I loved the food! I ordered coffee and a bacon, egg, and cheese biscuit that was delicious. My girlfriend ordered the pickled onion and pork belly, which were also delightful. We came in during a peak brunch hour but didnt have any trouble getting our meal promptly. I hope next time I stop by to try more of their menu, but I would recommend this establishment for a quick meal. The interior was cluttered, but the food made up for it.
With little knowledge of the menu or style of service, I entered Quality Pie just looking for a filling breakfast, preferably on the greasy side ;) As the cashier was suggesting the most popular items, I was immediately drawn to the pork belly biscuit. I also ordered a Berliner Weisse style fruity beer. The food was outstanding! The salsa verde, fried egg, and pickled onions were delicious and added some moisture to the pork belly (not the most moist Ive ever had, but delicious in the context). The cost of the entree was $12 and fueled me for the whole afternoon. The food was brought to me outside and my plates cleared for me. Upon returning my beer glass the owner even suggested I try the beer with a raspberry syrup next time and was sorry he hadnt suggested it sooner. Ill be back for more delicious brunches & next time Ill have to try a coffee or mimosa!Delicious biscuit meal and a great spot to sit outdoors and watch busy Avon street go by.
From breakfast to lunch to dinner, the “quality” is outstanding here. The first thought that came to mind when trying the food is that it is served with a special ingredient: love. Get the apple fritters and a latte in the morning or try one of the Cuban sandwiches. I was delighted by a pan-fried local rabbit with jus for dinner and it was the best I have had without exaggeration. Try Quality Pie! I’ll be back.
One of the best breakfast/ lunch spots in Charlottesville. Everything is made in house (including their delicious pickles!!!). Menu is constantly updated according to what’s in season. It feels like walking into your grandmother’s kitchen every time you go in. Cannot recommend highly enough! You won’t be disappointed.
To echo some of the previous comments, it was as though the woman at the counter was extremely irritated at everyone who came in. We were ignored for about 5 minutes (not even a hello) and then when she eventually came over she just said What do you want?...not the warmest breakfast environment, but not the end of the world. What was absolutely a killer was the food. Before we get there, lets talk about the menu. There are no paper copies, so you have to rely on the chalk board. The titles on the chalk board were written by someone that cares, but the menu looks like it was written by a rushed child who was intent on making sure no one can understand what they wrote. And, our friendly hostess seemed to be irritated when every customer that came in commented on an inability to read the menu. See the attached picture to see what I mean. Now, onto the food. The place is called Quality Pie, so I figured Id start with a piece of apple pie. Despite being told it was made earlier that morning (it was only 930 at the time), it came out of the fridge (why would you refrigerate a fresh pie that you expect to sell that day?), but even though it was cold, it totally fell apart on the plate. The crust separated from the filling and it became a pie mess. The hostess/waitress noticed this, attempted to smoosh it back together, and, not thinking I noticed her doing that and failing, decided to try and cover it up with whipped cream. How did the pie taste? It tasted as though it had been dressed with vinegar. Look, I know properly made apple pie has a touch of vinegar in it. But, you should not think you are eating vinegar pie when its done. Without having a 50-50 ration of heavy whipped cream to pie, it was entirely inedible. Like, bad bad.We also ordered an apple fritter, beignet, at chocolate chip cookie. The cookie had decent flavor but was extremely stale. At least it tasted good. As to the fried treats, there is a special arrogance to serve fritters and beignets cold (items that take 30 seconds to fry fresh). Theres a reason no where else serves them cold: it is disgusting. It would be like offering someone McDonalds fries three hours after they were made. Why wouldnt they just fry them fresh for people? My wife also paid $15 (!!!) for what turned out to be the most horrendously made salmon lox meal we have ever had. They basically took a piece of old rye bread, smeared some cheese spread on it, took a handful of undressed (why?) greens, a piece of store bought lox, and a mangled egg and called that a meal. The egg (see attached photo) somehow overcooked the yolk while leaving runny whites. Thats bad execution to the point that it would be hard to replicate. But, replicate they did as the woman sitting behind us sent her eggs back to be recooked for the same reason. We spared ourselves from having another interaction with the hostess/waitress and took it home for our dog to eat.Positive: The coffee was quite good, according to my wife. Although, in a first from a breakfast place, they charge you extra for refills. It was as though they wanted to make sure that exactly zero of the experience there was good.On a beautiful saturday morning, it is no surprise that this had to be the only breakfast place in town that was virtually empty. Now we know why. We wasted $29 dollars on poorly executed food, felt uncomfortable the entire time, and left entirely unsatisfied.
I wish I would have read the reviews before going!! Customer service is terrible!! OWNER attended is crazy wild he is very disrespectful. I do not recommend and the pie are overly cooked or too dry and nasty and too expensive for something that you can buy at Kroger lol for $5. I hope the Owner seek help and take anger management class lol seriously!
Quality Pie on Avon in Charlottesville is a delicious experience, and I had long heard of it as a must-visit. Its true. I was not sure what to expect, but it turned out to be a lot more than pie.Tomas Rahal, who created Quality Pie, was on the premises during my visit, and just happens to be good friends with my lunchmates. I got to hear him talk a bit about grapes and yeast and sample some delicious wine ahead of the meal. The two wines we sampled were from the same grape, but the two versions were worlds apart, one like an imperial russian stout, quite dark and viscous, and the other like a bright chardonnay, yellow with a solid tang. He told us the only difference between the two was time. The rich coffee was a beautiful contrast. While we waited, I visited the beautiful art, small sculptural displays, and inviting atmosphere of the interior. We sat outside, and Avon provided a lively show.Tomas invited us to try the fresh chanterelle frittata, but I had my hopes set on the chorizo, egg, pepper and polenta, which was divine, a spanish morning on a plate. Each bite revealed texture and flavor in good balance. The chorizo is from a local charcuterie, bright with spice and taut, with a snap in the casing. It reminded me of kielbasa. The egg was perfectly cooked and seasoned, with the yolk still velvety in a cooked pocket, and salt in good measure. The polenta was crisp with a soft center, and the pepper was sweet and cooked to a still-firm bite.Perhaps the most beautiful moment was giving Tomas a hug after we ate, hes a buddha who walks amongst us, and it was a kind gesture to exchange thanks for the delicious meal and conversation. Service was kind and quick, the food was quality defined, and the atmosphere is a quiet contrast to the bustle of the city. You should go.
I suggest that nobody goes here!!! The owner attitude is terrible!! He is very disrespectful he cares about his parking space then his customers, I parked in front of his shop and walked over to YADYS to pick up my clothes first then I was going to stop by and get lunch and he rushed in yadys started yelling saying move now before you get towed!! Never again I have told a lot people do not stop by there ever again!! Do not support his business!! He is awful!!
The name is deceptive. They serve more than pie. The name also promises “quality” but fails to deliver.I believe you can tell a good pie shop based on their Pecan. The slice I had was mediocre, dry, and lacked the gooey-center that one might expect from a place with Pie in their name. The color was greenish and the flavors quite bland. I was underwhelmed.Staff were fantastic and friendly. The shop is hip. The Pie just wasn’t quality.
Wonderful restaurant, excellent food and service.
I always support local. I went here with my mother today for the first time, and mentioned it to tall woman no response or gratitude. Our slice of pie was very under cooked like chewy raw dough, were the crispy flaky crust. I definitely would like my money back.
Very kind staff. A great experience and a lovely outdoor area when out in nice weather.
I stopped there this morning with my son.We decided to try the apple fritter and a piece of quiche. The quiche, she nuked in the microwave so it was warm on the outside and cold on the inside. The apple fritters were disgusting. This is from my eight year old son. My son also got a coke in the old style bottle . It cost just under 3 dollars. Then there was the pie, I bought the pie for my wife. She loves Key lime pie. It was over cooked. There was 25.00 down the drain. The whole event was like 37 bucks. I feel like u was taken on this one.
Very rude management! Came here on a whim for a good dessert. My husband asked the lady if they have pies as the menu didn’t list any type of pies, her response was “Are you kidding me?” Worst pie I’ve had. Sorry to say your shop wouldn’t make it in TN with your lack of hospitality!
Delicious, both the pies and other food served for lunch. Very friendly folks
Its always a pleasure to get quality food from QP!
After traveling in Barcelona and Càdiz this summer, how delighted I was to come back to Charlottesville and find Boquarones and small plate Tapas in Quality Pie! More impressive yet are their deserts, and their very fine sherry, from the Jerez region of Andalusia! This time I had a grilled cheese with the lightest bread, Gruyere, pesto, and pear! The staff are incredible, polite, efficient, and invested in their customers. Happy sigh!
Granddaughter and I stopped in looking for Key Lime pie. Not only did they happen to have one, but it was probably the best Key Lime pie Ive had in years! Will be back!
This place is a slice of breakfast, pastry & coffee heaven! We had “Cortado” and fresh egg + bacon breakfast sandwiches while sitting on their lovely patio. Mary was very attentive and her hospitality reminds me why I love Cville so much. I recommend slowing down your morning rush to stop in and enjoy the flavors, aromas and scenery. You can tell there is a passion for creating happy food moments here .
The sweet pie is pricey, and not that good. Normally this wouldnt be worth two stars, but pie is in the name of the restaurant, so they really need to nail it.I came in the other day for pie and went with a slice of apple and a slice of strawberry rhubarb. Both looked a little old and were certainly small for the price ($4 each). The apple filling was bland and rather sparse - it had very few apple pieces. The crust was a disaster. Not flaky, barely sweet, and very bready. The filling in the strawberry rhubarb tasted a little better, but it too was a very meager portion, and had similar issues with the crust. For comparison, frozen pie is better than this. Grocery store pie is *way* better than this. Truck stop pie is in a whole different league. Even a certain fast food establishment makes a better apple pie. When it comes to pie you have a lot of options, I would avoid this one.
What a disappointment! I felt like the woman at the counter was irritated we came in. There was one other customer so you’d think she’d have been happier to get customers. I asked for my scone to be warmed up; little did I know that meant microwaved. Yuck! You can’t microwave baked goods! Good grief!! The latte I ordered was bitter. My husband and son got fried chicken biscuits. Microwaved. Except the sriracha butter which was still frozen. This place had good reviews! I have no idea why.
I can’t say enough about this place. Went for a piece of pie on Thursday night, Strawberry Rhubarb. Had some Champagne with it. Not just a pie place. Somebody was having Hanger steak, looked good so we went back Saturday night for hanger steak, it was great. Then had the Sour Cherry pie. Wasn’t sour at all. I would not visit Charlottesville without going back. Owner was a great guy and it felt like I’d been going for years. Picnic tables outside, old diner feel inside.
My. God.Best food in Charlottesville. Cannot believe this was my first time here. Everything was delicious and the portions are more than fair. Say yes to dessert with homemade whipped cream
Rude owner
Hands down my favorite place in Charlottesville. The tapas and wine are absolutely amazing. My favorite deserts are the key lime pie and the apple fritters. As one gal in the restaurant said regarding the fritters; they are life changing! Keep it up Tomas and see you next time I’m in town.
QUALITY FIASCO! They forgot my order! They brought my white Male partner his breakfast and he was finished eating and mine was not on view. A kind remainder and they discovered the snafu. We still were smiling. Spontaneously They offered a refund but it was never applied. ON TOP OF ALL THAT the coffee was BAD, the biscuit are fake. The chery pie was good. So if I go again Ill skip fried eggs biscuit and potatoes. And stick to the pie
Quality Pie has been my go-to breakfast spot in Charlottesville since it opened. The food is amazing quality, the atmosphere is cozy and the staff is always welcoming and attentive. What would have been a 5 star review has been docked to 3 stars...because I feel the best menu item has been demoted to only weekdays!! Bring the egg on a roll and coffee back to the weekend menu!
Great friendly team! I love the interior and that they used furnishings that are local or re-purposed from local places. Food was great and as with any restaurant they just opened and will have some kinks be patient and give them a chance, also keep in mind peak times. You will likely have to wait on a Saturday morning versus a Wednesday morning. Toast with iced coffee to go was great!
Always enjoy a hot meal and great service here. One of the few places downtown with its own parking
Really fantastic comfort food! I got udon noodles with roasted pork belly and it was delicious. Looking forward to going back next time Im in Charlottesville to try something new!
Good food but the seating is a little strange. Would be better with no swivel chairs and regular chairs instead
A wonderful little shop with superior food. Everything made by hand and, I believe, on site. Small nonpresumptious inside and out. An atmosphere and experience I havent had the opportunity to share in a very long time.
Food is good, staff is warm. Nice place to get a quick bite or just chill and do some work on your laptop while sipping coffee
One of the best places, let alone a restaurant, that we have ever taken a chance on. So far everything we have tried there is hands down DELICIOUS! I dont like blueberry pie that much and never have, but I had a taste of Quality Pies blueberry pie and it is so amazing I will buy 2 slices just for my self next time I come in. I mean the savory pies, quiches, and sandwiches are just as off the hook amazing as the sweet Pies. I am so glad we stopped here as it is now my goto food stop. Yall should rename it Super High Quality Amazing Pies 😀
The highly engaging staff treated us to gourmet goodies that you would only normally find in a high class restaurant- all in a storefront reminiscent of a traditional dairy queen. Be sure to ask about the goats. Tell them you herd about them online.
Tomas is definitely taking this place to the next level.. from deserts to breakfast to lunch to dinner.. youll definitely leave here satisfied!!
Had a great sandwich in this little gem the other day. Highly recommend them! Cozy, quirky interior and innovative menu.
Staff was absolutely wonderful and the food was amazing and well priced! We’re from out of town but I will be returning whenever I can. I highly recommend
I am a big fan! I usually do simple things (e.g. egg biscuit, apple pie, Americano), but they do them well. The avocado toast is elaborate and beautiful, and their menu has a lot of vegetarians (not awesome for vegans, but there are some options). Good for breakfast, lunch, and even a nice place to study. Parking is decent, but even if the lot is full, street parking is not too far. Highly recommend.
The taste is allright and the composition is less than artful. Had a tart. They havent mastered the espresso machine. Call and check if they are open before you go, they dont stay open till 8 and they werent open on Sunday last time I went.
This is a new Cafe in the old Spudnut cafe location. It is popular almost all the day, it doesnt open until 8 a.m. . Rather unusual for a breakfast venue. Many customers use the takeout feature and the place is busy in the morning.Ive only been here once and can give a better report in the future.
11$ for a sandwich that consists of 1 piece of bread, a piece of hard bread that could barley be bitten through. This place is over priced for the food you receive. The only thing I liked were the people whom worked there. Don’t come here if your looking to grab a bite to eat before you go into your 10 hour long shift this is not the place for you.
Very cool place. Tasty pies. Great 50s and 60s ambiance. Very helpful folks.
Excellent food! Counter seats not real comfortable, but the great coffee made up for it. Attentive customer service.
It was the worst pie I have ever had in my life. I was definitely not impressed. We ordered cherry and it was sour, the apple was okay but not the greatest and The blueberry would have been better with a crust instead of an oat crumble. It took way to long for us to get a cold piece of pie (about 15 minutes) and then when asked for the pie to be heated up it took almost 20 minutes and it came back and wasn’t even warm. The people working there did not seem happy to be there and when we showed up there was sticky counters with plates all over them. Definitely looked nasty and the food was gross to.
Best blueberry pie in Cville, best breakfast with such quality ingredients, fresh eggs and tomatoes that you really taste the difference. Such a lovely atmosphere and great staff, GO GO GO and get yourself an apple fritter
Quality ingedience, family friendly, the food is absolutely delicious, with simple ingredients but with soulful well prepared creativity. Staff is friendly and attentive. I LOVE this place.
Missed the mark.It was our first visit today after having it in mind to try for a while. When you walk in the menu was half way down the bar. Unable to read really well from where you order. Because of the size, we couldnt step past the group of people sitting down eating to see it better. It didnt help the menu was written badly, really unorganized. Its fine that its a small place and its busy, but put the menu where people order and make it make it more readable. So we asked what sandwiches they had, and the lady taking our order said she didnt know. I asked her, is that Chorizo Iberico I see? She said she wasnt sure and they like to write items in Spanish so she couldnt tell. Its fine its written in Spanish, but you guys have to know what youre selling so you can tell us at least. She explained she had pork shoulder with potatoes and a pesto sauce, it sounded great so we ordered it. I saw Tortilla Espanola (Spanish omelette) so said Ill take that too!We honestly werent 100% sure if we were getting a sandwich. But the ingredients sounded on point. The Tortilla came out. It was drizzled with olive oil and black paper. It had no onions from what I could tell, just potato and egg made up the tortilla. Most of the flavor of a classic Spanish omelette comes from caramelized onions. So unfortunately it had very little flavor, other than the pepper and olive oil. The potatoes were cut and placed in the omelette dauphinois style. Thin and horizontally layered. This meant the omelette had an odd texture when you cut in to it and ate it. Unfortunately I think it was also microwaved, because it was scorching hot on the inside and tepid warm on the outside. No one makes a Spanish omelette like my mother, I admit it, and I wouldnt begrudge any place that didnt make it as well as she does. But this really wasnt a Spanish omelette like Id ever tasted. Bland, odd textured and unevenly hot meaning all I could really taste was the black pepper and olive oil on top.The pork shoulder (Iberico) came out and it wasnt a sandwich. But it looked appetizing. Hunks of potato and pork shoulder, tossed in oil, smothered in a pesto type of sauce with a fried egg and sour cream on top. It was delicious. The egg was cooked perfectly, the meat was insanely good. Everything just worked well together.But.... everything else we ran in to let the place down. I heard the chef came from MAS just down the road so I had higher hopes. But for us, the basics were wrong. You cant mess up a Spanish omelette. I mean you can, but you shouldnt. Its a staple, you need to get it right. It doesnt have to be the best, but it needs to be tasty and there was just nothing pleasant to their version. Also, the setup before the food was just confusing, hard work and unwelcoming.Ill give it another try. But today, it missed the mark for us.
Great, eclectic lunch menu. Reasonably priced. Staff is extremely nice. (Jillian rocks!)
My favorite place for breakfast since i eat here most days. I have a latte with the tarta de Santiago with whipped cream. Yum super delicious!!! They have an awesome lunch menu too which changes every day! Never been here after lunch but Ive heard its good and they now have alcoholic beverages. I highly recommend this new interesting venue
The Cubano was excellent, seating was a bit tight but manageable. Delicious sweets in the deli counter. Staff is friendly with a colorful inviting environment.
Delicious sandwhiches, home made bread, Spanish tortas,. Friendly service, cool neighborhood spot.
Great foood & drinks! Awesome rotating menu
Im blown away by how much I love this place! I stopped by on a whim, headed home from preschool drop off one morning, and fell in love. The absolute best coffee and breakfast in town, I am sure of it. Ive spent the majority of mornings, since, visiting and tasting different things on the menu. My absolute favorite menu item is the smoked salmon with egg and herbed cream cheese on toast. Its absolutely incredible. Also, try the chess pie while youre there too--youll leave feeling like youve found your favorite hometown place. I did!
Custardy quiche, delicious BLT, reasonable prices in a friendly and clean environment.
Amazing food! Pastries and coffee is worth stopping to check out.
Love itPulled pork and perfectly fried egg on a biscuit w- hot coffeePerfect break from the snow.
They offer the best brunch in the area and the cinnamon rolls are AMAZING!
Super fun place for Sat or Sun morning.
Nice atmosphere; great baked goods. Friendly staff.
Amazing Spanish food in a welcoming atmosphere.
Key Lime Pie and Mimosas! Nothing better on a 91 degree day!
Yummy and lots of gfree and vegetarian choices for a variety of eaters in your party!
We just visited this location for the first time since Spudnuts closed. The space is colorfully updated and the staff is kind and well intentioned but the food really needs some help. $10 for a tiny, rather blend and overly buttered grilled cheese sandwich served along with exactly 4 pieces of chips left us thinking. Although the gazpacho had a nice chill and texture, it was quite salty. The pie had a nice crumbly crust but was unnaturally warm. The best dish was the anchovies. As someone else noted in an earlier review, it would be nice to add some bread or crouton type of carbohydrate to go along with the fish Plus, they might want to consider organizing the back of the house, which looked quite messy, especially given that they have an open kitchen. Hoping that we can visit again to try other dishes once they get settled more.
Key lime pie is great but the coffee needs to improves
Been very impressed so far. In a town that is surrounded by farmers of all types, it is exceedingly difficult to find a lunch spot that actually does source high quality ingredients. Outside of Lampo, I was left searching until now! Pricepoint matches quality of ingredients, and portion sizes are what a non-American would consider normal. The homemade biscuit is unquestionably the best in town - mushroom, pork, and octopus dishes are on point.... And that tahini brownie - wow.
Loved the place. And the Pies!
Friendly service, small, but tasty menu.
Its okay. Friendly atmosphere
Excellent coffee and cinnamon roll!
This place rescued the breakfast scene in CVille. Before this place and Brazos were around, where in the world did ppl used to eat?
Love it! Great food and sweet atmosphere.
All I have to say is New favorite.
Great food and service.
Great food and friendly peoples!
Underwhelming food and over-priced. That said, staff was very friendly and unique (if unfitting) decor.Empanadas - beef-forward, good.Pork Rilette - 2 oz of run of the mill pork for $10. Not acceptable.Tortilla Española - traditional version, bland, needs salt and more olive oil crispy-deliciousness.Anchovies - am I supposed to eat these plain? Should be served w grilled baguette.Artichoke Chèvre - decent, but more like artichoke flavored chèvre. Better w olive oil drizzle.
Bright shiny place makes you feel happy just to go inside the great color for staff and incredible food this place is an original in every way
Sweet little spot!
Tarta De Santiago. Just try it. 👍
Love the purple octopus sandwich!
Fun, fresh, clever food options
This is my favorite place in town!
Terrible quality pie and apple fritters without apples. Over priced and poor quality food. Wont be open long.
Great quiche!!
Best pie ever! Amazing!!
Very friendly workers, the Pecan pie was worth 0 stars.
Friendly people. Owner was there.
Good stuff.
The food is BOMB
Not just pizza or pies.
Great quiche!
Fun lunch
