This is one of the cutest and most charming book stores I have ever been to! It was nice to browse their selection of books before starting the ghost tour. The employees in the store were very kind. The ghost tour was an absolute blast! Joe was a hoot. I loved hearing about the history of Charleston mixed with ghost stories. I believe Joe told 7-8 ghost stories and each one was so interesting. He kept me and my boyfriend engaged and interested for the 1.5 hour long tour! It was really nice being able to walk around the city and take breaks to sit for each story. I want to thank Joe for his kindness, entertainment, patience, and fun! Definitely a memory to last a lifetime. Someone give Joe an Oscar, Emmy, Tony award!!!
The Lost Stories of Black Charleston tour was one of the highlights of our trip. Led by Damon Fordham, we got to experience his captivating retelling of Charleston histories that you wont hear on any other tour. These stories are important and we appreciated him sharing his experiences and knowledge. Damon took time to answer many questions and gave very thoughtful answers. A truly moving way to spend a few hours.
Went on a night time ghost tour and our tour guide Glenna was amazing! She told all of the stories so well and really knew her stuff. She included a lot of interesting history tidbits and made me really believe the stories she was telling. Also, this is the only tour group with access to the graveyard with the lady in white- such a cool experience! I really recommend going with this company for your ghost tour!
The bookstore is quaint and has a decent selection. The ghost tour with Rhett was amazing- such great timing, delivery, and story telling. Love the history and the small tangents (the earthquake bolts part and powder magazine buildings were fascinating!). I love that it felt grounded and wasn’t trying to scare or embellish too much. Fun jokes, great stops (loved the Unitarian churchyard). Highly recommend, this was a fun tour with great stories
Joe was awesome! The tour was fun, interactive, and super interesting! I loved the stories and the guide did an incredible job interacting with the audience! A must try tour, 11/10!
Loved the bookstore the staff was very helpful. Attended the 8:30 walking ghost tour with guide Joe and had an amazing time. My teenagers loved it as well. Definitely recommend the tour.
This is the book store to visit in Charleston. So many incredible books.
Joseph was a fantastic tour guide! The whole group was enthralled with his lively tellings of the various haunts of Charleston. We will definitely be back any time we are in town!
The bookstore had an amazing selection of books, as well as a neat little corner of books when you first walk in that she employees have read and recommend. They also have random cute little notecards throughout the store with a synopsis of the story and which employee suggests it.
Such a great little book shop! For being a small store they had a wide selection of books, so many of were on my to-read list. Well organized, new and classic titles alike. Will absolutely be coming back!
The tour was fun and interesting. Unfortunately, our guide turned it into a power walk along broken side walks dark cobble stone alleys and a completely unlit cemetary. Our guide said he walked fast, but would wait. He walked so fast we lost sight of him. I found him to be inconsiderate of members of his group
Rhet was amazing and a very fun person. Wish we could follow him around all day!He spoke loud and clear and was open to comments and questions. We felt safe with him even in the darkness of the night in a graveyard.
Delightfully quaint and charming bookstore on King Street that also offers the best ghost tours in Charleston. Love this little place! Check em out!
Book store was charming with great reads and fabulous recommendations. Ghost tour depends on the guide, some are definitely better than others!
Very good small book store. Nice variety.
Visited Buxton Books for The Ghosts of Charleston Tour This tour was amazing! Simon was our guide, and he MADE the tour. He told us 5 ghost stories based on stories from the book The Ghosts of Charleston by Julian T. Buxton III. We stopped at the Powder Magazine, in front of St. Philips Church, down Philadelphia Alley, and then had exclusive access to the Unitarian Church graveyard at night. We did the 9:30pm tour on a Thursday night and there were 13 people in our group. Simon told us to take lots of pictures and helped us to know what we were looking for in those pics to see signs of light that were not manmade light. Simon was a captivating historical storyteller and I highly recommend this tour!
We attended a walking ghost tour and our guide was Coleman this past Sunday evening. What an amazing storyteller with an outstanding gift of reciting haunting and memorized poetry - with flair! Ask for him as your guide, he will not disappoint!
Attended the walking ghost tour led by Coleman. He is an amazing storyteller and provided a fantastic experience.
This quaint and perfect bookstore will hande what youre looking or,or they can order it. Shop local! Wonderful tours stay out of here as well. Highly recommend.
The ghost tour, led by Glenna, was both informative and entertaining. Would highly recommend this ghost tour.
Simon is a great guide, as well as a true historian. He was very engaging during his tour and took his time at each spot. The tour was well worth our time. Dogs are also welcome on the tour. Our dog had a great time and was very attentive throughout the night.
The guide Coleman was amazing, informative and friendly. His timing was impeccable as he told the ghost tales.
Fun and cool bookstore in the heart of the charming Charleston downtown. Great selection, friendly staff and owner. And the tours are super cool.
First time visitors. Loved the selections and the atmosphere.
Cute little bookstore, meeting place for walking ghost tour
We signed up for their ghost 👻 tour. The afternoon of, my wife really was physically hurting and we wanted to either get an earlier time or do it the following day or cancel. There was no negotiating. So we decided to go ahead with the tour. After the first stop, we went to locations where ghost stories were told that occurred in other places around Charlestown. Because my wife was hurting and we werent visiting actual haunted places, we left the tour 30 minutes early.
Pray that Coleman will be your tour guide, he is excellent!!!
Outstanding tour..our tour guide was a young college student he was awesome!
Great Bookstore, super nice staff
Great local bookstore, fantastic place to find books about the area (fiction and non), local authors, etc.
When in Charleston, Buxton Books on King Street is a must stop. Not only do they have a great selection of books and recommendations, they have the nicest staff. We spoke with the owner on a recent visit and she was so kind and helpful. If you have time, definitely take their ghost tour!
I had an amazing Ghost Tour! We had a wonderful tour guide (Simon I believe). He was captivating and an amazing story teller.
Very happening, cool place.
Rhett was the best. So fun and informational.
I had a great experience discovering Charleston under a different angle. The tour was absolutely fantastic thanks to Simon!
Is there anything Simon doesnt know? Ive so enjoyed coming here over the years.
I really enjoyed the tour. The history of the African American & slave stories which was started @ the bookstore.was planning on going back. But the situation in the area made it not a wise move. I’m very prayerful that the bookstore wasn’t damaged. The owner is very knowledgeable and has a great Heart for the culture of S.C. and it’s guest.
Thanks to Simon for an absolutely wonderful ghost tour!! No better way to get a feel for the history and depth of Charleston.
The bookstore itself is super charming with a lot of character and interesting books. We did a ghost tour here on our first night in town. Our guide was fine, but the tour itself was a bit lacking. We were only told about 3 ghost stories and only the last one was actually creepy and I think its because of the added ambiance of being in the graveyard. I was hoping for something more engaging and intense since Charleston is rich in history.
Great selection of books and friendly, wonderful staff
Buxton Books on King Street in Charleston is a really good book store that is unique to the Charleston area. I like the selection of books that they have available and the experience the they provide. The staff here is very helpful and provides assistance when you need it. This is a good place to go to find a book as a gift.
Simon was a fabulous tour guide. Very knowledgeable and entertaining. The best guide Ive ever had locally!
Buxton Books is a complete gem with a friendly and knowledgeable staff. Its a great source for finding works by Low Country authors. Frequent events are held here, including author readings and post-show talk-throughs of local theater shows. The owners, Polly and Julian (Author of The Ghosts of Charleston) are big proponents of local art and are just all around lovely people. Its definitely worth a visit!
Small independent bookstore with personal service.
Very nicely curated selection of books, staff is always great and friendly. Highly recommend a visit.
Our ghost tour from here was great. The guide was a wonderful orator and he took us in the Unitarian graveyard where groups are normally not allowed. It was tons of fun.
Clearly not a place for a variety of books but a good collection thats fairly unique though. We were there for the Ghost Tour which is based off the book written by the store owner. We were on the tour with Greg who was fantastic. Its great to see someone who does what he does because he loves doing it. It shows. A great storyteller and he knows how to give you the details. Highly recommended!
Amazing bookstore!
My wife and I were visiting from upstate NY and couldnt have had a better experience. We did the walking tour with author and professor Damon Fordham. It was a 2 hour tour throughout Charleston describing historical stories that you will not read in the history books. Upon completion had a great conversation with the owner of the book store. My wife bought 3 of Mr. Fordhams book and he graciously signed them all. A truly great day!
Large selection of books of all kinds. Youll surely find a great summer book or novel.
Wonderful bookstore on King Street in Historic District Charleston. Love the new location.I highly, highly, highly recommend the Lost Stories of Black Charleston tour. The guide, Damon Fordham, is informative and exceptionally interesting. I could have listened to his stories for much longer than the 2 hour tour!!
The customer service is outstanding! A small friendly book store... and their ghost tour is a must! Extremely informative and entertaining. Our guide, Sean, was a professional all the way around. If you can only do one of these tours, definitely do this one The Ghosts of Charleston...
My friend and I happened upon Buxton Books on my first trip to Charleston. From the moment we walked in, I knew we had made a good decision in stopping by. We were instantly treated like family, and Stephanie went above and beyond to make sure that we were satisfied. We had so much fun laughing with the staff that we decided to come back and give the ghost tour a shot. This tour was the highlight of my trip to Charleston. Sean Wallis (thanks for spelling it for us!) was funny and personable and very knowledgeable about the city of Charleston. I was engaged the entire time and the tour was educational but also very fun. The staff at Buxton Books is easily one of the kindest group of strangers I have ever met, and on my future trips to visit Charleston I will be sure to stop in.
Super adorable with a cute unique style. Pretty hip and still historical. Very fun books you cant just find at Barns and Noble. They even had a section dedicated to the haunted aspects of Charleston. We bought a cute book with drawings and stories about Bill Murray haha
The bookstore is really cute and features a pretty good selection for the size. This is definitely the best ghost tour in Charleston! The tour guides are always great and there is nothing better than hearing the story of The Lady in White in the actual churchyard! We go every time were here.
The bookstore was great, nice selection and friendly, helpful staff. Our tour was amazing! Mr. Neal is a wonderful guide and really makes the stories and history come alive. Highly recommended!!
Sorry but our tour guide was just not very good. Stories were long and not exciting at all. There were 7 of us and not one of us enjoyed the stories. Some good photo opportunities, the grave yard was the only thing that was remotely spooky. Would not recommend this tour.
Don’t even bother with any other ghost tour or bookstore in Charleston—this is IT.This review is for both the store and the ghost tour— five stars each. First, the store itself: Welcoming, thoughtfully curated selection, books I can’t find back home (and I live in a much bigger city) and have been hesitant to buy from Amazon. The cashier offered to keep my books behind the desk while I was on the tour, very considerate.Second, the tour: We had gone on a terrible ghost tour the previous night with a company that shall not be named, so we signed up for the Buxton Books tour as a palate cleanser. Our guide, Greg, killed it with his in-depth knowledge and ability to keep it interesting in such a mixed group (adults, small kids, baby in a stroller). The highlight is exclusive entrance to the Unitarian Church graveyard. I get chills again just thinking about it. Greg recited a poem from one of my favorite authors at the end, so cool, such relevance to tie it all together. I can’t say enough good things about the whole experience.
Was able to pre order my fav mindful teaching companion from them and found 2 books to gift while browsing that day. They have a diverse author collection and a cozy atmosphere.
Okay, lets start by judging the book by its cover. This is a small bookstore with a small, eclectic collection of books. Then theres the staff. Incredibly helpful and pleasant even in a city known for its pleasant society. As for the tours....WOW!!My wife and I booked the walking Ghosts of Charleston tour Ied by Mr. Neale and it was as entertaining as it was educational. Im not giving away any secrets but if you are considering a tour of this sort do yourself a solid and book with these folks. You will not regret it.
We had just departed the cruise ship with about 4 hours to spare before our fight. We walked into Buxton Books and the nicest lady in the world gave us a place to store our luggage, recommended a perfect place to eat and even set us up with a carriage tour of Charleston. The place, the people, and the experience was superb! Thank You !!
The tour with Rhett was an amazing experience and a personal note to Rhett we saw the lady in white, maybeWe have a picture that was taken off the church and there’s a white mist
We had an amazing time with Mr. Neal as our Ghost tour guide. I cannot recommend this enough, we had a wonderful time.
Nice selection of the history of Charleston
Great bookstore with nice variety of books. Very helpful staff
Great little eclectic bookstore and well done stories in the ghost tour
I loved the cozy feel of the store and the recommendations from the employees.
Paid for a tour, asked to use the restroom before the tour started. We were told there wasnt a bathroom to use due to public health concerns. We were directed to the garage down the street. After coming back from our bathroom experience one of the other patrons asked for a bathroom. He was then directed to a bathroom behind the cashier. Wth!! I havent even started the tour and Im frustrated. She told me he didnt have time to make it to another bathroom
Charming bookstore with an owner and staff passionate about books. Marvelous and diverse selection of books for all ages. I wanted everything in the shop.
Fabulous store and staff. Books you wont find at chain stores. Order any book you could buy online.
Great book store. Bought a couple things here for my Moms birthday.
Fantastic shop, even better ghost tour! Wonderful experience overall.
Love it! One of the very few mom and pop book stores left in Charleston. Please spend your money locally!
Went for a poetry workshop and reading. What a gorgeous bookstore! I will be sure to visit again when I return to Charleston in April.
The tour started out interesting but Mr meal drags his stories out way to long. Thought tour was only going to be hr and half long. It took us 3 hrs. Lost interest half way through!
Stopped in after passing by it during our visit to Charleston. Great little space with a wonderful selection!
Their ghost tour is the best in the city. Ask for Sean to lead your tour
Great local bookstore.
Wonderful book store even had lovely talk with the owner about different local authors and Charleston history
My boyfriend and I stumbled upon Buxton Books around 9pm last Friday night and loved it! The two women working who we chatted with were so kind!
Great little book store and excellent staff!
Took ghost tour last night from Buxton book store with Mr. Neal is was great, he was a fantastic guide.
Great staff. Pleasant atmosphere.
Wonderful staff, great location.
Unique bookstore with local interests
Great selection and wonderful service from our cashier!
Absolutely a 5!!! So nice and what a terrific book store.
Small shop, but their ghost tour is the best in the city
Our tour guide, Mr. Neal, was excellent. Very professional!
Spoiled on book stores living in Mississippi. Nice book collection, just small.
Absolutely loved the charming bookstore and the staff! Im hooked ♡
