This place is a gem! Its has such a wonderful atmosphere that is perfect for kids and adults. Everything Ive tried so far is very tasty, and the coffee is wonderful. The staff here are always so friendly and welcoming. They also play really great jazz music that makes the whole place feel so cozy. Its definitely worth your time!
This place is amazing! Coffee shop and book store in a large beautiful space with great staff. Prices are fine. They brew intelligentsia coffee and sell some delicious pastries from a local bakery. The ambiance is excellent for reading or working on the computer, however, its kid friendly so it may get crowded at times. There are some tables outside. Definitely my favorite coffee shop in town.
Nitro cold brew was very good, highly recommend. The quiche was ok, although a little heavy on the crust
Lovely little cafe and bookshop. Delightful seating arrangements. Solid coffee menu with some extra surprises in the baked goods department. Good mix of books, too, with a major section of YA and childrens books for newer readers. Cozy and sweet!
Found out my Favorite Coralville Bakers cookies are here and one of the best Lattes I have had in some time. Glad I was guided there!!!
One of the best coffee shops I’ve been to!
Context: we visited Sidekick once, in June 2021.I really liked the ambiance. Thats about it.The cappuccino was terrible. It was so bad I dont even know how to describe it. Was it even espresso that was in my drink? The pastry was not good as well. Most of the seating doesnt have an electrical outlet nearby. Not a criticism, just a FYI for those who need to plug in devices while at a coffee shop.
Really excellent coffee, beautiful baked goods, and a well-selected book offering.
Great little spot with a ton of books, delicious coffee, and a large assortment of treats
Great place for a quick stop, and good coffee drinks! Impressed with the prices, a bit better than your normal coffee shops.
When I called to place an order Grace was super polite and friendly and gave great suggestions. I ended up coming home with a delicious chai latte. I will be returning!
We were visiting from out of town and found this place. Just wished we lived closer.
Such a cute coffee shop and book store!
Such an awesome place! Great for the kiddos!!!
Love this place. recently discovered their amazing warm pastries and espresso. They’re extremely covid conscious with contactless pickup and online ordering.I do have one complaint, the warm to-go cups leak. The lid just never seems to be on tightly and coffee drips from the bottom all the way down the cupedit: they fixed the lids!
Nice, quiet, calm ambiance, very helpful staff, gluten free and vegan options. The vegan gluten free cookie was slightly lacking in flavor but not bad overall, and their drinks are on-point, and they have sugar free syrup options.. The oat milk provides more sweetness and nicer flavor than any other dairy free options Ive tried in the past. Id highly recommend the iced chai. Great customer service, and pleasant/helpful staff. They also have book clubs for children with dyslexia and other reading events for children. Great, family friendly coffee shop.
Stopped in on the way back to Chicago to grab a mocha and it did not disappoint! Mocha and coffee were amazing! Every pastry we bought was better then the last!! Owner and staff are SO friendly! Love the decor and ambiance. 5 stars! Wish we lived here- I would be a regular!
Love the coffee, loose leaf and incredible pastries. They are handling the coronavirus with great ease and protecting all customers. When no virus, there is no WiFi which makes it perfect for no distraction conversation, playing with children at one of their reading times or in the play corner, or reading and purchasing one of their great books for sale.
Sidekick is so inviting and charming! It has a great book selection for children, young adults and adults. It is the perfect place to to cozy up with a cup of Intelligentsia (from Chicago) coffee and a book, catch up with friends or to take the kids for some exploring and reading. They also serve local ice cream and pastries. Its our familys go-to coffee shop!
Love this little place. Great coffee and nice selection of books. We are from Rochester, MN, and I am a participant in a clinical research study at UIHCC and we enjoy stopping by on our way out of town as a means of relaxing post strenuous day of injections and tests for the study. Sad we wont be able to stop in next week but hopefully it will be open on our next trip down to I.C. in January. Great to have independent book stores like Sidekick and Prarie Lights to choose from vs always shopping at B & N, which we like when there are no independent bookstores. Best wishes as you endure this pivotal time in retail. Ken and Marylynn
This is a great coffee shop if you have kids and want to take them. They have great coffee but no wifi so it isnt a place to post up and get work done. Theres lots of metal accents and design features so it can get kind of loud, especially with kids.
Sidekicks has something for everyone, coffee, pastries, Ice cream. A fantastic collection of children/youth books...great for baby gifts, birthdays, teacher gifts! It is a truly magical experience!
What.a wonderful find! I was on my morning walk and decided on a new route and There It Was: a great space for a morning break, books, coffee, pastries, peaceful surroundings, even a nice nook to bring the granddaughters for childrens books.
This coffee shop and book store was needed in this area! The space is so warm, welcoming and made me want to see each book that was available on the shelves! I know where Ill be spending my time this winter!
I really like the idea of this place--being able to read a variety of book selections is a cool idea. Its not really a feasible place to study or get stuff done, however. As of this review, there isnt public Wi-Fi available which seems a bit odd for a coffee shop. There also seems to be a lack of outlets in the surrounding area which also makes it kind of inconvenient to work with laptops or other devices. Otherwise, there seems to be a wide variety of books to read (mostly kids and young adult novels), spacious places to sit, and a variety of options on the menu. This place isnt a bad place to go, but for some people it may not be the best place for studying but rather a place to relax and enjoy a snack and a book.
Very new and cute shop. The coffee and pastries were delicious. Definitely a must try.
Cute little coffee shop. Great staff---very helpful. Nice relaxed vibe.
The coffee was really good, I love Intelligentsia and its great to find it in a local coffee shop. The shop is very cute and clean, though unexpectedly seemed to be strongly aimed at children in the books offered. The main draw back is the lack of WiFi. I dont usually like to say I expect a courtesy/free thing from a business, but at this point free WiFi is pretty inherent to coffee shops. My friends and I came in to study and work on stuff, but ended up leaving after trying the coffee because we couldnt use our laptops. I would recommend them for coffee, but be aware of the lack of WiFi if youre planning on doing work here. I will probably only rarely return here as it just isnt as convenient as many other wonderful coffee shops in the area, which have good coffee, atmosphere, AND WiFi.
As someone who grew up in the University Heights area, I’m always interested to see what changes when I return home for the holidays. I was particularly interested in sidekick, because there was now a coffee shop within walking distance of my childhood home. Today I had planned to come in, have a coffee, and get some work done. Unfortunately after ordering my beverage, I was informed that they do not offer free WiFi for customers. Without WiFi, I am unable to do my work. It was disappointing to see that this place did not offer WiFi for its customers, something that is even standard for a Taco Bell.
Very nice baristas. Yummy food behind the counter! Kids loved the plethora of books. Great to hear the mens acapella group this morning!
I have been to this spot twice now, with the first time getting coffee cake and a cold brew, then the second time getting a monster cookie and a pour over dark roast coffee. My first time being there, they mentioned that the coffee cake was fresh and still warm, which it was when I got a slice of it. The slice was HUGE, but delicious. The cold brew I got was out of the tap they have behind the counter (both cold brew and nitro brew is offered), and it needed no creamer or sugar, as it was a very smooth brew. The second time being there just this morning, I got the monster cookie and the pour over dark roast. The pour over was made to perfection, offering the boldness yet smooth taste that I could drink just black. They offered to warm up my cookie, to which I replied yes, please and warm it was. Overall with both experiences I have had a nice time there. One thing I wish and seeing on reviews is that there is no WiFi, and it is a definite cell phone dead zone. I dont mind that there isnt WiFi or service, but at least have a sign up on the intention of not offering WiFi so customers arent taken by surprise. Other than that, it is a solid spot for good coffee and baked goods.
Spacious coffee shop with great coffee options and delicious snacks! Im from out of town and came here with a friend whos local. The coffee shop is really spacious which is great if you come with your family or a group. There are couches you can read and hang out.Theres no wifi and thats intentional. I actually like this! Its nice to be in a coffee shop and see people having a conversation and not all trying to avoid interacting with another human. I used to live in NYC and it was quite common for coffee shops to not have wifi. Honestly, if you want to have wifi, then get a data plan that allows tethering, or go to another coffee shop!I had the chocolate biscotti and a latte, both delicious! Although I was tempted by the quiche which looked equally delicious. They are happy to warm up items as well, which adds to the charm of the place! The walls are lined with books available for purchase, but also great for browsing if you have kids. Also, there are cute cubbies towards the front which kids can curl up in and read. Highly recommend this local gem!
