This place has the best sustainable food prices in the city and options to really keep on a budget with quality food. By that I mean they have bulk food that will fill a pantry while supporting local producers. They also offer EBT and senior discounts. On top of that, I think the people working here actually like their jobs. How arent more grocery stores like this?
Gotta love a COOP, this is the place if you are vegetarian (or even one of those vegan people!). great bulk supplies of beans, grains, spices, etc. Nice bulk supply for liquids too - soap, shampoo, etc. decent cheese counter. Produce keeps it real - not as fancy of course as Whole Foods, but as locally sourced and organic as possible. Not my favorite place to buy bottled/canned things, as they tend to be a bit on the high side there. Great flour varieties! The bomb for bakers.
An enormous organic grocery store, what a SF gem! Best bulk selection in the Bay Area—flours, dried fruits, nuts, dried soups, granolas, rices, beans, and plenty more. (Backpackers, get your bean or quinoa flakes, instant soups, hummus mix, potato flakes, and many other great dehydrated meal building blocks!) Plenty of other excellent organic options in the produce section and great finds in every eclectic aisle. They truly have it all, have a wide variety of it all, and at reasonable prices (and sometimes good sale prices). Plus, the workers are all absolutely fantastic and kind and seem to genuinely love the store. Like a more local, organic version of the employee vibe at Trader Joe’s... does that make any sense?Anyway, love it here. You’ll probably love it too.
Floor staff is friendly and helped me find things around the store. But the cashier overcharged me about $110. I came back home and noticed that one of the items was weighed incorrectly as 25lbs when it was in fact less than 1lb, which resulted in the whopping difference. I tried to resolve the matter over phone, hoping they would reverse the charges over phone. I live around 1 hr drive away and didnt want to spend 2 hrs to go to the store in person over this matter. I offered to send pictures of the actual product which is still in its bag; customer service was even able to bring up receipt of my purchases from their records, I also explained that since I lived more than 40 miles away it would be difficult to come in person for this. I figured if they have online shopping, if they have actual records of my shopping, they should be able to reverse these charges over phone. But I was asked to present the bill/ receipt in person in order to be issued a refund.Mistakes happen in the course of business but how it is handled says a lot about the organization. I wish Rainbow Grocery would have reversed my charges after I send them pictures/proof, without inconveniencing the customer for the stores mistake.
A very well stock and thoroughly Diversified, and useful selections 4A natural food store. Housewares the staff providing great customer care and great variety a little pricey ; but worth it when you consider all the things that they have as well as the variety in there goods for the, kitchen and in the other self-help needs including cosmetology things hair care, skin care and then some. the naturopathic homeopathic when you see the spectrum of inventory available is vast. I give it 4 stars and the only reason why its not five is because of the fact that most of the people working herbal by the ounce are not as fluent with the uses of each herb as most people need when they seek out more information on any of the Natural Herbal processes to remedy making or healing or even just learning how to navigate one self on the natural pathways for definitively identifying what one needs to solidify their knowledge to choose the best possible personal path through to Wellness and overall well-being.
The money spent at coops generally circulates within the community scores more times than when spent at a corporate big box. It also is more health and environmental conscious than, say, wally is.I had a delicious lunch of microgreens and curry potato samposa, kombucha and blackberries, banana, plum. And yogurt, all organic. Delicious! And such friendly and skilled staff!
Good for bulk. Healthy options. NO hot food or hot bar. Lots of glass bottle-ware for cosmetic and health products sold in bulk in-store.
Great store with a lot of different choices. Prices are pretty decent considering that many small grocery stores have similar prices, so it is not surprising how the prices on some items are more expensive. They have a lot of kitchen stuff, food, and decent produce.
This is laughably one of the worst stores I have ever visited in my life and the most unpleasant menagerie of clowns I have ever had the displeasure of meeting. The employees are incredibly incompetent and rude, unable to fulfill even the simplest of special orders. They frequently place customers’ special orders on the shelf without informing them of the product’s arrival, as phoning a customer is a little too much of a labor for these jokers who seem to pride themselves on their incompetence. The cashiers frequently overcharge or miscount the items in an order, and the brain trust in the returns section suffer from illiteracy so extreme that they struggle to decipher their own receipts to find the obvious discrepancy. If you call to check the stock of a product, they relay the wrong information all the time, leading to wasted trips and hostility from the utterly confused think tank they call their staff. One genius named Bodi/Modi/Jodi (?) who bungles the special orders all the time expressed, in a fit of stoner paranoia, his fear of getting burned on a special order, despite the offer of a full deposit, mistaking a simple order for some black market transaction.I have never encountered a more ridiculous collection of clowns as I have at this store, but I wish them the best in their crusade to flex their retail muscle to the bitter end just to defend their laughably mind-boggling incompetence. Anytime I think on this store I am now overwhelmed by unshakeable fits of laughter over how such a bumbling group of hostile, knuckle-dragging dunderheads are able to function each day and, through sheer luck, manage not to capsize this floundering store by their tidal wave of incompetence. All I can say is thank you for the laughs.
Awesome vegan products at Rainbow! Loads of vegan meats, vegan cheese, vegan milk, vegan ice cream! Also excellent produce offerings including Oyster Mushrooms & Maitake Mushrooms (both are a great meat substitutes if you know what youre doing!). Great selection of health products and supplements. They also have items in bulk and soap & detergent refill stations!
I always feel so good shopping here. Seriously. No joke! Rainbow Grocery has literally lifted me out of several depressions before. This place is amazing!
Here you can find everything healthy. Other stores dont offer healthy choices. Store is clean and theres plenty of parking spaces. Freeway is nearby I go to Rainbow store all the way from Castro Valley, I wish I could find a store like this by my house.
Prices were a bit high for my taste, also this place does not carry meat. It does have good parking and very short lines for a quick shop and go experience.
I could hang out here for hours! slightly more expensive than your average grocery store but this is not your average grocery store! an amazing selection of everything. extensive vitamin selection and tons and tons of natural supplements creams salves etc. a great place to buy a gift as well. it’s just ....everything. 💓
Best grocery store in the whole wide world.
Lots of bulk food options - spices, chilies, teas, medicinal herbs. Great mushroom and produce selection.Definitely on the pricy side.
Rainbow Grocery is a wonderful place! Ive been shopping here for many years. Happy customer!
Forget everything you know about grocery shopping and learn the right way. This is the place where your zero waste experience begin. Everything is made to make this transition easy.Follow the steps below, satisfaction guaranteed! It ran the numbers, comparing $/lbs and it is either the same price or cheaper than anything you could find at Whole Foods (sometimes 50% cheaper), and 100% less wasteful.
Amazing place if you are a vegetarian, I really enjoyed shopping there, the tea section was my favorite!
I love the organic selection! The crew are super friendly!❤
I love the store and the people are really nice too and it smells so good great store
Best organic grocery store and it is completely different than other grocery stores. One of the best grocery store in San Francisco and here vegetable, fruits are completely organic. The important part is that here all groceries selling by cooperative farmers, business man. This grocery store is completely cooperative store.
Widest range of groceries that I hv even seen in San Francisco. Best part of of it, most items are unbranded and loose, so you see it, and can take as little as required.
The best organic food store. Ive lived on both West and East coast and hand downs best selection and variety from fresh organic produce, to fresh baked foods, great selection of cheese, housewares are always fun to look through and buy something cute and useful. Theres even a huge selection of supplements. Dont forget to browse the awesome gifts section...always a cozy stop to buy a gift just before getting in line. Only downside.... sometimes employees can be rude, but not all.
Im sure some may disagree with me, but in spite of the largely perfect items in a very well kept store, I keep wishing they would have fish.
A wide variety of high quality organic produce at reasonable prices. Excellent cheeses from fine imports to well priced locals. Craft bakery items from pies to bread. Bulk section second to none: herbs and teas, nuts and legumes, flours and cereals. Also bulk oils, honeys, and butters. Clean cheerful ambience, well attended by knowledge clerks, and neatly organized. The one stop store for all your healthy health food needs and wants.
The best store ever! Literally everything in bulk so you can try a fancy spice for under $1 to see if you like it. They have the best selection of plant based, local and ethically sourced foods. I dont shop anywhere else anymore. Plus its a co-op so everyone there is getting well paid. You can tell its a good business youre also supporting unlike the big grocers.
Love this market! They have the best grocery store flower arrangements. I can always find my specialty health products. And the produce is always fresh.
A store for foodies. For us the most seductive part is their large selection of bulk items esp. herbs and spices in vats and containers that you can buy in any size portions. Its fun to just walk through the isle and enjoy all the aromas. It’s amazing to see spices for Indian cuisine, the organic kind, coming from growers within the US. The store has a layout and a charm that draws you to want to come back, of course with bunch of money in your pocket as some of the good quality food ingredients would cost you!
I have been shopping with Rainbow for over 20 years. I always love browsing and filling bags in the bulk herbs and spices section. A customer can get lost in the diverse books, greeting cards, and gift section. The variety of healthy and local products is impressive. I love the newly remodeled configuration of the store. I like to come early and beat the crowds.
Cashier Lou short for Loise I believe was very nice. Everyone seems happy at Rainbow Grocery
This store quickly and masterfully adapted to Covid with a system for lining up with distance but still moving check out along quickly. Helpful staff and the BEST selection over Whole Foods and all the rest!
If you only go to one grocery store in San Francisco make it Rainbow Grocery. It has a bit of everything but the best of that thing. The bulk and produce sections are outstanding as well as the supplements section. Their staff is as friendly as they come. Free parking. Expect to pay premium for most items, understandably so. It is SF after all and very good quality. Whether you can make Rainbow Grocery your weekly shopping store depends on your wallet, hut the quality is undeniable.
Such a pleasure to shop at with a huge variety of fun healthy things, all kinds of spices in bulk, tees, grains, raw milk and so much more! It was hard leaving this place haha ill be back!
My Favorite Hangout Whenever Im In Town. The Employees Are Absolutely Wonderful. Enjoy 😉 😉
Some fresh vegetables are good value, many organic protein to keep me healthy, I can feel the effect on my body!
Get all my herbs and things here me and my best friend to make tea love it
My go-to place for bulk refill! They are absolutely fantastic! Spices, fresh & dry pasta, rice, beans, tea, vinegar, oil, soy sauce, kimchi, detergent, shampoos, you name it.They have complimentary biodegradable bags to pack. But I always being my own reusable bags and containers. You get $0.05 back for each container/bag.
Bring your own container/bottle kind of store. Some price tags raise questions and eyebrows.
Great grocery to find things that others dont sell.
My original review is below for posterity. However, I can no longer recommend shopping here. Why? Rainbow continues to support anti-science, anti-vaccine grifter Dr. Mercola by selling his products and running promotions with his company (see photos). What a shame that a Rainbow has eschewed science for conspiracy and is now a business partner with a company that profits from killing people with vaccine disinformation. These are Rainbows ethics now.Original review:Ill summarize my love for Rainbow this way. Its a 5 minute walk to the Whole Foods in my neighborhood. Despite this, I still drive 15 minutes each way to Rainbow and spend ~90% of my grocery budget there. Probably the best grocery store Ive ever patronized. 🌈🌈🌈
This place is awesome. Great selection of natural, wholesome food.
This supermarket is one of my favorites because of its convenient location, lunch, a diverse selection of reasonably priced beverages, and the best deli and meat counter in town! Many of the employees were kind and supportive. Im sure Ill be here next week to pick up a couple items.
My favorite place for bulk. Seriously, wild rice, barley, chamomile, beans and lentils, all organic and loose to buy by weight? Excellent. That being said, proceed with caution and use a list. Its so easy. So so so very, I mean, extremely easy to overspend. Organic, local, pasture raised eggs? Sure. Fancy, hand poured milled soap? No problem. Gourmet small batch ice cream? They got you.Its an employee owned co-op though, so you cant really be mad.Worth the trip, the treasure hunt and 100% worth it for bulk. Including soap and beauty products, but thats another trip and another post.
Can’t get enough of rainbow. It walks the walk which in part includes offering some of the best quality products available. The bulk section is unparalleled in terms of options and quality. The produce appears to be exclusively top notch and, folks who work there are knowledgeable about the products.Rainbow also has a wide variety of foods, many times available here before other mainstream places. The prices are competitive and the atmosphere, fun.
My happy place, so many bulk items, super fresh fruit and veggies, excellent cheese selection, V and GF items too.
Always has what I need and staff is always helpful...
Very nice shopping experience the customer service is absolutely excellent they carry everything you could ever want when it comes to food products....
Love this store. Shop from a place with integrity and feel guilt free
Everything that people who cook need and in bulk! Staples like dairy, butter, and eggs are very competitively priced especially Strauss Farms milk and even dog food, ( I and Love and You brand which is my poodles favorite) hard to find oil, specialty flours, and produce is all available. They take EBT and offer a Seniors discount for age 60 and above. The only store in town that plays T-Rex when Im shopping!
Rainbow groceries is where I enjoy shopping in bulk the most.
Loooooove this place! Organic, gluten free, vegan, no additives, dyes, or hard to pronounce words in any products on their shelves. Bulk herbs, dry goods, incense, aluminum free deodorant, non fluoridated toothpaste, vitamins, tinctures, tea, and on and on....
Their store always well-stocked and never lack stocks. The employees were very friendly and helpful, too. They had a very reasonable and fair price compared to other markets in the city. They have fresh veggies, fruits, and meat. The place is nice, too and well-organized. It was the best experience always!
I really enjoyed going to rainbow grocery. I found the herbs I needed in bulk so that I wouldnt have to pay Amazons inflated prices. Even caught something to make my own pills from the herbs I bought LOL!
First class store, health & great foods
Best bulk spices and seasonings in the Bay Area. Their loose leaf teas are outstanding as well.
A store that will provide you with all of the things you need and has a very entertaining team that will assist you. Excellent support!
I was quite surprised that this grocery store was able to provide everything I needed, particularly for certain dairy products, cheeses, cereals, and fresh products. In reality, this location is one of the best because not only do they have full goods, but the services are also fantastic. I can certainly provide them with the best possible reviews! Many thanks to you!
This place is like the large version of smaller organic cooperatives like Other Avenues. I prefer smaller organic stores but I come here to get items I cant find elsewhere.
Friendly help. Best quality throughout.
Wow! What a store! I came in for one thing but I wanted to shop for more so badly! What I did see amazed me! Organic and healthy!Great produce and bins and bins of flour, nuts and oats.I loved there make up counter. Although it should of been staffed on a Saturday! I did try a couple samples of lotion and serums on my hand. I would of made a purchase but, I didnt have time to wait for someone to come to the counter.I also loved the lotion dispensers. I will definitely be back to test them out!The wine selection wasnt so hot! I made a purchase of Pinot but wasnt impressed at all. I will stay away from their alcohol section.I will go back in search of speciality items. Definitely not your everyday grocery store with bargains. I love deals!
Easy to find what youre looking for. Not to crowded at 9am on Friday. Great selection.
Ludicrous prices means that they cannot possibly serve the whole community. Disgraceful.
What whole foods used to be. This place has hands down the best cheese selection in town.
Definitely one of my favorite Staples in the Bay area. Its only big co-op in the Bay area that is very much needed.
I enjoy loose teas and they have a nice collection of bulk loose teas you can get small portions of. This was my first time going and I could have spent an hour there easily just waking around all of their sections and looking at all that they offer. Clean, friendly staff, vast selection and great bulk sections (grains, flours, spices, oils, etc).
Amazing store! They have everything I could ask for and more (except chili crunch). It’s a one stop shop for me. Staff is usually very friendly. I love that they have items in bulk so I can do my best in limiting my impact on the environment. They also have so many incredible vegan options! Great selection of alcohol and beauty products. Just on point with the stuff they carry and what they stand for. Every city should have a store like this.
Need to teach these young spoiled privileged d bags who work here how to respect customers with kindness and decency
Excellent variety of healthy alternative food and beautiful produce. Nice bulk section also. Very friendly staff.
Its the best. I was in LA for 5 years and they had nothing like it so I appreciate it all the more now that Im back. Obviously its worker-owned and the prices are way below Whole Foods. The atmosphere and mood is all so much better.
Didnt visit during covid, because I enjoy buying open bin seasonings, dried fruits, pasta, rice and fresh olives. Will start back soon.
This store has everything I am always looking for. It should be called Super Grocery shop. From fresh produce to meats and fish. Also, they had a huge selection of cheese. The store is so big and spacious as well. This grocery shop is my go-to shop from now on. I love this place! Easy to find what you are looking for, and friendly assistance when required.
Absolutely the best grocery store ... pretty much everything is organic at somewhat reasonable prices ... also excellent service
This is the place where your zero waste experience begin. Everything is made to make this transition easy. Follow the steps below, satisfaction guaranteed! It ran the numbers, comparing $/lbs and it is either the same price or cheaper than anything you could find at Whole Foods (sometimes 50% cheaper), and 100% less wasteful.
Great selection of organic and sustainable stuff. They dont really sell meat. But worth a visit or 100. They really do have an eclectic selection that one could get used to.
Hands down my favorite grocery shop in the entire SF. Better than trader joes!
I like going in here because of their fresh veggies, fish, meats, and fruits. Their salad section was massive. They had all types of salad. This grocery shop spaciously cleaned and smells so good as well. The staves were very accommodating which I appreciated the most. It was so nice knowing this impressive grocery shop.
I feel like a kid in candy land coming here. Too and prices are insane. But, quality is fantastic.
Great assortment of bulk products tea herbs etc good beer and wine selection
Bypass TJs and WF and go directly to Rainbow. The market has every holistic remedy available. The best for organic locally sourced foods.
Fresh & organic products, awesome!
If you are looking for that hard to find ingredient for your cuisine or that hard to find vitamin this is your place.
Rainbow what can I say I get sent there to pick up some stuff for some people and let me just warn you when you walk in there and walk and see all these things it is like being out of the planet Earth and looking out into the universe cuz everything you see you going to want so be careful oh boy everything I see I want its a great place like the universe 😁😁😁👍👍🌎
Amazing selection of spices, teas, cheeses, and bread, pretty much anything vegetarian. Great bulk foods section as well.
Small but packed with a lot of stuff. Some of the staff are awesome where as a few followed me and my girlfriend around like we were stealing. I found it quite rude.
Call me a socialist if you want, but whenever a business is a worker owned co-op, I always have a better experience, always have more confidence, and know I’m getting what I’m paying for. No different with Rainbow grocery. Great selections. And just about any supplement available on line you can get at rainbow. They have huge section for supplements with multiple aisles. One thing though they don’t have is a butcher. No meat.
RE: Late Hour Openings during the Winter Holidays...wow. Rainbow Grocery is offering a special opportunity for late night shopping during the Christmas holiday, must sign up for a spot! This is a crock of you know what: we bit for the Thanksgiving sign-up only to discover that SHELVES WERE EMPTY...not even the staples (sandwich bread, ice cream, popular herb packets, lettuces etc etc). Stay away if you can!Guess they are trying to move the buyers mistakes.
It was okay. Good, bad, uglyGood:2/3 people I felt with here happy to help. The 3rd sounded like I was nothing him.Theres tons of random sppliments and health stuff. Lots of bulk items. From spices to coco and dried fruit.Bad:They dont have normal things. Like adult size coffee creamer. Or figs. Its a very health food store. So if your not looking for health food thing, you wont find it here. You will find the worse health knock offUgly. The entrance, exit and parking. The parking lot is very very small. Im guessing 20ish cars. The entrance is really small and kinda hidden behind these street cones. The exit is small and has a right turn directly after it. So you have to watch out for that.
Good customer service starts with the employees. It is so important that employees are friendly as well as professional and knowledgeable. I’m amazed by this supermarket that has staff that looks active and interested. It’s such a good reflection of the business.
I could die happy in this store. It has so much variety that could induce a migraine just looking at all the locally & organically-sourced, health & ethically-conscious products and practices they employ here. Theres also some really weird products you never knew you needed, like plastic bag hangers, because why not?
Always a great experience. Absolutely love the bulk herbs and spices section.
Rainbow is a gem honestly. I dont really like the major chain health food stores they give me anxiety. Rainbow is big enough, yet small and quaint with all the supplements/tinctures I need.
Awesome Co-OP groceries, all natural food ( great vegetarian foods ) and fun little knick-knack area.
Seems it has improved allot. Staff was very accomodating, pretty wide selection of all sorts and reasonable priices. Way better than Whole Foods
I need to live in this place. Huge variety of health foods and products. Staff has been extremely helpful and going out of their way to make me want to come back.
I don’t like single use plastics and this store was full of faux rich hippies buying mountains of expensive stuff in single use plastics. They had some great alternatives which are also found in safeway and other cheaper markets. But this place didn’t carry the earth friendly products I would have expected (powdered shampoo, toothpaste, and mouthwash). Cheeses only wrapped in Saran Wrap. Chocolates only in plastic. yogurt is in plastic for $8 or it’s $10 for glass. Should be the other way around. A real coop would support an SF maker of yogurt, etc. We should get back to being those smart and earth conscious SF world leaders that we once were...Instead of plastic junkies.
