Solid record store in North Austin with super nice owner and staff. Not as big as Waterloo, but they have a good overall selection and deeper blues, and Texas music offerings. They also have a cool retro used audio selection for sale with vintage turntables, receivers and amps. Great place to look for music and have a coffee next door.

On a single visit I can come home with a stack that includes D.R.I and Austin funk on a 45 and choice used 90s House and Breaks tracks from a local DJs crate. This is where I know I can buy stylus replacements and LP (12 and 7!!) mailers in a pinch.Online the website seems to update inventory in real time and orders process quickly. They offer curbside / pickup for those of us that dig spending an afternoon in one of the last pockets of town that keeps the spirit of the Weird City that was.Support local music outlets.

Great record shop next to a sweet coffee spot and a vintage clothing store, so you can make a day of it. Breakaway has an online store and curbside pickup, perfect for those who want to shop and keep distance from others during the pandemic. Just picked up The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill for $15 less than listed on Amazon Prime. Thanks Yall!

Man, what an unexpected surprise! I stopped in at Breakaway to towards the end of my trip to Austin, just to kill some time before getting on the road back to Houston. Not that I wasn’t expecting a solid record store, the reviews I read were all positive, but the selection I found at Breakaway was beyond impressive.Sorting the new arrivals section by genre is a nice touch – most record stores just throw all new arrivals into one section and you get stuck sorting through a ton of records you probably have no interest in.For me, the highlight was Breakaway’s rare section. I’ve been collecting for about 20 years now, been to record stores all over the country, but at Breakway, I ended up seeing a few records that I’ve never seen in shops before. When I saw they had the MoFi issue of Sonic Youth’s Goo, I got a little weak in the knees, then scooped it up without a second’s hesitation. I’ve been on the hunt for that for years. On top of a great, deep selection of records, they have a great selection of used turntables at, what I consider, very reasonable prices. Staff was friendly and gave me a Breakaway tote bag, which was a perfect carry-on for my flight back to NJ.If you’re record shopping in Austin, don’t sleep on Breakaway Records!

Review №30

Outstanding used vinyl selection. Records are fairly priced and condition is top notch! They also have three turntables for listening to used vinyl. I’m from out of town and went to several vinyl stores today including Antone’s and Waterloo. I didn’t buy any records at those places as prices were way to high for the condition of vinyl I found. Breakaway Records is the place to go!

I inherited some records and have no interest in playing them. Everything I do is digital even though Im 58 years old. The guys at the store were great to work with and gave me a good price on 1/3 of the records. I donated the other two-thirds of the records to them for their giveaway days. That felt great and that was their idea. That little corner shopping area with the vintage clothing store and the awesome outdoor bar restaurant is really cool and I will be back there just to hang out

Great place if you want to feel like just walking in the store is an inconvenience to the people working there. Reflects poor on the business if the customer service is lacking. Selection is good, but several times over the 4 years I have lived in the neighborhood I have been severely disappointed in the staffs demeanor. Not sure if I am not enough of a regular for them to give the time of day to? First time visiting this shop, and sadly I did not have a good experience. Selection was okay, though staff was unwelcoming. They seemed to go out of their way to silently follow shoppers instead of verbally asking how they were doing, or if they needed any help. A strange way to cultivate business. At one point they did speak to me to tell me phones were not allowed- though I did not see any signage for this. I felt like I was being scolded by my highschool English teacher all over again. I respected the shop wishes, though left a little later to give business to a different record shop. Its sad because I was excited about this cute spot!

I have been coming here for 2 years now, since I began my record collection. Ive bought dozens of records here - and they specialize in the stuff that I love. They have one of the best used 70s/80s collections in Austin - all the stuff I love. Ive bought Bowie, Talking Heads, Brian Eno, Velvet Underground, The Jesus & Mary Chain, and Wire here. Anyone into 70s/80s art/noise rock should check this place out. Im never disappointed here.

Review №71

I know people who work here, so I like it okay, but Breakaway doesnt have too many genres I like. Also, the records are organized in loose alphabetical order, meaning all the Ws are together, but not in a strict alphabetical order. I worked at a record store in Dallas that had records organized mainly by artist. An artist with very few records to his name was put in the corresponding letters general bin, but still put in alphabetical order. Thats the standard I use to judge all other record stores organization systems.

Some good stuff, but Im after random gems and compilations, not extra-expensive collector LPs. Still, I like the collection of speakers, receivers, and turntables for sale and the way the store is laid out. There are bargain areas but they are tough to access. If I want a specific LP and Im willing to pay for it this is the place to go, but for exploration its not my favorite.

I dig this spot a lot. Its got a good selection of records, mostly used, some new, and a friendly staff.
