They have a large selection for a small store, and their classes are amazing!!

I love the level of professionalism and knowledge at Art Department. They give sound advice, even for those of us on a budget. I always appreciate their kindness and smiles when you walk in the door, too. I have supported them for years, and will continue to, as a local business.

Wanted to avoid Amazon. Buy local. The second I walk in Im told to make sure my mask is above my nose and am given some bazar story about how some random lady died in the local hospital...She then proceeded to to do the standard harping on doing our part or whatever. Ill be honest I stopped paying full attention when i realized she was gonna just keep harping on about masks and whatnot. I made no fuss, kindly bought my items and left...But I do regret purchasing my items here, and am frustrated that my attempt to avoid giving more money to our Amazon overlords only made me want to run back into its tender loving embrace of sweet deals and timely deliveries! But in all seriousness guys, at the end of the day, its hands down the one of the most expensive art supply stores Ive ever seen. My advice is to compare your prices with others, and do your best to not mention anything related to covid, and just stick with talking about and selling art supplies.

I used to only visit the Art Department when I needed art supplies, which, for me, was rare. Now, though, I stop by weekly to check out their ever-changing selection of unique gifts and fun zines. I love how light and fresh and well-organized it is, and the staff is always super friendly. PLUS, and this might be my new favorite, theres an art gallery in the back now!

Theres never been a time Ive walked in here and havent been greeted warmly. They have just about everything Ive needed, but also are very willing to special order items if they dont normally carry that specific product. Staff are knowledgeable and always give advice on things to try if prompted. I just discovered the shop 4 months ago and have already been countless times! I mostly watercolor and they always have paints, brushes, watercolor pencils, and micron pens in various colors.

Art Department always has what I need - whether Im looking for something new to try or just need to pick up some of my favorite supplies. The staff is friendly and knowledgeable. I also enjoy the displays in the Concrete Gallery, at the back of the store.

Best store for buying many different types of art supplies. For artists that aspire to greater things!

The owner/employees are top notch here ..personable, helpful, and knowledgeable!Its a smaller shop thats well departmentalized for easy navigation and if you dont see your favorite brand (ie. Paints, ink, etc) just ask and they may be able to special order what you need... theyre also conscientious n have the safety of all in mind - Masks are required and youll be politely asked to sanitize hands w provided pumps upon entering the store.

Art department has a fabulous selection of high quality paints and brushes and exceptionally friendly staff. Their gift section is pretty darn adorable too.

We don’t live in an area that has quality art supplies, and were traveling to Salem to do some holiday shopping, so we gave this shop a try.Excellent selection of high quality art supplies (by the way, you get what you pay for-good cold press watercolor paper and well made brushes make a HUGE difference). The item I was searching for was 25% off-cheaper than ordering through Blick or Amazon. Lots of other good items were marked down, as well. Fun gift items abound. Give your local shop some business!

This is a great local art supply store. The staff are warm, friendly, and knowledgeable. Dividers are in use at the registers and hand sanitizer is readily available. Great store for an inspirational wander or if you need to grab some supplies.

Today I stopped in here at Art Department LLC to be greeted happily as I entered the door. The owner answered my questions and guided me to my request of blank paper journals. It was a wonderful experience to walk back in time to an old school art supply store. Im not a fan of big box stores even if the prices are better. This owner and her store have my business for my time here in Salem. Hopefully they will soon offer classes (possibly January) for us older rusty artists.I would strongly suggest some christmas or gift shopping here this season!Non of those damn Whos in site which made my day brighter in every way...

Was looking for oil painting supplies, brushes, paint, wax medium, silver and gold leafing, palette knife, mineral spirits, galkyd lite. They had all of this and more. Ill definitely go back. I live on the coast and we dont have a comprehensive art supplier there. This was a treat. Staff was helpful and friendly. From the looks of it they may offer classes as well. All kinds of fine arts supplies.

The Art Departments staff really listens to help me find supplies Im looking for. They also offer a variety of classes open to all skill levels held in a large room at the back of the store (with supportive teachers who are working artists). Its really fun... my friend and I are taking our 4th class now.

They have better prices than amazon on my paper. Finally dont have to buy from that corporate madhouse and can support someone local. They got a great selection.

I really love this place. I go there a lot but sometimes I get the feeling that the owner doesnt respect people that dont immediately know everything about the art supplies. Hes talked down to me on a few occasions but I dont support the store for him. His other employees are amazing and the store is wonderful.

This store was very high up in my mind. The employees are knowledgeable and are very kind. They can answer almost anything you ask. The products come in every shape, size and medium. I found everything from painting, sketching, etching, sculpting and more. I would suggest this store to anyone looking for a good place to get started or just needing some more supplies.

A staple art supply store. Its a small shop but they do have many of the essentials and a good watercolor section. I like how they answer the phone.

Used to shop here a lot; in recent years, the 3 times I have come in, the woman behind the counter has followed me around and made comments implying I was shoplifting? Unfortunate, as I had a studio art minor, and was trying to support local business. Most items are overpriced anyway.
