It was really nice to get commissary and Exchange privileges back as a disabled veteran. The only reason I couldnt give 5 stars is that they sell out of items and dont restock quickly. Its great to get things not available in civilian grocery stores.

GREAT PLACE. WE LOVE OUR COMMISSARY!

Review №3

If you want to experience the absolutely worst, most frustrating experience in the history of self checkout go to this commissary. Fruits and veggies arent always in the system, are mis-priced, and the bar codes on the apples arent even part of the commissary system. The UPC readers are finicky and the super sensitive weight monitor on the bag holding area will demand that you remove an item, then place it back, then remove, replace, then do the hokey pokey...Arrggghh! The poor self checkout assistant was obligated to help each patron numerous times. Only 2 of the kiosks were operational and the line grew long, even on an otherwise uncrowded morning. This is what happens when you award the checkout system contract to the lowest bidder.Bottom line, while a few items are cheaper than Walmart and the produce is better, it is not worth the hassle at the commissary self checkout. You can always go through the regular line and pay a bagger whatever savings you might have realized. Therefore a wash. Better yet, go to Publix. Friendlier than all the others, superior quality items, and regular and self checkout are accurate and efficient!

Place is usually great. But lately some people that work there are incredibly rude. My father is retired and in his 70s, so I try to spend as much time with him as Im able to, even if it means just going to the grocery store. What Ive seen lately is that its always a member of management or someone in a lead position with a problem. They will literally give people that work there, as well as shop there, the dirtiest looks Ive ever seen. Itll be in the front of the store where everyone can see too. It gives a terrible impression when you see baggers or customers walk by just to have someone who is supposed to be in a leadership position eyeball them with nothing but disgust as they walk away. Then today my father and I are walking up to the store and having a conversation outside, (Ill reiterate, before even walking into the store,) about which side of his facemask should be on top, when were interrupted by one of the managers who points in my face saying facemasks are required!! Only part of our conversation he heard was me saying I dont think it matters which side is on top... Both of us visibly had masks in our hands about to put them on. Is this how we treat people now? I could understand if we were inside the store putting anyone at risk (forget the fact we both got vaccinated bc he wouldnt have known but I digress), but we werent inside...We were outside between the exit and entrance. It wouldnt be so bad if this was a one time thing, except you see this kind of behavior happen to others more and more frequently.

If you are going to restrict hours for service members, at least have the courtesy to post these changes on your website and social media so we don’t waste our time driving down here only to be turned away.

Some stocking issues, but very short wait time at checkout. Wide aisles and not too busy. I was surprised that milk is.cheaper off post Overall a bit cheaper prices than off post, so be careful and shop the sales at other stores. The best part is getting to chat with other veterans!!

Not worth the trip if you want to deal with poor customer service and attitude. The latest trip involved the following. My mom was in the self check out line and a nice customer in front of her said to go ahead since she only had one item. She politely asked if the lady was sure and said thank you. When she got to the checkout the attendant walked up to her, interrupted her checking out and accused her of skipping the line by asking if she saw what she thought she saw. And asked repeatedly if she skipped the line. Ridiculous. We both will only be going to local grocery stores as this is just one of many examples of the poor attitudes we have had to deal with.

I dont know why we need to grade this place. Its a grocery store. The produce could be fresher. I brought Jimmy dean bowls because they are less expensive. The cashiers are nice and fast. The baggers would for tip so I think they deserve a reward. I have been to better commissaries but this one is okay.

This is just crazy! Refrigerator is broken so the answer is to put a floor fan flowing towards dairy products! Heard food inspector say it was ok since there is no cross contamination! What about the case being over 60 degrees! Forget safety....I will not be buying anything from here if this is the standard! When all else fails get a dirty floor fan and point it at broken unit!I tried the bakery again today October 20,2021. Now I will go back to my original stance and stay away from the bakery. I asked my son to get frozen brotchens from the deli. I got brotchens they didnt sell that they froze and sold my son. There are no markings when these were pulled off the shelf and frozen. I asked for frozen never before cooked brotchens. Where is the food inspectors in this commissary. The service and quality has gone down hill. But prices have gone up. Deli has lost my business for good!

Cashiers are always pleasant and helpful. Since increasing the number of DECA items, many branded items that I preferred are no longer available. Would also like more lower sodium or no salt added items of any kind.

The commissary may help your budget in high COL areas like Hawaii, but here it will hurt your wallet even if youre used to shopping at Target or Publix. I only go for the sushi and a few international things that other stores dont carry. The cashiers are consistently professional and I never see workers in the aisles themselves but somehow they keep the place spotless.

I was only there with a friend so I didnt actually buy anything but it looks nice. Im going to actually stop in and shop there because I feel like its comparable to Walmart. Plus its for Redstone arsenal so we might as well take advantage of it and use it. I would recommend you giving it a shot and checking it out

For an authorized military or retired military person the commissary is perhaps the best place to shop for food items. Consider that one notable benefit is not having to pay the 9 percent tax ( in Alabama). It is clean, and well stocked. For a customary but optional tip there are baggers to bag, carry your food to your car, and load it in. Great service.

Review №24

This place should be shut down. From week to week, you never know whet theyre not going to have. If you like a specific item it may be there a few weeks, then its just gone. Just shut it down. The savings arent worth driving there (past several other stores) only to not find what you wanted and have to go back to the other stores. 7/27/21: I was going back through reviews and I really wanted to upgrade this. Unfortunately, I cant. This place is getting worse by the week. Its is not uncommon to go in and have the meat shelves almost empty, the salad area sealed off, and generally 10%-15% of the shelves empty. The entire world went through COVID yet the Redstone Commissary seems like they just cant recover. This is supposed to be a benefit, but its really turning into a waste of gas and time.

The selection was good, but people need to be more self aware and courteous. They shop like theyre the only ones in the store, carts in the middle of the isle when others are trying to get through, not paying attention, blocking the broccoli, WTH. Maybe some signs and enforcers would help!

If you’re a service member, retiree, or dependent, there’s really no better place to shop for groceries than the commissary. Even with the commissary surcharge, you can’t really beat the prices. If you look hard enough you can find some stellar deals and meat is always at a great price. My only criticism of the Redstone Arsenal Commissary is that it’s way outdated. I fully understand that updating commissaries takes DOD funding an approval but Redstone’s is way overdue for an update. Though there are far less active duty shoppers than say Ft. Campbell or Ft. Riley, there is a large contingent of retirees that could use a larger and newer Commissary.

As far as commissaries go, this one is pretty average. It is nicer than most Army commissaries, but still not quite as nice as most USAF facilities. Its a little older, but its clean, well lit, and well maintained. They have a decent selection in stock, but its a little difficult to find exactly what youre looking for sometimes. Redstone does not have a lot of active duty, and the clientele is typically older retired folks. As such, its not typically crowded, except on Sundays. You dont see the big rush on the 1st and 15th like you would with larger bases. For a retirement community, this is a very nice option to have.

I really dont like shopping at the Commissary. They charge you taxes but call it surcharge. If youre in uniform you still have to show ID and scan it before making a purchase. Thats just crazy to me. Why do you have to tip when your groceries are being taken out. Why not implement something where the baggers get the surcharge that youre charging. I hate going here and try not to every chance I get. The prices are good for some things but for others they are pretty close to Walmart prices.
