Havent been there for years but was in the area. Good selection and reasonable prices. Service is great. Would be five stars but stock is largely paperback and trade paperback while most of my wants are hardcover. Dont let that put you off, though. Go there.
RUDE! Zero customer service. Buy ONLINE! Couldn’t count change back, tried to short $10. Snapped at my daughter for asking if Jumanji game was in basement! Said she couldn’t run books under bar code scanner and talk simultaneously. So we silently watcher her scan 10 books, take all our money and give no change back! Rude, abrasive and made entire experience toxic. One star too generous.
Been going here since they opened. It is amazing to support local folks and have a wonderful used bookstore experience. Oh and right now they have puzzles for sale! Wonderdul helpful staff, and a delightful kitty to make your browsing time magical.
I absolutely love the book been I have been buying books from them for 25 years the staff is always friendly and I make a point to visit every time I go to Salem Oregon.
This place is heaven for book fans! Something for everyone. Friendly and helpful staff.
Amazing book selections, wonderful staff, and an adorable kitty. This is one my favorite book stores. They have a very good selection of Manga, which is why i visit every week, to see what may be new in the manga section. But the staff is extremely friendly. 10/10 would recommend this bookstore.
This is the last independent bookstore in town. For that reason alone, we try to frequent it as much as possible. I have no idea what their financial situation is, but Id rather pay a bit more for books from a local, independent store, than a little less for books from Amazon or Wal-Mart/Target.The store itself is well stocked, and has a bit of everything for all interests. Theyre good about ordering things if they dont have them in stock as well.My only quibble with them is that sometimes it feels like theyre trying way too hard. Theres a hand-written sign on the door about their cat and how they never know where it is and it sometimes scratches people. This seems more for effect than an actual warning. Kind of a Hey, were a cool, quirky independent bookstore! We have a cat! Its weird in here! statement.I also found some of their reactions to Covid restrictions to be a bit performative. Ive got no problem with masks, social distancing, and limited entry, but their policies were awfully strict, and started way earlier, and ended way later than the restrictions were put in place by the government. It seemed like the staff got a kick out of being able to tell people what to do - though, this totally could be me reading into the situation. For all I know, they have some immune compromised employees and want to keep them safe.At any rate, this is a very minor quibble. Im glad the store is around and seems to be doing well in the current climate. Keeping places like this around is in everybodys best interest, so well keep going as long as theyre around.
Nestled in Downtown Salem, the Book Bin is a fantastic local bookstore. It doesnt have the most expansive selection, but you are guaranteed to find something there.
Employees are super helpful and friendly, they pretty much always have what Im looking for AND at a great price
I absolutely adore the atmosphere! Plus with so much more than just books!
Friendly employees, great atmosphere, and fantastic finds for reasonable prices!Plus, gotta love the cat!
I was a woman and I went shopping. Great experience
So many books we loved it. New and used.
Awesome book store, very reasonable prices
The last amazing bookstore that Salem has to offer. You can order titles if they dont carry off hand and they have a pretty decent mycology section.Plus, visiting with the stores patrol cat always makes my day!
Book Bin is a fantastic store with really helpful and knowledgeable staff. They buy used books and sell new, used, and remainder books, as well as calendars.Rose the cat lives at the store, and is friendly (if you can find her).
10 out of 10 would recommend! Awesome store and truly wonderful people.
The largest, and pretty much only, place to find new and used books in Salem. Two floors of books, as well as other gifts and things. Its a downtown staple.
Cute and quite place with an adorable shop cat. I would sit here for hours if there were tables amd coffee to do so! The staff has always been friendly and are always willing to special order books if they dont have it in stock.. they also have a great selection of used books. The only thing that would make it better would be a more robust online interface where customers could check stock online or order books for pickup rather than having to call.
Great selection and very helpful people
I can’t wait to see what book drags me in next and I am for sure getting it from here. This book store is located in the heart of down town and the vibe is just on point!
Well cant believe it was prepandemic since I visited this store. I love independent bookstores and it is my way to experience as many as I can. We were on vacation and first time to the city and this was the first one we visited. So perfect. Just right in size and very accommodating to us. My name is Roger Browning and I am a writer from Texas. A rancher born in the life, but writing is my great passion. Another passion is that I am drawn to the very many different ways a personal store presents itself and the chosen displays and genres desired for the positioning. I loved every minute here and I promise after covid is put to rest, to once again visit this store again. Please support your independent bookstore. Times have been difficult, but they need you more now than ever, just as much as you need them too. Dont miss the chance to visit this store. I believe you will be glad that you did. My name is Roger Browning and my book is now available on Amazon. It is about a modern day ranching family in Texas, that are much troubled with inherited greed and dysfunction, and its title is, The Reckoning of Rance.
Hypnotic. Amazing. Rose is the most wonderful cat I have ever pet (even if she does walk into out of bounds areas and thud prevent me from touching her more) and everyone there is so kind. The book selection is absolutely scrumptious. One of the cashiers remembered my participation in open mics they hosted pre-pandemic and I almost cried out of joy. This establishment is at the top of my list of local Salem stores and I will buy every book I can from them as opposed to Shamazon.
One of my favorite book stores so many books to choose from great selection
INCREDIBLY knowledgeable staff at this location. Anything I am looking for is almost always known to one of the employees. When they have to trust their computers, what Im looking for is usually in store and if not, obtainable to be sent to the store for pick up.The atmosphere is good and the energy and knowledge of the staff is always appreciated.
Amazing book store with huge selection! They were happy to pull a big stack of books for my daughter to browse through on the outside pickup table. They nailed the pandemic version of book store browsing, arranged via messenger and fully no-contact. Thank you for helping recreate a treasured hobby of ours!
Ive loved this place my whole life. Always friendly and amazing.
Reasonable prices and lots of choices
The many times Ive ordered books there I am met by mostly disagreeable employees....not a helpful place if your looking to find a book...think I will try amazon
Great local shop with expansive selection. Love on the cat while youre there!
Love this place: friendly and helpful staff, great selections, good prices, local business.
I love book stores and The Book Bin does not disappoint. I love the smell of books and browsing the aisles. Reminds me a my childhood withy Grandma. I inherited my love of reading from her and going here brings me happy memories.
For years, this has been a solid stop for books, both new and used. Nice to see their very solid covid procedures in place for the new year.
Amazing selection, amazing staff. Plus they have a store kitty named rose that is the sweetest baby angel. 10/10 would reccomend highly. Definitely worth just popping in just to see the kitty.
Classic local bookstore. They either have the book youre looking for or they can get it for you. The staff know the store and can get you any book thats on any shelf.
Customer service is always excellent. This is where I always go to find childrens books with diverse & multicultural characters & storylines.
The place is great! I love going here often for new books. But it can he a shame cause the prices are pretty high. Im a graphic novel fan but Im not buying a $12.00 graphic novel that Ill finish in less than 5 minutes.
Nice people, loved the store and the choices on books.
Amazing store, support local bookstores!!!!
Nice place to find books. Not as extensive as stores in PDX but very acceptable for Salem.
The Book Bin is one of our favorite Salem businesses. We miss going in but theyve done a great job of serving customers during COVID. Weve had books delivered to our house in less time than the online options.
Very helpful!
Tons of great books and super helpful crew! Deffintly am going back for more.
I am a frequent visitor to Oregon every summer my family vacations here. I look forward to shopping at this bookstore, as it was my favorite. I walked in there today and greeted by a short haired woman wearing glasses. She approaches us to tell us the coronavirus rules and I said thank you sweetheart. She rudely yells at me not to call her sweetheart. Not in way that a professional customer service person is suppose to act with a frequent customer. I will never ever go back to this store if this how the owners let their employees treat their customers. Beware, no telling what they are allowed to do to their customers. Worst customer service person I have ever dealt with EVER! No star ⭐
Outstanding bookstore with friendly staff and quirky offerings. Great place to buy books from local authors and gifts for friends. This downtown location is a Must See for bookworms looking to move to Salem. Many events are hosted here, and its just overall a clean and friendly environment to be in. Also! The store cat is so good!Warning: like many other businesses downtown, there are not public restrooms.
Helpful but low on stock
I stop here every time Im in Salem, Ive come across some great finds!
I love buying books here, however they could show a little more kindness when it comes to the covid-19 social distancing protocol. The world needs more kindness especially now.
Very nice place with used and new books. Theyre following all the covid guidelines, so you may have to wait for your turn to get in.
Huge selection and friendly staff.
Say hi to the bookstore cat!
Great selection of new and used books. Friendly, helpful staff.
Good selection, good experience
Great variety of books!
Wide selection of books of every variety, store cat was lovely, my only suggestion is that they dust more often as I cant go in for long periods of time without my allergies acting up.
A truly worthwhile visit, great selection, wonderful people, very reasonable trade in prices, easy returns, great atmosphere.
Great book store, fantastic staff always really friendly. Amazing cat that you may have the pleasure of getting to pet.
The whole vibe of this place rocks. The cat is nice to play with, the set up is nice. The books are pretty well priced and the location is near some good food places! A good setup for a pleasing afternoon.
We love this place we always have to find rose the cat. So cute and the book store staff is nice as well
Great selection of books.
Great place glad they have managed to stay open
Great place for new and used books. Staff is very kind and helpful if there is something youre looking for. They have two floors worth of books and even a rare book area too that you can visit on weekdays. Check their website if you want to see what kind of rare books they carry from first editions, author signature, very old books etc that they have listed online. If youre lucky, you might see the shop kitty sleeping somewhere inside the bookstore!
Books are so of here! Which are always good to have available to read when an ice storm causes the electricity to go out.
This book store has an incredible inventory of reasonably priced new and used books for all ages and interests. When I want a particular book, I know I can call the Book Bin and have them go and get it off the shelf and hold it for me if they have it. If they dont, they will order it for me. The staff are friendly and helpful, and they go out of their way to make sure you get what you need. They do have a resident store cat, but I rarely see it. I love this store, and I go there often.
Limited selection in some categories. Worth a look if youre wandering around town.
The Book Bin is an excellent place for the browsing serious reader. It is set up in a similar fashion as Powells in Portland, in that used and new books are placed side by side on the shelves, allowing the customer a choice between price and editions. Its strength is in used books and remainders, which are often outstanding values. If you are looking for a particular new book, you will probably be purchasing it online anyway. Nevertheless, it does have a good selection of the best new work out there, even if it eschews the notion of the mass market best sellers list. The result is a classic way to productively waste a pleasant two or three hours finding reading treasures you didnt know you had to purchase.
Beautiful store with a great selection of books records and much more. They sell their items at such a reasonable price its hard to believe I would ever purchase books anywhere else. They sell both new and used products but its hard to tell the difference between the two all their stuff is in great shape and I promise you will enjoy your time here. Make sure you have a clear morning or afternoon because you will most definitely be here a while!
Shame muzzles required here
Always a pleasure to browse this store. Usually find a book that peaks my curiosity.
The staff knows their inventory and are very friendly and helpful. Prices are affordable even for people living on unemployment
Ok, so this place reeks (in a good way) of old worn out books. I love books and loved the variety this place offers. Cant wait to go back.
One of my favorite places to get books. I love the fact there are used mixed in with the new. You never know what you will get! And best watch cat ever!
The lady refused to order a book for us. She was rude and presumptuous. I was with my 86 year-old mother. We needed to order a book right away about her heart condition. The lady rudely informed us that we needed to pay in advance as if we didnt know that. Then she walked away and never looked up the book on her computer and ignored us. I was so humiliated my jaw dropped. The whole point of going into a store was to have face-to-face help with getting a book instead of getting it from Amazon. The store should find out who this person was and fire them immediately. I ordered the book online and I am never going back to this stupid store.
Wonderful selection, new and used, very helpful personnel! Great place to explore and find gems of books!
ONE WOULD THINK THAT SINCE BOOK STORES ARE ALMOST EXTINCT, THAT CURRENT BOOKSTORES WITH LOYAL CLIENTS WOULD NOT BE RUDE AND OR CONDESCENDING. EDITED : THANK YOU FOR YOUR RESPONSE HAVE A GREAT DAY
Okay I leave a lot of positive reviews but WITH GOOD REASON! This store rocks. They have a great assortment of used and new books.I go here to get presents for my friends with kids. They carry lots of local authors and childrens books with diverse characters. They have a lot of sheet music as well which I love among all their other book store type things. Overall great spot to shop!
Good selection
I used to visit this place when I was in college. Still the same great atmosphere. Fantastic and knowledgeable staff. Fun place to browse.
Love this place, good vibes, easy to navigate and fun place to browse books!
Very awesome place to find interesting books, went in there with girlfriend for finding a book for her daughters birthday and now I will be spending most of my paycheck after bills there come Friday, so many books I want! Staff is also very helpful and courteous even when it was right before they close for the night.
I could get lost in the Book Bin for hours. I love book stores like this, you never know what you will find. If youre looking for something in particular and they dont have it they will try locating it at one of their other locations or even order it for you. The staff are friendly and knowledgeable. Just a great local book store.
Fantastic employees and selection from new to used. This is the best used book store in town and the trade-in policy is the best around. They give you full credit for your books and allow you to use that store credit in it is full amount for your purchase. They dont do the can only use your credit for 50% of the total purchase nonsense.
This is a great bookstore! They have a good selection of books, from fiction to cookbooks to philosophy and more. This book fan is happy with this find!
My favorite local bookstore! The staff is always knowledgeable, fun, and accommodating, and their selection of books and gift ideas is vast. A couple caveats: there arent many used books of recently-released texts, and their trade credit program is very...disappointing. And thats a general consensus Ive gathered from numerous local bookworms of all ages. [Ex: two new, mint-condition novels valued at $30 equalled $2 store credit. :( It deters many people from donating or trading their books in here....] And more local authors, please! So a solid four stars. A fifth one would immediately rank if their trade credit would improve. That being said, I will happily continue to support these guys as theyre the best in the area and I love what they do to encourage reading and literary events in Salem! (Also--the Rare Book Room is a must-see!)
Helpful desk; extensive literature & childrens section. You can find reasonably priced books & if you cannot find a title, most often times the info desk is able to order one for you. On the one hand during my last visit, it appeared that the book I was searching for had no copies in the store & the gal at the info desk searched & gave me her honest input that Id probably be able to order a cheaper copy online. Overall this is a great brick and mortar local bookstore.
A big selection of books.
Love it. Good experience for my family
Closed. When they are supposed to be open. From out of state, what a disappointment.
Always happy to come in. Such a variety new and used. Affordable and if they dont have it they can as almost always order it for you.
Stopped by looking for a mc manual and found a double book set on HD, nice pic n info, what a find, never know what youll find! Nice place.
A real used bookstore!
Awesome selection of books! The staff are very kind and helpful. Definitely my favorite local bookstore.
A little pricey, but still the best book store in Salem. Definitely buy from them (or sell books as I did). Otherwise Salem wont have any great book stores one day!
My daughter and I were Christmas shopping and we enjoyed browsing through the books and calendars there. The cashier was very friendly, and coming across the watchful store cat was a delight as well!
This is a great bookstore with a wide selection of new and used titles. They will order titles in to the store for pick up as well. It would be nice if the staff was friendlier though. Whenever I go in they are usually sitting at the front counter talking, and seem put out by questions. Overall. Its a great place if you want to browse, or know where to look for something on your own.
Salem’s definitive book store. A great option for used books, in a comfortable and friendly environment, with lots of variety and helpful staff to assist. Price on their used books are a little steep, but understandable considering the business and competition they face from online retailers. If you can’t wait for that Amazon order, Book Bin is well worth checking out or browsing for a new best seller to read.
Amazing and cozy. Super friendly and knowledgeable staff. Good prices. I just cant praise this place enough.
