This is a hole in the wall store with a decent collection ranging from rock to jazz to blues and quite a lot more. The store can get quite cramped if there are a lot of people inside. In case it helps, it’s walking distance from City Lights bookstore. We spent around half an hour, which was more than enough time to peruse their collection.
Nice little shop for digging for musical treasures. Mike was great for this out if town guy to talk to. He knows his stuff and is passionate about music. This is what classic record stores were about. Happy to see stores like this still exist and I will be back.
This place is a must for anyone who loves hunting for hidden gems. This was my first time so its a bit daunting when you first walk in the door. Im glad I kept going and followed the narrow path through the stacks of vintage stereo components to the basement stairs. Awaiting you at the bottom of the stairs is a vast sea of vinyl. Roughly organized by genre, if youre looking for something alphabetically, you should probably turn around and head back out of the store. For those, like myself, who still enjoy the thrill of the hunt, you could easily spend hours, if not days in this magical, musty space searching for that record you just simply cant live without. Most albums are priced at $5 with some classical titles commanding $10 each. The way I see it, youre visiting a museum, and for a mere $5-$10 donation, you get to take a pretty cool souvenir home with you. Paying with cash might make for a better deal. Im definitely coming back the next time Im in town!
Nice record store with a big selection of classic rock and jazz, but missing a lot of pop and electronic albums.-1 star because its very small and difficult to maneuver with many people in there.
Its easy to see that their things are genuine! This wine business comes highly recommended from me.
A small store with a wide selection of music of many genres. Great posters.
A real hole in the wall record shop. Lots of classic rock and some other gems
This place is GREAT! I had a really nice experience, chatting with Mike the owner who helped me find a bunch of fantastic, new artists once I told him what I was looking for. Key is, keep an open mind and explore artists you might not have heard of. Great conversation around all things - not just music.I will be back the next time I am in town!
Great selection of records
Mike is a true wax poetic. He knows his stuff. This is what American record stores are made from. Eclectic collection, hard to find pieces that are at a price point that any collector could appreciate. I can not think of a store in the area I would rather shop or dig. I wish they were closer to me back on the east coast. Miles Davis to Chuck Brown and the soul searchers to The Cramps. Respect.
Perfect record store for leisurely perusal -- lots of unexpected treasures
They do have a nice collection but the people that work there are not very nice. I went to buy a slip mat for my new turntable and when I got in there the guy was on the phone and refused to acknowledge me for about 5 mins he was just talking about what records he was selling online. I waited patiently and even found a slip mat that was on the side where the merchandise was. It was definitely used but they had about a dozen of them. Finally the guy got off the phone and rudely asked what I wanted, when I said I wanted to buy a slip mat he told me they werent for sale. I went out of my way to support a small business and really got treated poorly.
Great guy that owns the place awesome selection of vinyl records and much more
One of the best places in SF to search for vinyl. They also have tons of vintage stereo equipment and instruments as well. Be sure and check out the basement at the Green Street shop... I could (and have) spent days down there flipping through the stacks. This place should be on every music lovers bucket list. You wont be disappointed!
Great like spot for rarities and more. A lot packed in a tiny space, but definitely worth the look for casual and serious collectors.
Good selection of used and new records. I ended up buying 3 records of 1960s music. Friendly and helpful staff.
Great store, good selection, knowledgable staff. Picked up a 12 I had been eyeing for a while and also a copy of The Great Rock n Roll Swindle. North Beach is still the heart and sole of SF.
Great selection on pretty much everything from vinyl records to Cds new and old. 101 Music has a simple organization of all their stuff so you can come in and find what you are looking for. Whether its by name or genre. The upstairs is great for movie fans. There is also a corner for wall poster aficionados. There are often music performances here. I suggest checking often here for new music and performances from up and coming artists. I give this place four stars because its difficult to track someone to help you. Even when you ask, they say theyre busy doing something else. Great store with great music.
This is an amazing record store. Theres no pandering to any sort of crowd, its loosely organized, and there is the serene joy of sifting through crates of records to find a gem. The records that we got were all in good or great condition, too!Dont go with a goal in mind, go with a sense of adventure.
I purchased my first Van Morrison cassette from this guy. he took really good care of it being that it is so old, and it sounds great in my car!
Walked in looking to spend some money on vinyl and ended up turning around walking out when guy working in store started bitching under his breathe as soon as I walked in. He didn’t even let me ask a stupid question before he started in with the poor man’s Jack Black routine mocking the records I was looking at (Grateful Dead). The record selection looked pretty decent but way too many happy and helpful vinyl sellers these days to spend your money with than this twit. I would expect and appreciate it from a younger staff but from the washed up owner is an old routine.
Went in to explore, the guys a bit of a character. But when you ask him, he gives you the right response. So that you get to make a good decision regarding your system.
Nice little shop to pick up some classic records
An amazing selection of new and old. All genres imaginable! Relatively pricey, but occasionally they have good deals
Could of spent the day there...great selection at reasonable prices
Thi is an awesome place with a cool selection of literally about a million records and used insteumwnts( I bought one of my Armstrong flutse here) I love the staff... not so much the owner. He is cold and rude, just as other reviews will show. Other than that, this place is just plain awesome!
Bought good stuff there. Almost Dead, Airplane and Westcoast Psychedelic. Good prices, good guy, good conditions...felt fine there.Recommended.
Funky little place. Crammmed with good stuff.
Here is what happened to me last night:I was eating delicious food with my girlfriend enjoying myself walking into this place. I walk in and the person that worked there (owner?) was in the end of the store. I walked up there cuz i wanted to see the records in that specific corner. I walk up to him smiling and greeting him as friendly as i can. He walks by me saying in the meanest and rudest tone (sounding kind of paranoid): Why are you looking at me and walk up to me? Keep in mind he works the store and i could be asking him a question but i honestly was just being friendly smiled at him and wanted to walk by him. After that I leave the store saying jesus christ. He repeats me yelling yeah jesus christ i reply: dude you are really rude by now me and my gf are out of the door already and he yells out of his throat after us no you are really rudeI have travelled around quite a lot and have encountered friendly and unfriendly people but i have never seen anything like this, im speechless...
Amazing place filled to the rafters with classic records.
Posters, vinyls, CDs, guitars, and other music-related merchandise packed into a narrow room.
Looking for Otis Redding and scored within 5 minutes. Store is perfectly laid out and a real treasure trove.
Once you go into this shop, you will be amazed feeling like looking into kaladescope! You should also check tons of vinyl in crades at the basement of its annex right across the street (513 Green St)!
I called for info about a record I wanted to see if they had in stock. I opened with Hi, I googled you, how are you and he said a bit busy. I started to explain what I was after and then I realized he had hung up on me. How do you run a business like that?
Really neat little shop, stumbled across it while walking around North Beach with friends. Check out the bottom floor.
SF did it again. I felt compelled to hit this store after my boyfriend and I meandered the streets of North Beach during a festival. I wasnt drunk, nor did I have a hint of alcohol breathing in and out of my breath.101 Music drew me in when I accidentally stumbled onto their window display of dusty looking banners, vintage concert fliers, and a poster of Jimmy Hendrix calling out my name. Oh yeah, I felt disheveled already without feeling intoxicated. I was deliberately drunk off of the smell of old vinyl and the filtering tunes of Chet Atkins playing in the background as I rummaged through a history of newfound music.101 Music reminded of old toys we once played with during our childhood and forgotten about them until we somehow discovered our toys sitting in stacked boxes in the attic waiting to be played with again. I felt like a kid again after picking up an old Beatles record in my hand and swaying my hips to Chet Atkins singing to me about happy days, completely in awe and feeling giddy I smiled at the thought of sleeping inside here with all these great and forgotten artists, bands, musicians, instruments and an 8-Track hiding on top of a shelf!Dont get it twisted when you think Im too young to know of these things. I find beauty in a lot of weird things, but music means a lot to me. I love hip hop, funk, hipster music, indie rock, and electronic music that we all hear nowadays. However, Im a young chick with an old soul. I love the classics that you dont hear anymore unless you have the tenacity to download tunes off the internet or stream it off Pandora radio. You see my friends, it doesnt get any better than seeing vintage records, tapes and CDs and listening to good music that you probably might not ever hear again. I hope that in the generations that come ahead, I dont want old records and awesome music to fade. Just as I would hate to see 101 Music lose business too. Lets keep mom and pop stores alive!!
Great selection of records. Best in SF
This guy literally knew everything about music! He has over 50,000 records in his basement!
Ok no metal or hard rock
Pretty cool place for hidden vintage vinyl.
Its going out of business soon.
Good selection on blues - jazz.
Great music store and unique!
