From the initial search for a Discover Scuba class for my son to the actual class it has been an amazing experience with Calypso. In the first phone call we knew we had chosen wisely as the person on the phone was incredibly informative and helpful. We then scheduled our class via the website which was super easy. We met with Dan, Doug and Charlie at 6pm and immediately felt we were in safe and smart hands. The theory in the classroom was great and my son (at 10 years old) kept this focus. We then shifted to the in house pool and the practical element started. My son has not stopped talking about this experience yet and think it will be a while before he stops. We will be back for the open water certification and I will take some of the other classes too such as buoyancy control and a refresher course. A huge thank you to Charlie as my sons instructor who, for sure, made my son feel very at ease and confident in his ability to breathe under water!!! A thank you to Doug too for allowing me to get in the pool with scuba and his tips and tricks helped me too. Choose wisely, choose Calypso!!! Thanks all
My dad and I got open water certified with Dan Capobianco at Calypso! He is an excellent instructor with lots of knowledge, patience, and tolerance! I felt safe + comfortable with Dan!The entire staff at Calypso is extremely knowledgeable and helpful. They truly want to share the beautiful experience of diving with all of their clients while informing them of all the safety precautions. Highly recommend!!
Calypso divers is a landmark establishment in the Tampa region for quality dive shops. Even under the newest management and ownership the legacy of quality service continues. If you need anything dont hesitate to ask for Larry or Laura and the rest of the crew make sure that everything is done properly and that you are kitted out as you want.
Spend your money somewhere else they care about you. This place is a joke. They took our money for a re-cert lesson & we had to chase them every step of the way. I had to call them three weeks after our money was taken b/c our checkout dive was one week away & we have yet to receive our online study material. Then post dive, after waiting a month & not receiving our PADI cards we call them & find out they forgot to send in our paperwork. Now we are going to Hawaii without fresh cert. cards. Will not do business here again!
The experience with Discover Dive was amazing and so incredible to learn with such thorough, caring and safe instructors, Melody and Charlie. I would recommend them to anyone who has never tried scuba diving before. We felt safe and so proud of ourselves after diving for the first time ever at this awesome place! Great environment and THANK YOU! We look forward to continuing to explore scuba diving :)
Had a great experience with Rob. Very professional, knowledgeable and a sharp Witt that made diving with guys fun. Looking forward to continuing my dive journey with you guys!
Last week, my daughter and I completed Open Water Diver certification with Dan Capobianco.Dan was a consummate professional and all-around great guy throughout our course. He is knowledgeable about all things SCUBA. Dan is very warm and personable and clearly articulates procedures and techniques required for safe and enjoyable diving. He is very patient and can explain in simple terms what may appear to be difficult at first. Dan’s attention to detail and gentle spirit sets the tone for an excellent learning environment. A five-star rating isn’t quite high enough praise for Dan Capobianco. We will always enjoy fond memories of our OW Diver experience and look forward to many more adventures with Dan and Calypso Divers of Tampa Bay.
Rob Brand was the dive instructor for my two grandsons, ages 12 and 13, this week and was great. Rob took the time to fully explain the skills to the boys and was very patient with them. He made the class fun and they really enjoyed the class. The scuba gear used in the class was new Aqualung gear some of the best gear available. I highly recommend Caylpso dive shop for any classes needed and Rob Brand as an instructor.
This place is beautiful, clean, well organized. They had the part I needed. The associate Daniel fixed my mask. Took about 5 minutes. Calypso is right off I75. They also have the pool and classes I need to learn scuba. Altogether a very satisfying experience you cant go wrong here.
I got my original certification here then got my renewal here. My son and I both felt they were so good at training and renewing both of us. Due to their great instruction for us we got to dive in Australia and Belize. We really appreciated their wonderful trainers who made sure Id be a good and safe diver.
Thanks to Rob for his patience and encouragement now I have my Open Water Dive certification.
I took my Advanced open water course here with Robert Brand back in march, as some tours in the keys require your AOW. I did not deal with the shop too much but met Robert at lake Denton for day one and was only student taking the class so it was pretty much one on one. Day two we went to the Hudson Grotto, which was very eerie, the water was cold and dark. Very interesting dive though, and the only place in the area that qualifies for AOW, and if you can dive here it is fair to say that you dive any other recreational site. I watch a lot of dive videos and have read a few books, so I knew most of the information but it was great to practice with a professional and receive constructive criticisms (in a good way) and feedback on what Im good at vs what I should work on. and we worked on some of the things that I needed too, like underwater navigation along with a few smaller things. Overall I felt like I got my moneys worth.
Calypso Divers got us scheduled and dry suit certified on a last minute schedule so we could do some diving in Iceland. I called all over the Tampa/Sarasota/Ft Myers area and had a hell of a time finding a dive shop that both 1.) Had dry suit certification class and 2.) Had dry suits to rent. We were able to do the training with Rob (who was great) out at Lake Denton. Would absolutely reach out to this dive shop for future courses.
My wife and I were certified divers a long time ago. Enough time had passed where the most sensible course of action was to certify again. Our experience at Calypso Divers of Tampa Bay was excellent in every regard. Larry and Laura (owners/operators) were nothing but helpful and completely knowlegeable. Dan (one of the instructors) was equally awesome. I watched the staff work with every conceivable group - from children to divers getting the first certification and veterans getting more senior qualifications. The instruction was fine-tuned to each groups needs and abilities. An indoor pool makes for a great place to initially demonstrate diving skills and the open water dives were just what was needed. No question was too odd and everyone was made to feel welcome. There was never a hard sell in the shop and no one reached for the most expensive item on the shelf when another piece of gear would have been better. Whether youre just getting a tank filled or getting the family certified, Id Calypso divers getw two thumbs up and my most positive recommendation.
Rob was great! I did my nitrox cert with him. I did the PADI e-learning followed by an in person review and test. Rob did a great job demonstrating how to find the oxygen levels and work a dive computer. Very proficient. Would recommend.
Great shop, wonderful owners and fabulous instructor.I’ve received multiple certifications from Calypso and couldn’t be happier with my experience. Laura and Larry the owners are always so pleasant and accommodating, beyond kind.I’ve had the same instructor from open water, advanced and rescue. Dan Capobianco, is highly recommended. In my first certification there was also a 16yo girl who he was so patient with while also instructing faster advancing divers. He’s wonderful with all ages, wity, great guide, I’ve always felt extremely safe and well taught. He is very easy to talk to, not intimidating and beyond willing to go the extra mile to explain anything. So thankful for the owners, Dan and other members of the dive community I’ve been able to connect with!
First, I want to thank the owners, Larry and Laura, for their genuine understanding and subsequent assistance in working within our time constraints to get my 12 and 13 year old granddaughters Open Water certified and my son re-certified. Their flexibility and patience are truly appreciated. We also want to give special thanks and recognition to Dan Capobianco for being such a GREAT INSTRUCTOR. He was very effective in teaching us the skills we need and instilling confidence in us to use them properly. He mixes his knowledge and diving skills with just the right amount of humor and empathy. He made the experience way better than we originally expected.
Our instructor was Dan and he was amazing. If you ever thought about diving and may have apprehensions Calypso and their instructors will do it right with you. No pressure, supportive, flexible and extremely friendly. There may be apprehension like we had about the fear of diving or it may seem too complicated. Dan was able to put everything in such a way that there was instant trust. You want me to do what? Take my regulator out of my mouth under water. Yes and we will take our time or stop when your not feeling it. You want me to clear a mask with water in it, youre crazy. Not with Dan. Take your time and we will only go as fas as you feel comfortable. No matter where your at in Florida Calypso dive center is the place to get your training.
Super friendly! Helped me with everything I needed even though I came in super late and even gave me a discount! I will definitely be back!
Dry Suit Certification with Rob was a great experience. Knowledgeable, professional, great sense of humor, and very safety conscious.
Calypso is our go to dive shop! Started our dive journey with them more than 6 years ago with Open Water certification with Ilsia. Since then we have added Advanced Open Water, Enriched Air, Drift Diver and most recently, Drysuit Diver last month with Rob Brand as our instructor. As always, Rob and the rest of the Calypso staff were professional and courteous. Rob was meticulous about safety and completing all of the competencies and yet we managed to have a great time! Calypso sold us and services all of our gear and they have never disappointed us with their outstanding customer service. I highly recommend Rob and Ilsia for your diving instruction for the whole family.
Fantastic experience getting my Open Water Diver certification. When you enroll here (because you have to, theres no better place) be sure to ask for Dan Capobiancos class. Hes patient and knowledgeable, and makes the class thoroughly enjoyable. I look forward to more certifications and dives!
We have purchased a few items here over the years and I return for maintenance when required. Their fills are always full and prices reasonable. The staff are usually really good, very helpful and pleasant. the other day I spent about 20 minutes of one of their employees time looking at a dive computer that I ultimately did not buy because I just couldnt make it work for me. She was a joy to deal with and I wanted to buy the computer just because of her.
I’m a new diver, I’m 52 years old, I always wanted to learn how to dive, I signed up with Calypso and I was assigned Edward Zellem as my dive instructor. Tomorrow is my final class, this instructor was the best I could have ever ask for, he is very by the book and truly cares about my leaning and respecting the water. The staff have been the best, very knowledgeable and eager to help in any way possible, I’m sure there are many diving schools that treat new divers with great respect, but this place is my new diving home. Thanks Ed, you are spot on and I would love to keep diving with you.
I have so many good things to say about Calypso dive shop and specifically Larry and Rob! I was completing my open water certification at a different shop and needed to change locations for a few reasons including completing my open dives within a certain (very short ) time frame. Larry answered the phone before the dive shop was even open and he accommodated me *that day* in helping me finish my dives- this is during a time when most people are scheduling private dive training due to covid, so needless to say he has been busy. It was great to be trained and certified by someone with a lot of dive experience and truly looking out for my well being as a diver. Rob went over my Shearwater dive computer with me and showed me which settings I need to change to dive safely. They made me feel comfortable and safe. They are also very professional. Calypso will be my dive shop for all future needs and I would highly recommend them for any dive courses. I look forward to doing my future training with them!!
I did a private SCUBA certification with Rob. He was a great instructor. He helped with equipment purchase. His insight on why certain tasks and techniques were practiced and how they would correlate to real world issues. We were able to go to Hudson Grotto for training and it was a great experience. Would highly recommend them for SCUBA training.
Amazing experience! Right from the get go the owners Larry and Laura took great care of my kids and I. They were so welcoming and knowledgeable. They provided us with all of the tools that we needed to begin this new adventure. They realized that I have a large family and it would be expensive for me, so instead of pushing unnecessary equipment on me, they showed me the essentials and told me to upgrade later if we catch the bug. They didnt try to upsell me on a single item!!! We were then introduced to one of the best dive instructors in their facility... Dan Capobianco! Dan was so patient with us and took his time to make sure we understood everything in great detail. He took us out to Lake Denton and Rainbow River for our open water dive lessons. In fact my youngest daughter Siya couldnt equalize her ears the first time we went out there but instead of getting upset with her or us, he took out a second weekend out of his life and dedicated it to my family. I cant thank Dan enough for being such an amazing teacher and such a big hearted human being. I would HIGHLY recommend this facility to everyone!
The staff at Calypso are amazing and helpful. I was certified long ago but never purchased my own gear. Bought Aqualung gear a few months ago and was impressed with the staff knowledge and advice. They did not try to oversell me, they instead asked me many important questions about my diving experience and how often I dive in the past and how often I plan to dive in future and based their recommendations off of that instead of the high $ items. Ed was extremely helpful and patient in this process. I also signed up for my Advanced Open Water class with Rob and the experience was excellent. Great instructor who cares about his students far past the few hours of the actual dives. He has helped me out with gear decisions, cleaning advice, and really advanced my skills in the water while making it fun at the same time. He is knowledgeable and extremely helpful. Would highly recommend Calypso and their classes to others. Very impressed. Their shop is 30 minutes from my house but I make the drive for them.
We went with our three children to get swim lessons. From the second we came in, we were met with unhelpful staff who said that was totally separate even though they advertise it on the side of their building and on their website (which is where we got the swim instructors number). When we tried the number again, the person said they forgot! When I asked the man who was just staring at us if there was another person we could schedule with, he quickly was like no, we dont offer anything g or handle any scheduling. To top it off, while he wouldnt move the while time from his chair, he jumped up to tell my son a scuba mask wasnt a toy...which my husband and I were standing right there as he looked at it and we had told him we needed to put it up. Completely rude staff and unwilling to help. Definitely lost a lot of customers with our family.
So I rarely leave reviews so the fact that I’m leaving one means they did above and beyond. Tomorrow is my last dive for my open water certification. I’m a 23-year-old paramedic during a time where my schedule changes daily due to covid-19. I always made sure I tested myself in plenty of time before the classes to present my negative results for the safety of my fellow classmates! But what I wasn’t expecting was the amazing accommodations calypso did. Allowing me to pick up my gear early because of medical deployments. As well as my instructor (Lisa) allowing me to do some of the return class work at the dive site (such as learning how to fill out the after dive dive logs) so that I can quickly travel back up to New York were im needed most. As a medical professional the steps at this facility taken never made me feel like they put anybody at risk both underwater and above water. I look forward to building my scuba diving kit here at calypso and maybe one day being a instructor! I WOULDN’T GO ANYWHERE ELSE WHEN IT COMES TO YOUR DIVING NEEDS. Not to mention three of my close friends are registering for classes here because of me sharing my experience with them.
Stopped by there today to checkout spearguns and and some masks. The gentleman behind the counter was really rude to us and offered very little assistance. I took my business to Scuba Haven where I felt welcomed
Just received my Open Water cert today with Ed (one of their awesome instructors!). I have to say these guys got it down. Very detailed, very thorough and mostly very safety oriented! Knowledgeable staff who dont try to sell you equipment you dont need - they educate you! Thank you Ed, Ed, Marge and Dan! You guys are true professionals. Cant wait to venture on a dive with you in the future. Anyone looking to get certified or refresh or certify for advance, wreck or cave diving, Calypso should be your choice!
My husband and I took the open water course with Charlie and he was fantastic! Very detailed, patient and friendly! Highly recommended!!!
My kids and I go to this location, Mr. Lee’s team very professional, knowledgeable, and courteous. I recommend this place for everyone; children and adults like(myself).
We scheduled swim lessons for 3 of my grandchildren with Olena... she forgot about the appointment. Not to mention, the men in the store were not helpful, rude and nasty. Not a nice look or word was spoken by he elder man. We could not wait to get out of that place, totally bad vibes!
Awesome service, from the dice shop to cert classes to outings!!
Great dive shop stands behind there work. Super friendly and helpful staff. Thank you calypso.
If you are looking to learn to Scuba Dive, this is the place. Friendly, knowledgeable staff teach you to do it right using PADI instruction. I’m now Advanced Open Water certified with and Enriched Air specialty. 10 dives completed with more on the schedule.
Ive dealt with a lot of dive shops and dive instructors, but none better than Larry and the people at Calypso. They are pros, and you know it from the first interaction. Could not recommend more highly.
Very experienced swim teachers who are great with kids. My daughter has been taking lessons for the past 2 years. Started in the intermediate level and now in the Swim club.
I have taken several certification classes from Calypso and I highly recommend this dive shop. They have a great team of instructors and competitive prices on classes and gear. The best part is they own a 10ft deep indoor pool for scuba classes.
My wife had an amazing experience getting certified with Calypso!! She had attempted a couple of years ago but was not able to complete the necessary dives which left her very fearful. Thank you to Rob for helping her overcome her fears and be able to achieve a lifelong dream!!! Thank you again to an amazing team of people.
Came in on a Saturday, the dive shop tech was on the sales floor and definitely wasnt a salesman. He was awesome though and tried very hard. I ended up purchased everything from him and will be back.
I did my PADI Open Water Diver training here. The staff is great! Never once have I had a problem. So much so, that I have recently returned to purchase a full set of gear. I had an exhausting amount of questions and everyone there took their time answering every one of them. They let me try on multiple different sizes and models, never attempted to push me toward something that was overly expensive or unnecessary. I literally trust these guys with my life! Keep it up Calypso!!
This place is amazing. Extremely reasonable rental rates and their staff (especially Rob) really know their stuff.
I went here to get my 45/4500 Ninja paintball tank to get re-hydro. It was about $15 less than going to wicked sports. The employees at wicked sports had told me that Calypso is some times rough on taking off the regs from the tanks and I was okay with that. But when I got the tank back from hydro (1.5 months later) it was ridiculous. The adhesive they use to put the hydro stamp on the tanks was smeared down the whole side of the tank. 2 quarter inch chunks were found on the tank that were not there before. This is a quality bottle. What ever diving tank that is the highest quality you guys use for diving this is it for paintball and It’s crazy they allowed this to happen. It was obvious the tank had been hit or dropped considering the two chucks out of the top layer of the tank. Not to mention the adhesive, but even more crazy is why the adhesive got smeared all over the tank. There are TWO stamps on this tank now (it would have been the first hydro after factory) because the guy at the hydro placed messed up and put the wrong date in the year and month on the first stamp and per DOT they cannot take off any stamps so they left it on there and I guess said well it let me coat this in adhesive and throw on the correct one. The guy who helped me I believe his name was Ed I’m not sure on that told me that is what probably happened. I asked well is there any way I could get a discount or refund on the hydro. This is an old and nice tank and now it’s destroyed. They ignored my request. Or didn’t even act on trying to bring up a discount for the damage done to the tank I get it they send it off to a hydro guy but what if this happened to a scuba tank? You guys really are letting tanks come back from your hydro guy like this? Really? I know why they did not care it’s because it’s a paintball tank and they probably would assume I’m not going to be a returning customer. But what if I say I run a team with 25 guys who play paintball and who all need tank hydros within the next 3 months? Customer service isn’t selective. If there is a way to upload pictures I will
Each time Ive needed or wanted something they had it. They take time to educate you on options. Great shop
PISS POOR CUSTOMER SERVICE! My family and I entered the store around 1:00 pm on August 11th 2018. We entered behind another family. We were in the store about 45 minuets looking for what we wanted to buy. We, nor any of the other customers were ever greeted or even acknowledged by the sole employee. The employee sat at a desk only paying attention to his tablet. He looked up and made eye contact with us only once the entire time. The look we were given made us feel like we were an inconvenience. So, we left and spent $4,631.98 at another dive shop. So glade we did - WOODS & WATER OUTDOOR SPORTS CENTER was fabulous and made us feel like family.
Did a bubblelmaker party for my 11 year olds birthday with Alysia and Thomas as instructors. They were amazing! Alysia and Thomas were wonderful with the kids. The experience for the kids was great, and the shops service was fantastic. My wife and I are both divers and spent some time talking to the staff about their offerings, and will certainly be returning for our own needs.
Rather rude and condescending staff. Do yourself a favor, spend your money elsewhere.
Did my open water training with these guys. Instructors were knowledgeable, patient, and made the entire experience relaxing and enjoyable.
I went there to buy some new flippers and booties and I am now an amputee I lost my lower left leg and they were very helpful in helping me set up my swim leg with the fins I needed in the booties to make it all work very knowledgeable that all their products and services and gave me the best deal for the cheapest price and they do offer a military discount so if youre in the military you should have mentioned that and theyre very friendly and very knowledgeable and they will make sure you wont walk out without having what you need.
Ive been diving for a few years now and recently decided to continue my education and make a run at Master Diver. As it is near my house I went to Calypso to find out what they had to offer me. I met Rob Brand and it seemed he knew what I wanted to do before I told him anything. I mentioned wreck diving in Grand Cayman and he knew I had been on the Doc Paulsen and the Kittiwake. I said I wanted a dry suit cert and he somehow knew that the tectonic plate dive in Silfra Iceland was on my bucket list. We got along really well and he put me at ease that I was in the right place. So I signed up for the Advanced Open Water class. Last weekend I went diving with Rob and was able to get this cert taken care of and started working on my 5 specialties required for Master. It is obvious that Rob is very knowledgeable and experienced as a diver. He does a great job of passing that knowledge on as an instructor. Not only did he help me further my education (and help fix some of the bad habits previous instructors let me develop) but he made sure I had fun while doing it. Yesterday I went back to finally purchase gear and he helped me, making sure to guide me to the proper equipment based on my needs and future diving plans. I also signed up for a few more specialty classes as well. I look forward to diving with him again and again as I progress to Master and beyond. Thank you Rob.While I dont know the rest of the staff as well as I know him, I can say that everyone else I have met has been helpful, knowledgeable and friendly as well.
Came in and the staff was extremely helpful and got me going in the right direction. Very clean up to date shop which is a nice change from other places!
Nice. Friendly and helpful
Went to calypso to get apeks regs serviced to find out on vacation that HP hose is leaking. When I first picked up the regs I asked to hook it up to a tank to see, for I’m a MSDT and know the rigamarole of getting your gear “serviced”, and as soon as I asked the clerk he said “What you don’t trust us...?”. No sir..... I don’t. Now that the tank was hooked up to my reg, and not in water, I was unable to find or hear the leak until I was under the surface. Not only did they rip me off and were lazy to not replace o-rings, they risked my life by being that lazy. Now they want me to bring it in to see for themselves, as if the first time wasn’t enough, and verbatim “If we said it was serviced, it was serviced”.
Great friendly owners and staff
Ive had my equipment, BCD & Regulator, serviced at Calypso for 3+ years and have found the Staff and Service Technicians tobe reliable, knowledgeable, and courteous. Its your life, trust them, I do, thank you Calypso.
Completely unprofessional and rude
Professional courteous knowledgeable staff
Had what we were looking for. But check the prices charged versus prices advertised.
Horrible experience they charged my credit card Doble and I still fighting 3 weeks later for my money
Really nice staff
Just moved from Michigan and was looking for a new dive center. Walked in and looked around. Found staff to be unwelcoming and unfriendly. :(
Overall horrible experience in dive school .
