee but nasty owner. Richmond doesn’t need anymore bootlickers.
Black Hand is my favorite coffee shop in Richmond, and that says a lot. Competition is stiff here. Their cold brew is my second favorite (Wandering Bear is first, sorry guys) anywhere. Its so smooth, I dont add a thing to it. It doesnt need it.They also make a mean bacon egg & cheese bagel.
This place must be crawling with cockroaches. After drinking about half of my cold brew, I found a bug in the drink. Disgusting.
Quaint coffee shop in Museum district that has delicious and fair priced coffee. Pair it with a sausage egg and cheese bagel and that is a perfect morning 👌🏻
Thanks for the reply and apology, Clay. I know it’s not your fault. I am stickler for good service, the lady was probably ina bad mood and didn’t realize how she came across to me.Have a good day. It is a cool little coffee shop with great coffee!
Cute hip spot with good corner people watching location and very close to the VMFA for a stroll. Wish they had almond milk in their fridge. Also a sign on the fridge inviting you to open it and use the milk would have been nice but standing around you see others do it. Meh. Food was tasty and bagel was fresh!
Really good drip coffee, maybe the best. A gem of a cafe: pretty inside, cozy size, an obvious labor of love. (The place is good; I just almost never give 5 stars)
Chill staff, great coffee and bagel/egg sandwiches.
Get there early and enjoy the outside seating where you can discuss your plans of world domination
This is a nice local coffee shop in the Fan. They roast their own beans which is a huge plus. They have free WiFi and there is a Little Free Library outside the front door! They were open during the huge snow storm which was convenient. My only complaints are that they do not roast a large enough variety of coffees for me, and the shop is a bit small, so it can be hard to get a seat. It also seems that there is usually only one employee working, so he or she can only handle customers at such a rate.
I found the service and the quality of the coffee to be outstanding.
The quality of their food and drinks are great but it’s a small place so expect a bit of a wait on weekday mornings and weekends.
Best coffee in Richmond, hands down. Super chill staff and unbeatable prices. You can tell they really care about their coffee and their customers. Its the only place I go when I want coffee.
It was OK. The service was good. The dirty chai was decent. The place is quite small. The atmosphere is nothing compared to Aromas at City Center in Newport News.
I bought a pound of the Sumatra at Union Market. The bag says dark roast with 5 or 6 black circles on the back of the bag. It is at best a medium roast. It is good coffee but I never drink light to medium roast and was tempted to take it back but didnt feel like hassling with it. From what i can tell the only dark roast that they have is the Espresso.
I consistently and regularly shop at Black Hand. I go there to pick up coffee beans, and its always on their recommendation. I just show up and say Gimme whats good, and grind it fine. Exemplary coffee every single time.Every. Single. Time.
Quality coffee at a reasonable price. The space is limited so it may be difficult to find a place to sit and work.
Black Hand is a cool little neighborhood coffee shop. The coffee is rich and the chai is creamy. They also have great bagels. There is usually a line, especially on the weekend. But the coffee is worth the wait.
Still love it but would love it more if they had half gallon jugs of cold brew again
I bought this brand coffee whole bean espresso at the market at 25 and it was the worst coffe I have ever had. I am not too picky about my coffee but I couldn’t drink this stuff. The beans were a dry light brown and my coffee had very little flavor and looked light brown. I paid $11.95 for this stuff and I can’t find anywhere that there is a money back policy. To add insult to injury I later found out that my boyfriend had the same experience last year when he purchased the same coffee at Union Market. He sent an email to the company and they never responded. DON’T BUY IT! IT IS A RIP-OFF!
