My vehicle was making noise when I accelerated. I searched for a muffler shop that I could trust without excessive cost. I called at Mr. Muffler in Royal Oak, MI at 4pm and talked to Mike the manager. I explained to him what my SUV was doing, he said can you be here by 5pm. I arrived at 4:50pm he showed me where the noise was coming from. I was expecting him to schedule an appointment because they close at 6pm but to my surprise, Mike said we can fix it today for you. They had finished the work on my vehicle by 6pm. I was sooo happy and grateful for the excellent service and their honesty. I recommend anyone to give this place a try, there great.

They let me drive away with a pipe dragging on the ground. Ryan agreed it wasnt like that when I brought it but these things happen as he put it. I was going to do a patch job myself as it was too expensive for me to fix right now. I had to go home and get things but the woman at the front desk said I cannot leave the car there and they will put it back like when I brought it in. Why didnt Ryan offer that? I guess they do not need my business. They are very busy anyway.

Exceptional service, even during a pandemic!My car started overheating and smoking while I was driving to work. Luckily, I was right next to this shop so I pulled in. Due to Covid, they had preventative measures in place, so I couldn’t go in, but when I called, the person I spoke to gave me clear direction on the “key drop” procedure and let me know that someone would contact me. I wasn’t expecting to hear anything for a few days, since I figured they were backed up and short staffed, but I got a call with a reasonable quote within a couple of hours. Of course, I expected to be without a car for quite some time and for some new issues to “pop up”. I got a call two days later (wayyyyy faster than I expected) saying that my car was ready to be picked up, they didn’t feel there were additional issues that needed to be addressed and that the price didn’t go up from what I was Initially quoted. I definitely appreciate the timeliness and honesty! Totally recommend this place and will be doing business with them in the future.

My coworker suggested this place to me. He said he goes here all the time. I took my car in yesterday to have the serpintine belt replaced and plug a tire...Ryan called to let me know it was ready and said he just had a gut feeling to take it out and test drive it..(I was complaining about it sounding funny).. they found my bearings going on the driver side! I dont trust repair shops easily because of past experiences but these people are on top of their job!!! They saved me from getting stranded and I am so thankful that they were thorough. Have taken several of our cars here over the past few years. Ive always had great service from Ryan and his team. On occasion, I have used other service providers to work on my cars and have found the diagnosis accurate and cost to repair at SM&B is at or below the market rate for non-dealer service work. Turnaround times are reasonable and the front end of the business has always been friendly and professional. I will continue to bring my repair work to them and have recommended them to family and friends.

My usual shop was too busy to see my car quickly, so they suggested I contact Southfield Muffler and Brake. They were excellent! Very quick, didnt try to do anything more than I needed, and a great price. I will definitely return.

I brought my son’s G3 in for a grinding noise and they were able to diagnose it as a brake issue and turn it around in less than a day! Customer service was fantastic and the cost was reasonable.

My family, co workers, and myself have been taking our cars here for years. The staff is extremely knowledgeable and friendly. The repair work that has been done on my car has been solid and the best price around. Ryan explains all problems found with the car and tells you what needs to be fixed and what can wait. Had some exhaust work done, dropped the car off at 6, got a call with a diagnosis early in the morning with knowledgeable input that really shows these guys know what theyre talking about. They gave me a quote right then, and by a few hours later the job was done. No hassle or anything unexpected with price when I went to pick it up. Very busy shop and almost walked out because, based on the ever increasing loudness, I needed exhaust work done fast. 2005 Mazda MPV, not a common vehicle. Had quotes from a former Mazda dealer, and a Midas guy who ultimately had difficulty getting aftermarket parts. But both of these were for almost full systems with standard parts. Southfield M&B was able to replace exhaust pipe and two flex pipes while substituting welds for myriad rusted flanges and welding a broken muffler hook. Id never do this with a car in warranty but this car is nine years old with 120,000 miles. What most impressed me was the way Ryan the manager proposed the absolute cheapest solution to get by and then the next level for more money. I did the next level because I dont like to spend my life dropping off cars for repair but I appreciate the budget minded attitude. For 1/4 the cost of the full system replacements I have a quiet van. I also appreciate his getting to my van so I could make a noon meeting. But next time Ill happily wait for this kind of quality service and great pricing.

80 just to look at my car and NONE of it goes to fixing it. I used to really like this place but the last 2 visits where less than satisfactorily.

I took my car here to fix an exhaust problem, have an alignment and tires rotated, and had new headlight bulbs put in. In all honesty, this was such a great experience! I was dreading having my car fixed as I needed to find a new mechanic and it’s hard finding one that I can trust. The whole experience was great, I had expected to pay a lot for the exhaust repair I needed. And when it came time to pay my OTD price was a lot lower than what I had expected! And not only that, Ryan was really quick to give me a call and give me updates on what my car needed and to make sure what I wanted done. They got my car finished in 2 days when most places take about a week. When I came in to pick up my vehicle one of the employees even pulled it up front to the door for me.Great experience from beginning to end. I will be back when I need my next repair and I will refer anyone I can to them!

Came in around 7 a.m. with brakes grinding badly and was worried about high cost of repair. Southfield Muffler and Brake had my pads and rotors fixed before noon for about half as much as was estimated at other places. Brakes now feel great and was very satisfied with speed and price of service. Will definitely use them again!

We take both our cars here and have for a number of years - we used to go to the dealerships but have found these guys to be just as reliable and effective and cheaper. they work with you and try and find the best solution to the problem. I found the one negative review to be suspect / unbelievable, and I personally give it no credibility whatsoever, so dont worry about that one.

Unexpectedly great experience here. Had a problem with my exhaust that had my car sounding like an unmuffled race car. Wanted it fixed quickly. Called in and they were open and working before their published open hours. Was told I could bring it in right away. When I got there, they were already busy. Cork-board on the wall with MANY notes, letters, and cards of thanks. They had my car in the shop in minutes, an explanation and quote minutes later (several options, but they recommended the cheapest), and an estimate for a 30 minute fix. I was back on the road, repair complete, about 27 minutes after Id rolled in. Really really really good experience.

Questionable diagnosis quotes and prices - WOULD NOT RECOMMENDI thought maybe this was only a one time problem but after many time going to them Ive found their diagnosis are many times misleading and wrong. Example:Took my car in for a simple oil leak, but after that was fixed, I was told by Ryan (the manager) my engine would fry up if I didnt have the radiator replaced and would cost almost $1000! After taking to a different shop nearby I discovered the radiator merely needed to get flushed and would cost $120 tops.Example 2:Took in my car for a engine checkup. Ryan said that the engine was in horrible condition and would need to get totally replaced or it would break down, (this costing thousands of dollars). I then took my car into a shop nearby and after paying them a little over $100 to replace my timing belt, the car ran like new.Ryan has shown over time his quotes on my car are very questionable and misleading and because of this I WOULD NOT RECOMMEND.

Quick service and friendly staff

On 7/5/17, I took my fathers 1991 Chrysler LeBaron to Southfield Muffler and Brake. Upon contacting us, Ryans wife mentioned that it was likely a key issue and that the original key would no longer activate the ignition.She then asked us if we had an alternate key, which we did. When I had arrived, they said Chuck had installed an ignition cylinder, then they labeled my dads keys individually with one for the door and the trunk and the second key was labeled as the ignition. They charged us $271.20 when all we needed was the second key! Then in early October 2017, I had brought my own car, a 2001 Ford Taurus SES to have the brake fluid replenished and the brakes themselves checked for any significant problems. Ryans wife then had (Mike) to check both issues. Mike had told me that I had a brake leak and that the car is unsafe to drive and had asked me if I could leave the care with them. I had the entire day to attend to the car and when I replied that waiting for much of the day would not be an issue, Ryans wife suddenly took an attitude and voiced in a noticeable tone of displeasure that she was not going to stress herself out over having me wait as long as needed to have the car serviced. I was well aware that there would be a long wait though it did not matter to me. I have noticed other people waiting in the office for hours on past occasions but for whatever reason she copped a really bad attitude! Her surly response, along with the fact that I was being mislead to believe that I had an oil leak, when in fact, there was no noticeable puddles of oil in my driveway prior to bringing the car to the shop. I immediately brought the car to Suburban Ford in Ferndale to have the issue resolved and all that needed to be done was the master cylinder to be replenished with brake fluid. This final experience confirmed what I had long suspected that Ryan and his wife will do and say anything to fleece the public out of their hard-earned money! I strongly advise anyone who resides within the surrounding area to AVOID AT ALL COSTS doing business with this establishment and have their vehicle serviced by either the respective dealer or by another honest auto-repair shop. This place is nowhere close to being the highly respected auto repair business as it was when Ernie was the owner.

I had one 5* visit and one 1* visit. The first visit they were able to perform a quick repair on leaking exhaust. Another shop wanted to replace the whole thing. Major $ savings.On another visit I had some brake work done, afterwards Id get a high pitched squeal after driving for awhile. Brought it in 3-4 times they didnt know what was happening. Brought to my dealership who diagnosed it right away - stuck caliper that they just repaired.

This place has gone way up in prices. I liked it better when Erney ran the place.

My family used to have all our vehicles maintained here and until a few years ago I had no complains. Ever since Ryan took over they have repeatedly dropped the ball, they messed up the level sender doing a fuel pump on my grandparents Taurus, charged me for oem upper control arms and actually only installed one dorman and pressed the ball joint in the other side. Destroyed an abs sensor trying to replace my parking brake, and after replacing my power steering rack failed to use the right fluid, the reman failed 600 miles away a year later. Left a brake line finger tight on my girlfriends car after doing a wheel bearing! Oh and got quoted 1200$ to weld in a universal catalytic converter. Dangerous incompetence, poor pricing. Go almost anywhere else Southfield mufflers not the shop it was when Ernie was still involved day to day.

I had my car towed here yesterday to have it looked at. I agreed to pay $86, being told that I would only be charged if the owner had to spend an hour or more diagnosing the issue. He called back to tell me the computer was fried and wanted $500 to replace the computer before further diagnosing any issues. I asked to have it towed back to my home as I dont believe replacing the computer is worth $500 - Ryan still charged $86 for diagnosing the computer issue (he didnt have to dig under the hood or take it for a drive to tell me that). After getting the car back today, and googling car computers and other fixes for the issue, my boyfriend was directed to the fuse box, where he noticed and changed a bad fuse. Now it runs, just as it had!!! Two tow rides and $86 later, I think Ryan is a crook and only aims to take your money. The $500 computer quote alone was outrageous, and his refusal to refund the $86 misleading diagnosis adds to the disappointing experience.I would not recommend Southfield Muffler and Brake.

Bottom line: $75 for 15 minutes of shoddy work by a disgruntled employee. Thats more than enough to ensure I dont come back.The full story: After reading great reviews on Southfield Muffler and Brake, I took my truck in to have welds run to fix two minuscule leaks that were bothering me - an easy in-and-out job. The $30 initial quote turned to $75 due to Chucks lack of ability to close a seam less than 1mm wide. After 15 minutes of work, I asked to review the welds, only to find that it still had a leak. I pointed it out to Chuck, who rolled his eyes at me and angrily said that he would finish the job and pull the truck out front (he didnt give me an opportunity to review the finished product). After getting the truck home and thoroughly reviewing the job, I found out that he botched my setup by bending the ends of the pipe he welded in and restricting my 3 setup from the y-pipe back.Ryan (the manager) sounded pleasant and helpful over the phone when I initially called. Maybe I should have asked him to do the work...
