This is my new favorite restaurant in Walnut Creek! Refreshingly unique in the area and stands right alongside Cinderella Bakery in SF. Incredible food, really friend staff, strong dessert game. Chicken Kiev, dumplings, and piroskis were some of the best Ive had. Cool ambience, well lit space with chandeliers and Eastern European decorations. Great drinks selection too: Hungarian wines, Czech and Polish beers, Russian vodka, etc. Will absolutely be returning, highly recommend!

We went there I believe on Christmas day, and returned on January 15 to try the deli. We started with chicken liver pate spread on toasted brioche. Th pate is extremely smooth and creamy, one of the best I tasted, even if slightly sweet. I bought more during our trip to the deli, and will try the goose pate later. At the start of our dinner, I ordered a Fairytale Blossom cocktail, smooth Russian vodka, shaved ice and elderflower which was smooth with delicate flavors. I tend to dislike cocktails in general as tastes and sweetness tend to be overpowering but this is exceptional. I had in mind to order chicken Kyiv but changed it to Pelmeni, mine with beef and pork with a brothy sauce drizzled over them and surrounded by sour cream garnished with sprouts. Warm dumplings and cool cream. A very interesting combination of flavors and textures which, taken in combination with the Fairytale Blossom, bring up thoughts of wintry hikes. My wife had the rack of lamb, ordered medium rare.It is lightly seared and fatty bits were removed by the Chef. I have had poor experiences with lamb meat in the past, but this tasted great, the meat almost melting in your mouth.I also tried an Estonian beer which proved very satisfying, with light fruit tones but not sweet. The service is prompt and attentive and thankfully knowledgeable as I was unfamiliar with much of the menu. As for the food, Babushka is blessed with a Chef with a capital C.

1st time eating Russian food and it was soooooo good! I highly recommend this place and they have excellent service!! They give you a starter which is the shot glass- pureed potato soup with whipped sour cream and garnish- that was heavenly! For my appetizer we ordered chicken pate and Kahchapuri- my favorite on the menu!- The entree I got Perlini ( I apologize if I botched that..) its a pork and beef dumplings with whipped sour cream, delicious!! Dessert was lemon sorbet, sooo good! Five out of five stars!!! Excellent!! The alcohol beverage I believe was called Babushka my Love really good. Its a sweet drink. The soup is the Borscht- also really good! Highly recommend this place! Cant say it enough!

Incredibly tasty and comforting food. First time here and everything was delicious. We started with the toasted rye bread and eggplant dip called baklajani. The bread was lightly toasted and so fresh and the dip was warm and delicious even though I typically do not care for eggplant. We also had the piroshkis with potato for the wife and beef for me. The buttery and flaky pastry was perfect with the rich flavored beef filling. One of the best filled puffed pastries Ive ever had.The golden fish salad was also great. The capers hard boiled egg and the salmon roe made a great bite with the smoked salmon and greens. The pop of that salmon row and oily texture really worked well with the saltiness of the salmon and capers. The borscht was a first for me. It is a nice beet soup that is texturally pleasing with minced beets in a nice broth with a touch of cream to add richness and depth. For the main course I had the beef stroganoff. This has a nice piece of short rib that falls apart when cutting into it. The sauce with the mushrooms was delicious and the mash potatoes were the softest and creamiest potatoes Ive had. They were so tasty when soaking up some of the sauce with each bite.My wife had the vareniki which is a potato dumpling with a garlic cream sauce and crispy shallots. This dish was like a potato filled ravioli that was so pillowy soft. The sauce was rich and savory with the crispy shallots adding a nice contrasting texture. Finally for dessert we had the hot chocolate cake. This cake takes 15 minutes or so before it is delivered to your table, but well worth it. The cake came out hot and super moist in the middle. Served with a berry and passion fruit sauce and vanilla ice cream. This was a great finish to our lunch. The only thing I would ask for is a bit more sauce on the plate to dip each bite in.With neither of us having much experience with Russian cuisine we were highly pleased with each dish. We will definitely recommend this place and look forward to coming back.

As newcomers to Walnut Creek. and very much into the ethnic dining experiences offered here, we enjoyed Babushka this evening. We liked the relatively unfamiliar cuisine. The service and attention from the management in this family restaurant were quite exceptional. Ive always believed that a local cuisine and local wines are meant for each other. That said, Russian and Romanian red wines are a little sweet for our taste, but you can take your own for a very modest corkage fee.Well be back to Babushka.

Went here with my family while visiting. Truly memorable experience! None of us knew what to expect; our closest experience was Polish food. We started with two appetizers; Khachipuri and Scallops. The Khachipuri was similar to a quiche and very tasty. The scallops were raw with peeled segments of pomelo and a salmon colored foam. I had the Golubtsy as an entree. It is turkey and pork with carrots wrapped in cabbage with a chile-pear cream. I also had a pear soda which was amazing! I dont know how this isnt a major soda flavor, but Fanta, Crush or Sunkist needs to get on it right now.The service was also impeccable. The servers were prompt, attentive and helpful. First class all the way! If youre in Walnut Creek do not pass up the opportunity to try this excellent restaurant.

This is probably the best Russian food in the U.S. I was in Walnut Creek for business several months ago, and was blown away--it has been months since I ate there and Im still thinking about how amazing the food was! There are truly culinary geniuses at work here, and they are working with the freshest ingredients. My companion and I had the golubtsy and chicken kiev, and I will never look at these dishes the same way again! Both were absolutely flavorful, the meat tender, and everything felt decadent yet healthy. The honey cake for dessert was also divine. I hope I have a reason to go to Walnut Creek again in the near future, just so that I can enjoy another meal at this place.

We were two couples for dinner. I didnt care for my entree which was a lamb and rice which I thought was going to have some sort of sauce. For me it was too dry my wife had the stroganoff and she loved it the other couple had chicken Kiev and her husband had the same thing I had and he was the same opinion. We all had Russian Caesar salad and that was a Miss for all of us. The dressing wasnt right. It was to charge and didnt have much complexity of flavor. Portions were okay and prices were reasonable. I wanted to be as transparent as possible with my review, as I work as a server for this restaurant. I am not Russian ethnically, nor do I speak the language. Also, prior to working here, I had little to no knowledge of Russian cuisine.Still, I was given a chance to learn, serve, and work. I have worked for different restaurants in different cities-- but Babushka stands out for me because of Chef Zori and front of the house manager, Vavana. They are exceptionally kind and generous bosses. And as a result, I have been given the opportunity to sample an example of every dish.Chef Zori is Russian ethnically but raised as a child in the Bay Area. He has been French trained in culinary school and apprenticed in Napa. In other words, he is the best of many worlds-- and therefore has his menu reflect his respect for good ingredients, prepared well, with elegant plating and inobtrusive seasoning. The Chicken Kiev with grilled vegetables is a wonderful example with its generous portion and understated coating. My personal favorite is the grilled Rack of Lamb served over polenta-- savory and hearty. The soups are all Seinfeld worthy-- especially the Cream of Mushroom (with truffle oil).Vavana is gracious and extremely knowledgeable of both front and back of the house affairs. She is THE wine steward, pastry chef, bartender, and head server.I didnt know whether to give 4 or 5 stars because on the one hand, nothing is truly perfect. However, if you cant give your own restaurant 5 stars-- what is it that you dont believe in?To the negative, as it were-- there is no microwave oven in the kitchen and almost everything is made to order and fresh fresh fresh. But that being said, good food takes time. The Chicken Kiev typically takes 20 minutes from when the order is placed. To the positive, and there are many positives, the food is delicious. For Walnut Creek, there is ample parking. There is also a hidden gem of an outdoor patio; and the restaurant caters to sizeable parties and events. There is even a dance floor complete with mirror ball. Finally, there is the deli, which many locals know very well. All in all, for an elegant night out; or sit down lunch that is out of the ordinary-- come visit Babushka.
