I had a great time here, its very quirky and unique. Definitely targeted more towards adults, I think children would be bored out of their mind. I learned a lot about Wichita and the surrounding areas. They had a lot of really cool antique items of all kinds. Not sure if I would say its a must-see museum but it was interesting.
I wanted to visit this place just because of the building! The museum is housed in the old city and it looks like a castle! The museum doesn’t have tons of hands on displays, but there is still enough hands on that my 7 year old gave it five stars. All three kids loved the old type writer set up so they could use it. There was videos here and there throughout the museum and so much information! The very rare (1 of 8 left) Jones Six automobile was my favorite. There was information about the city over the years, old toys, exquisite silver plated items, old furniture, aviation, and more. We spent three hours and barely saw everything, but were getting too hungry to keep learning. The lady working in the gift shop was super friendly and helped us with other places to see in the area. The only bummer was that they didn’t have a souvenir magnet of the museum in the shop (that’s our thing).
Wichita is an interesting town. At pivotal points in American history, the city lucked out, followed the right course and benefitted. While many of the exhibits sorta come at the history sideways, it still has plenty of things to see related to its late 19th and early to mid 20th century prosperity. Chisholm Trail, oil boom, aviation, etc.
Historical info and cool little Wichita/Kansas trinkets, if you didnt go in school go NOW
It had been a few years since taking the kiddos here before, so we took advantage of the free admission fir the citys birthday celebration by bringing in a birthday card fir the city of Wichita. We spent a few hours going through the exhibits and learning obout or history. My daughter even found it interesting finding items here that had a link to other museums here in our state which we had visited this summer.
What a gem! This laid back museum is chalked full of great ICT memorabilia, there are so many exhibits. Couldve easily spent hours reading the in-depth display discriptions inside Wichita- Sedgwick Co Museum. Dont forget to relax in Herritage Park, its attatched to the Museum building. We went on a weekend and got a good discounted rate through Groupon.
A very interesting experience being able to essentially take a step back in time to see the way Wichita was back in the day.
My daughter attended the 4 day songwriting workshop. She had a blast. Made some good friends. & Im sure its a memory she will never forget. The teachers were Awesome. And the last day they all dang the songs they wrote in the auditorium. We also got to tour the building a few times. The museum is just so cool. Go if you havent been
Always enjoy visiting the Museum!
A lot of old and new exhibits.
An AMAZING museum!!! The building is a beautiful piece of history itself! There are 4 floors of wonderful antiques and artifacts that are displayed in such a way that you are taken back in time. I learned a lot about Wichita that I did not know! Very well done!! It also has a gorgeous gift shop with everything from books, to toys, to jewelry! Way to go Wichita!!
Really not for little kids I would say 7 and up. Before going I read a bunch of reviews that said this is for all age groups. I also read that there was a lot of hands on stuff for the kids including toys and dress up clothes for the kids to play with. This is no longer the case as everything is now in displays. I only got to look a little at the museum because we went here as a fun little educational something for our young children to do on a very hot afternoon and they were just to little to have any interest in what was available, but what I did see was really well done and looked very interesting.
Always lovely to visit and see our history.
Excellent place! The museum its beautifully designed and full of little details. We loved knowing more about Wichita. The staff was really kind and the gardens amazing
March 2020. Many different exhibits. Great overview of the lifestyle and industry for the last ~150 years. Recommend.
If you are in downtown Wichita, do no miss the County Historical Museum. For one thing, the building it is in is a historical artifact in itself. And the interior has must that you really dont know, but should know, about the history of this area. Dont miss the display about the sit-in by NAACP Youth that opened up the lunch counter at Dockum Drugs in Wichita, and soon all across the state. This sit-in is receiving recognition as the first student sit-in against segregation in the country.
Really great history of Wichita! We got a free tour but we would have paid because of all the great things this building contains! They have a lovely outside patio that would be perfect for a wedding or a party, just make sure its not planed in the middle of summer because it was very hot. Overall great experience and I learned a lot, would recommend being a history buff or interested in learning Wichitas history some kids seem bored walking through.
Even my toddlers enjoyed this museum, something for every age group. All floors were accessible by an elevator. Great for when you have a stroller.
Very interesting with lots of information to read, hear and see. Loved the hands on exhibit too. Bears are my favorite.
Has a lot of great local history, and the building itself is historic. The exhibits are meticulously designed and there are lots of artifacts and even some recreations of Indian wares. It doesnt have anything on Bleeding Kansas or the Civil War, unfortunately. And I didnt feel the exhibit on the Little Arkansas Treaty did that conflict enough justice.
The exhibits are very organized, and most of them are easy to read. Located inside a gorgeous historic building, across the street from the current Downtown Public Library. I found the multiple levels of the museum somewhat confusing and difficult to navigate. Parking is tricky... feed the meter weekdays 8am - 5pm, Holidays & Weekends STREET Parking is Free.
Free entry. Informative exhibits. An area for kids to touch Buffalo bones. New mayors office exhibit too! Great place to cool off while learning about Kansas history!
Rich in Sedgwick county history. Love the building and everything inside. Great way to spend hours
This location has a nicer decor with the stone-look tiles but very crowded.
Fun place for kids to learn history. Plus their summer programs for kids are excellent
Wonderful experience here. So much I didnt know about wichita and our county. Lots of interactive exhibits. The woman at the front desk was very friendly. And no one else was there when we went we enjoyed the museum very much.
Highly curated museum with the best visual and artifactual history of the City of Wichita. Needs more Native American exhibits telling the story of their long history and stewardship of the lands before European exploration, occupation, exploitation and outright theft.
Never went inside but the picture I posted on here was the museum was a night that downtown was invaded by hundreds of crows. The creepiest night I have ever had but really cool
Loved looking at the exhibitsVery interesting and only $5. What a bargain!
WOW! A must see. I his is geat history and I learned a lot from the visit. Very friendly people and treat you like you are family.
Pretty neat for the price. A few hands on things too.
Lots of interesting items, very educational and fun. First ever electric guitar is here.
I love this place, it is very informative and has an old castle feel. Great way to spend an afternoon with family.
Always a fun time...so many events! Great place and staff!
Beautiful building. Great history of Wichita. Very clean.
Very interesting and well documented exhibits.
Fun, under 6 is free, beautiful courtyard, lots of neat history.
This place was OK... it had a very nice staff and the artifacts were interesting. But, unless you get a tour or guide to explain things, you dont get all the information.
We got in free for an event and loved it. Beautiful building with great exhibits.
We really enjoyed this museum. I would definitely recommend visiting at least once.
Nice little museum with food history if Wichita and Sedgwick county.
What a great time! We love everything about the museum.
Great history of Wichita and Sedgwick County. Lots to see
Reasonable entrance fee of $5. Well worth every penny. Lots of interesting history of Wichita.
An excellent county historical museum and very reasonable ($5) adult admission price. Lots to see and read.
Nice well organized exhibits. Nice workers
Received a very unpleasant, condescending greeting from an older woman at the front desk. we turned around an left.
Awesome ...nice price and information for everyone
Nice museum, they had a great variety of displays.
A real step back in time adventure! A great visual learning opportunity about the history of Wichita!
