I just read a dozen exceptionally positive reviews about Mt. Hope Service Center & its Owner Jeff. With absolutely no hyperbole whatsoever, I agree with & have experienced EVERY SINGLE POSITIVE those dozen writers affirmed. I may not be very credible because I have only been taking my cars there for 25 years π π. In every service area there is (doctor, hairdresser, dentist, psychiatrist, etc ), the 2 qualities that I must have & that keep me coming back are Competence & Caring. Jeff excels in both &--oh yeah--hes honest too! Imagine that: an Honest Auto Mechanic. π€ π β€
Always a great, fast and efficient service! I will always bring my cars here, they always do a great job! Definitely a shop you can trust!
Im sure the owner is amicable to his long time customers, but to new ones? I think he doesnt really care and he appeared to be condescending. My car has had scratching noise due to deposits on the rotor. Its been getting worse lately and Id like a mechanics to take a look. Dealership suggested turning the rotor would solve the issue. The shop owner does not like the idea, he told me blatantly that he will not turn the rotor, and by extension, hes probably going to replace it with new parts.Anyway, I still dropped off my car to have the wheels looked at. The owner told me hes going to call me at 2 pm, which he never did. I came to the shop at 3:30 and he told me to leave since Im going to take it to the dealership anyway.
I always have a great experience with Jeff. I have known him for 4 years and exclusively work with him. He is fair and honest, I know him to be extremely good at his job. Never does what doesnt need to be done. Very hard to find a trustworthy mechanic these days, Jeff is a rarity.
This place is the real deal. Honest mechanic. Not only showed me the issue but helped me understand it.
No respect for new customers who dont know much about cars, and very rude to talk to on the phone.Overcharge for tiny repairs (Windshield Wipers) I will not come here again, the owner was very rude.
Idk what others have been through here, but my experience was absolutely a positive one. I got caught in a bind and these guys fixed my problem promptly, efficiently, and affordably. They pointed out potential issues with my vehicle but did not pressure me to use their services at that time.I dont want to go anywhere else. The owner, Jeff, was easy to speak with and very kind and open.
Dropped the car off and had to call 3 times over 2 days to get any information on what was going on. I told them what was wrong (since Iβve had the same issue before) and was told βI didnβt know you were a mechanic, you can just pick it up and bring it to a dealershipβ I also told them they wasted my time and they said they only had the car for one day which was not true. So unprofessional and wasted 3 days of my time without doing anything and barely communicating. I will steer everyone away from this shop
Do not know the quality of their work as they just changed me the tire but the guys conversation was quite aggressive and not friendly at all. Also he said that he included AAA discount in the bill but I do not see in it.
Very pleased with the service here. Ill definitely use them again.
Do not do the inspection at their shop! They will find some small defection on your vehicle (e.g. wiper) and fail you unless you let them repair. The classical hold-up problem. The best method is not to go there. If you do, try to repair it yourself, because it is much cheaper!
I should have read the Yelp reviews before I sent my daughter to Jeff, especially if you read the consistent price gauging theme on other reviews.I appreciate that every business needs to be financially viable. What I donβt appreciate is when someone tries to take advantage of my daughter when needing a simple ABS diagnostics and wheel bearing replacement during a pandemic.I was quoted nearly $400 for a wheel bearing part (+ $200 in labour) where I can buy the exact part from Moog directly for $205 and from Rock Auto for $100... these are consumer retail prices not dealer/shop prices which are wholesaled even cheaper for garages.I thought when we talked he understood that I am a car guy (changed one hub myself) and because of Covid travel restrictions my daughter couldnβt come home to repair the car.Shops make money from parts and labour... I understand. With my experience I was expecting a repair coat of $300 or so all in - not $700. I base this on the previous SKF part I paid $160 Cdn$ to which Jeff said he doesnβt use βChineseβ parts (SKF is a premium bearing company based in Sweden that manufacturers these parts in Canada and the USA and better than the part he was suggesting). When asked if he would install a new part I would provide, his simple answer would you go to a steak house and ask them to cook the steak you provided - we have corking service in Canada where you pay for opening a bottle of wine you bring from home. I was dumbfounded by this BS like his shop has the USDA Prime cuts of auto parts or Michelin trained chefs/mechanics. This is an American made car not some bespoke Ferrari. This is why my daughter didnβt want to deal with any shop directly - so she wouldnβt be taken advantage of. Again every business has a right to make money and I have a right not to use their services and also to share my experiences with others. So hereβs a dad with nearly 40 years of car repairs (brake repair, electrical, engine rebuilds, body work, rear end work etc.) listening to the justification of price gauging and wonder what the price would be if my kid walked in there alone.I had hoped that I had found a shop that could perform other maintenance in the future... you only get one chance to make a bad first impression - mission accomplished!
Jeff is a good person. Well rounded in knowledge of automation and explaining the situation to the client. Jeff does not take money that is not needed. Why I express that is because I have become enlightened to the fact of how other places that you bring your car to when your car needs assistance finds other problems and makes money off of that. I tell you, I have a hard time trusting people enough as it is, I dont need people to lie to my face taking money that is not earned.Nevertheless, Jeff is a good man that does impeccable work. Jeff will ensure that your car is running smoothly again. Now, keep this important note in mind, Jeff is not a factory nor an automated machine that puts cars back together effortlessly. No. Jeff is meticulous and brilliant and understands how and why one part of a car may malfunction and will explain to you in a way that is amazing. Jeff gets you your car back timely fashion that is appropriate to the time needed to look at the car, diagnose, and repair whatever needs to be repaired.I appreciate small businesses like this because the heart of assisting people with something that is important to them (like a car and the convenience and privilege of owning one) is still sound and just. Thank you Jeff for putting Delilah (My 2005 Volkdwagen Beetle) back together again and again.. and the Margarita you gave Delilah was also appreciated! ;)
Took care of my car checked everything out for me
If you are looking for a friendly, family owned and run garage then look no further! Jeff is the best Rochester has to offer. When my check engine light went off I called Jeff, and within the hour my Jeep was being diagnosed and parts were being ordered. Within an hour or so after that I was on my way, wallet in tact! I am a customer for life. And if you are lucky when you show up Jeffβs kids may be there to greet you at the counter! Thanks for all the help!UPDATE: Jeff at Mt. Hope Service provides top shelf service at a very fair price. I had a few minor wear and tear issues with my Jeep that I wanted to get taken care of before they became more of a problem, and I wanted to go to a location that was taking precautions for the current COVID world we are living in. Mt Hope exceeded all expectations, once again! Jeff has a very efficient system for clients to drop off and pick up their vehicles with minimal interactions, and ensures social distancing when interactions do take place. It truly shows that Jeff and the team at Mt Hope understand and care for the community which they service. If you are having car problems during this unprecedented lock down, or after we open NY back up, you can rest assured that Mt. Hope Service will be there for you.
I dont know what more I can say other than Jeff is amazing! hes honest and hard working. I dont know of a better mechanic or any other Auto shop in Rochester where a person can be confident in the work thats being done to his or her vehicle. Thank Jeff
Very kind owner. Respectable to his employees & they do good work, connected with another respectable shop my insurance had my body work done through. Theyre usually busy but tend to communicate well for big projects. He managed to squeeze my tail light replacement in despite a busy day & gave me a generous deal. Honest & trustworthy- key qualities when looking for a good mechanic & such expensive part of your life. Will easily be my go-to neighbourhood mechanic.
The team at Mt. Hope Service Center does fantastic work. We dropped our car off amid the Covid-19 pandemic and MHSC had all appropriate procedures in place to limit human contact and interaction both in their shop and in our vehicle. The business is family owned and operated and we couldnt have asked for better service. Jeff is incredibly friendly and honest with you about your car. We will continue to go back!
Jeff Solomon, owner of Mt Hope Service Center, has taken exceptional care of my cars for the last 30 years. I could not ask for better service. Because of his knowledge, capabilities and expertise, I trust Jeff completely. I am grateful for his many kindnesses and help.
Jeff has served my vehicles for over 40 years. Honest would be first word I would use. Have to trust your mechanic. You can here
Hands down the best auto service Ive ever received. The owner kept me updated throughout the entire process and decision making. The staff is not only knowledgeable but kind and considerate with my investment. Not to mention the incredibly fair pricing! Mt. Hope Service Center is the only place I would recommend for any auto needs!
Jeff and his team are great guys. Its not everyday you come across good, quality, honest, and knowledgeable people like these guys. Jeff is a very approachable guy; he will give you an honest opinion about how the thinks and the rationales of why he thinks that way and discuss options, and is just cool to chat with in general.Jeff and his team are highly qualified mechanics that know what they are doing. They have a running list of certifications and qualifications that are supported by their ability to perform precise and quality work. Jeff will not give up until the problem is fixed and he will go out of his way to make sure that happens while being more than fair. After having my car in with a plethora of problems, Jeff was able to not only figure out the problem and fix it, but return it to me running better than it has in years. It feels like an entirely different car and I could not be happier with the results. I look forward to bringing the car back in the future to have a few more things taken care of. Bottom line: Absolutely Stunning.
Genuinely great guy and doesnt go shopping when working on your car. Honest about what needs to happen and even gave me a full electrical diagnostic for free because I was a AAA member. I guess 46 years of service makes you learn how to treat a customer right!
There are very few places I would recommend without hesitation: Mt Hope Service Center is easily one of them. He has never let me down and I have given him plenty of opportunities. As long as the place is open, Ill continue to go there.
Jeff, is awesome and his mechanic is great. Iam so sorry I dont know his name. You get great service and with great people. Come and check them out. You will not be appointed. Thank you both π€π
Best car matineance/repair experience Iβve EVER had. The owner is a delight. He genuinely cares about his profession and the customer service experience. Overall, great service. Iβll be back. Hopefully not βtoo oftenβ lol
For over 25 years I have relied on Mt. Hope Service for all my vehicle maintenance and tires. I care about my cars, follow the maintenance guidelines, and generally drive them for more than 10 years with high mileage. Mt. Hope Service makes it easy, and save me money over dealer prices. They are honest and do high quality work and give me great advice about my cars. I give them my highest rating and refer friends to them. Please support your local independent businesses who work hard for us every day.
Would not recommend! I went there for my yearly inspection, took 5 mins (did they even look at my car!?) and they would not pass the car based on very minor issues. They then tried to sell me services I didnβt need at a really jacked up rate, thinking they could hold it hostage because of the inspection. And they were rude and threatening about it! Gladly left, took it to a different shop the next day, and passed inspection with flying colors.
I was in Rochester for 3 weeks with my son at strong. I was 2.5 hours from home. He was getting discharged the next day on Monday. So, Sunday morning I got up to a low tire light. On my way back to the hotel I stoped at this service station, not realizing it was closed. I saw a man there and asked if they were closed. He said yes, I then explained my situation, and he gladly Checked and filled all my tires with air. Thank you Chris (?) For taking the time when you were closed to make sure I had a safe 2.5 hr. Drive on the thruway
Great place right next to Strong Hospital. Had my car break down in the hospital garage and the owner was incredibly kind and helped me figure out the issue and get the car towed! Outstanding service thanks to Jeff the owner!!
Theyre always very accommodating to any last minute appointments you need, and as a regular I have received sound advice and touch ups for my car! The owners truly care that the cars are taken care and that the drivers will be safe. Am grateful for such genuine people.
Honestly a great place for your auto repairs!
I have been taking my cars to Jeff for inspections and other work for the last three years since I started as a student at the University of Rochester. His location is very convenient (very easy walking distance from the UR community), and he is very careful and thoughtful in his work. I appreciate his willingness to discuss and help me understand the problems that arise, and he makes an effort to consider unlikely solutions. On my most recent car inspection it appeared that there was a problem with my wheel bearing. When I went to pick up the car, Jeff had been thinking more about the problem, and decided to try a few additional checks for some very unlikely causes of the play in the wheel. Turns out, this fixed the problem, and he saved me $900!
Wont take my cars anywhere else.
Mt. Hope Service has been a great find for me after moving here from Colorado. Jeff is a straight forward guy; and he and his mechanics have done great work on both my and my wifes car. I also purchased winter tires for one of our cars, and I know I got a good deal having shopped around first. I would highly recommend.
Ok, so popped in there to ask if they would checkout an engine fault code that illuminated in the past couple of days. Seriously how much time does this take? Literally 5 minutes.. seriously. Anyway I asked the person if it was possible and he was sort of rude in his response by saying he could not do until Thursday. Seriously, today is Monday morning. Such BS.. Terrible service and attitude. If I could give less than 1 star, I would.
Mt Hope Service Center is a trustworthy, honest business for car maintenance as well as repair. Jeffrey, the owner has always been meticulous with my cars over the 30+ years Ive been going there. I highly recommend him, especially to UR employees as it is within walking distance. Drop your car off for the day and walk to work. Easy-peasy!
Ive been going to Mount Hope Service for the past 8 years and being in a profession that requires input 40,000 miles on my car annually. Im always surprised when I see a review questioning the owners integrity but I guess in todays culture people just want be told what they want to hear. Like a good doctor, Ive felt that Ive always been given the best advice but it wasnt always the quick fix worry about it later solution. Two vehicles and at least 4-6 visits a year for maintenance, Ive NEVER had a problem fixed only to leave the lot and find another or same problem emerge a couple weeks later. Often they have found real problems before I was aware. Ive worked with other mechanics in years past where this just wasnt the case. Mechanics who thought they had the solution until I brought my car back a couple days later (happened too many times to think about). Mount Hope Service is a perfect example of the small guy who gets it right the first time. If you want the cheap, quick, easy fix go somewhere else but know youll be visiting them more often. I rather pay a little more by someone who cares a gets it done right the first time. #500,000mileclub.
Excellent personal service. Friendly staff. Great knowledge of repair on all models.
Jeff and his crew are amazing! Excellent customer service!
Great experience. Needed a fuel pump replaced on my car, and they had it done within 2 days.
Always cordial, helpful and honest. Been going there 40 years. No complaints ever. Friendly but professional service... always
Good service, reliable work, friendly staff and owner. Cant get more convenient if you live in Whitecoat/College Town or work at the hospital!
I moved here from Corning about two months ago and was recommended by a friend to take my car to Mt Hope Service Center. The first thing Jeff said was, It may need a little extra time in the shop so I can make sure I find the problem the first time. That shows me he really cares about his customers and doesnt want to charge them more than he has to because he wants it done right the first time.
Old review text: Three times Jeff helped me for free. And his work seems to be better than in official dealerships.Update 12/04/2019: I stopped using this service because I suspect that Jeff was overcharging me.In June 2019 I asked Jeff to prepare the car for the vacation trip, and he charged me $1140.One of the lines in the bill was oil change. In August 2019 I came to him for NY safety inspection.Given the fact that I paid him so much money just two months before I was sure thatthe car will easily pass the inspection. However, Jeff called me saying that I need to pay $440 plus tax to fix the problems.1. He said that there was no oil in the engine left, that this carconsumes the oil so fast that I have to check the oil level every 2-3 times I visit the gas station. This statement was strange because previously I changed the oil after 6 months, and there were no problems.(In fact, later it turned out to be wrong: as of 12/04/2019 the oil level is still o.k.)2. The problem with the steering rod that did not allow to pass the inspection.Jeff said that after he fixes that, all four wheels must be aligned as well.I showed Jeffs bill for $1140 to colleagues at work and theywere surprised of how much does he charge me and suspected that he(i) takes advantage of my ignorance in everything related to cars,(ii) strongly overcharges me and(iii) makes me pay for the services that are actually not needed.Instead of paying $440 to Jeff, I fixed the problem for $80 in another place. They did not do wheel alignment there, saying that it is not always necessary, and, at most only the front wheels would have been to be aligned, not all four.In conclusion, I will never come to Jeff again because I have doubts about his honesty.Based on the above experience with the oil I also have doubts concerning the quality of his job:I suspect that in June he forgot to change the oil but did not forget to charge for it.
Wow! They really fix the car & great personalities. Great price. Thank you again
Uncommunicative and about $700 more expensive than the place I ended up going to instead.
Been taking my cars to Jeff for years. Top notch service and very convenient location.
Jeff has been servicing my car for years and I have always found him to be trustworthy and very helpful. Highly recommended!
Nice guy. Bolt on my wiper was loose and he came out, diagnosed and fixed the problem for free. Took 5 min. Worth a good review. Would go back.
I pulled into the shop after my daughter had surgery because my cars bumper popped off. Im not from the area but the owner was very friendly and with no problem helped me out in a matter of 5 minutes. Free of charge he had me leaving there ready to go. Didnt ask for a thing. Was the friendliest man I could meet and the best service I could ask for. I will return back for all my cars repair need in the future.
Jeff the owner is a very honest man I go to him for any and everything thats wrong with my car and I trust that hes going to make sure the work is done correctly so I wont have to come back later to get that same thing fixed again.
I walk past this place every day, so I popped in to ask a question about an install if I brought my own parts. The gentleman abruptly said he did not want to get involved. Evidently, he makes [his] money on parts and labour and so has no interest if I supply my own. His tone and attitude were abrupt and he did not at all seem interested in my business. If this is the way they treat potential clients, Im definitely not going there for any kind of work.
Jeff quickly assessed and fixed my problem on the spot. Great man who offers great service.
I would not completely trust this owner. He claimed to have changed my oil a couple months back but when another auto place checked it out last week it was in desperate need of an oil change. He also almost double charged me for a service as well. All the other work he did to my car seems to be holding up satisfactory, and the owner seemed nice enough. Just felt uneasy bc of those two things I mentioned. I would feel more comfortable going to Lefabres on Stone road in Greece, the staff have never let me down once and my father trusts them completely with his auto needs.
Good service
Let me start by saying that I work at College Town across the street from the Mt. Hope Service Center, on top of that I spent the last 2 years as a tire and battery tech at Sams Club so I know this issue just as well as any other professional mechanic. Recently my battery died while I was at work, so I made a call to the service center (or should I say NO SERVICE center). I asked if they had a jump box that I could use and the woman on the other end of the phone immediately took an attitude with me. Instead of politely telling me that the service station didnt have a jump box (which by the way, what kind of shop doesnt have a jump box!?) the woman suggested that I have my car towed from the adjacent parking lot, 30 feet away, and that I just replace the battery starting at a humble $160. You read that right. This mechanical oracle of a desk attendant made the call over the phone, without testing the battery or even looking at the car in general, that replacing the battery was the only option. Also $160 for a battery? Are you kidding me? When I inquired about borrowing jumper cables the woman said We dont give handouts! How the hell do you expect me to make a living? I explained that I just wanted to get home and I was willing to pay pretty much any price for a set of jumper cables. This was too much for the desk attendant to handle, and she had to ask her boss. After being on hold for way too long she informed me that the boss said no. What kind of person wont loan jumper cables to someone in need? Especially someone willing to pay? In the end I had to hitch a ride to Pep Boys, where they actually give a damn about their customers. PEP BOYS GOT ME A NEW BATTERY $60 LESS THAN THE MT. HOPE (NO) SERVICE CENTER. My overall opinion: The only thing worse than the service centers customer service and price gouging is the fact that Google is forcing me to give this 1 star instead of the big fat 0 it deserves.
Very good experience! Saved lots of money!! Even help me clean with my decoration on the key! Best place for students to repair cars!
The owner is fantastic and always willing to help. Hes also very honest and Ive always been happy with his work.
Great family owned and operated business; fantastic service work.
Jeff is someone I have come to very much trust with my vehicle. I highly recommend him to anyone in the area.
Friendly desk and mechanic helped seal and balance my flat tire on walk-in this morning. Gave me a cup of coffee.
Very rude, I asked her how much it cost to replace an alternator and they said 700$ for a part I already bought for only 100$ free shipping. When she knew I have the part with me, she asked if I wanted her to cook the part . rude and theive.
EXCELLENT CUSTOMER SERVICE..
Jeff is knowledgeable, trustworthy, and helpful. 10/10 would recommend.
Always honest, professional & courteous!
Awesome place. Much nicer than Dorscel and Action Towing
Overcharged for remanufactured parts. Scratched my steering wheel somehow. Left bolts off my strut and had me come back to put them on. The strut needed to be replaced shortly after. (This was over a year ago, but the review stands).
Poor workmanship, rude mechanic, very unhelpful and uninformative. Take your car anywhere else. Worst of all he left the inside of my car a mess.
Service is excellent and they are always attentive to your needs
Honest service at a good rate is the standard here.
Super expensive
